Ancient Web: Richard Bartle Saved the Paper Trail Behind MUDs

Richard Bartle did something historians dream about: he kept the paperwork.

Bartle, who created the original MUD with Roy Trubshaw at the University of Essex, built a personal website around an unusually deep collection of material from the beginning of multi-user online worlds. The archive contains papers, magazine articles, Usenet postings, reports, technical explanations, and historical documents stretching back to the era when a multiplayer online world was still a strange research-and-hobby experiment.

One of the most useful pages is his collection of formal texts. Bartle explains that his MUD documents go back to the beginning of the field and that he kept essentially everything he saw written about the subject. The point of putting it online was not nostalgia. It was access.

That decision aged very well.

Before MMOs had a vocabulary

The archive includes material from a period when people were still deciding what these systems were.

Bartle preserves his 1983 Practical Computing article, which he describes as the first published article about MUDs. There are early reports on multiplayer computer games, technical descriptions of parsers, Usenet posts, and the 1996 paper “Players Who Suit MUDs,” which became influential for its attempt to classify player motivations.

His pages also preserve corrections that would be easy to lose in second-hand histories. In one note, Bartle explains that an often-repeated date for the first MUD version was wrong: Roy Trubshaw wrote the first version in autumn 1978, while a later version followed in 1979.

That kind of correction is exactly why first-hand personal archives matter.

The site itself is also an artifact of the period it documents. Many pages carry dates from 1999. The design is basic, the navigation is mostly text, and the material is presented with the assumption that a reader came to actually read documents rather than scroll through a feed.

The result is more useful than a polished retrospective because it contains source material from people who were there.

Modern online games inherited enormous pieces of the MUD idea: persistent worlds, player identities, social spaces, virtual economies, role-playing, communities, moderation problems, and the eternal discovery that strangers connected to a network will immediately invent behavior the designers did not anticipate.

Ancient Web: Flatland’s 3DML Tried to Turn HTML-Style Text Into Walkable Websites

Long before every browser wanted hardware-accelerated 3D, Flatland proposed a wonderfully web-native solution: describe a virtual place in a text file and let a plug-in turn it into somewhere you could walk.

3DML—3D Markup Language—borrowed the basic mental model of HTML. Authors wrote structured text, assembled reusable objects, and published the result as an Internet-ready 3D environment called a SPOT.

Flatland’s Rover software handled the viewing.

The surviving tutorial targets Rover 1.5.1 and Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows NT. It even recommends that beginners work in Notepad.

This was 3D publishing before the toolchain became an industry.

The world was an ASCII grid

A 3DML file used recognizable markup such as <SPOT>, <HEAD>, <BODY>, <MAP>, and <LEVEL>.

The map itself could be laid out as characters in a grid. Individual symbols referred to blocks occupying standardized 256-by-256-by-256 units, so the author could construct rooms and landscapes almost like drawing a level with letters.

The format was not limited to silent geometry. Tutorial material describes text, two-dimensional graphics, sound, animations, and streaming video as things that could be incorporated into a SPOT.

That makes 3DML interesting for reasons beyond nostalgia.

The project treated a 3D world as a document.

You could inspect its source, understand its pieces, reuse blocks, edit it in ordinary text software, and publish it through the same general infrastructure as a webpage. Flatland even supplied the familiar ecosystem of old-web badges: “Powered by 3DML,” “Download Flatland Rover,” and directories pointing visitors toward other worlds.

The idea did not become the dominant web architecture. Browser standards moved elsewhere, plug-ins aged badly, and modern 3D engines became much more capable.

But the abandoned branch is historically useful precisely because it shows another plausible answer to the question: what should a website become once it has depth?

Ancient Web: Cyberwolfman’s Web Asylum Preserved a Whole Personal Internet

Cyberwolfman’s Web Asylum is not a website you summarize so much as one you enter and eventually realize you have lost track of the front door.

The author describes it as a decades-old, ad-free site with nothing for sale and says many of its pages were made in the 1990s using a text editor.

The site map supports the claim by sheer accumulation.

There are pages about ActiveWorlds and other 3D-chat systems, movie reviews, local restaurants and bars, privacy, PGP, web browsers, WinMX, green lasers, Nikola Tesla, stories, jokes, photographs, games, health, local complaints, dictionaries, virtual worlds, and years of blog entries.

It is difficult to imagine a contemporary publishing system encouraging this structure.

A surviving record of early virtual-world culture

The ActiveWorlds material is especially interesting.

One long-running page tracks the service through the early 2000s, discussing changes to tourist access, world counts, pricing, world ratings, competing 3D-chat systems, interface changes, and community disputes.

Whatever one thinks of the author’s opinions, the page records what using these systems actually felt like to one participant while they were still active social spaces.

That is valuable because early virtual-world history is often reconstructed from product announcements and screenshots after the fact. Personal pages preserve irritation, gossip, prices, features, social rules, and the tiny details nobody thought would matter later.

The rest of the site behaves the same way.

Instead of constantly deleting old sections to maintain a clean brand, Cyberwolfman kept adding rooms. A restaurant review can coexist with an essay on e-mail privacy. A 3D-chat guide can sit beside an Alice Cooper page. The result is not tidy, but it is deeply authored.

Ancient Web: Contact Consortium Built Virtual-World Community Before ‘Metaverse’ Became Marketing

The Contact Consortium was talking about avatars, shared virtual worlds, online communities, and virtual learning when all of those ideas still sounded like science fiction with a modem attached.

Its old homepage calls the organization “Contact, Culture and Community in Virtual World CyberSpace.” The copyright line begins in 1995, and the surviving page points to conferences held from 1996 through 2004, mailing lists, special-interest groups, publications, projects, and an event calendar that finally stalls in 2006.

This is not a retrospective written after virtual worlds became fashionable.

It is the thing itself.

Cyberspace as a place people might actually live

The projects scattered across the page now read like a catalog of ideas the broader Internet would spend the next few decades rediscovering.

There is VLearn3D for virtual worlds and learning. Biota explores digital biology. TheU experiments with a virtual university. Sherwood Forest is described as a virtual village in cyberspace.

The site links to an avatar reenactment of the Apollo moon landing and documentation of a real virtual wedding.

It also preserves gatherings such as Travatars 2004 and AvaMars, along with architecture and world-design projects.

The terminology is charmingly pre-standardized. “CyberSpace” still gets the capital S treatment. “Avatar Teleport” is presented as an invitation to enter a new cyberspace. The underlying assumption is that online environments are not merely screens to look at; they are places where people might gather, perform, build institutions, hold ceremonies, teach, and form subcultures.

That makes the site useful now.

Modern discussion tends to package these concepts around whichever platform is currently selling them. The Contact Consortium preserves an earlier period when researchers, artists, builders, and enthusiasts were still trying to discover what social virtual worlds were for.
