Ancient Web: Windows Refund Day Tried to Return the OS Nobody Asked For

On February 15, 1999, people showed up at Microsoft offices trying to return Windows.

The basic complaint was simple: many PC buyers wanted the hardware but not the operating system bundled with it. Microsoft’s license agreement said users could reject the agreement and seek a refund, while manufacturers routinely made the practical act of getting that refund difficult or impossible.

So open-source users turned the problem into an event.

Marc Merlin’s surviving Windows Refund Day page preserves the story from inside that moment. It describes February 15 as a worldwide day when users of Linux and other operating systems went to Microsoft offices to return licenses they said they had been forced to acquire with their computers.

The page still carries photos, contemporary explanation, and video material from television coverage.

The battle was partly about a sticker

The late-1990s PC market made operating-system bundling feel almost invisible.

Buy a mass-market machine and Windows was simply there. The price of the license disappeared into the price of the computer. For people installing Linux, BSD, or another operating system immediately, that meant paying for software they did not intend to use.

Refund Day tried to make the hidden transaction visible.

The organizers’ argument leaned heavily on the Windows End User License Agreement itself. If a buyer did not accept the license, the agreement appeared to contemplate returning the software. The problem was that the software was generally not a shrink-wrapped box sitting next to the machine. It was an OEM installation entangled with the hardware sale, manufacturer contracts, and a distribution system where nobody at the retail counter wanted to explain who owed whom twenty, fifty, or a hundred dollars.

The campaign therefore became both a consumer-rights protest and a snapshot of the Linux community at the end of the 1990s.

This was before Linux laptops were a normal product category, before major manufacturers routinely advertised machines without Windows, and before open-source software had become an ordinary part of corporate infrastructure.

The Refund Day page now reads like a small primary-source packet from that transition. It preserves the rhetoric, the frustration, the logistics, and the television-news footage instead of reducing the episode to one sentence in a history of Linux.

Ancient Web: SGI’s Developer Forum ’95 Put a Conference on Three CDs

In 1995, Silicon Graphics solved the problem of distributing an entire developer conference by putting the conference on three CDs and making the discs behave like a miniature Web site.

The Developer Forum ’95 CD set was produced for SGI’s developer community after the company’s 1995 conference. The surviving HTML describes a three-volume package containing classroom-style presentations, question-and-answer sessions, hands-on labs, keynote material, opening videos, still photographs, software, slide decks, and technical documents.

The discs even shipped with the browser and viewers needed to use them.

That detail says a lot about the period.

A multimedia conference archive could not assume that the recipient already had the correct browser, codecs, helper applications, or network connection. If SGI wanted developers to experience the package reliably, SGI had to bring the environment with it.

This was the Web before the Web could carry everything

The CD set used HTML navigation, but the heavy material stayed local.

That made sense in 1995. Audio presentations measured in megabytes. Video was expensive to move. A fifty-minute technical talk could be larger than many people’s practical daily Internet appetite. Three physical discs offered huge bandwidth as long as somebody was willing to put them in a drive.

The content itself is a snapshot of SGI at a particularly interesting moment.

Session material covers Open Inventor, graphics programming, OpenGL migration, image processing, color management, developer tools, XFS, high-availability systems, user-interface integration, interactive television, and the company’s software-development environment.

Speaker biographies include people who worked on graphics hardware, OpenGL, operating systems, developer tools, scientific visualization, and the Indigo Magic desktop. Kurt Akeley appears as an SGI vice president and chief engineer with his role in the architecture of OpenGL noted directly in the material.

The set was later preserved by Dan Rich, and modern SGI/IRIX archivists have kept copies of the three discs and their Web files available. That preservation turns what was once conference swag into a surprisingly rich primary source.

It does not merely tell us what SGI sold in 1995.

It shows what SGI believed its developers needed to learn next.

Ancient Web: Ian Bell’s Homepage Kept Elite Close to Its Source Code

Most famous games eventually get museums built around them by fans. Elite had something better for years: one of its original programmers kept putting the evidence on his own homepage.

Ian Bell co-created Elite with David Braben for the BBC Micro, releasing the original game in 1984. The game became famous for combining space flight, combat, trading, and a huge procedurally generated universe inside hardware with almost comically small resources by modern standards.

Bell’s personal site became one of the most useful primary sources for understanding how that happened.

The old ClaraNet pages hosted Elite material, technical explanations, historical notes, downloadable versions, archival documents, and eventually program source. On the game’s fifteenth anniversary in November 1999, Bell released source material from the original program through the site.

That decision mattered far beyond nostalgia.

A programmer’s homepage became part of the historical record

When source code survives, historians and programmers can inspect what the machine actually did rather than reconstructing everything from screenshots and memory.

