Ancient Web: Grant Searle Rebuilt a 1974 Pong Machine Without a Microprocessor

Before a home videogame could be a small computer, it could also be a pile of logic chips whose entire job was to make two paddles, one ball, and a score appear on a television. Grant Searle’s Tele-Tennis page documents his reconstruction of exactly that sort of machine: a 1974 Practical Wireless project built without a microprocessor and without a line of software.

The original design was published as a series by M. J. Hughes in Practical Wireless from July through November 1974. It belonged to the first wave of Pong-like home television games, when duplicating the basic idea meant constructing the video system itself. The magazine supplied circuit diagrams, component information, board layouts, and enough explanation for a sufficiently determined reader to build one at home.

Searle finally did that decades later.

The interesting part is what is not inside. There is no CPU running a game loop and no ROM containing game code. The machine builds its behavior directly from electronics: 7400-series logic, 555 timers, op-amps, diodes, counters, and separate circuits responsible for pieces of the picture. The paddles and ball are not sprites in memory. Their positions exist because the circuit generates the correct signals at the correct moments while the television image is being formed.

That makes the project useful far beyond nostalgia. A modern emulator can show what an early videogame looked like. This shows what one was at the electrical level.

Searle’s reconstruction also preserves the practical messiness that gets erased from neat histories of videogames. The original project occupied multiple boards. The 1970s design expected a UHF television connection. Searle adapted the output for a more convenient composite-video setup and put his build in an appropriately period-looking case. It is less a replica of a commercial Pong console than a reconstruction of the era when electronics magazines expected readers to manufacture their own entertainment.

For a webmaster, there is another preservation lesson here. The page is valuable because one person documented a completed build, not because somebody later summarized that such projects existed. Photographs, construction notes, scans, and firsthand decisions turn an old circuit into something another person can understand and reproduce.

Ancient Web: Nintendo’s Super Mario 64 Page Admitted the Web Could Not Explain 3D Mario

Nintendo’s old Super Mario 64 page contains one of the most charming problems in early game marketing: how do you sell a revolutionary 3D game through a Web page that can barely move?

The Japanese page introduces the game’s setup in the familiar way. Peach invites Mario to the castle with the promise of cake. Mario arrives, the castle is strangely empty, Bowser’s voice appears, and Mario eventually discovers that the paintings hanging inside the castle lead into entire worlds.

Then Nintendo has to explain why any of this is exciting.

The page calls the new adventure fundamentally different because it is full 3D action. It walks through Power Stars, painting worlds, Bowser’s takeover, and the basic structure that would become instantly familiar to anyone who played the game.

But the most interesting part comes later.

Nintendo essentially apologizes for the limitations of the medium.

The page says that the feeling of this new Mario cannot really be communicated over the Internet and that the pleasure of full 3D action has to be experienced by actually playing the game.

That is a perfect 1996 sentence.

The Web was trying to advertise something it could not yet reproduce

Today a game page would autoplay trailers, stream high-resolution gameplay, embed interactive media, and probably ask permission to send notifications before you found the screenshots.

Nintendo’s page works with what it had.

It offers a series of highlight scenes visitors can click through: Mario fighting the Whomp King, the penguin slide, flying Mario, swimming, Metal Mario, and Mario versus Bowser. There is also a link promoting the original soundtrack CD.

The result is a static Web page trying to explain a game built around movement.

That mismatch makes the page historically useful. Super Mario 64 helped establish how 3D console movement and camera space could feel. The website preserves the marketing problem before streaming video made the solution obvious.

It is also remarkable simply because Nintendo still hosts the page. Large corporate websites are usually redesigned until the early layers disappear completely. Here, the old HTML remains reachable on Nintendo’s own domain, with its original small images, Japanese text, and period presentation intact.

Ancient Web: Ian Bell’s Homepage Kept Elite Close to Its Source Code

Most famous games eventually get museums built around them by fans. Elite had something better for years: one of its original programmers kept putting the evidence on his own homepage.

Ian Bell co-created Elite with David Braben for the BBC Micro, releasing the original game in 1984. The game became famous for combining space flight, combat, trading, and a huge procedurally generated universe inside hardware with almost comically small resources by modern standards.

Bell’s personal site became one of the most useful primary sources for understanding how that happened.

The old ClaraNet pages hosted Elite material, technical explanations, historical notes, downloadable versions, archival documents, and eventually program source. On the game’s fifteenth anniversary in November 1999, Bell released source material from the original program through the site.

That decision mattered far beyond nostalgia.

