Ancient Web: The Neitherworld Built a Beetlejuice Fandom Before the Platforms

The Neitherworld began in 1997 because C. “Sparky” Read looked around the Web, noticed a shortage of Beetlejuice sites, and decided that was apparently a problem worth fixing personally. Before fandom was organized around wikis, social networks, and giant media databases, that was how a surprising amount of culture got documented.

Read’s own history places the beginning around mid-April 1997 as a directory on a University of Southern California web account. The project covered both the 1988 film and the animated series, but the cartoon side eventually became the larger archive.

Building a fan site then involved considerably more manual labor than opening an account somewhere. Read describes making screen grabs, sound clips, and video files using a brother’s computer during the summer of 1997. Those files then escaped into the wider Web, where copies turned up on other sites. The same thing happened with written material: the surviving episode-guide notes discuss earlier work being copied and circulated without credit.

That irritation produced something useful. The Neitherworld developed its own detailed animated-series episode guide along with fan fiction, fan art, multimedia, character material, and other resources. In April 1999 the project moved onto its own theneitherworld.com domain.

This is a good specimen of what fan infrastructure looked like before the word “platform” swallowed most of the Web. One maintainer decided what needed documenting, learned enough HTML and media handling to publish it, accepted contributions from other fans, and gradually turned a personal interest into a reference site.

It also preserves a less romantic part of early online culture. Images and audio were easy to copy. Attribution was inconsistent. Somebody could spend days creating a guide or capturing media and then watch it reappear elsewhere. The technology changed, but that argument certainly survived.

For researchers in 2026, an old fan site can contain information that is difficult to reconstruct from modern databases: what fans cared about at the time, which episodes or characters generated discussion, how media was exchanged, and what terminology the community actually used. Ancient Web: This Boating Guide Was Tested in Netscape 2.0 for Unix

Geoff Kuenning’s boating page has one of the better compatibility statements left on the old Web: it was tested with Netscape Navigator 2.0 for Unix. Nearly thirty years later, the page is still doing what it was built to do—helping somebody remember a pile of rules that are much easier to recall when they rhyme.

Kuenning explains that he assembled the material as a beginner rather than presenting himself as a maritime authority. That distinction matters. The page is essentially a public set of study notes covering navigation lights, sound signals, buoyage, collision regulations, compass work, weather, boat terminology, and the other information that starts accumulating when somebody learns to operate a boat safely.

The memorable parts are the mnemonics.

A vessel showing red over red is remembered as “Red over Red / This boat is dead.” A trawler becomes “Green over White / Trawling tonight.” Five short horn blasts become “Blast quick five / To stay alive.” And the familiar American buoyage reminder survives as “Red Right Returning.”

These are not offered as magical replacements for knowing the rules. Kuenning explicitly warns that memory aids are no substitute for the official regulations and proper seamanship. That makes the page more useful, not less: it knows exactly what kind of document it is.

The copyright dates are 1996 and 1997, and the page permits nonprofit and educational reproduction with attribution. Its construction is equally period-specific. There is no application shell, no cookie banner, no account, and no script required to reveal the next definition. It is a long, organized reference page designed to be read, searched, printed, and linked.

That old information architecture aged unusually well. A modern webmaster looking at it can see why. The headings describe the material. The text carries the information. Links lead somewhere useful. Almost nothing stands between the reader and the reason the page exists.

For historians of the Web, the Netscape note dates the culture as neatly as a browser screenshot. For boaters, some of the material remains recognizable because navigation rules and the human need for dumb little rhymes have both proved more durable than browser wars.

Ancient Web: Topher’s Castle Is a 1997 Homepage That Never Learned to Pick a Topic

Modern websites are repeatedly told to pick a niche. Topher’s Castle, established in July 1997, appears to have received this advice and spent nearly three decades refusing it.

The homepage calls itself “A Great Site for Everyone!” and then makes a serious attempt to prove it. The navigation includes advice and opinions, air-travel information, baby names, cast-iron collecting, Christmas material, famous birthdays, a Homer Simpson archive, kids’ pages, music, NASA, surnames, television, a voting booth, and a Weird Picture of the Week.

That is not a content strategy. It is a person having a website.

Topher’s Castle belongs to an era when a personal homepage was allowed to represent the full mess of somebody’s interests. A page did not need to satisfy an audience profile. If the webmaster liked television and family material and space exploration and cookware, all of it could live under the same roof. The architecture was the person.

