Ancient Web: Millitext Squeezed Letters Into LCD Subpixels

Millitext asks a wonderfully unnecessary question: how small can readable text on a computer monitor get before it becomes basically a secret message?

Matt Sarnoff published the project in 2008. The trick is not a tiny font in the normal sense. It abuses the physical construction of an LCD panel.

A conventional pixel is made from red, green, and blue subpixels. Normally those three elements work together to produce one perceived color. Millitext instead treats the subpixels as individual columns, effectively tripling the horizontal drawing resolution available for extremely small letterforms.

The result is text only a couple of millimeters tall.

On the right kind of LCD, you can sometimes read it by getting uncomfortably close to the screen. Otherwise Sarnoff recommends a magnifying glass or a digital camera in macro mode.

Typography at the hardware boundary

The fun part is that Millitext depends on assumptions modern software usually tries to hide from you.

It cares about the exact ordering of physical red, green, and blue elements in the panel. It will not work correctly on a CRT because a CRT does not have the same regular LCD subpixel grid. It can also display incorrectly on LCDs whose subpixel order differs from the arrangement the image expects.

In other words, this tiny text is not just an image.

It is an image designed for the physical geometry of one class of display hardware.

That makes the project a neat little fossil from an era when LCD subpixel rendering was becoming familiar to ordinary computer users through technologies like ClearType, but screens were still crude enough that people could think about their pixel structure directly.

Sarnoff is careful not to claim he invented subpixel rendering. His page says the idea had existed for years and that the project came from experimenting with whether subpixels could be used directly to encode tiny text.

That restraint makes the experiment better.

It is not pretending to be a revolution. It is somebody noticing a technical property of the hardware and pushing it until the screen starts doing something ridiculous.

The generator lets visitors enter text, choose a font, adjust brightness, invert colors, and create their own microscopic messages. The page is still understandable because it explains the phenomenon immediately instead of burying it under an interactive demo with no context.

Ancient Web: Club Nintendo Archives Rescued the UK Magazine Everyone Forgot

Club Nintendo Archives exists because one Nintendo collector discovered an entire magazine series he had somehow never heard of.

The site documents the UK Club Nintendo promotional magazine that ran during the first half of the 1990s. Its creator explains that he only discovered the publication after using eBay in the early 2000s, then found that information about the British edition was surprisingly thin compared with better-known magazines like Nintendo Magazine System, Super Play, and Nintendo Power.

So he started building the reference he wanted to find.

The website went online on Neocities in 2017. By 2020 its magazine database was complete, and the site had grown far beyond a personal checklist into a detailed index of a largely forgotten corner of Nintendo’s publishing history.

Promotional material becomes historical material

The interesting thing about Club Nintendo is that it was not primarily an independent games magazine.

It was promotional material.

That probably helped it disappear from memory. A commercial magazine is collected because people think of it as a publication. A promotional magazine is easier to treat as temporary, even when it contains reviews, previews, tips, competitions, art, product information, and contemporary assumptions about what Nintendo thought British players cared about.

Club Nintendo Archives preserves that context.

The site tracks which games appeared in which issues, keeps the magazine’s UK-localized naming conventions, and explains regional oddities such as Contra becoming Probotector and Star Fox becoming Starwing in Britain.

That kind of detail is collector gold because it records not just the games but how they were presented in one market at one moment.

The site timeline also shows what can happen when a narrow preservation project finds an audience. It passed one million views in 2020 and ten million by the end of 2022. In 2025 the webmaster began adding downloadable versions of issues from his own collection.

This is a newer site than many Ancient Web subjects, but it is doing classic old-Web work: one person, one obsession, hand-built pages, detailed indexing, and information too specific for a general encyclopedia to care about properly.

Ancient Web: AA5TB Has Been Publishing Ham Radio Notes Since 1998

AA5TB is what happens when a ham-radio notebook gets a domain name and then survives for nearly three decades.

The site belongs to Steve Yates of Fort Worth, Texas. He notes that the pages were first established in July 1998 and that he was first licensed as an amateur-radio operator in 1979.

That difference matters.

The website was not the beginning of the hobby. It was the point when decades of accumulated radio work started becoming searchable by everybody else.

The site covers antennas, small transmitting loops, end-fed half-wave antennas, dipoles, T-monopoles, QRP couplers, higher-power couplers, homemade baluns, coax for field use, and other practical topics that radio people can argue about indefinitely and then go outside to test anyway.

Personal technical pages age differently

A lot of technical websites become obsolete because they explain one software version, one product, or one API.

A page about the behavior of a piece of wire at radio frequency can last much longer.