For Elite, that means looking directly at techniques behind its procedural universe, 3D graphics, data structures, and the extreme economies required by 1980s home computers.

Bell’s site also became a reference point for people writing ports, remakes, technical analyses, and emulator-era recreations. Discussions years later still pointed back to code and documentation hosted there when somebody wanted to know how the original generated planets or represented its universe.

That is a very old-Web kind of authority.

There was no official developer portal with a permanent preservation mandate. One of the creators simply had a homepage and used it to publish the material he thought should remain available.

The ClaraNet host has become unreliable in modern browsing, and some of the site’s material has migrated or been mirrored elsewhere. That instability is itself part of why the page matters. Personal hosting was never designed to become a forty-year archival institution, yet those home directories often ended up carrying irreplaceable technical history.

Elite is no longer obscure. Its influence on space games and open-world design is firmly established. What is easy to lose is the smaller layer beneath the famous story: the original files, programmer notes, old reviews, arguments, demonstrations, and source releases that let later readers inspect the artifact instead of merely admiring it.

Ancient Web: The Data Egg Tried to Replace the Tiny Keyboard With Seven Buttons

The Data Egg began with a problem that still has not gone away: once a computer gets small enough, the keyboard becomes the part that refuses to cooperate.

Gary Friedman developed the original concept at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory around 1990. The goal was a position-independent input device that could be used with one hand while standing, walking, reclining, moving around a workspace, or operating in environments where a desk and keyboard were unavailable.

The first physical prototype was literally built around a plastic Easter egg.

Seven buttons were positioned where the fingers naturally rested: several under the thumb and one for each remaining finger. Characters were entered by pressing combinations of buttons, like playing chords on a piano.

The egg shape did not survive.

The name did.

Chording instead of shrinking QWERTY again

The Data Egg was Friedman’s answer to a design habit that portable computing repeatedly fell into: take a normal keyboard, make it tiny, and then act surprised when human fingers stay the same size.

The site describes earlier inspiration from Microwriter’s one-handed systems and explains how the Data Egg alphabet was designed so button patterns could resemble letter shapes, making the chord combinations easier to learn.

Later prototypes moved away from the literal egg and experimented with smaller shapes, finger-joint activation, belt clips, displays, and designs that could be held without a strap.

The promotional material reads like a time capsule from the personal-digital-assistant era. It imagines one handheld device combining messaging, calendars, notes, address books, translation, alarms, and other personal information functions while allowing the user to capture text anywhere.

In other words, a great deal of what eventually landed in smartphones—minus the seven-button egg keyboard.

The site also preserves the failure state honestly.

Friedman says he pursued the idea for more than fifteen years, but development ended on January 1, 2005. No product reached the mass market. The page was intentionally left online in the hope that someone else might pick up the concept.

That makes it a particularly useful Web artifact.

Most technology histories emphasize products that won. The Data Egg documents a serious alternative input idea through prototypes, diagrams, FAQs, design reasoning, comparisons with competing devices, and the eventual admission that the project stopped.

The first prototype’s ridiculous physical construction makes the archive better, not worse. Somebody had an interaction problem, grabbed an Easter egg, glued buttons to it, and tested the idea with their actual hand.

That is what prototyping is supposed to look like before the industrial designer arrives and removes all evidence of human improvisation.

Ancient Web: Apple2.org Keeps the Apple II in Pictures

Apple2.org contains more than five hundred images of Apple II hardware, which is enough to move past nostalgia and into the much more useful territory of being able to identify the strange card somebody found in a box.

The site is maintained by Tony Diaz, with copyright notices reaching back to 1996. Its focus is the Apple II family and the enormous ecosystem of hardware that accumulated around it: systems, motherboards, interface cards, accelerators, storage devices, modems, peripherals, and products that are obscure enough to require documentation precisely because nobody expects to see them anymore.

The site’s Original Apple ][ Picture Archive is the obvious centerpiece.

It includes standard Apple hardware alongside unusual third-party equipment and items that never became common commercial products. Some entries document variations between revisions. Others exist because a particular expansion card or accessory would otherwise be difficult to identify from a model number and one surviving photograph.

That kind of catalog becomes more useful as the machines get older.

The computer was only the beginning

The Apple II lasted long enough to accumulate a huge peripheral culture.

Owners expanded memory, changed display hardware, added serial and parallel interfaces, connected printers and modems, installed accelerator cards, attached different disk systems, and kept finding new jobs for machines whose architecture was designed in the 1970s.

A clean history of the Apple II can tell you when major models appeared.

A hardware archive can show you the board sitting on your desk.

