Reviews before every opinion had a score widget

The important part is the voice.

The site explains that it was originally hosted through GameSpy’s StrategyPlanet as part of RCTUK and was later moved after that server disappeared.

What survived is not a conventional fan site. It is documentation for people who wanted to understand the games underneath the interface.

When curiosity reaches the file format

Ancient Web: HyperPhysics Turned HyperCard Into a 1998 Web of Physics Concepts

HyperPhysics feels less like a textbook website than somebody cut a physics course into index cards and connected every useful edge with string.

Created by Rod Nave at Georgia State University, the project grew out of HyperCard teaching material and was substantially converted to HTML by late 1998. The resulting site kept the card-sized approach: compact explanations connected through dense concept maps rather than long chapters.

The subjects range across mechanics, electricity and magnetism, sound and hearing, optics and vision, heat, matter, nuclear physics, relativity, quantum physics, astronomy, and related mathematics.

It is enormous without looking enormous.

Hypertext used as an actual teaching idea

The key design choice is the linking.

That makes HyperPhysics a particularly literal implementation of hypertext.

The web is not just delivering pages. The connections between concepts are part of the lesson.

Nave’s retrospective material says the project had been hosted from his office beginning in 1998 before eventually moving onto Georgia State infrastructure in 2016. He also described traffic on the order of millions of document hits per day during one measured period, evidence that a hand-built educational resource could become serious reference infrastructure without turning into a commercial platform.

Another old-web virtue is stability. HyperPhysics built up thousands of incoming links because its paths stayed useful. Teachers could reference a specific concept rather than send students to a constantly rearranging homepage.

The visual design is unmistakably old, but that is almost beside the point. The site works because its information architecture matches the subject: physics is a network of relationships, so the pages are a network of relationships.

Its submission pages describe a collection of original material inspired by Tolkien and contributed by members of that fan-club world. The archive includes poetry, fan fiction, essays, journals, parodies, songs, drabbles, recipes, Middle-earth reference material, and the deeply Internet-native category of Top Ten lists.

The site keeps the material family-friendly and identifies its volunteer maintainers as Amy and Jeff Buckles, known in the community as Primula and TrebleMaker.

Fandom after the host moves on

This is an important distinction in web preservation.

An official site documents what a company wanted to publish. A fan archive documents what the audience did with it.

The old LOTR community was not just reading announcements. People were writing stories, poems, jokes, commentary, recipes, and personal reflections. Those contributions formed a culture around the official product, but the culture itself belonged to thousands of individual participants.

Once the original club became defunct, a volunteer scrapbook became a practical preservation system.

The structure is simple because the job is simple: keep the work findable.

There are categories, contributor names, submission instructions, and long indexes rather than an algorithmic feed. A visitor can move sideways through a community’s interests instead of seeing only what happened to be popular during one week twenty years ago.

Long before every browser wanted hardware-accelerated 3D, Flatland proposed a wonderfully web-native solution: describe a virtual place in a text file and let a plug-in turn it into somewhere you could walk.

3DML—3D Markup Language—borrowed the basic mental model of HTML. Authors wrote structured text, assembled reusable objects, and published the result as an Internet-ready 3D environment called a SPOT.

Flatland’s Rover software handled the viewing.

The surviving tutorial targets Rover 1.5.1 and Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows NT. It even recommends that beginners work in Notepad.

This was 3D publishing before the toolchain became an industry.

The world was an ASCII grid

A 3DML file used recognizable markup such as <SPOT>, <HEAD>, <BODY>, <MAP>, and <LEVEL>.

The map itself could be laid out as characters in a grid. Individual symbols referred to blocks occupying standardized 256-by-256-by-256 units, so the author could construct rooms and landscapes almost like drawing a level with letters.

The format was not limited to silent geometry. Tutorial material describes text, two-dimensional graphics, sound, animations, and streaming video as things that could be incorporated into a SPOT.

That makes 3DML interesting for reasons beyond nostalgia.

The project treated a 3D world as a document.

You could inspect its source, understand its pieces, reuse blocks, edit it in ordinary text software, and publish it through the same general infrastructure as a webpage. Flatland even supplied the familiar ecosystem of old-web badges: “Powered by 3DML,” “Download Flatland Rover,” and directories pointing visitors toward other worlds.

The idea did not become the dominant web architecture. Browser standards moved elsewhere, plug-ins aged badly, and modern 3D engines became much more capable.

But the abandoned branch is historically useful precisely because it shows another plausible answer to the question: what should a website become once it has depth?

A researcher’s web shelf

Marc J. Zeitlin’s unofficial Cozy web pages preserve a community around the Cozy line of composite homebuilt aircraft, with roots online going back to 1995. The site’s mailing-list history says notices went out in April 1995, and the resulting list became a place where prospective builders, active builders, and experienced pilots could exchange information directly.

The archive has grown into much more than a discussion list.

Building knowledge one airplane at a time

The site collects reference material, newsletters, performance information, builder pages, suppliers, technical discussions, photographs, accident reports, and mailing-list documentation. Its 2024 mailing-list page reports 719 members spread across many countries, ranging from people still considering a project to pilots with more than a thousand hours in their aircraft.

Ancient Web: The Halifax Computer Club Kept Meeting on the Community Web

Before every local group had a Facebook page, a computer club could have something better: its own strange little section of a community network.

The Halifax Computer Club lives within the Chebucto Community Net, a Nova Scotia community-network project that says it has been serving local online needs since 1994.

The club pages preserve the ordinary life of people meeting to show one another computers, software, games, operating systems, and whatever somebody had figured out that month.

Surviving pages document presentations and game nights rather than attempting to retell the history of computing from above.

Computer history is usually remembered through products and companies.
