Ancient Web: Gordon Novak’s Homepage Preserves an Era When AI Meant Lisp, Physics and Building the Damn Thing

For article #1000, it seems appropriate to end on a site where the web still behaves like a filing cabinet full of actual work. Gordon S. Novak Jr.’s University of Texas at Austin homepage preserves decades of artificial-intelligence research, Lisp code, course notes, papers and experiments without trying to turn any of it into a personal brand.

Novak’s research career reaches back into an AI world that looks very different from the current one. His interests include automatic programming, physics problem solving, compilers, software reuse and Lisp. He directed UT Austin’s Artificial Intelligence Laboratory from 1984 to 1999 and developed systems aimed at getting computers to reason about programs and physical problems rather than merely execute hand-written procedures.

One of the recurring ideas is wonderfully ambitious: describe a problem at a higher level and make the machine generate the program. Novak’s work on GLISP explored a Lisp-based language with data abstraction. Other systems worked on specializing generic procedures for particular data structures, generating scientific programs from diagrams and solving physics problems stated in ordinary English.

That last goal is especially fun to encounter in an old academic web directory now that natural-language AI is fashionable again. Decades before today’s chat interfaces, researchers were already asking how a computer could interpret a written physics problem, extract the relevant quantities and relationships, and produce a solution.

The site is not merely a publication list. It keeps teaching material alive. Course pages for algorithms, data structures, symbolic programming and artificial intelligence include syllabi, notes, examples and old software references. One algorithms course casually moves from Big O and trees into Lisp, rewrite rules and MapReduce. Another set of AI notes is still directly readable as plain academic HTML.

Novak also released software through the old mechanisms that made university computing pages so useful: downloadable packages, FTP archives and web demonstrations. His CV records tools for unit conversion, Scheme tutoring, Common Lisp/X Windows interfaces, expert systems and teaching software distributed to other faculty.

There is no clean boundary here between research archive, classroom, software repository and personal homepage. That is precisely why it belongs in this project.

The Ancient Web was never only dancing GIFs and abandoned fan pages. It was also professors putting decades of knowledge directly on public servers because that was the obvious thing to do.

Ancient Web: UTEP’s Master List of Logical Fallacies Became a Durable Map of Bad Arguments

The web has never suffered from a shortage of bad arguments. One old university page tried to name as many of them as possible. Owen M. Williamson’s Master List of Logical Fallacies at the University of Texas at El Paso became the sort of reference page that escaped its course and started circulating everywhere.

The page treats fallacies as deceptive or defective arguments that can sound persuasive while proving little. Its catalog extends well beyond the handful everybody remembers from school. Alongside ad hominem, circular reasoning and bandwagon arguments are contemporary rhetorical habits, overlapping categories and named patterns useful for asking what an argument is actually doing.

Williamson’s list has been cited by university teaching resources, critical-thinking courses and later reference works. Copies and mirrors also survive around the web, which is usually what happens when a useful university page becomes unofficial infrastructure.

The page is valuable precisely because it is not a magic argument-winning machine. Naming a fallacy does not automatically refute somebody. Two categories can overlap. Context matters. A claim that resembles a fallacy may still have relevant evidence behind it. And accusing another person of “a fallacy” can itself become a cheap substitute for addressing the substance.

Used properly, the list is a diagnostic vocabulary.

That makes it particularly suited to the web, where argument arrives detached from tone, context and sometimes even authorship. Being able to identify when somebody attacks a speaker instead of the claim, appeals to popularity as evidence, changes the subject or builds a circular justification is basic information hygiene.

The old university-page format helps too. It is one long reference object rather than a slideshow that gives every fallacy its own ad impression. Search the page, compare definitions, follow related concepts, leave.

Its continued citation years after the original course context is a small example of why publicly accessible academic pages mattered. A professor’s teaching handout could become a resource for the whole Internet without anybody turning it into a product.

Ancient Web: The Cosmic Encounter Archive Helped Fans Rebuild a Board Game From Files and Memory

Physical games can become software preservation problems in disguise. Lose the cards, rules and expansion sheets, and suddenly the thing you own is incomplete. The old Cosmic Encounter archive at Boston University helped fans fight exactly that problem.