Apple2.org also preserves technical documentation and older FAQs dealing with Apple II file formats, disk transfer, DOS and ProDOS, archive formats such as ShrinkIt, and the practical problem of moving data between vintage Apple hardware and newer computers.

That is where retrocomputing references earn their keep. Historical appreciation is nice. Getting the file off the disk is nicer.

The site’s own language celebrates the Apple II aggressively and describes it as the first personal computer. That is its framing; computing historians can argue definitions and predecessors forever. The more durable contribution is less debatable: Diaz documented a large amount of Apple II hardware and technical material while much of it was still physically available to photograph and identify.

Those images now function as a reference collection for collectors, repairers, emulator users, archivists, and anybody trying to understand what a surviving piece of hardware actually is.

Ancient Web: DigiCamHistory Stops in 1998 on Purpose

DigiCamHistory.com has a cutoff date, and the cutoff is the point.

The site says it was established on September 5, 2001 and describes itself as a nonprofit educational museum covering the history from film cameras into digital photography and space-imaging hardware.

Most of its core camera coverage stops around 1998.

The author explains why: by then digital photography was taking off fast enough that mainstream review sites had begun documenting new cameras routinely. What was in danger of disappearing was the awkward earlier period — experimental products, obscure brands, still-video cameras, strange storage formats, prototypes, and early digital systems that did not fit neatly into the later consumer-camera story.

So the site concentrates on the years before digital photography became normal.

The prehistory is the interesting part

The museum marks technological firsts, identifies cameras represented in its physical collection, and branches into topics such as storage media, American contributions to digital imaging, early electronic cameras, and space-exploration imagers.

The site also incorporates material from imaging engineer James R. Janesick, whose work connects digital-camera history to spacecraft imaging. A current update notes imagers associated with NASA’s Europa Clipper mission, which launched in October 2024.

That mixture is useful because digital photography did not begin with somebody putting an SD card into a compact camera.

It grew out of television imaging, CCD development, scientific instrumentation, military and space work, electronic still-video experiments, storage problems, computer interfaces, and manufacturers trying to figure out what consumers would tolerate.

The pages look exactly like a specialist site that accumulated over decades because that is what they are. There are long chronological indexes, blue ribbons for firsts, yellow markers for collection pieces, links into individual camera entries, and enough side trails to lose an afternoon without noticing.

This is not a polished museum tour.

It is closer to a workbench with labels on everything.

Ancient Web: Paper CD Case Still Generates Printable Disc Sleeves

PaperCDCase.com solves a problem that used to happen constantly: you have a loose CD, no jewel case, and access to a printer.

The site generates a PDF that can be printed, folded, and turned into a paper sleeve for a compact disc. You can enter an artist, title, and track list, choose Letter or A4 paper, and print the result. An advanced form adds mailing addresses and simple graphics, while the site can also generate jewel-case inserts.

It still works.

That alone makes it interesting, because the technical notes read like a preserved machine room from another era of the Web.

The site’s about page says it was created by Eric Cronin, David Helder, and Tony Kurc in association with MESH, a University of Michigan student group focused on software and hardware projects. Copyright notices begin in 2001.

The original stack included FreeBSD 4, Apache, MySQL, PHP, and a Perl CGI script using PDFLib to create the PDFs. Its CD database came from the FreeDB project. The modern homepage notes that search is now powered by Discogs.

The support page is almost an exhibit by itself

The troubleshooting instructions still discuss Acrobat Reader browser integration, Internet Explorer 6 security settings, ActiveX controls, Adobe Asian Font Packs, and an option to force the generated PDF to download instead of trying to display inside the browser.

There are even postage recommendations for mailing a CD inside the folded paper case.

This is what makes a surviving utility site better than a screenshot of one.

You can see not only what the tool did, but what environment it expected around itself: browser plugins, downloadable PDFs, mix CDs, FreeDB metadata, university hobby groups, and users mailing physical discs to one another.

The press list is equally period-specific. Paper CD Case was mentioned by Yahoo Internet Life in 2001, Playboy’s “Living Online” column in 2002, Computeractive, Internetworld, the Sydney Morning Herald, and other publications.

A tiny utility for folding paper around plastic got real press because it was genuinely useful.

Ancient Web: Computer Stupidities Preserved the Help Desk Horror Story

Computer Stupidities is what happens when thousands of tiny help-desk disasters are given somewhere permanent to live.

RinkWorks still lists Computer Stupidities among its main humor features, and references to the collection are easy to find going back to the late 1990s and early 2000s. Slashdot users were linking individual stories in 1999. Forum posts from the next several years repeatedly describe losing hours inside the archive.

