Ancient Web: Club Nintendo Archives Rescued the UK Magazine Everyone Forgot

Club Nintendo Archives exists because one Nintendo collector discovered an entire magazine series he had somehow never heard of.

The site documents the UK Club Nintendo promotional magazine that ran during the first half of the 1990s. Its creator explains that he only discovered the publication after using eBay in the early 2000s, then found that information about the British edition was surprisingly thin compared with better-known magazines like Nintendo Magazine System, Super Play, and Nintendo Power.

So he started building the reference he wanted to find.

The website went online on Neocities in 2017. By 2020 its magazine database was complete, and the site had grown far beyond a personal checklist into a detailed index of a largely forgotten corner of Nintendo’s publishing history.

Promotional material becomes historical material

The interesting thing about Club Nintendo is that it was not primarily an independent games magazine.

It was promotional material.

That probably helped it disappear from memory. A commercial magazine is collected because people think of it as a publication. A promotional magazine is easier to treat as temporary, even when it contains reviews, previews, tips, competitions, art, product information, and contemporary assumptions about what Nintendo thought British players cared about.

Club Nintendo Archives preserves that context.

The site tracks which games appeared in which issues, keeps the magazine’s UK-localized naming conventions, and explains regional oddities such as Contra becoming Probotector and Star Fox becoming Starwing in Britain.

That kind of detail is collector gold because it records not just the games but how they were presented in one market at one moment.

The site timeline also shows what can happen when a narrow preservation project finds an audience. It passed one million views in 2020 and ten million by the end of 2022. In 2025 the webmaster began adding downloadable versions of issues from his own collection.

This is a newer site than many Ancient Web subjects, but it is doing classic old-Web work: one person, one obsession, hand-built pages, detailed indexing, and information too specific for a general encyclopedia to care about properly.

Ancient Web: Nintendo’s Super Mario 64 Page Admitted the Web Could Not Explain 3D Mario

Nintendo’s old Super Mario 64 page contains one of the most charming problems in early game marketing: how do you sell a revolutionary 3D game through a Web page that can barely move?

The Japanese page introduces the game’s setup in the familiar way. Peach invites Mario to the castle with the promise of cake. Mario arrives, the castle is strangely empty, Bowser’s voice appears, and Mario eventually discovers that the paintings hanging inside the castle lead into entire worlds.

Then Nintendo has to explain why any of this is exciting.

The page calls the new adventure fundamentally different because it is full 3D action. It walks through Power Stars, painting worlds, Bowser’s takeover, and the basic structure that would become instantly familiar to anyone who played the game.

But the most interesting part comes later.

Nintendo essentially apologizes for the limitations of the medium.

The page says that the feeling of this new Mario cannot really be communicated over the Internet and that the pleasure of full 3D action has to be experienced by actually playing the game.

That is a perfect 1996 sentence.

The Web was trying to advertise something it could not yet reproduce

Today a game page would autoplay trailers, stream high-resolution gameplay, embed interactive media, and probably ask permission to send notifications before you found the screenshots.

Nintendo’s page works with what it had.

It offers a series of highlight scenes visitors can click through: Mario fighting the Whomp King, the penguin slide, flying Mario, swimming, Metal Mario, and Mario versus Bowser. There is also a link promoting the original soundtrack CD.

The result is a static Web page trying to explain a game built around movement.

That mismatch makes the page historically useful. Super Mario 64 helped establish how 3D console movement and camera space could feel. The website preserves the marketing problem before streaming video made the solution obvious.

It is also remarkable simply because Nintendo still hosts the page. Large corporate websites are usually redesigned until the early layers disappear completely. Here, the old HTML remains reachable on Nintendo’s own domain, with its original small images, Japanese text, and period presentation intact.

Ancient Web: F-Zero World Record History Keeps Thirty-Five Years of Lap Times Alive

A speedrun leaderboard tells you who is fastest now. F-Zero World Record History tries to answer the much harder question: who was fastest before anybody thought to save the video?

The site tracks time-trial records across F-Zero on Super Nintendo, F-Zero X, Maximum Velocity, and GP Legend. Current records are presented with players, countries, dates, modes, vehicles, and links to video where available.

But the useful part is the history.

Individual game sections let visitors inspect records by date, see recent improvements, rank players, and look at the longest-lasting records. The SNES archive reaches back into 1991 and 1992, when record evidence often came from Japanese publications rather than YouTube uploads or emulator files.

That creates an unusual preservation problem.

Modern competitive gaming expects proof. Old competitive gaming often left a number in a magazine.

The site keeps both.

A leaderboard with sediment layers

The SNES section records performances that lasted for years because nobody had a centralized global mechanism for continuously challenging them.

Some old entries include approximate dates because the surviving source identified a month but not a precise day. Later records become more exact. Eventually video links appear. The evidence changes as the Internet changes.

That makes the database more than a list of fast times.

It documents the transition from local and magazine-based competition into the modern speedrunning environment, where players from different countries can upload attempts, compare techniques immediately, and shave hundredths of a second from runs that have already been optimized for decades.

The site is still active. Records from 2026 sit beside performances attributed to players in the early 1990s. On some tracks, historical records held for thousands of days before being replaced.

Those long reigns are almost impossible to appreciate from a current leaderboard alone. Once a new number takes the top row, the old achievement vanishes unless somebody deliberately retains the sequence.

F-Zero World Record History does.

That matters particularly for games with long competitive lives. A record is not just a time. It is a relationship between a player, the techniques known at that moment, the hardware and regional version being used, and every previous attempt that established what people thought the limit was.

Ancient Web: The NES Color Problem

If you have ever argued that an NES emulator’s colors look wrong, congratulations: you have stepped into a problem large enough for somebody to spend years measuring, capturing, comparing and rebuilding palettes for it.

The annoying part is that there is no single tidy RGB palette hiding inside the original NTSC Nintendo Entertainment System. The NES PPU produces composite video rather than a native RGB color space, and the final picture depends on how a television decodes that signal.

Different CRTs can therefore make the same console look different. Once emulators, digital displays and RGB modifications enter the picture, the simple question “what are the real NES colors?” turns into a swamp.

FirebrandX walked into the swamp on purpose.

From eyeballing to captures

The project describes several generations of work: early palettes adjusted by eye, direct captures from composite output, hybrid approaches and reverse-engineered palettes.

One palette, “Composite Direct,” preserves an unmodified capture of the front-loading NTSC NES output. Another reproduces colors from the NES Classic. The “PVM Style D93” palette was built by comparing a Sony PVM CRT against a digital display and adjusting colors to make the two behave as similarly as possible.

FirebrandX says more than 30 hours went into that PVM palette alone, including sampling games across the NES library and repeatedly comparing synchronized game output on the CRT and LCD.

That is the kind of sentence that separates preservation work from “looks close enough to me.”

The page also includes downloadable palette files, firmware packages for NESRGB boards and practical notes about flashing hardware. It is research that can actually be used.

Why a page like this matters

Old game hardware is full of details that disappear when preservation stops at ROM files. Video output, display behavior, controllers, timing, audio circuitry and even the ugly characteristics of consumer televisions were part of the experience.

This page preserves one argument in unusual depth: what color was the NES actually showing us?

For emulator developers and retro-hardware people, the answer is useful. For everybody else, it is a nice example of how one apparently tiny compatibility problem can contain years of engineering work.