The pages associated with Aaron Fuegi preserved material around the classic Eon-era Cosmic Encounter: rules, expansion information and files that fans could use to understand or recreate components. A 2001 Usenet post about constructing a homemade expanded Eon set specifically points to Fuegi’s mirror of the old archive for PostScript files used to print cards, powers and hexes, along with Expansion Set 9 rules.

That is a remarkable little preservation loop. A board game released as cardboard becomes scarce. Fans digitize pieces and rules. Another fan uses those files to reconstruct a playable physical set. The web becomes the bridge that sends the game back into matter.

Cosmic Encounter is particularly suited to this kind of obsession because its identity is tied to asymmetry. Players receive alien powers that deliberately break the normal rules in different ways. Expansions therefore are not merely more of the same; missing powers and components can materially change the available game.

The archive also preserves the social infrastructure around that reconstruction. Old guestbook entries show visitors reaching the Cosmic Encounter pages alongside other sections of Fuegi’s personal web space. This was not a dedicated commercial database. It was one branch of somebody’s homepage that happened to become useful to a game community.

Copyright questions always matter with scanned and printable game components, and surviving fan archives should be understood in that context. Their historical value, however, is clear: they record rules, expansion structures and the practical knowledge fans used when original material was difficult to obtain.

Modern reissues can bring an old game back to market, but they do not erase the history of earlier editions. Components change. Wording changes. Art changes. Sometimes entire systems change.

Ancient Web: ARRT’s ARRCHIVES Is a Giant Hand-Built Museum of the Long Island Rail Road

Some websites are archives because they contain old material. ARRT’s ARRCHIVES is an archive because it behaves like one: acquire another timetable, correct the caption, add the map, argue over the date of a siding, repeat for years.

Created by Arthur John Huneke, the site describes itself as an online museum of Long Island Rail Road history and a gallery of railroad photographs. Its scope is enormous. Branch histories sit beside tickets, passes, employee timetables, track diagrams, station photographs, newspaper clippings, signal information, postal history and material on related Long Island transportation systems.

The chronological history reaches back to the Brooklyn and Jamaica Rail Road and the formation of the Long Island Rail Road in the 1830s. From there the site branches—appropriately—into the messy corporate and physical history of individual lines, extensions, stations and abandoned routes.

The Wading River material shows the site’s method especially well. Historical photographs are compared against track plans and later views. Contributors point out errors, and the page records the correction instead of silently pretending it was always right. One discussion uses a SUNY map and track changes to narrow the date of a photograph that initially looked older.

That is excellent amateur historiography. The object is not to look authoritative. The object is to get closer to the answer.

The site is dedicated in part to railroad historians William D. Slade and Robert M. Emery, and it clearly belongs to a chain of preservation rather than a single author working in isolation. Photos, maps and corrections arrive from other researchers, then become part of the public reference.

The visual design is maximal old web: huge pages, capital letters, images everywhere and links that keep opening new historical tunnels. A modern information architect would probably break it into a database. Doing so might improve search while losing some of the feeling that you are rummaging through somebody’s railroad room.

Ancient Web: Leigh Brasington’s Website Is What Happens When a Personal Site Never Stops Growing

Most personal websites eventually freeze, vanish or get replaced by a profile. Leigh Brasington’s site chose a fourth option: keep growing for decades until the sitemap looks like somebody’s brain escaped into HTML.

Brasington is a meditation teacher who has practiced since 1985, studied closely with Ayya Khema, began assisting her in 1994 and has led retreats since 1997. His site contains extensive Buddhist material on jhanas, suttas, dependent origination, meditation practice, translations, retreat schedules and several books.

If that were all it contained, it would already be substantial. It is nowhere near all it contains.

The sitemap also wanders into computer security, Windows versions, freeware, calendars, a Chevy Bolt, the Monty Hall problem, environmental material, economic graphs, travel, politics, photographs, autobiographical timelines, old computers and technical odds and ends accumulated over years.

The update log proves this is not a preserved corpse. In 2026 the site was still receiving frequent revisions, including meditation resources, Pali translation notes, reading lists, study guides, security pages and the site’s own enormous sitemap.

That continuity is what makes it unusual. Brasington had a GeoCities presence and explicitly told visitors not to bookmark it when GeoCities was closing, pointing them toward the independent domain instead. The content moved, but the personal-web model survived.

There is also a spectacular anti-advertising page. After receiving requests to place ads, Brasington posted rates in the billions of dollars per impression and effectively told advertisers to go away if they disliked the price. It may be the most efficient ad policy ever written.