The premise is simple: collect anecdotes about people misunderstanding computers in ways that are frustrating, absurd, or both.

The stories include tech-support calls, hardware confusion, software-installation failures, printers being asked to do things printers were never consulted about, and the recurring discovery that a computer cannot compensate for every misunderstanding surrounding it.

Some entries are firsthand. Some came from friends or submissions. Some are acknowledged as urban legends or stories whose exact origin is impossible to prove.

That uncertainty is part of the archive’s old-Web character rather than something the site tries to hide.

A record of computer literacy being invented in public

The jokes are funny, but the collection also preserves something useful: what ordinary computer confusion looked like when personal computers were spreading faster than the culture around them could standardize.

People had to learn what a modem was, what a drive was, which part of the computer was the computer, why software did not come with the hardware required to run it, and why removing a floppy disk before inserting the next one was not an optional interpretation of the instructions.

A lot of the humor comes from mismatched mental models.

That is more interesting than simply laughing at users.

Modern interfaces hide more machinery, installation is different, removable media is uncommon, and many support problems have migrated from “where is the floppy drive?” to accounts, permissions, subscriptions, browsers, networks, and devices that are technically computers but carefully avoid admitting it.

Computer Stupidities catches an earlier phase while it was happening.

The archive also demonstrates one of the old Web’s strongest habits: somebody encountered the same kind of ridiculous story often enough that they built a permanent category system for it.

Ancient Web: BackRub Still Shows Google Before Google

Before Google was Google, it was BackRub, a Stanford research project with a crawler, a pile of scavenged hardware, and a name that probably would not have survived a marketing meeting.

BackRub grew out of work by Larry Page and Sergey Brin at Stanford in the mid-1990s. The central idea was to use the Web’s link structure as information about importance instead of relying only on the words appearing inside a page.

That sounds ordinary now because the idea helped reshape search.

The old project page is interesting because it shows the system while it was still a research machine rather than a corporation.

Its rough statistics from August 29, 1996 reported about 75.23 million indexable HTML URLs and roughly 207 gigabytes of downloaded content. The page says BackRub was written in Java and Python and ran across Sun Ultra and Intel Pentium machines using Linux. The primary database sat on a Sun Ultra II with 28 GB of disk.

Twenty-eight gigabytes.

There are phones now that would consider that an insult.

Search while the Web was still small enough to describe

The page also credits Scott Hassan and Alan Steremberg for implementation help and Sergey Brin for major involvement. Larry Page signs the note at the bottom.

That kind of detail is why surviving project pages matter.

Modern company histories usually compress the origin story into a clean sequence: two graduate students, a clever ranking method, a garage, Google.

The BackRub page is messier and better. It talks about URLs attempted, pages not yet attempted, robots exclusions, socket errors, programming languages, hardware, and disk capacity. It reads like a system somebody was actively trying to keep running.

The National Science Foundation’s history of the project describes BackRub as a prototype built from Stanford’s Digital Library work. Page and Brin used links to construct a ranking method that developed into PageRank, and by 1998 the project had moved toward the company that became Google.

Ancient Web: Gaby.de Kept CP/M and ZNODE51 Alive on the Web

Gaby.de looks like what happens when a working computer-history desk is left connected to the public web for a very long time.

The site centers on CP/M, the operating system closely associated with Digital Research and Gary Kildall, but it spreads outward into Z80 systems, old software, manuals, hardware and BBS history.

The CP/M Center includes downloads for multiple CP/M versions, tools for DOS, CP/M-86 material, FAQs, online manuals, links to original CP/M binaries and sources, the Digital Research Documentation Project, and information about moving CP/M data onto newer PCs.

Then there is ZNODE51.

A BBS survived as a web archive

ZNODE51 was a German Z-System and CP/M BBS. Historical CP/M FAQ material lists it as node 51 in Munich, and the machine behind it was an Altos 580.

Gaby.de’s own virtual museum records that Altos system as a circa-1983 multiuser computer with two Z80A processors, 64 to 192 KB of RAM, a 40 MB hard drive and support for CP/M 2.2, MP/M-80 and OASIS. It had been used as Z-Node 51 until 1992.

The archive now exposes roughly 150 MB of CP/M downloads and related tools.

That is not enormous by modern storage standards. It is enormous in historical context.

The site also keeps a virtual computer museum after the physical private collection was dissolved. There are meeting photos, Z-Fest material, Windows 3.1x resources, Z80 links and old Computer Journal articles.

For retrocomputing researchers, Gaby.de is useful because it preserves relationships between machines, software, user groups and BBS culture instead of reducing everything to isolated downloads.

For webmasters, the lesson is simpler: a small information architecture can outlive the hardware it describes.