A programmer’s homepage became part of the historical record

When source code survives, historians and programmers can inspect what the machine actually did rather than reconstructing everything from screenshots and memory.

For Elite, that means looking directly at techniques behind its procedural universe, 3D graphics, data structures, and the extreme economies required by 1980s home computers.

Bell’s site also became a reference point for people writing ports, remakes, technical analyses, and emulator-era recreations. Discussions years later still pointed back to code and documentation hosted there when somebody wanted to know how the original generated planets or represented its universe.

That is a very old-Web kind of authority.

There was no official developer portal with a permanent preservation mandate. One of the creators simply had a homepage and used it to publish the material he thought should remain available.

The ClaraNet host has become unreliable in modern browsing, and some of the site’s material has migrated or been mirrored elsewhere. That instability is itself part of why the page matters. Personal hosting was never designed to become a forty-year archival institution, yet those home directories often ended up carrying irreplaceable technical history.

Elite is no longer obscure. Its influence on space games and open-world design is firmly established. What is easy to lose is the smaller layer beneath the famous story: the original files, programmer notes, old reviews, arguments, demonstrations, and source releases that let later readers inspect the artifact instead of merely admiring it.

Ancient Web: Flying Omelette Is a 1998 Gaming Site That Never Learned to Die

Flying Omelette is the kind of website that makes the phrase “personal gaming site” sound absurdly small.

The site traces its lineage back to a homepage era beginning in the late 1990s. One surviving site-history page places the creation of The NES Enshrined in January 1998 after an earlier personal homepage and a growing obsession with old game sites, MIDIs, reviews, and the scattered fan culture surrounding the NES.

What followed was not a clean publication plan.

It was accumulation.

FlyingOmelette.com grew into reviews, game oddities, music archives, character projects, hosted shrines, update logs, forums, rescued material from dead sites, reader mail, guides, and long-running arguments about obscure glitches that almost nobody outside a tiny community remembers.

That is exactly why it matters.

A website that kept its own sediment layers

The update logs are unusually valuable because they record the maintenance history of the site itself.

A 2009 entry describes archiving two older gaming websites after their free hosts deteriorated, repairing links where possible, recovering missing FAQs, and noting files that could no longer be found. Other entries document migrations between forum systems, broken RSS feeds, dead services, rediscovered passwords hidden in old games, and the slow disappearance of sites that once formed the surrounding neighborhood.

In other words, Flying Omelette did not merely survive old-Web attrition.

It documented some of the attrition while it happened.

A later retrospective from another retro-gaming site noted that Flying Omelette was still online more than twenty-five years after its beginnings and still contained reviews, guides, hosted shrines, music collections, and material from earlier gaming communities.

The site also preserves a very different model of games writing.

There is professional criticism in the world, and there is platform-driven content designed around whatever release is generating traffic this week.

Flying Omelette is neither.

A review might exist because the author remembers a bad Atari 2600 version of Pac-Man. A page may investigate one strange line in a game, one missing password, one soundtrack, or one weird localization choice because somebody cared enough to keep digging.

That kind of narrow attention is where fan archives become useful history.

They sound like somebody played a weird game too long and urgently needed the Internet to hear about it.

The archive ranges across NES obscurities, Neo Geo, Game Boy Advance, PlayStation 2, and assorted older games. Individual pages cover titles such as Dr. Chaos, Foton, Dash Galaxy in the Alien Asylum, Legacy of the Wizard, Abadox, and Metal Slug Advance.

Screenshots sit beside blunt observations about controls, level design, graphics, difficulty, bugs, and whatever ridiculous thing the game has just done.

Reviews before every opinion had a score widget

The important part is the voice.

Old personal game pages did not need to fit a publication template or serve a storefront funnel. A reviewer could spend half a page explaining one irritating room because that room was the reason the page existed.

Third Half’s writing is snarky, informal, occasionally profane, and willing to wander into side observations that a modern SEO brief would probably delete.

That makes it useful cultural evidence.

Video-game history is often reconstructed from release dates, magazine scores, sales figures, and polished retrospectives. Personal review archives preserve a different layer: how an ordinary player encountered the software at the time, what confused them, what made them laugh, and which design choices felt broken before later consensus settled in.

The screenshots matter too. They are not arranged as a comprehensive database. They are evidence chosen to support a complaint, joke, or explanation. That turns each page into a little argument rather than a catalog entry.

A site like this also shows how much personality the independent web tolerated. The author did not need a consistent brand voice across every game. The consistency was simply that the same person kept showing up.

Ancient Web: SegaSoft’s E3 1998 Photo Dump Caught the Trade Show Before Social Media

Before every trade show became a flood of livestreams, influencer clips, corporate recaps, and phone video, somebody from SegaSoft went to E3 with a camera and made a web page.

