Ancient Web: AA5TB Has Been Publishing Ham Radio Notes Since 1998

AA5TB is what happens when a ham-radio notebook gets a domain name and then survives for nearly three decades.

The site belongs to Steve Yates of Fort Worth, Texas. He notes that the pages were first established in July 1998 and that he was first licensed as an amateur-radio operator in 1979.

That difference matters.

The website was not the beginning of the hobby. It was the point when decades of accumulated radio work started becoming searchable by everybody else.

The site covers antennas, small transmitting loops, end-fed half-wave antennas, dipoles, T-monopoles, QRP couplers, higher-power couplers, homemade baluns, coax for field use, and other practical topics that radio people can argue about indefinitely and then go outside to test anyway.

Personal technical pages age differently

A lot of technical websites become obsolete because they explain one software version, one product, or one API.

A page about the behavior of a piece of wire at radio frequency can last much longer.

AA5TB has that quality. Its subject matter is old physics being applied by actual people in garages, workshops, fields, portable stations, and back yards. Component choices change. Suppliers disappear. Radios improve. The wavelength is still the wavelength.

The site’s plain presentation also makes the underlying work easy to see. It is not trying to sell a lifestyle around amateur radio. It is mostly an accumulation of diagrams, formulas, measurements, designs, and explanations.

That was one of the strongest forms of the personal Web.

A person developed expertise, wrote down what worked, and linked the pages together. Search engines eventually made that private notebook discoverable to somebody on the other side of the world trying to solve the same problem.

Yates even quotes the FCC definition of amateur service on the homepage: radio communication for self-training, intercommunication, and technical investigations by authorized amateurs with a personal rather than commercial aim.

The website follows the same spirit.

It is a technical archive created because the material was worth sharing, not because every page needed a conversion funnel.

Ancient Web: RACES Kept Amateur Radio Ready for the Day the Phones Failed

Some old websites survive because somebody liked a cartoon. Others survive because, if everything goes badly enough, somebody may actually need the information.

RACES stands for Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service. The service itself dates to 1952; the national Web site says it was established on April 26, 1997, and its pages document the government-linked amateur-radio framework used for civil-defense and emergency communications.

The basic idea is straightforward.

When ordinary communications are disrupted or overloaded, trained amateur-radio operators can provide another path for messages between locations such as emergency operations centers, hospitals, shelters, public-safety agencies, and other places that suddenly become very important when the normal systems stop behaving normally.

The site is unusually useful because it does not treat that role as vague survivalist romance.

It links to the actual FCC rules, explains how RACES relates to Auxiliary Communications Service organizations, distinguishes RACES from ARES and other amateur-radio emergency groups, and maintains a large directory of state and local organizations.

The boring details are the important details

Emergency communication depends on things that are not exciting until they fail.

Who is authorized to transmit? Which service is being activated? What frequencies and modes are available? How do local volunteers fit into the government agency requesting help? How is equipment powered? Who already trained together before the emergency began?

The RACES pages address exactly those questions.

One surviving section even standardizes around Anderson Powerpole connectors. That sounds painfully mundane next to tornadoes, earthquakes, fires, and communications outages, but interoperability is made from mundane decisions. A radio that cannot connect to the available power source is an expensive brick with an antenna.

The main page identifies Ken Bourne, W6HK, as webmaster and shows a last update in June 2020. The site’s design still looks much closer to the late 1990s than to a modern emergency-management portal: simple navigation, small graphics, dense reference material, and almost no effort spent pretending the visitor came for entertainment.

That is part of its charm, but also part of its value.

It represents a Web where specialist organizations often built exactly the site they needed and then kept adding links until the thing became institutional memory.

Ancient Web: Radio Boulevard Preserves the Machinery Behind Real RTTY

Before radioteletype became a menu option in radio software, it involved actual teleprinters, terminal units, racks of electronics, paper, motors, and enough mechanical noise to make the operating position feel employed.

Henry Rogers, WA7YBS, built a page that documents that older physical world in unusual depth.

The Radio Boulevard article covers a short history of radioteletype, the companies and inventors behind teleprinter development, classic Teletype and Kleinschmidt machines, terminal units, converters, parts, accessories, station photographs, and practical restoration material.

One of the earliest milestones it notes is a U.S. Navy demonstration in August 1922 that sent radioteletype from an aircraft to a ground receiving station.

That matters because RTTY sits in an interesting place between radio history and computing history.

