Notepad.org presents Windows Notepad as the greatest HTML editor ever made, which is technically a joke and also annoyingly difficult to disprove.

The page advertises Notepad as “the Internet’s most versatile HTML editor” and proceeds to describe the plain-text Windows accessory with the breathless feature language normally reserved for commercial Web-authoring software.

Its advantages include a universal file format, low memory use, a simple interface, compatibility with HTML, JavaScript, CGI, Perl, ActiveX, plug-ins, and—most importantly—compatibility with Web formats that have not yet been invented.

Hard to argue with that last one.

A text editor cannot become incompatible with a future markup language if it never pretended to understand the markup in the first place.

The joke only works because people really did this

During the early Web, hand-coding HTML in a plain text editor was not an affectation.

It was normal.

Visual Web-authoring packages promised to make page creation easier, but they also generated code, inserted metadata, consumed memory, and encouraged users to think about Web pages as documents assembled through software rather than text files they directly controlled.

Notepad.org turns that contrast into satire.

Its sales pitch praises the lack of graphical button bars as an efficiency feature. It celebrates the fact that all HTML remains visible. It points out that users can decide exactly which tags appear because the editor will not helpfully add anything on their behalf.

Those are jokes aimed at heavier authoring tools.

They are also legitimate reasons programmers still reach for simple text editors.

The page even offers a “Created with Notepad” logo, parodying the badges that once announced which commercial editor or browser technology had been used to create a site.

That tiny badge summarizes an entire Web-design culture war.

Should authoring tools hide the code, or should the person building the page understand what the browser is actually receiving?

Notepad.org has selected a side.

Violently.

The site is especially funny now because modern Web development eventually produced toolchains vastly more complicated than the visual editors being mocked. A contemporary project can involve package managers, transpilers, frameworks, build systems, containers, and enough dependencies to make 1990s FrontPage look like carving HTML into a tree.

Meanwhile, Notepad can still save a text file.

Ancient Web: GoldenEye Forever Refused to Let One N64 Game Die

Most fan sites eventually become memorials. GoldenEye Forever behaves more like the game is still under active investigation.

The site is devoted to GoldenEye 007 for the Nintendo 64, but “devoted” barely covers it.

There are cheats, GameShark codes, emulator guides, multiplayer strategies, custom levels, videos, weapon information, hidden-content research, and material documenting the community that kept pushing the 1997 game long after the original hardware generation had ended.

One of the site’s signature subjects is the Citadel, a famous unfinished level left inside the game’s data.

Fan researchers gradually learned how to expose more of it. By the mid-2000s, GoldenEye Forever was documenting a fully playable multiplayer form accessed through extensive GameShark coding. Historical accounts of the discovery describe code sets running to thousands of lines.

That is no longer merely playing the game.

That is excavation with controllers.

A game that kept getting new rooms

GoldenEye Forever also documents the wider modding scene that formed around the game.

Community members converted single-player areas into multiplayer maps, imported environments inspired by Perfect Dark, experimented with custom weapon sets, pushed emulator-based online play, and treated the original ROM as a platform for continued development.

The site’s writing repeatedly returns to the same idea: GoldenEye keeps evolving because players keep finding things to do with it.

There is a nice old-Web quality to how the discoveries are presented.

The homepage is dense. Screenshots pile up. Download links sit beside personal commentary. Updates refer to forum regulars by handle because the audience is assumed to know who these people are. The site feels less like a polished publication and more like a clubhouse whose filing cabinets happen to be public.

That is useful history.

The surrounding community mattered because many discoveries did not originate from companies or official re-releases. They came from hobbyists examining the game, sharing codes, building tools, testing on real hardware, and comparing results in forums.

A commercial product became a collaborative object.

Whoosh! looked at Xena: Warrior Princess fandom and decided the correct response was apparently to build a quasi-academic journal around it.

The site first went online on September 17, 1996 and became the home of the International Association of Xena Studies, usually shortened to IAXS.

The joke in the name never prevented the archive from becoming seriously substantial.

Whoosh! contains essays, episode guides, interviews, letters, convention reports, airing schedules, fandom history, fiction, media analysis, staff biographies, news archives, and issue-by-issue material going back into the period when Xena was still airing new episodes.

The site describes IAXS as a “quasi-literate, quasi-academic, quasi-fandom” excuse to write about the show and related strong female characters.

That is a joke with an extremely large bibliography attached.