The result is still online.

The page says a group from SegaSoft attended E3 in 1998 and that the author took enough pictures to build a day-by-day record for people who could not be there. There are 103 images in total.

The archive begins before the show opens.

Setup is part of the history

The index separates the trip into setup days, a side trip to Six Flags, the three public E3 days, and the final breakdown. Dates run from May 24 through May 30, 1998.

That structure matters because polished event coverage usually starts when the doors open.

This page keeps the boxes.

It keeps the half-built booth, employee jokes, travel downtime, equipment problems, and the general mess around the presentation itself. The sample captions include lines like “Lots of HEAT.NET boxes” and “Lamont, does it work yet?”

Those are not historically important sentences by themselves.

Together with 103 photographs, they preserve the texture of a game-company trade-show appearance in a way a press release cannot.

SegaSoft itself is now a historical subject. The company was Sega’s PC and online-gaming arm in the 1990s, and HEAT.NET was part of its multiplayer push. A surviving employee photo dump therefore catches both a particular E3 and a company from a transitional period when PC networking, online services, and console culture were converging.

The page says it was last modified on December 3, 1998.

It still looks like it.

That is a compliment.

Ancient Web: The GHZ Sonic Museum Froze Two Decades of Hedgehog Games in Static HTML

The easiest way to forget twenty years of videogame history is to remember only the hits.

The GHZ Sonic Museum does the opposite. Its giant static index lists Sonic releases by year and by platform, starting in 1991 and running through 2010.

That means the familiar Mega Drive games sit beside things that are much easier to lose track of: Waku Waku Sonic Patrol Car, Sega Sonic Cosmo Fighter, Pico titles, Game Gear releases, Sonic’s Schoolhouse, N-Gage ports, Game.com versions, arcade games, mobile editions, and the strange side branches that never became franchise-defining landmarks.

A franchise before databases became normal

The page is basically a hand-built relational database expressed as links.

One section sorts by release year. Another reorganizes the same material by hardware: Mega Drive, Master System, Game Gear, Mega-CD, Pico, 32X, Saturn, Dreamcast, Neo Geo Pocket Color, Game Boy Advance, GameCube, PlayStation 2, Xbox, Nintendo DS, PSP, Wii, PC, mobile, and arcade.

That structure matters because videogame history is messy. One title can exist in several versions, regions, ports, compilations, and platforms. A chronological list answers one question. A hardware list answers another.

The museum also captures the web culture around the franchise. The footer dates the site’s written content and original graphics to 1997–2010 and identifies it plainly as an independent fan site rather than an official Sega property.

That distinction is part of the history. Before publishers built encyclopedic franchise wikis and searchable product databases, fans did the indexing themselves.

The result is useful now because obscure software often survives first as a name. Once somebody finds the exact title and platform, manuals, ROM discussions, screenshots, reviews, and preservation projects become much easier to locate.

Ancient Web: The Handheld Game Museum Never Threw Anything Away

Before a phone could emulate half the history of videogames, portable gaming meant dedicated plastic machines with one job and, frequently, a speaker capable of annoying an entire car.

Rik Morgan’s Handheld Game Museum catalogs those machines by manufacturer, with sections for Atari, Bandai, Casio, Coleco, Entex, Gakken, Mattel, Milton Bradley, Nintendo, Radio Shack, Tiger, Tomy, VTech, and a long tail of companies most people stopped thinking about decades ago.

The front page alone feels like an inventory sheet that escaped onto the Web.

That is a compliment.

The weird details matter

The site goes beyond photographs of game fronts. It has manuals, repair information, internal photographs under “Game Guts!”, books and magazines, rarities, prototypes, and even a section tracking handheld games that appeared in movies.

The update history reaches back through year-by-year pages to 2000. In 2017, Morgan wrote that he had sold his collection to the National Videogame Museum in Frisco, Texas, but the site remained online and continued receiving smaller updates. The homepage records additions as recently as September 2024.

That is a useful preservation story on its own.

A physical collection can change hands while the collector’s accumulated catalog stays public. The photos, model names, manuals, odd variants, and years of notes remain searchable instead of becoming a binder in somebody else’s building.

There is also a fossil from the older social Web sitting right on the homepage: the Handheld Web Ring. The page plainly notes that the ring no longer works and leaves it there “for nostalgia only.”

Correct decision.

For modern researchers, little leftovers like that matter. They show how independent sites used to connect themselves before feeds and recommendation algorithms became the default map of the Internet.
