Joachim Becker and Heinz Janssen built the larger site around biographies, portraits, mission reports, statistical tables, EVA data, and human-spaceflight records covering astronauts, cosmonauts, taikonauts, and candidates from around the world.

The linked ISS-position page is only one small doorway into that larger collection.

A hobby database became a reference source

Becker traces his interest in human spaceflight back to Apollo 8’s lunar orbit in 1968. He later began building a computer-assisted database of biographical and statistical material on space travelers.

Janssen’s interest developed separately and eventually joined the same project.

The site’s structure reflects that database mentality.

People are not presented only as famous names. They are connected to missions, agencies, flight assignments, portraits, launch and landing events, EVA records, and statistical tables.

The old guestbook is revealing too. Visitors from the early 2000s sent corrections, family information, missing biographical details, and praise for the site’s coverage. One retired scientist who had trained U.S. astronauts offered additional material. Other visitors pointed out errors in names and dates.

That feedback loop is how hand-maintained reference sites become unexpectedly durable.

The site’s update history shows years of incremental maintenance through Soyuz, Shuttle, Crew Dragon, Shenzhou, and newer astronaut selections. The visual design changed far less than the underlying records.

That is almost the inverse of the modern web, where interfaces are frequently rebuilt while old information quietly disappears.

SPACEFACTS kept the database moving.

The history of transportation contains a surprising number of inventors who looked at a normal vehicle and decided the main problem was that it had too many wheels.

Douglas Self’s Museum of Retro Technology documents those decisions with the same mixture of engineering curiosity and dry commentary that runs through the rest of his site.

The result is a gallery of machines that tried to balance, steer, stabilize, or simply survive with fewer contact points than common sense might recommend.

Engineering by subtraction

The collection branches into monowheels and related machines where the rider may sit inside or around a giant wheel, as well as stranger arrangements that blur the line between bicycle, car, gyro vehicle, and mechanical dare.

Some concepts were serious engineering projects. Others look as though their inventors reached the prototype stage before asking the obvious question.

What happens when you brake?

That is the fun of Self’s museum.

It does not treat failed or eccentric technology as useless. A bad transport idea can still reveal what engineers were trying to solve: weight, stability, traction, steering, compactness, mechanical simplicity, or the dream of doing with one wheel what everybody else required four to accomplish.

The pages also preserve the visual evidence that makes these designs understandable. Patent-style drawings, old photographs, captions, dates, and short technical notes let the visitor compare solutions across eras.

Self’s larger Museum of Retro Technology is full of similar branches where engineering wandered somewhere interesting even when industry eventually chose another path.

That is a particularly good fit for the web.

A printed encyclopedia has to justify the space spent on an unsuccessful one-wheel automobile. A personal website can give it an entire page because the author thinks it is fascinating.

Ancient Web: Project GREAT Took Atomic Clocks on a Family Trip to Mount Rainier

General relativity becomes easier to love when somebody loads atomic clocks into a vehicle, brings the kids, and drives up a mountain to see whether Einstein was serious.

That is essentially what happened in September 2005.

Tom Van Baak, a longtime atomic-time hobbyist, took several cesium clocks from home to the Paradise area of Mount Rainier and left them at higher elevation for roughly 42 hours.

The point was simple enough to explain at a kitchen table: clocks higher in Earth’s gravitational field should run slightly faster than clocks lower down.

The expected difference was tiny.

Nanoseconds tiny.

A physics experiment with camping-trip energy

Van Baak later described the net elevation difference between home and the mountain site as about 4,400 feet, or roughly 1,340 meters.

Using the standard low-altitude gravitational time-dilation approximation, that predicts a clock gain on the order of a few dozen nanoseconds over the duration of the stay.

The measured result was about 22 nanoseconds.

The interesting part is not that this replaced laboratory relativity experiments. It did not.

The interesting part is that precision equipment had become accessible enough for an obsessive hobbyist to turn one of physics’ strangest effects into a family-scale experiment.

The accompanying web material preserves the whole spirit of it: hardware, clocks, travel, photographs, calculations, and the slightly deranged confidence required to bring cesium standards on a road trip because altitude changes time.

Later discussions in the timekeeping community kept pointing back to the experiment precisely because it makes an abstract result tangible.

A water tower is one of those things most people notice only when it has the town’s name painted on it and they need to know where the hell they are.

The site is a photographic archive of towers around Texas, organized town by town and mixed with short bits of local geography and history. Pages for places such as Galveston, Round Rock, Hutto, Temple, Manor, and Sealy pair photographs with just enough context to turn the tower into part of the town rather than an isolated object.

Infrastructure becomes a travel collection

The Temple page is a good example of what makes the archive useful.

It does not just show finished towers. One set of photographs documents a new tower while it was still under construction in April 2007, with workers visible inside the tank before the top had been installed.

