Ancient Web: 440 International Kept Radio People and Radio History Searchable

Before LinkedIn, Facebook, searchable station databases, and a thousand talent directories, radio people had 440 International.

The surviving homepage is almost aggressively compact. It links to “440: Satisfaction,” a where-are-they-now directory; “Those Were the Days,” a daily history feature; favorite radio stories; links; buttons; and background material on the site. There is very little modern furniture around it. The content is the interface.

A 1996 trade-magazine article about 440 gives useful context for what the site was doing when the commercial Web was still young. It described a service built around radio-industry people, station histories, links, and a “Those Were the Days” feature. The name itself came out of radio culture: the article explains that Rolling Stones’ “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” had been record number 440 at a station, and the number stuck.

The “Those Were the Days” pages are still scattered across the site. Pick a date and you can fall into short pieces about broadcasting anniversaries, popular music, television, performers, technology, and general history. One surviving page marks the beginning of commercial FM broadcasting in 1941. Others range much farther outside radio while retaining the voice of a broadcast-ready calendar feature.

The site was useful enough that later U.S. Census Bureau “Profile America” pieces cited 440 International’s calendar material as a source. That does not make every old trivia item sacred scripture, but it shows the site had become part of the information ecosystem well beyond its original radio audience.

The more historically interesting piece is the people directory. Radio careers are unusually difficult to trace because call signs change, stations change formats and owners, on-air names differ from legal names, and talent moves between markets. A specialist directory created by people who understood that world filled a real gap. It preserved the connective tissue around broadcasting that conventional histories often ignore.

The design is also a snapshot of how an industry directory worked before profiles became platform accounts. You did not “build your personal brand” inside 440. You looked people up, followed links, read stories, and moved on with your life.

That makes the site useful to researchers now. It preserves names, old station associations, links, media-history writing, and the vocabulary of radio culture in the period when the industry was first becoming searchable on the Web.

Ancient Web: K3PGP’s Experimenter’s Corner Runs From VLF to Light

K3PGP’s Experimenter’s Corner looks like what happens when a workbench gets enough disk space to become a website.

The site’s own slogan is “From VLF to Light,” and it earns the phrase. Its sections wander through astronomy, bicycle-mounted cameras, construction projects, lasers, moonbounce, software, radio experiments, test equipment, repair notes, and assorted technical material accumulated over years.

The pages identify the material as copyright 1995–2020 and warn that some of it may no longer be current. That warning is useful rather than embarrassing. The value of the archive is partly that it preserves how an experimenter actually worked through technologies that changed underneath him.

A laboratory with hyperlinks

The software section alone is a small museum of weak-signal computing. It includes material for PSK31, moon tracking, DSP experiments, helical-filter design, sound-over-IP, and visual radio modes. One PSK31 page targets Windows 3.1, Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows NT with SoundBlaster-compatible audio hardware.

That operating-system list dates the problem better than any redesign could.

Elsewhere the site crosses from radio into optics. Laser pages document experiments involving laser moonbounce, cloud bounce, laser radar, and an AO-40 laser experiment. Other sections preserve VLF work, telescope and eclipse material, old test-equipment repair, and even snapshots of projects such as SETI@home.

What ties it together is not a subject category. It is the experimenter’s habit of documenting the thing that was on the bench that week.

Modern technical publishing tends to split those interests into separate channels: amateur radio here, astronomy there, optics somewhere else, software on a code host. K3PGP leaves the connections visible. A receiver problem can lead into DSP. Astronomy can lead into moonbounce. A laser can become another communications path.

Tetsuo Kogawa’s transmitter page begins with a question that explains the entire project: why make transmission technology less esoteric?

His answer is basically that radio has interesting possibilities for art.

The page then gets extremely practical.

It includes a simple FM transmitter, component lists, basic tools, step-by-step pictorial instructions, tuning FAQs, antenna information, power-supply notes, TV transmitter designs, and more advanced one-to-three-watt FM material that explicitly warns builders not to proceed without a power meter and frequency counter.

Some schematics are offered as PDF, JPG, symbolic diagrams, and even VRML.

That last format alone dates the web neighborhood nicely.

A workshop that became an archive

The most useful part of the site is that it does not separate electronics from its cultural history.

Kogawa links the technical material to a chronology of transmitter workshops. The page points to an earlier private workshop on June 3, 1990, a first public workshop on April 28, 1991, and a first U.S. workshop at Paper Tiger Television on November 4, 1991.

Video survives alongside the circuit diagrams.