AA5TB has that quality. Its subject matter is old physics being applied by actual people in garages, workshops, fields, portable stations, and back yards. Component choices change. Suppliers disappear. Radios improve. The wavelength is still the wavelength.

The site’s plain presentation also makes the underlying work easy to see. It is not trying to sell a lifestyle around amateur radio. It is mostly an accumulation of diagrams, formulas, measurements, designs, and explanations.

That was one of the strongest forms of the personal Web.

A person developed expertise, wrote down what worked, and linked the pages together. Search engines eventually made that private notebook discoverable to somebody on the other side of the world trying to solve the same problem.

Yates even quotes the FCC definition of amateur service on the homepage: radio communication for self-training, intercommunication, and technical investigations by authorized amateurs with a personal rather than commercial aim.

The website follows the same spirit.

It is a technical archive created because the material was worth sharing, not because every page needed a conversion funnel.

Ancient Web: Rulers.org Has Been Tracking Who Runs What Since 1996

Rulers.org looks like somebody decided the Web needed a permanent answer to the question, “Who was running that country in March 1974?” and then refused to stop updating the answer.

The site is a giant chronology of heads of state, heads of government, de facto leaders, foreign ministers, regional subdivisions, and international organizations. In many countries the lists go back to around 1700. Birth and death years appear where known, uncertain dates get special notation, and the site is careful about the difference between an exact term and a period during which somebody is merely known to have held office.

That already makes it useful.

Then you notice the monthly chronicle.

Rulers.org has event pages beginning in 1996 and continuing year by year, month by month, into 2026. Instead of a frozen historical reference, it became a running political log maintained in the same plain-Web style for decades.

Dense information, almost no decoration

The design philosophy is the opposite of modern publishing.

There are no giant hero images, no cards, no infinite scroll, and very little effort spent making the material look dramatic. The page exists to get names and dates onto the screen.

That makes it feel closer to a reference book with hyperlinks than a modern website.

The site’s notation also reveals how serious the underlying bookkeeping is. If the exact beginning or end of a ruler’s term is uncertain, an asterisk marks the known range instead of pretending the historical record is cleaner than it is. Female rulers are marked, birth and death years are noted, and the site warns that biographical dates can conflict between sources.

This is not glamorous work.

It is the kind of work that becomes more valuable precisely because nobody notices it while it is being done.

A political chronology assembled continuously over thirty years can preserve transitions, temporary governments, disputed offices, small territories, and short-lived appointments that are easy to flatten out in later summaries.

The monthly event pages are especially interesting because they preserve history before anyone knows which parts of it will matter later.

That is one of the recurring themes in the Ancient Web project. A specialist site does not need to predict the future. It only needs to keep good notes.

Ancient Web: Windows Refund Day Tried to Return the OS Nobody Asked For

On February 15, 1999, people showed up at Microsoft offices trying to return Windows.

The basic complaint was simple: many PC buyers wanted the hardware but not the operating system bundled with it. Microsoft’s license agreement said users could reject the agreement and seek a refund, while manufacturers routinely made the practical act of getting that refund difficult or impossible.

So open-source users turned the problem into an event.

Marc Merlin’s surviving Windows Refund Day page preserves the story from inside that moment. It describes February 15 as a worldwide day when users of Linux and other operating systems went to Microsoft offices to return licenses they said they had been forced to acquire with their computers.

The page still carries photos, contemporary explanation, and video material from television coverage.

The battle was partly about a sticker

The late-1990s PC market made operating-system bundling feel almost invisible.

Buy a mass-market machine and Windows was simply there. The price of the license disappeared into the price of the computer. For people installing Linux, BSD, or another operating system immediately, that meant paying for software they did not intend to use.

Refund Day tried to make the hidden transaction visible.

The organizers’ argument leaned heavily on the Windows End User License Agreement itself. If a buyer did not accept the license, the agreement appeared to contemplate returning the software. The problem was that the software was generally not a shrink-wrapped box sitting next to the machine. It was an OEM installation entangled with the hardware sale, manufacturer contracts, and a distribution system where nobody at the retail counter wanted to explain who owed whom twenty, fifty, or a hundred dollars.

The campaign therefore became both a consumer-rights protest and a snapshot of the Linux community at the end of the 1990s.

This was before Linux laptops were a normal product category, before major manufacturers routinely advertised machines without Windows, and before open-source software had become an ordinary part of corporate infrastructure.

The Refund Day page now reads like a small primary-source packet from that transition. It preserves the rhetoric, the frustration, the logistics, and the television-news footage instead of reducing the episode to one sentence in a history of Linux.

Ancient Web: The Living Image Camera Museum Keeps Old Cameras Working

The Living Image Camera Museum has a rule that immediately makes it better than a room full of dead glass boxes: the cameras should work.