Elsewhere the site wanders into related collections: Texas wall art, postcards, toys, dolls, books, records, a 1928 Model A, and a 1964 Corvette.

That drift is pure personal web.

A modern niche site would probably insist on staying “on brand.” A personal homepage can begin with water towers and then quietly admit that the people behind it also collect postcards and children’s books.

The photographs are credited to Kay, and the pages preserve a road-trip rhythm: town name, county, a location note, a little history, then the structure itself.

There is no attempt to make municipal water infrastructure glamorous.

That is what makes it good.

A tower that thousands of drivers pass without thinking can become historically useful once someone photographs it before repainting, replacement, demolition, or redevelopment changes the scene.

CanonLaw.info looks like what happens when somebody decides a website should behave less like a publication and more like a filing cabinet with several centuries inside it.

Edward N. Peters’ site is a research center for Catholic canon law. The front page alone points into the 1917 Code, the 1983 Code, Eastern canon law, the Corpus Iuris Canonici, ancient collections, legislative history, commentaries, Latin texts, topical studies, abbreviations, and research tools.

It is dense because the subject is dense.

The web as a legal apparatus

One of the useful things about the site is that it does not pretend canon law can be reduced to a handful of FAQ answers.

Peters presents it as a functioning legal system with historical layers.

The 1917 Pio-Benedictine Code replaced older collections and remained in force until the 1983 Code. The site links original Latin texts, current texts, commentaries, historical materials, and tools for tracking changes.

It also gives the Eastern Catholic code its own path and reaches further backward into collections such as the Decretals of Gregory IX and Gratian’s Concordia.

This kind of organization is where static HTML can be unexpectedly effective.

A researcher does not necessarily need a beautiful interface. They need stable labels, predictable paths, lots of cross-links, and enough explanation to understand which document belongs to which legal period.

The page is unapologetically scholarly and personal at the same time. Peters identifies himself directly, includes his own research interests and notes, links side projects, and states where material represents his views rather than official legal advice.

That mixture used to be common on expert-run websites.

The specialist was visible behind the index.

Ancient Web: Colin MacDonald Built a Scott Joplin MIDI Library by Hand

There is something beautifully old-web about a music archive explaining which mouse button to use if you want to save a MIDI file instead of playing it.

The page, last updated in May 2000, is part of a larger ragtime, march, and waltz collection built around downloadable MIDI sequences.

For Scott Joplin alone, the index runs through dozens of compositions with titles and dates: Maple Leaf Rag, The Entertainer, The Easy Winners, Solace, Pine Apple Rag, Wall Street Rag, and many less famous pieces.

The catalog is the interface

Modern music services hide the file and emphasize playback.

This site does nearly the opposite.

Each entry is treated as an object the visitor can play, save, inspect, or download in compressed form. Separate sequence-summary pages provide additional information, and the larger site organizes music both by title and by composer.

The result feels closer to a personal digital library than a streaming service.

That matters for MIDI in particular.

A MIDI file is not a recording in the ordinary sense. It is performance data: notes, timing, instruments, and instructions rendered by whatever synthesizer or sound hardware the listener has available. The same sequence could sound noticeably different on different computers.

That made MIDI a natural web format in the 1990s. Files were tiny, downloadable over slow connections, and easy to pass around.

MacDonald’s page preserves not only the music but the habits surrounding it. There are frame and non-frame navigation options, ZIP files, small indexes designed to reduce download time, and browser-specific instructions for saving content.

The copyright footer dates the larger project to 1994–2001.

Ancient Web: NOVA’s 1999 To the Moon Site Still Has Apollo QTVR Panorama Energy

In 1999, a television documentary did not get a disposable promotional landing page. It got a miniature lunar museum made of HTML, image buttons, audio, transcripts, puzzles, and QuickTime VR.

The site accompanied NOVA’s two-hour To the Moon special, first broadcast July 13, 1999. Its goal was broader than reminding viewers when the show aired.

It extended the documentary onto the web.

Six moon landings, six QTVRs

The most period-specific feature is a set of 360-degree lunar panoramas built for QuickTime VR, one for each successful Apollo landing.

That phrase alone dates the site beautifully.

Before Street View and browser-native 3D viewers became ordinary, QTVR panoramas were one of the web’s more convincing ways to make a flat monitor feel like a place you could look around inside.

The site also includes lunar puzzles, material on the origin of the Moon, a transcript, and first-person accounts from Apollo figures including Gene Cernan, Buzz Aldrin, and Jim Lovell.

The navigation is compact, image-heavy, and unapologetically specific to the program. There is no infinite scroll and no algorithmically assembled “you may also like” section trying to keep you trapped on PBS forever.

Instead, every link has a job.

The page even preserves its original production context: NOVA Online, WGBH Science Unit, contemporary sponsors, and a creation date of July 1999.