That freedom produced some famously chaotic navigation, but it also created sites with personality that is difficult to reproduce when every subject is split into a different account, platform, or branded project. A visitor could arrive for one useful page and accidentally discover that the same person had built twenty other things they never would have searched for.

The site’s age makes the effect stronger. A personal homepage launched in 1997 and still reachable in 2026 is no longer just a pile of unrelated interests. It is a longitudinal artifact. Sections, terminology, link styles, and subject choices record what people thought was worth putting on the public Web when having your own domain or homepage felt like possession of actual territory.

There is a lesson here for modern independent sites. Focus is useful, especially when people need to understand quickly what a business or publication does. But the Web also lost something when every stray interest was treated as an error in positioning. Personal sites could be weird precisely because nobody had to explain the conversion funnel for the NASA page sitting next to the baby-name page.

Ancient Web: StonePages Put Europe’s Megaliths on the Web in 1995

StonePages is what happens when two people start putting photographs of ancient stones on the Web in 1995 and then simply keep going. Long before location apps, social photo feeds, and polished heritage portals, Diego Meozzi and Paola Arosio were building an online guide to European megalithic sites one visit at a time.

The site’s own history is unusually well documented. It says the project began in 1995 and was originally intended as a guide to the major megalithic monuments of Europe. Meozzi and Arosio did not just compile place names from books. They traveled, photographed sites themselves, wrote descriptions, and distinguished firsthand material from information gathered from other sources.

That matters. StonePages is not merely an old directory whose links survived. It contains fieldwork.

By 2001 the project reported more than 5,000 photographs and information on over 500 archaeological sites. The subject matter ranges across stone circles, standing stones, dolmens, chambered tombs, alignments, and other prehistoric monuments. Famous places sit alongside structures that are much easier to miss unless somebody has already done the legwork.

The website also preserved its own technical evolution. It was renamed Stone Pages in 1998 and went through several redesigns as the Web changed. Its data moved from a flat-file system into an SQL-backed database. That little detail makes the site useful to web historians as well as archaeology readers: this was a serious information project adapting to the Web while both the tools and expectations were still being invented.

There is also Stone Pages Archaeo News, which expanded the project beyond a photographic field guide into an archaeology-news resource. The result is less like a single homepage and more like a small independent publishing operation that happened to grow out of two people visiting old stones.

For a modern webmaster, StonePages is a reminder that useful sites can begin with a brutally simple advantage: the creator has gone somewhere, seen something, measured something, photographed something, or otherwise done work that cannot be generated by rearranging everybody else’s summaries.

That is also why the site still matters in 2026. Search results can tell you that a monument exists. StonePages preserves the accumulated decisions of people who spent years deciding which monuments were worth finding, how to describe them, and what they actually looked like on the ground.

Ancient Web: The Pace Taught Motorcyclists Not to Race the Street

One of the more useful things the old Web did was quietly rescue magazine articles from the month they were supposed to disappear.

Nick Ienatsch’s The Pace first appeared in Motorcyclist in November 1991. Copies and mirrors spread through motorcycle club pages, personal sites, mailing-list resources, and forum stickies because the essay addressed a problem riders kept having long after the issue left the newsstand.

How do you ride a capable motorcycle quickly on a public road without turning the road into a racetrack?

Ienatsch’s answer was to remove the parts that make street riding look and feel like competition.

No drag-race launches down the straights. No last-second braking contests. No passing your friends to prove a point. Set corner speed early, look through the turn, keep a margin for things you cannot see, and treat the rider ahead as somebody you are traveling with rather than somebody you need to defeat.

The essay calls that approach The Pace.

The important word is not speed. It is control.

Ienatsch developed the idea while working at Motorcyclist in the 1980s and riding with experienced racers who still needed to survive Sunday morning and report to work afterward. The street contains gravel, driveways, police, animals, blind corners, bad pavement, trucks over the centerline, and people who have never heard of your beautifully chosen apex.

A racetrack is engineered around performance.

A public road is merely willing to let you pass through.

That distinction helped the article endure. Later versions and “The Pace 2.0” refined the advice as motorcycle and tire technology improved, but the cultural core stayed recognizable: leave competition at the track and build the group ride around smoothness, judgment, visibility, and margin.

The Web mattered to that survival.

Before every magazine had a searchable archive, enthusiast sites recopied the reference material their communities considered too useful to lose. Some of those copies became easier to find than the publication that originally printed the piece. Riders linked newcomers to them for years.

That is a form of preservation, even when nobody called it that.