The collection focuses on the ordinary cameras people actually used across the twentieth century. Not just Leica, Contax, and other expensive names that already have collectors fighting over them, but box cameras, folding cameras, modest 35mm machines, roll-film cameras, and battered survivors that somebody thought were worth rescuing.

The museum’s origin story is personal. Its creator describes receiving a 1954 Dacora from his mother, then a much older Butcher’s Cameo from his grandmother. The Cameo dated to around 1910 and had been second-hand even when she received it as a child. Rather than treating it as an untouchable relic, he got it taking photographs again.

That became the philosophy of the site.

A museum where the exhibits still have film in them

The site now documents roughly 180 vintage cameras, many with rotating views, repair notes, historical context, practical observations, and photographs made with the cameras themselves.

The organization is wonderfully old-Web and genuinely useful. You can browse by decade, by camera type, or through an index. The era rooms make the evolution of camera design visible: wood and brass give way to black paint and chrome; folding cameras shrink; 35mm takes over; plastics and automatic exposure arrive; Japanese manufacturing becomes dominant.

The workshop sections are even better because they show preservation as a process rather than an outcome.

Cameras are opened, cleaned, repaired, rebuilt, loaded, tested, and occasionally found to be more stubborn than expected. The site’s 2026 update log is still talking about test films, shutter mechanisms, dirty brakes, donated cameras, and machines returning to service after decades.

That continuity matters. The Living Image Camera Museum is not just an old website about old cameras. It is an old-style personal website that is still being actively used for the exact reason personal sites were valuable in the first place: one person knows a ridiculous amount about a subject and keeps writing it down.

The most affecting part of the introduction is not technical at all. The author describes placing one of his grandparents’ old negatives back into the camera that exposed it decades earlier and thinking about the light that had once passed through the lens from them.

That is preservation in one sentence.

Ancient Web: Richard Bartle Saved the Paper Trail Behind MUDs

Richard Bartle did something historians dream about: he kept the paperwork.

Bartle, who created the original MUD with Roy Trubshaw at the University of Essex, built a personal website around an unusually deep collection of material from the beginning of multi-user online worlds. The archive contains papers, magazine articles, Usenet postings, reports, technical explanations, and historical documents stretching back to the era when a multiplayer online world was still a strange research-and-hobby experiment.

One of the most useful pages is his collection of formal texts. Bartle explains that his MUD documents go back to the beginning of the field and that he kept essentially everything he saw written about the subject. The point of putting it online was not nostalgia. It was access.

That decision aged very well.

Before MMOs had a vocabulary

The archive includes material from a period when people were still deciding what these systems were.

Bartle preserves his 1983 Practical Computing article, which he describes as the first published article about MUDs. There are early reports on multiplayer computer games, technical descriptions of parsers, Usenet posts, and the 1996 paper “Players Who Suit MUDs,” which became influential for its attempt to classify player motivations.

His pages also preserve corrections that would be easy to lose in second-hand histories. In one note, Bartle explains that an often-repeated date for the first MUD version was wrong: Roy Trubshaw wrote the first version in autumn 1978, while a later version followed in 1979.

That kind of correction is exactly why first-hand personal archives matter.

The site itself is also an artifact of the period it documents. Many pages carry dates from 1999. The design is basic, the navigation is mostly text, and the material is presented with the assumption that a reader came to actually read documents rather than scroll through a feed.

The result is more useful than a polished retrospective because it contains source material from people who were there.

Modern online games inherited enormous pieces of the MUD idea: persistent worlds, player identities, social spaces, virtual economies, role-playing, communities, moderation problems, and the eternal discovery that strangers connected to a network will immediately invent behavior the designers did not anticipate.

Ancient Web: Mime.info Has Cataloged Silent Performance Since 1996

The funniest thing about mime.info is what it is not. It has nothing to do with e-mail attachments, MIME types, or browser headers. It is The World of Mime Theatre, and it has been standing quietly on the Web since 1996.

That date matters. A specialist site created in 1996 had to solve a problem that search engines, social networks, Wikipedia, YouTube, and modern event platforms would later attack from different directions: how do you make a scattered international art form findable?

Mime.info answered by building directories.

The site accumulated listings for performers, companies, schools, workshops, organizations, publications, films, videos, festivals, and related websites. It also built a library with an encyclopedia of mime, historical writing, biographies, and older texts. Some of the pages still carry copyright lines beginning in 1996, while others show updates stretching well into the 2020s.

That gives the site an unusual texture. It is not simply a dead 1990s homepage preserved in amber. It is an old information architecture that kept receiving new information.

