Ancient Web: ConcordeSST Became a Living Technical Museum Before the Jets Retired

Most aircraft-history sites are built after the aircraft becomes history. ConcordeSST is more interesting because much of it was being assembled while Concorde was still operating, then kept growing through the fleet’s final years and retirement.

The site describes itself as an attempt to bring the Concorde story together in one place, and it takes that job literally. There are fleet pages, technical specifications, historical timelines, cockpit material, accident documentation, photographs, development history, airline information, and pages explaining where the surviving aircraft eventually ended up.

One of the best parts is the history section. It reaches back before passenger service and into the design problem itself: Britain and France agreeing in 1962 to develop a supersonic airliner, the choice of a slender delta wing, materials testing, wind-tunnel work, flight development, and the decision to stay around Mach 2 rather than chase the much hotter structural problems of Mach 3.

The site also preserves the kind of detail that tends to disappear when history gets compressed into a paragraph. Its early-development material discusses structural heat, aluminum-alloy limits, fatigue testing, hydraulic rigs, engine development, and the enormous ground-test equipment required to prove the aircraft. Concorde was a glamorous airplane, but this site spends plenty of time on the ugly machinery needed to make glamour survive certification.

The change log is a historical document in its own right. Entries from 2002 and 2003 track updates while the real aircraft were still in service: fleet hours, return-to-flight work, the retirement announcement, final tours, museum destinations, and the last flights. The page eventually starts recording aircraft status as “retired.” You can watch an enthusiast website cross the line from current-events reporting into preservation without anybody redesigning the site around that fact.

That is why ConcordeSST is useful in 2026. A modern article can summarize Concorde. This site preserves the layers: what enthusiasts were tracking before retirement, what was added while events were happening, and which technical questions mattered enough to earn their own pages.

For web archaeology, it is also a reminder that specialist sites often become archives accidentally. Somebody starts documenting the thing they care about. Twenty years later, the thing is gone and the website has become part of the evidence.

Ancient Web: Abandoned & Little-Known Airfields Maps Vanished Runways

An airport can disappear without vanishing completely. A runway becomes a road, a hangar becomes a warehouse, a subdivision eats the field, and fifty years later somebody notices the geometry from an aerial photograph.

Paul Freeman has been collecting those traces on the Web since April 1999.

The site says it now contains descriptions and images for more than 2,800 abandoned or little-known airfields across all fifty states, with additional coverage for places including Puerto Rico and western Pacific islands. Entries are built from aeronautical charts, airport directories, historic aerial photographs, topographic maps, contributed photographs, firsthand memories, and whatever other evidence can establish where a field was and what happened to it.

The result is less like an airport directory and more like forensic geography.

History written in runways

A typical entry may begin with the earliest map or aerial image Freeman has located, follow changes to runway layout or ownership, note when buildings appeared or disappeared, and continue until the field was abandoned, redeveloped, or reduced to faint traces visible from above.

Some sites were military fields. Others were municipal airports, private strips, industrial fields, emergency landing sites, or tiny local airports that mattered enormously to one community and almost nowhere else.

The archive is also unusually transparent about uncertainty.

An entry may say that little is known about a field’s original name or purpose. Another may distinguish between the earliest depiction located and the actual construction date. Missing photographs are described as missing rather than magically reconstructed into certainty.

That is good archival behavior.

Freeman describes the project as combining “history & mystery,” and the site invites readers to contribute dated photographs, charts, directories, and personal information that can expand individual entries.

That crowdsourced element is part of why a long-running specialist website can become more useful over time instead of less. Someone eventually finds the old airport directory in a box. Someone recognizes the runway from childhood. Somebody has the photograph no institution knew existed.

The site celebrated its twenty-fifth anniversary in 2024 and continues receiving revisions in 2026.

That is an impressive lifespan for any independent Web project, especially one whose raw material keeps disappearing under parking lots.

Building your own airplane is exactly the sort of hobby where a useful mailing list can matter more than a beautiful website.

Marc J. Zeitlin’s unofficial Cozy web pages preserve a community around the Cozy line of composite homebuilt aircraft, with roots online going back to 1995. The site’s mailing-list history says notices went out in April 1995, and the resulting list became a place where prospective builders, active builders, and experienced pilots could exchange information directly.