The site’s value is not that every opinion on it is authoritative. It is that one person has kept a huge body of teaching, software, observations and personal history directly addressable on the open web instead of breaking it into posts controlled by several different companies.

Ancient Web: Apemania Took Planet of the Apes Makeup Extremely Seriously

There is fandom, and then there is putting hours of professional prosthetic work into becoming an ape correctly. Apemania belongs firmly to the second category.

The group traces its influences through Planet of the Apes, Rick Baker’s work, King Kong, Star Wars and the practical-effects culture surrounding screen makeup. Members had experimented with makeup, props, costumes and performance as far back as the late 1970s, then later reconnected around events including makeup artist John Chambers’ 75th birthday in 1997.

Chambers is central to the story because his prosthetic work helped define the original Planet of the Apes films. Re-creating those characters is not a matter of buying a rubber mask. The illusion depends on sculpting, appliances, hair work, coloration, costume, facial movement and performance.

Apemania’s participants include people with real effects-industry experience. Brian Penikas, associated with the group as its “Keeper of the Glue and Faith,” built a professional career in makeup effects and worked on major film productions. That expertise gives the fan work a strange and wonderful overlap with the industry it celebrates.

The site preserves photos, character recreations, group history and material around replica masks and costumes. Old fan discussions also point back to Apemania when people are trying to identify high-quality ape makeup or understand how specific looks were achieved.

This is exactly the kind of specialized knowledge social media handles badly. A spectacular finished photograph gets attention, while the historical references, names, techniques and long-term group context disappear between posts.

The old website keeps the obsession organized.

It also complicates the line between fan and professional. Practical-effects culture has always depended on people who started by loving a creature enough to figure out how it was made. Sometimes the fan archive is also a craft archive.

Ancient Web: Daemonen Built a Hand-Made Lexicon of Demons, Monsters and Folklore

The old web loved dictionaries of things respectable encyclopedias considered too strange, narrow or embarrassing to organize. Daemonen is a German-language example: a hand-built lexicon of demons, monsters and supernatural beings pulled from multiple traditions.

Surviving references to the site preserve entries for figures as different as Typhon from Greek mythology, Rahu from South Asian cosmology, the German Nachzehrer, leprechauns and demons appearing in later occult literature. A scholarly folklore discussion specifically pointed to thematic web pages like this as surprisingly substantial examples of online mythological reference work.

The category boundaries are messy, which is exactly why the site is interesting. “Demon” can mean a being from a religious tradition, a folkloric monster, a literary invention, an occult classification or simply something a compiler placed in the same alphabetical drawer.

That means the site must be read critically. A Rahu entry should not be treated as interchangeable with a European vampire legend. Greek mythology, Hindu traditions, regional folk belief and ceremonial-magic texts come from different histories and communities. An old web lexicon can flatten those differences if the reader does not put them back.

But as a map of supernatural vocabulary, it is extremely useful. Obscure names lead outward to ethnographies, religious texts, folklore collections and historical dictionaries. Even questionable summaries can tell researchers which spellings and associations were circulating online at the time.

The frames-based design is another period marker. Large reference sites once used frames to keep alphabetical navigation visible while the main content changed beside it. Modern browsers can make that structure feel awkward, but it was an efficient way to build a homemade encyclopedia without a database-backed content system.

The web is now full of automatically generated mythology pages that repeat each other. Daemonen represents an older model: somebody chose the entries, wrote or compiled descriptions and built the navigation by hand.

Browse the Daemonen lexicon as a historical index, not a theological authority. The weird web is most useful when it sends you toward better sources instead of pretending it is the final one.

Ancient Web: Trenches on the Web Put World War I Casualty Figures Into a Table People Kept Citing

A good historical table can travel farther than the website that made it. The Trenches on the Web World War I casualty page is a case in point: a compact country-by-country table that has been cited and copied for years.

The page organizes wartime numbers into categories such as troops mobilized, deaths, wounded, and missing or prisoners. The Russian figures, for example, have often been reproduced from the table with roughly 12 million mobilized, 1.7 million dead, 4.95 million wounded and 2.5 million missing or captured.

The attraction is obvious. World War I statistics are enormous, and a table lets a reader compare countries without digging through a shelf of demographic studies.