A directory before everything became a platform

The old Web loved hand-built directories because there often was no better way to organize a niche.

If you wanted to find mime schools in another country, a physical-theatre company, a publication, a festival, or information about Marcel Marceau, there was no giant centralized service guaranteed to have it. Somebody had to gather the material and make the links.

Mime.info did exactly that.

The library alone includes an encyclopedia, historical material, books, articles, and resources tracing mime and pantomime across centuries. Other sections preserve contact information and names for companies and organizations that may otherwise have vanished from casual search.

Its creator, Lorin Eric Salm, describes The World of Mime Theatre as first created in 1996. In 2026 the project reached its thirtieth year online, which is a remarkable lifespan for a site built around one specialized performing art.

There is also something very old-Web about the way the project assumes human curation is a feature rather than a defect. Visitors are invited to submit missing schools, companies, books, and other resources. The site grows because somebody notices that a thing exists and tells the webmaster.

No recommendation algorithm is required.

Ancient Web: Silkqin Built a Personal Library Around One Ancient Instrument

Some personal websites grow until they stop looking like homepages and start looking like somebody quietly built a research library in public.

Silkqin is John Thompson’s long-running site devoted to the guqin, the ancient Chinese seven-string zither. The domain dates to the early 2000s, but the material represents decades of performance, translation, historical research, reconstruction, and collecting.

The site is enormous in the old-Web sense of the word.

There are sections on historical handbooks, instruments as physical objects, paintings, poetry, songs, tunings, performance practice, ideology, biographies, recordings, and the process of reconstructing music from old tablature. Navigation is dense because the subject is dense.

One particularly important theme is right in the site’s name: silk strings.

Modern guqin players often use metal-nylon strings, but Thompson has spent years documenting and advocating historically informed performance with traditional silk strings. His pages discuss how the material changes the sound and playing technique, along with the historical shift away from silk during the twentieth century.

The Web as a working notebook

Silkqin is not arranged like a museum exhibit designed to give a visitor five facts and send them onward.

It behaves like a scholar-performer’s working archive.

A page may contain historical quotations, Chinese text, translation notes, tuning details, links to related essays, audio, references to old qin handbooks, and corrections accumulated over time. Other pages provide recordings and reconstructed performances of pieces whose notation survives from centuries ago.

That makes the site particularly suited to the Web as it originally worked: many small documents joined by links, allowed to grow independently, with the reader free to disappear down whichever path becomes interesting.

It is also a reminder that the early independent Web was global in a way that gets lost when Internet history is reduced to American browser companies and dot-com startups.

A personal domain could become a publishing platform for extremely specialized cultural knowledge that would otherwise be scattered across books, manuscripts, recordings, personal correspondence, and classrooms.

Silkqin is still being used and cited by musicians and researchers. That longevity is part of its value. The site is not merely preserved; it remains useful.

Before a few slabs of semiconductor could quietly convert serious electrical power, engineers sometimes did the job with glass vessels full of mercury vapor glowing an alarming shade of blue.

Mike’s Electric Stuff documents mercury arc rectifiers, or MARs, with the enthusiasm of somebody who correctly realizes that obsolete industrial hardware is much more interesting when you can actually see how strange it was.

These devices converted alternating current to direct current at power levels ranging from kilowatts into the megawatt range. Their operation depended on an electrical arc between a mercury pool and metal anodes, with multiple anodes commonly used for multiphase power.

The site explains both the principle and the hardware: glass bulbs, large steel tanks, ignitors, transformers, cooling systems, and the eerie arc itself.

It also preserves the kind of practical detail that rarely survives in a clean textbook diagram.

One retired engineer described how large glass rectifiers were shipped upside down. The mercury had to be carefully moved into the base during installation without allowing its weight to enter and break one of the glass arms. Apparently “quart of mercury escaping from shattered industrial glassware” was a problem best assigned to the experienced crew.

Industrial electronics with visible drama

The photographs are the heart of the page.

There are small rectifier bulbs, museum examples, huge multi-anode units, steel-tank rectifiers, control gear, circuit diagrams, and installations that remained in service long after semiconductor rectifiers had made the technology obsolete.

The page records examples still operating in the early 2000s, including equipment used for lifts, mills, tram power, and battery systems. One restored system had reportedly worked for more than fifty years before retirement.

That longevity makes the transition to solid-state electronics easier to appreciate. Semiconductor rectifiers are smaller, safer, simpler, and dramatically less theatrical.

A silicon diode does not contain a visible pool of mercury with an electric arc leaping through vapor above it.

Progress has costs.

The site also links scanned technical articles and maintenance manuals, turning a collector page into a small practical archive of a technology that most electrical workers will never encounter alive.