The archive has grown into much more than a discussion list.

Building knowledge one airplane at a time

The site collects reference material, newsletters, performance information, builder pages, suppliers, technical discussions, photographs, accident reports, and mailing-list documentation. Its 2024 mailing-list page reports 719 members spread across many countries, ranging from people still considering a project to pilots with more than a thousand hours in their aircraft.

That range matters.

Experimental aviation depends heavily on knowledge that does not fit neatly into a factory service manual. Builders need to know how other people solved layup problems, routed systems, interpreted plans, selected parts, handled modifications, and learned from failures.

A mailing list turns those isolated workshops into a distributed shop floor.

The web archive then gives that conversation a longer memory.

This is one of the recurring patterns of the early specialist web: a community does not begin by deciding to “build a platform.” Somebody makes pages. Somebody else runs a list. Useful documents accumulate. Photos and notes get linked. Over time the pile becomes infrastructure because people keep returning to it.

The Cozy pages also preserve the less glamorous parts of aviation culture. Safety information and accident material sit beside success stories and performance charts. That is what a serious enthusiast archive should do: keep the lessons that are expensive to relearn.

Laurent Besset’s solar-balloon site starts with a delightfully old-web proposition: black plastic, sunshine, Archimedes, and enough patience can get something airborne.

A solar balloon is an ultralight hot-air balloon whose envelope absorbs solar radiation instead of being heated by a burner.

Besset’s English section explains the principle, materials, construction, tethered and free flight, experimental uses, historical examples, and several scales of balloon.

The numbers make the concept immediately tangible.

The site says a four-meter balloon can lift about 2 kilograms, an eleven-meter balloon about 55 kilograms, and a 14.5-meter balloon about 120 kilograms under suitable conditions.

At the tiny end, there is a mini-balloon made from black plastic trash bags, adhesive tape, and ordinary household tools that can lift roughly 80 grams.

A hobby site with engineering underneath it

The archive is not just a set of pretty balloon photographs.

It includes discussions of thermal radiation, polyethylene film, buoyancy, materials, construction methods, free-flight technique, payloads, radio-amateur uses, educational experiments, and reports from actual launches.

One page points to a June 2000 flight in Grenoble. Other material reaches back to a 1982 Pif Gadget feature involving a small cylindrical solar balloon.

The larger site describes more than ninety pages, over eighty drawings, and more than 160 photographs across its multilingual material.

Its presentation is also a period artifact.

There are separate French, English, and Spanish sections, links to a Yahoo Groups solar-balloon community, hand-made navigation graphics, and badges proudly announcing conformance with XHTML, HTML, and CSS standards.

That last part is worth remembering. There was a period when putting a validator badge on the bottom of a page felt like bolting an inspection plate to something you had built yourself.

Ancient Web: Potomac Airfield Runs an Airport Website Like the FAA Is Listening

Potomac Airfield’s website contains real aviation information and an airport history that claims the Soviet Union collapsed after losing strategic access to the runway.

VKX is a privately owned public-use general aviation airport in Friendly, Maryland, near Washington, D.C. The site covers flight training, airspace access, airport procedures, and the extra bureaucracy that comes with operating next to some of the most restricted airspace in the United States.

It also refuses to discuss any of this with a straight face.

The homepage advertises “directed energy weapons” that can cancel your flight plan. The history page treats FAA paperwork as an archaeological layer and reports that prehistoric Martian pterodactyls used the site as an off-loading facility.

Useful information wrapped in institutional sarcasm

The jokes work because the underlying problem is real.

Potomac sits inside the Washington Special Flight Rules Area and Flight Restricted Zone environment. Pilots using the airport have had to deal with access procedures, security rules, instrument approaches, FAA coordination, and layers of post-9/11 airspace restrictions unfamiliar to pilots at an ordinary rural field.

Instead of turning the website into sterile compliance copy, the airport preserved a very specific voice.

The fake historical timeline makes jokes about zoning, federal officials, CIA aircraft, the Iran-Contra affair, the Civil War, Druids, and ancient bureaucrats. Other pages mix legitimate operational guidance with humor that assumes the reader can tell which paragraph is a joke and which one might keep them from receiving an unpleasant phone call.

The result is a working business website that still feels like a personal homepage.

That is increasingly rare.