That gives the page a different character from a generic electronics tutorial. The transmitter is not presented merely as a gadget. It is part of a practice: build the device, understand enough radio to operate it, then use transmission as a creative medium.

The page’s construction also belongs to the old technical web. It assumes the visitor is willing to follow diagrams, read theory, acquire tools, solder components, troubleshoot, and learn from linked documents rather than watch a single polished video.

Ancient Web: JProc Preserves the Strange History of TEMPEST

Computers can leak secrets without sending a packet.

The page collects material about compromising emanations: unintended electromagnetic or acoustic signals from information-processing equipment that can reveal what the machine is doing.

The history is wonderfully strange.

A declassified NSA account traces the problem back to World War II, when Bell Telephone engineers discovered that encrypted teletype equipment was radiating patterns correlated with the plaintext being processed. In a demonstration across the street from a Signal Corps crypto center, engineers were reportedly able to reconstruct much of the message from the leaked signal.

The machine was secure. The room was talking.

That is the conceptual punch of TEMPEST.

A cryptographic system can be mathematically strong while the hardware implementing it leaks information through a completely different channel.

The page follows the subject through Cold War countermeasures, intelligence collection, shielding standards, and later public research into display emissions. It also points to Wim van Eck’s 1985 work showing that information from computer monitors could be reconstructed with comparatively inexpensive equipment.

The site is not itself a modern security standard or operational guide. Its value is historical: it connects wartime teletype equipment, classified shielding programs, declassified NSA material, Cold War espionage, and the eventual public understanding that electronic devices radiate more than engineers intend.

That history matters because side-channel attacks are now a normal security concept. Timing, power use, sound, electromagnetic emissions, and other physical behavior can all betray information even when the cryptography is sound.

Old pages like this preserve how surprising that idea once seemed.

A lot of modern hobby sites are really storefronts with three blog posts attached. Noji’s ham-radio pages feel more like somebody kept expanding a personal binder until it became useful to strangers.

The section is built around amateur radio as a working hobby rather than a lifestyle brand. There are pages for people who have not taken the license test yet, pages for people who just received a call sign, and pages for operators who want specific information about frequencies, repeaters, nets, contesting, equipment and operating practice.

The structure is old-web practical. A visitor can move through a glossary, licensing information, study material, antenna basics, emergency communications, clubs, public-service resources and contact lists without being forced through a tutorial funnel.

A website that behaves like an Elmer

Ham-radio operators traditionally use the word “Elmer” for an experienced operator who helps a newcomer learn the ropes.

Noji’s site effectively tries to do that in HTML.

The new-ham material acknowledges a problem every specialist hobby has: beginners often do not know enough yet to know what questions to ask. Instead of hiding that complexity, the site exposes it through linked explanations and practical references.

There are also pages for scheduled nets, contest calendars, educational resources and regulatory material. Some entries are highly local; others are useful anywhere. That mixture is exactly what personal reference sites do well. They do not need every page to serve the same audience.

The result is not visually fashionable, but it is dense with named things: modes, bands, call signs, organizations, contest names, technical terms and equipment categories. Search engines understand specificity, and humans do too.

Phil’s Old Radios says it launched in 1995, which means the website itself is now old enough to qualify for the sort of careful restoration work it documents.

Philip I. Nelson built the site around antique radios, televisions, and the work required to bring old sets back to life. It includes a large gallery, restoration articles, beginner material, book and magazine recommendations, parts sources, and special features about radio collecting.

The useful part is that the site does not merely show polished pictures of finished hardware.

It explains the work.

Repair knowledge that survives with the machines

Old electronics are a problem for preservation because keeping the physical object is only half the job. Capacitors fail. Insulation deteriorates. Tubes become harder to source. Previous owners make repairs ranging from clever to criminal.

A restoration article captures decisions that a photograph cannot.

That gives Phil’s Old Radios value beyond nostalgia. Somebody approaching an unfamiliar set can learn what to inspect, where to find parts, and what other collectors have already discovered. The beginner section even covers basics such as finding, pricing, testing, and repairing vintage sets.

The website is also a useful example for modern webmasters. Its information architecture is obvious from the front page: Gallery, Beginners, Information, Restoration, Features, Building, Sitemap, Contact, About, News.

No archaeological excavation of the navigation is required before beginning the archaeological excavation of the radios.

The homepage identifies the site as one of the earliest websites devoted to antique radios and TVs and carries a copyright range beginning in 1995. Three decades later, the basic purpose has not changed much. It exists to document a subject and help people who care about it.

That kind of continuity is part of what Ancient Web is looking for.