The danger is equally obvious: casualty numbers are not perfectly settled facts.

Different sources use different definitions. Some count only military deaths; others include deaths from wounds or disease differently. Missing soldiers may later be reclassified. Prisoners overlap with categories in some datasets. Borders and successor states complicate national totals. Civilian losses are a separate nightmare.

That does not make an old reference table useless. It tells you how to use it. Treat the page as a fast comparative index and a clue to the figures circulating in historical literature, then check important numbers against modern scholarship and primary statistical sources.

The page’s long afterlife is itself worth noticing. Teachers, forum discussions, research papers and other history sites have linked back to it because simple, readable reference pages were one of the old web’s greatest strengths. Somebody did the clerical work once, and thousands of later readers benefited.

Today, the same query often produces automated snippets with no visible methodology. The old table is at least inspectable as a whole. You can see which columns exist and where ambiguity might enter.

Ancient Web: The 90th ID Preservation Group Digitized the Tiny Details of a WWII Division

A military unit can disappear into a paragraph surprisingly fast. The 90th Infantry Division Preservation Group goes the other direction: preserve enough detail that the division becomes a world of documents again.

The site’s research section actively solicits regimental, battalion and company histories from veterans, families and historians, including material for infantry, artillery, engineer, medical, tank, tank-destroyer, signal and support units connected with the WWII 90th Infantry Division, the “T-O” Division.

The archive is valuable because it reaches below campaign summaries. Material associated with the group includes scanned wartime regulations, field manuals, equipment specifications and original documents. Their scans have been cited elsewhere for items such as Army regulations and field manuals. One particularly good example is an original K-ration specification made available from a Quartermaster Museum source.

The site also publishes research that would sound absurdly narrow until you need it. A paper on WWII GI eyeglasses digs into the frames and supply details behind a piece of equipment most military histories would never mention.

That is preservation doing its real job. History is not only generals and battles. It is what soldiers wore, ate, carried, read, repaired and were issued by a quartermaster who had to fill out paperwork for everything.

Independent preservation groups are especially useful because they often bridge collectors, reenactors, veterans’ families and formal archives. A collector may recognize an object. A family may have the photograph. A museum may hold the specification sheet. The web page can bring those pieces together.

There is also an important difference between reproduction and interpretation. Scanning a regulation lets future researchers inspect the source rather than relying entirely on somebody’s summary of what it supposedly said.

The site is not a substitute for the National Archives or official unit histories, but that is not what makes it powerful. It is an index into details that larger archives can be painfully difficult to discover.

Ancient Web: BunkerTours Crawled Through the Maginot Line So the Rest of Us Could Study It

Military fortifications are terrible subjects for purely desk-bound history. Plans matter, but eventually somebody has to go look at the concrete. BunkerTours is the kind of old enthusiast site built by people willing to do that part.

Pages associated with Dan McKenzie document French Maginot Line positions and individual ouvrages through field visits, photographs and site-specific notes. Later reference pages have cited BunkerTours material for locations including Soetrich, Latiremont, Sentzich and Bréhain.

That is important because the Maginot Line is not one wall. It is a dispersed system of fortifications, artillery works, infantry positions, underground galleries, entrances, observation structures and supporting sites spread across a large landscape. Popular summaries flatten it into a historical punchline. Field documentation puts the machinery back in view.

A photograph of a surviving entrance, turret position or interior passage can answer questions a map cannot. It shows condition, alterations, vegetation, postwar reuse and what remains physically accessible. When images are paired with period terminology, researchers can begin matching modern ruins to wartime structures.

The site also belongs to a wider tradition of bunker exploration on the old web. Before high-resolution social feeds, enthusiasts returned from trips and built permanent pages: one fortification, one gallery, one explanation at a time. Those pages were ugly sometimes, but they were citable. A photograph did not vanish down a timeline after forty-eight hours.

There are obvious cautions. Fortifications can be unstable, contaminated, flooded, legally restricted or simply dangerous. An old exploration page is historical documentation, not permission or a current safety guide. Site conditions and access rules change.

For historians, though, the value remains. A personal field archive can preserve views that no longer exist because entrances were sealed, vegetation changed, equipment was removed or vandalism took its toll.

That makes BunkerTours more than military tourism. It is a record of the record: surviving twentieth-century defenses photographed during a particular phase of their decay and preservation.