Australian Valve Amps opens with a warning that old amplifiers contain voltages capable of killing you, then immediately proceeds to become one of the friendliest rabbit holes on the subject.

The site has been online since July 2004 and concentrates on Australian and New Zealand valve amplifiers for guitar, bass, accordion, keyboards, harp, and public-address use from roughly the 1930s through the 1970s.

That focus matters because local amplifier history is easy to flatten into the familiar American and British brands.

Here the names are different.

Goldentone. Strauss. Maton. AWA. STC. Challenge. Concord. Amplivox. Small makers, obscure models, mystery chassis, catalog scans, service information, circuit diagrams, photographs, and contributions from people who still have the things sitting in sheds and workshops.

The site’s own description is better than any attempt to make it respectable: circuits, pictures, data, history, observations, oddities, tips, tricks, traps, and links — “From the Great to the Ghastly, from the Gory to the Gold.”

It is also aggressively independent in the old-Web sense.

The pages advertise no products. There are no cookies, popups, frames, or Java. The site calls itself plain hand-coded HTML and openly mocks “physics-free speaker cables” and magical capacitor thinking. A restoration page may sit beside a joke, a technical note, a mystery amplifier, or a warning that touching 600 volts is an extremely efficient occupational-health lesson.

Under the humor is serious repair knowledge.

There are sections on mains wiring, grounding, hum, heaters, common circuit practices, amplifier technicians, component safety, and do-it-yourself designs. The archive is useful precisely because it does not pretend every old circuit is automatically good or safe.

That distinction becomes more valuable as the hardware ages.

A forty- or sixty-year-old amplifier is not just a collectible object. It is a high-voltage machine containing parts that drift, dry out, leak, fail, and occasionally retain enough charge to make nostalgia medically inconvenient.

Ancient Web: The Lighthouse Directory Has 24,800 Lights and Keeps Counting

The Lighthouse Directory is what happens when a useful list refuses to stop growing for twenty-seven years.

The project was founded in 1999, during the famous relocation of North Carolina’s Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. Its purpose was straightforward: collect reliable information about lighthouses and connect researchers to other good sources on the Web.

It now covers more than 24,800 lighthouses around the world.

That number is not a static brag buried on an abandoned homepage. The site is still being maintained. Regional pages are checked and revised, new photographs are added, restoration news appears on the front page, and the directory continues correcting the slow decay that happens when thirty thousand outbound links meet the real Internet.

The entries are compact but practical.

A listing can include when a light was established, tower height, focal-plane height, flash pattern, construction, current status, ownership, access information, photographs, maps, and links to preservation groups or official light lists. Destroyed lighthouses remain in the directory rather than disappearing simply because the tower did.

That last part is important.

A lighthouse directory eventually becomes a directory of absence too.

The site also defines its terms instead of assuming everyone already knows them. What counts as a lighthouse? How is it different from a beacon? What is a light station? What does focal plane mean? The Directory settles on a practical definition: a substantial tower, at least four meters tall, built to carry a navigational light.

By February 2009, after the Hainan page was added, the listings covered the entire world. “Entire world” did not mean finished. New lights are found, structures are demolished, access changes, towers are automated, restorations begin, links rot, and countries revise their own records.

So the work continues.

This is one of the best kinds of old Web project: narrow enough for one person’s editorial judgment to matter, broad enough to become infrastructure for everybody else studying the subject.

It is hosted by ibiblio at the University of North Carolina, another long-running corner of the Internet built around keeping useful information publicly reachable.

Ancient Web: Don Eyles Explains What the Apollo 11 Computer Alarms Actually Meant

The Apollo 11 computer alarms are usually told as a thirty-second story: alarms appeared, Mission Control said continue, and the landing succeeded. Don Eyles’s version takes about as long as it should.

Eyles was one of the programmers who developed software for the Lunar Module guidance computer at the MIT Instrumentation Laboratory. His paper, presented to an American Astronautical Society conference in 2004 and expanded online with illustrations and comments, explains the system from the perspective of somebody who had actually lived inside the code.

The famous Apollo 11 alarms are only part of it.

During powered descent, an interface problem involving the rendezvous radar consumed roughly 13 percent of the computer’s duty cycle. The overloaded computer issued program alarms and restarted work in a controlled way, discarding lower-priority tasks while preserving the important ones.

That distinction matters.

The computer was not simply “crashing.” Its executive system was doing something recognizably modern: managing scarce processing time under overload and keeping the critical work alive.