The messages were digital in the broad sense: characters encoded into signals and sent over radio. But the receiving end could be a machine full of gears, relays, selectors, motors, paper tape, and type mechanisms rather than a screen running a decoder.

The hardware is the history

Modern explanations of RTTY often begin with tone frequencies, baud rates, and software configuration. Useful, but incomplete.

The Radio Boulevard page makes the missing physical layer visible.

Photographs show complete stations with teleprinter machines, homebrew equipment, receivers, oscilloscopes, converters, and the heavy furniture needed to support all of it. The site also follows the technology into tube-type and later solid-state terminal units, showing how operators bridged radio signals to machines built to print characters mechanically.

That progression is easy to flatten into a timeline. It is much more understandable when you can see the boxes.

The page is also personal. Rogers documents stations he operated in Virginia City and Dayton, Nevada, and includes period photographs and QSL material from other operators. It is not a neutral museum catalog assembled after the fact. It comes from somebody who used, restored, and understood the equipment.

That gives the archive the texture specialist sites are good at preserving: which machines were common, which combinations actually worked, what the operating position looked like, and why certain pieces of equipment mattered to the people using them.

In 2026, most RTTY activity can happen inside one computer with one radio attached. That is wonderfully convenient and historically deceptive. The protocol survived while much of the machinery around it disappeared.

Ancient Web: K3PGP’s Experimenter’s Corner Runs From VLF to Light

K3PGP’s Experimenter’s Corner looks like what happens when a workbench gets enough disk space to become a website.

The site’s own slogan is “From VLF to Light,” and it earns the phrase. Its sections wander through astronomy, bicycle-mounted cameras, construction projects, lasers, moonbounce, software, radio experiments, test equipment, repair notes, and assorted technical material accumulated over years.

The pages identify the material as copyright 1995–2020 and warn that some of it may no longer be current. That warning is useful rather than embarrassing. The value of the archive is partly that it preserves how an experimenter actually worked through technologies that changed underneath him.

A laboratory with hyperlinks

The software section alone is a small museum of weak-signal computing. It includes material for PSK31, moon tracking, DSP experiments, helical-filter design, sound-over-IP, and visual radio modes. One PSK31 page targets Windows 3.1, Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows NT with SoundBlaster-compatible audio hardware.

That operating-system list dates the problem better than any redesign could.

Elsewhere the site crosses from radio into optics. Laser pages document experiments involving laser moonbounce, cloud bounce, laser radar, and an AO-40 laser experiment. Other sections preserve VLF work, telescope and eclipse material, old test-equipment repair, and even snapshots of projects such as SETI@home.

What ties it together is not a subject category. It is the experimenter’s habit of documenting the thing that was on the bench that week.

Modern technical publishing tends to split those interests into separate channels: amateur radio here, astronomy there, optics somewhere else, software on a code host. K3PGP leaves the connections visible. A receiver problem can lead into DSP. Astronomy can lead into moonbounce. A laser can become another communications path.

The site is a sprawling technical notebook built around antennas, amplifiers, receiving systems, transmission lines, baluns, RF noise, grounding, vacuum tubes, filters, relays, radiation fields, common-mode current, and the thousand small arguments that appear whenever radio people start comparing notes.

The table of contents alone feels like a graduate seminar conducted in somebody’s workshop.

Technical folklore gets measured

One recurring theme is skepticism toward explanations that get repeated because they sound plausible.

Pages dig into amplifier arcing, parasitic oscillation claims, tube failures, tank circuits, inductor behavior, receiving preamps, coax leakage, bandwidth, antenna coupling, shield currents, and ground systems. Instead of treating equipment failure as mysterious, the site repeatedly asks what voltage, current, impedance, field, or component behavior would actually produce the observed result.

The author even states the philosophy directly: Internet technical accuracy should improve through review and correction rather than hardening into folklore.

That sentence could serve as a mission statement for half the useful old web.

The archive is especially valuable because amateur radio lives between theory and hardware. Maxwell’s equations are real, but so are corroded connectors, badly routed coax, misleading meters, unknown soil conductivity, overloaded amplifiers, and fifty-year-old vacuum tubes.

A good technical page has to connect both worlds.

W8JI does that across dozens of narrowly focused articles. Somebody searching for a specific symptom can land on a page about relays, grounding, antenna isolation, 160-meter receiving systems, power supplies, or amplifier stability without needing to understand the site’s entire structure first.

That is excellent long-tail documentation.