That makes it valuable as more than an Apollo resource.

It shows how serious public-media organizations once treated the web as a place to build supplementary objects that could stand beside a broadcast rather than merely advertise it.

Ancient Web: Princeton’s Medieval Geomancy Page Preserves a Forgotten Divination System

One of the better uses of a university homepage was always this: find some obscure historical subject that almost nobody else has explained online and quietly build the page yourself.

Elizabeth Bennett’s Princeton site does that for medieval geomancy, a form of divination with roots in the medieval Islamic world that later became popular in Europe.

The subject is easy to confuse with modern uses of the word “geomancy,” especially feng shui. Bennett’s page is specifically about the divinatory practice that moved into Western Europe during the Middle Ages and remained in use into the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

A small scholarly web project with actual depth

The site includes a step-by-step explanation of how geomancy was practiced, an annotated bibliography, and a complete transcription of Robert Turner’s 1655 English translation of a geomantic text attributed to Agrippa.

Bennett explains that her interest began while reading John North’s work on Chaucer, where geomancy appears in connection with medieval literature.

That origin gives the site a particularly old-web academic shape.

It is not trying to become the definitive commercial destination for occult history. It is a scholar making notes public, linking sources, transcribing material, and leaving enough structure that another researcher can follow the trail.

The page explicitly describes itself as a work in progress and says that medieval geomancy had received relatively little scholarly attention compared with better-known predictive systems such as astrology.

That makes the site useful in two directions.

It teaches the historical practice itself, but it also preserves evidence of how humanities scholars used personal university web space before institutional content systems flattened everything into standardized faculty profiles.

Ancient Web: The Krib Has Kept Aquarium Usenet Alive Since 1994

The Krib is not just an old aquarium site. It is an old aquarium site that knows exactly how old it is and seems mildly amused that the rest of the web kept changing around it.

Erik Olson says the site has existed since January 1994, making it the first fish-oriented site on the web. It started as a planted-aquarium article that could do something print could not do nearly as well: link directly into background material.

That background material came from Olson’s personal archive of Usenet posts dating back to 1991.

The archive grew from there.

A hobby site became infrastructure

The Krib is organized around practical aquarium subjects: plants and planted tanks, dwarf cichlids, fish and other animals, food, chemistry, hardware, filtration, lighting, disease, marine aquaria, organizations, and miscellaneous material.

A large part of the site’s value is that it preserves discussion rather than merely summarizing conclusions.

Old Usenet posts, e-mail conversations, contributed articles, scanned photographs, and web-native pages sit beside each other. That lets a visitor see how aquarium knowledge circulated before forums, Facebook groups, Reddit, YouTube, and Discord absorbed most hobby discussion.

Olson’s history of the site is especially revealing. He describes converting his Usenet archive into hypertext, hosting material written by other aquarists, scanning photographs sent by contributors, and eventually maintaining related aquarium organizations and FAQ material.

The front page now jokes that the “What’s New?” section contains nothing because the site is barely updated.

That is not really a weakness anymore.

The frozen structure is part of the evidence.

A modern aquarium site would probably be reorganized around products, video, SEO templates, social embeds, and an endless feed of new posts. The Krib still behaves like a reference shelf assembled by somebody who expected readers to follow links sideways until they understood the subject.

Ancient Web: Robert Zverina’s Picture of the Day Kept Web v.1 Alive Since 1997

Robert Zverina’s Picture of the Day has been online since 1997 and seems almost proud that, in important ways, it never learned how the modern web is supposed to behave.

Zverina describes the project as an unpredictable mixture of photography, creative nonfiction, poetry, citizen journalism, and activist calls to action.

More importantly, he explicitly connects it to the early web’s anti-commercial ideal: information free to roam, strange personal voices with room to exist, no advertising requirement, and no need to reduce the whole project to one marketable idea.

His description of the site is wonderfully blunt.

This is where “Web v.1 lives.”

A photo blog before the word settled down

The site’s older index says it was set up in 1997 and links outward into sections for pictures, words, sounds, movies, people, places, and the daily feature.

The Picture of the Day archive is not just a chronological image feed. Entries combine photographs with observations, fragments, writing, jokes, small reports, and whatever else fit that day’s page.

The older navigation itself is part of the artifact.

There are percentage ratings beside links, document dates, page sizes measured in kilobytes, manually grouped categories, guestbook language, and a layout that assumes the visitor may spend time wandering sideways instead of consuming a feed from newest to oldest.

Zverina’s own résumé says the project has continued since 1997 while refusing ads, gimmicks, and a single guiding commercial premise.

That refusal matters more with every passing year.

Most long-running personal projects eventually migrate into a social network, a hosted publishing platform, or a redesigned portfolio that quietly deletes the old structure.

Picture of the Day did something rarer: it kept the personal archive recognizable as itself.