Eyles also describes a less famous problem involving the Lunar Module’s descent-engine throttle control. Erroneous assumptions and a marginally stable control algorithm could produce violent throttle oscillations. His account reaches backward to Apollo 5 and forward through changes made after the early lunar missions, showing how flight software evolved because the spacecraft kept teaching the programmers things the simulations had not.

Then there is the hardware.

The Apollo Guidance Computer worked with 36K words of fixed memory and 2K words of erasable memory. The Lunar Module and Command Module each carried one. Eyles notes that, counted together, the Moon landing was accomplished with about 152 kilobytes of onboard computer memory.

That number is fun trivia until you read what the software actually did.

Navigation. Guidance. Engine sequencing. Displays. Radar interfaces. Crew interaction through the DSKY. Real-time task scheduling. Failure recovery. All while flying a machine that could not be rebooted by walking over to it.

The page matters in 2026 because it is not a retrospective assembled from simplified quotations. It is a technical witness explaining the architecture, mistakes, fixes, naming conventions, people, and operational pressure in enough detail that the old software becomes engineering again instead of mythology.

Ancient Web: This Dorothea Lange Gallery Keeps the Original FSA Captions

Everybody knows Migrant Mother. Far fewer people have sat with forty-two Dorothea Lange photographs and read the government field captions attached to the people standing inside them.

The History Place’s Migrant Farm Families page does exactly that.

The photographs were made before World War II for the U.S. Farm Security Administration while Lange documented the living conditions of migrant agricultural workers and their families across the American West. The gallery keeps the images grouped by circumstance rather than celebrity: Dust Bowl farms, highways west, roadside camps, tents, harvest work, relief lines, sick children, cooperative farms, and families still moving.

The captions are the part worth slowing down for.

They identify places, wages, routes, illnesses, failed farms, family histories, and temporary jobs. One family abandoned its Oklahoma farm after drought and kept moving toward Bakersfield by picking cotton for enough money to buy food and gasoline. Another worker had spent thirteen years traveling from crop to crop with his family. A group of carrot workers described making barely enough in half a day to call it wages.

That information changes the photographs.

Without the captions, a viewer sees hardship.

With them, the photographs become records of how hardship actually moved through geography, labor markets, weather, debt, residency rules, transportation, and family life.

The page itself is also a good example of an older editorial Web. There is no infinite scroll, recommendation engine, animated timeline, or attempt to turn the photographs into a multimedia experience. The site gives you the pictures, the captions, some basic organization, and enough empty space to look at them.

That restraint works particularly well here.

The Internet has spent years rediscovering old public-domain and government photography one viral image at a time. Pages like this preserve the set instead of just the icon.

That matters because Lange’s power was not limited to one mother looking away from the camera. It was cumulative. Roads, camps, children, broken cars, work crews, relief checks, dust, and temporary shelter form a system when seen together.

Ancient Web: Siphonophores.org Explains the Ocean Animal Made of Animals

A siphonophore looks like the ocean started assembling one animal and then decided a committee would work better.

The site explains a group of marine animals that are colonial in the literal biological sense. A siphonophore begins from a single embryo, then produces many genetically identical bodies that remain physically integrated. Those bodies specialize: some catch prey, some swim, some reproduce, and others handle different parts of keeping the colony alive.

The Portuguese man o’ war is the famous relative, but the stranger examples live deep offshore.

Siphonophores.org grew out of specialist research rather than general-interest science publishing. Casey Dunn and collaborators have used field observations, morphology, development, molecular data, and deep-sea imaging to study how these animals evolved their extreme division of labor.

That background matters because siphonophores are unusually difficult animals to understand from preserved specimens alone.

They are fragile. They can be long. Their parts separate easily. A net can turn a coherent colony into a bag of pieces before anyone has a chance to understand how those pieces functioned together.

Remote-operated vehicles changed that. Researchers could finally watch intact colonies drifting, swimming, extending tentacles, and hunting hundreds of meters down.

Some species are enormous. Footage associated with the site has shown Apolemia colonies tens of meters long. Others, including Erenna, use bioluminescent structures as lures. The weirdness is not decorative. It is functional anatomy operating at a scale and organization that does not map neatly onto our usual idea of an individual animal.

The site’s value in 2026 is its narrowness.

A general encyclopedia can tell you what a siphonophore is. A specialist site can spend pages on body organization, life cycles, terminology, species, phylogeny, and the historical confusion produced by trying to describe colonies from fragments.

That depth is exactly what the independent Web used to be unusually good at producing. One person or research group could build the reference they wished existed and leave it online for the next curious stranger.
