Ancient Web: AA5TB Has Been Publishing Ham Radio Notes Since 1998

AA5TB is what happens when a ham-radio notebook gets a domain name and then survives for nearly three decades.

The site belongs to Steve Yates of Fort Worth, Texas. He notes that the pages were first established in July 1998 and that he was first licensed as an amateur-radio operator in 1979.

That difference matters.

The website was not the beginning of the hobby. It was the point when decades of accumulated radio work started becoming searchable by everybody else.

The site covers antennas, small transmitting loops, end-fed half-wave antennas, dipoles, T-monopoles, QRP couplers, higher-power couplers, homemade baluns, coax for field use, and other practical topics that radio people can argue about indefinitely and then go outside to test anyway.

Personal technical pages age differently

A lot of technical websites become obsolete because they explain one software version, one product, or one API.

A page about the behavior of a piece of wire at radio frequency can last much longer.

AA5TB has that quality. Its subject matter is old physics being applied by actual people in garages, workshops, fields, portable stations, and back yards. Component choices change. Suppliers disappear. Radios improve. The wavelength is still the wavelength.

The site’s plain presentation also makes the underlying work easy to see. It is not trying to sell a lifestyle around amateur radio. It is mostly an accumulation of diagrams, formulas, measurements, designs, and explanations.

That was one of the strongest forms of the personal Web.

A person developed expertise, wrote down what worked, and linked the pages together. Search engines eventually made that private notebook discoverable to somebody on the other side of the world trying to solve the same problem.

Yates even quotes the FCC definition of amateur service on the homepage: radio communication for self-training, intercommunication, and technical investigations by authorized amateurs with a personal rather than commercial aim.

The website follows the same spirit.

It is a technical archive created because the material was worth sharing, not because every page needed a conversion funnel.

CacheRat’s 1,967 Ancient Web Domains research list keeps turning up ham-radio sites because radio amateurs were extremely well prepared for the early Web. They already liked networks, technical documentation, strange identifiers, and talking to people they had never met.

HTML was basically another mode.

Some ham-radio sites show the station. W8JI.com tries to explain why the station works.

The site is a sprawling technical notebook built around antennas, amplifiers, receiving systems, transmission lines, baluns, RF noise, grounding, vacuum tubes, filters, relays, radiation fields, common-mode current, and the thousand small arguments that appear whenever radio people start comparing notes.

The table of contents alone feels like a graduate seminar conducted in somebody’s workshop.

Technical folklore gets measured

One recurring theme is skepticism toward explanations that get repeated because they sound plausible.

Pages dig into amplifier arcing, parasitic oscillation claims, tube failures, tank circuits, inductor behavior, receiving preamps, coax leakage, bandwidth, antenna coupling, shield currents, and ground systems. Instead of treating equipment failure as mysterious, the site repeatedly asks what voltage, current, impedance, field, or component behavior would actually produce the observed result.

The author even states the philosophy directly: Internet technical accuracy should improve through review and correction rather than hardening into folklore.

That sentence could serve as a mission statement for half the useful old web.

The archive is especially valuable because amateur radio lives between theory and hardware. Maxwell’s equations are real, but so are corroded connectors, badly routed coax, misleading meters, unknown soil conductivity, overloaded amplifiers, and fifty-year-old vacuum tubes.

A good technical page has to connect both worlds.

W8JI does that across dozens of narrowly focused articles. Somebody searching for a specific symptom can land on a page about relays, grounding, antenna isolation, 160-meter receiving systems, power supplies, or amplifier stability without needing to understand the site’s entire structure first.

That is excellent long-tail documentation.

The radios age. RF does not.

Ancient Web: HDTV Primer Modeled TV Antennas Instead of Trusting the Box

Antenna packaging has always had one technical weakness: the marketing department gets to print numbers on it.

HDTV Primer took the problem in a different direction. Rather than trusting manufacturer gain claims, the site’s author modeled a long list of commercially available TV antennas and published graphs showing how their performance changed across channels.

The page dates to October 2009 and reads like somebody got annoyed enough with antenna advertising to build the comparison they wanted to see.

Raw gain, net gain, and the part the box leaves out

The models were produced with NEC-4/EZNEC4-style antenna simulation software. The site explains why modeling can be useful: physical measurements are affected by surroundings, while a simulation can compare antennas in controlled free-space conditions.

More importantly, the page distinguishes between raw gain and net gain.

Raw gain describes how much energy the antenna captures in a direction. Net gain accounts for power lost because the antenna and transmission line are not perfectly impedance matched.

That difference produces some wonderfully inconvenient graphs.

The site compares indoor loops, log-periodic designs, Yagis, four-bay and eight-bay arrays, old Channel Master antennas, Winegard models, Antennas Direct products, VHF/UHF combination antennas, and rabbit ears. Several discontinued models remain in the charts, which has made the page more useful with age rather than less.

There are also practical discussions of beam width, side nulls, VHF performance from nominally UHF antennas, and why some published gain figures should be treated cautiously.

This is old-web technical culture at its best: not a product roundup, not affiliate links, and not a single “best antenna” answer.

It is somebody showing the curves.

The antennas have changed. ATSC has changed. The underlying RF problems have not.