Ancient Web: WB6NVH Built a Virtual Museum of Police and Mobile Radio

A police radio installed in a 1955 Buick is not the kind of object most museums can justify an entire room for. Geoff Fors gave it a website instead.

The site covers an extraordinary range of land-mobile and utility radio history.

Its largest section documents California Highway Patrol radio equipment from 1938 onward, with separate chapters for different eras and additional pages for motorcycle radios and newer systems.

Elsewhere are Bell System car telephones, Motorola police radios, GE two-way equipment, forestry radios, marine receivers, portable HF sets, programming instructions, unusual production hardware, and mystery equipment still waiting to be identified.

Restoration knowledge hides in the paperwork

The CHP material is valuable because it goes past photographs.

Fors explains that annual vehicle installation guidebooks contained wiring diagrams, part numbers, and drawings showing how radio systems were installed in specific patrol cars.

For somebody restoring a police vehicle accurately, that documentation can matter as much as the radio itself.

The site preserves information from some of those materials and asks owners of surviving guidebooks to scan them.

That is grassroots preservation in its most practical form.

The object is not enough.

Future restorers need the cable routing, control head, mounting arrangement, model number, connector, and year-specific wiring.

The homepage was still being updated in 2026, including material on contemporary CHP systems, even while retaining long-running historical sections reaching back to prewar mobile radio.

That continuity turns the site into more than nostalgia.

It becomes a bridge between collectors, restorers, communications historians, and working radio technology.

Ancient Web: Noji’s Ham Radio Pages Turned a Personal Notebook Into a Reference Library

A lot of modern hobby sites are really storefronts with three blog posts attached. Noji’s ham-radio pages feel more like somebody kept expanding a personal binder until it became useful to strangers.

The section is built around amateur radio as a working hobby rather than a lifestyle brand. There are pages for people who have not taken the license test yet, pages for people who just received a call sign, and pages for operators who want specific information about frequencies, repeaters, nets, contesting, equipment and operating practice.

The structure is old-web practical. A visitor can move through a glossary, licensing information, study material, antenna basics, emergency communications, clubs, public-service resources and contact lists without being forced through a tutorial funnel.

A website that behaves like an Elmer

Ham-radio operators traditionally use the word “Elmer” for an experienced operator who helps a newcomer learn the ropes.

Noji’s site effectively tries to do that in HTML.

The new-ham material acknowledges a problem every specialist hobby has: beginners often do not know enough yet to know what questions to ask. Instead of hiding that complexity, the site exposes it through linked explanations and practical references.

There are also pages for scheduled nets, contest calendars, educational resources and regulatory material. Some entries are highly local; others are useful anywhere. That mixture is exactly what personal reference sites do well. They do not need every page to serve the same audience.

The result is not visually fashionable, but it is dense with named things: modes, bands, call signs, organizations, contest names, technical terms and equipment categories. Search engines understand specificity, and humans do too.

Ancient Web: Early Radio History Has Been Online Since 1996

Thomas H. White started putting early radio history on the Web on September 30, 1996. Thirty years later, the site is still doing the same job and its original articles were still receiving updates in 2026.

The site’s main focus is the United States from roughly 1897 through 1927, when “wireless” went from experimental signaling to broadcasting, amateur radio, commercial networks and government regulation.

That is already a useful niche. White went much deeper than a normal historical overview.

The strange details survived too

The site is organized into more than twenty major sections covering the electric telegraph, wireless telegraphy, vacuum tubes, early broadcasting, amateur operators, government regulation, radio networks and other pieces of the transition.

There is a section on the origins of words including radio, broadcast and ham. Another digs into United States callsign policies and the fascination with three-letter station calls. There are pages on pioneer broadcast stations, early telephone-based entertainment systems and the awkward process of figuring out how to regulate a technology that had spread faster than the rules around it.

And then there is section 21: “Fakes, Frauds, and Cranks.”

Every history archive should be honest enough to reserve shelf space for the cranks.

A large part of the value comes from period material. The site pulls together articles and extracts that let the old arguments, terminology and technical assumptions survive instead of flattening everything into a modern summary.

A long-running specialist site

White notes that the project originally lived on an ISP personal-page address before moving to its current domain in 2003. That little detail is part of Ancient Web history by itself. Many useful sites began as directories hanging off somebody else’s server and survived only because their owners cared enough to move them when the infrastructure changed.

For researchers, this is a deep reference. For webmasters, it is a case study in what happens when a narrow subject is documented consistently for decades: the site becomes difficult to replace.
