Ancient Web: Old Bricks Turned Stamped Clay Into an Industrial History Database

A brick with a name stamped into it looks like construction debris until somebody knows how to read the name. Brocross hosts one of the Web’s great examples of turning that kind of ordinary object into a serious historical index.

David Kitching’s homepage covers several interests: Cheshire dragonflies, canals, industrial archaeology, coal mining, limekilns and local history. The monster hiding inside it is Old Bricks: History at Your Feet, a site devoted to named British bricks and the works that produced them.

Old Bricks recently passed 10,000 brick images. That number is absurd until you understand the problem the collection solves. Brickworks opened, changed names, merged and disappeared. Clay pits were filled. Factories were demolished. Company records could be thin or nonexistent. A stamped brick may be one of the few durable objects still carrying the maker’s name.

The site organizes examples geographically and alphabetically, with separate sections for England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, foreign bricks, mystery marks, quarry tiles, roof tiles and other related material. Entries often combine photographs with trade-directory dates, works locations, ownership changes and contributor notes.

The mystery section is especially good Internet archaeology. People submit bricks whose initials or marks remain unidentified, and the page accumulates partial clues from finds in canals, excavations, beaches, gardens and demolition sites. One unknown brick pulled from deep water off Spain sits comfortably beside examples recovered from Manchester excavations and Thames mud.

This is not merely collecting for collecting’s sake. Archaeological reports, industrial-history researchers and local-history projects cite Brocross because the database can help connect a stamped object to a manufacturer, place and period. The main Brocross site also preserves extensive material on Poynton’s coal-mining history and other industrial sites.

There is a useful Web lesson here. Community contributions did not require inventing a social network. Kitching built a specialist reference, gave people a way to submit evidence, credited contributors and let the database become more valuable with every new object.

Ancient Web: Mercury Arc Rectifiers Glowed Before Silicon Took Over

Before a few slabs of semiconductor could quietly convert serious electrical power, engineers sometimes did the job with glass vessels full of mercury vapor glowing an alarming shade of blue.

Mike’s Electric Stuff documents mercury arc rectifiers, or MARs, with the enthusiasm of somebody who correctly realizes that obsolete industrial hardware is much more interesting when you can actually see how strange it was.

These devices converted alternating current to direct current at power levels ranging from kilowatts into the megawatt range. Their operation depended on an electrical arc between a mercury pool and metal anodes, with multiple anodes commonly used for multiphase power.

The site explains both the principle and the hardware: glass bulbs, large steel tanks, ignitors, transformers, cooling systems, and the eerie arc itself.

It also preserves the kind of practical detail that rarely survives in a clean textbook diagram.

One retired engineer described how large glass rectifiers were shipped upside down. The mercury had to be carefully moved into the base during installation without allowing its weight to enter and break one of the glass arms. Apparently “quart of mercury escaping from shattered industrial glassware” was a problem best assigned to the experienced crew.

Industrial electronics with visible drama

The photographs are the heart of the page.

There are small rectifier bulbs, museum examples, huge multi-anode units, steel-tank rectifiers, control gear, circuit diagrams, and installations that remained in service long after semiconductor rectifiers had made the technology obsolete.

The page records examples still operating in the early 2000s, including equipment used for lifts, mills, tram power, and battery systems. One restored system had reportedly worked for more than fifty years before retirement.

That longevity makes the transition to solid-state electronics easier to appreciate. Semiconductor rectifiers are smaller, safer, simpler, and dramatically less theatrical.

A silicon diode does not contain a visible pool of mercury with an electric arc leaping through vapor above it.

Progress has costs.

The site also links scanned technical articles and maintenance manuals, turning a collector page into a small practical archive of a technology that most electrical workers will never encounter alive.

Ancient Web: NewAlmaden.org Keeps California’s Mercury-Mining History Visible

California’s Gold Rush depended on another metal that gets much less romantic treatment: mercury.

NewAlmaden.org is maintained around the work of the New Almaden Quicksilver County Park Association, an organization involved in preserving and interpreting the historic mining district south of San Jose.

The site combines park information with museum material, photographs, newsletters, historical structures, event records, and preservation work.

The subject is unusually important to California history.

The mine behind the gold mines

Cinnabar, the red ore from which mercury can be recovered, had been used by Indigenous people in the region long before industrial mining.

Commercial mercury mining began in the 1840s, just before the California Gold Rush transformed the West.

Mercury mattered because it was widely used to extract gold and silver from ore.

The New Almaden mines became a major source, with tunnels, shafts, furnaces, worker settlements, roads, and a company community spread across the hills. The site notes that mining continued in various forms until the 1970s.

Today the landscape survives as Almaden Quicksilver County Park and a National Historic Landmark district.

The website is useful because it connects the industrial history to things that can still be visited: Casa Grande, the mining museum, historic structures, trails, old furnace areas, camp sites, and interpretive signs.

The association’s members have helped restore structures, build and maintain trails, create signage, lead history walks, and support the museum.

That is the kind of preservation work the web often fails to capture because it happens through decades of local volunteering rather than one dramatic restoration project.

Before the office became a laptop and a pile of browser tabs, it was a room full of specialized machinery.

The Early Office Museum was founded online in 2000 to research the history and evolution of offices, antique office machines, equipment, and business technology. It uses original documents, artifacts, and vintage photographs to explain the equipment that made administrative work function before software swallowed most of it.

There is no museum building.

The website is the museum.

The machinery of paperwork

That distinction makes the project interesting.

A physical museum might display a typewriter, adding machine, stapler, pencil sharpener, duplicator, filing cabinet, or calculating device behind glass. A web museum can instead show model variations, advertisements, patent-era changes, photographs, and the way an entire class of machines evolved.

The site says one person was responsible for the project for more than fifteen years, spending substantial time and money on it. Questions arrived from collectors, museums, exhibitors, and even movie producers trying to get historical office details right.

Some pages also used small animations to show devices such as staplers and pencil sharpeners actually moving. The museum even had to warn visitors that browser changes could break those demonstrations, which is itself now a piece of web history.

The homepage also contains a very old-web copyright battle. The museum objected strongly to its photographs being copied to Pinterest and said further improvement work had been suspended while it fought unauthorized reuse.

Whatever happened after that notice, it exposes one of the tensions of independent reference sites: people want the information to be easy to find, but the work can be stripped from its source just as easily.

For researchers, the Early Office Museum preserves a world of business technology that became invisible precisely because it worked well enough to be replaced.