Fandom before the platform swallowed it

One of the most valuable things about Whoosh! is that it preserves discussion from the moment rather than a later reconstruction of what fans supposedly cared about.

Issue archives contain episode reactions, arguments over characters, interviews with cast and production figures, fan theories, letters to the editor, and long-form analysis written while the television series was still culturally alive.

A 1997 issue, for example, included an interview with actor Kevin Smith alongside essays on feminism, character development, food in the Xenaverse, and why viewers connected with the show.

One long article from 2000 examines the XENA Palace, a graphical chat environment launched in 1998 where fans moved avatars through themed rooms and talked in speech bubbles. Some people watch a movie and see an action scene. Tom Rogers watches the same scene and starts calculating whether the bus, bullet, spacecraft, or human body has just committed a felony against Newton.

The project lives inside Intuitor, a website Rogers created in the 1990s around creative learning and science. Insultingly Stupid Movie Physics became its best-known section by reviewing films according to what their scenes ask physics to tolerate.

The joke works because the science is real.

The site discusses familiar movie habits such as cars exploding too easily, visible laser beams, sound in space, impossible jumps, unrealistic gun behavior, and action sequences where momentum apparently signed a waiver before filming began.

Movies receive physics ratings that parody familiar content-rating systems, turning technical criticism into something readable even if the visitor has not touched a textbook in years.

Nitpicking as science education

The important part is that the site does not stop at saying “that is wrong.”

It explains why.

A bad movie jump becomes a lesson about trajectories and acceleration. An explosion becomes an excuse to talk about energy. Space combat opens the door to vacuum, inertia, and the fact that spacecraft do not behave exactly like fighter planes with stars painted behind them.

That educational angle was recognized outside the site. Physics-education resources cataloged Insultingly Stupid Movie Physics as material useful for students and instructors, and the project eventually expanded into a 2007 book by Rogers.

The site famously reserved special contempt for The Core, which it identified as an especially severe offender.

That movie dug to the center of the Earth.

The website dug through the screenplay afterward.

The larger Intuitor site dates to 1996, which puts the project in a period when independent educational websites were often exactly that: one knowledgeable person deciding to explain something in public without waiting for a platform, publisher, or content strategy meeting.

That makes the tone part of the artifact.

It is educational, opinionated, mildly exasperated, and willing to spend far more time on one impossible scene than the filmmakers probably spent checking it.

Ancient Web: Abandoned & Little-Known Airfields Maps Vanished Runways

An airport can disappear without vanishing completely. A runway becomes a road, a hangar becomes a warehouse, a subdivision eats the field, and fifty years later somebody notices the geometry from an aerial photograph.

Paul Freeman has been collecting those traces on the Web since April 1999.

The site says it now contains descriptions and images for more than 2,800 abandoned or little-known airfields across all fifty states, with additional coverage for places including Puerto Rico and western Pacific islands. Entries are built from aeronautical charts, airport directories, historic aerial photographs, topographic maps, contributed photographs, firsthand memories, and whatever other evidence can establish where a field was and what happened to it.

The result is less like an airport directory and more like forensic geography.

History written in runways

A typical entry may begin with the earliest map or aerial image Freeman has located, follow changes to runway layout or ownership, note when buildings appeared or disappeared, and continue until the field was abandoned, redeveloped, or reduced to faint traces visible from above.

Some sites were military fields. Others were municipal airports, private strips, industrial fields, emergency landing sites, or tiny local airports that mattered enormously to one community and almost nowhere else.

The archive is also unusually transparent about uncertainty.

An entry may say that little is known about a field’s original name or purpose. Another may distinguish between the earliest depiction located and the actual construction date. Missing photographs are described as missing rather than magically reconstructed into certainty.

That is good archival behavior.

Freeman describes the project as combining “history & mystery,” and the site invites readers to contribute dated photographs, charts, directories, and personal information that can expand individual entries.

That crowdsourced element is part of why a long-running specialist website can become more useful over time instead of less. Someone eventually finds the old airport directory in a box. Someone recognizes the runway from childhood. Somebody has the photograph no institution knew existed.

The site celebrated its twenty-fifth anniversary in 2024 and continues receiving revisions in 2026.

That is an impressive lifespan for any independent Web project, especially one whose raw material keeps disappearing under parking lots.

The site traces its lineage back to a homepage era beginning in the late 1990s. One surviving site-history page places the creation of The NES Enshrined in January 1998 after an earlier personal homepage and a growing obsession with old game sites, MIDIs, reviews, and the scattered fan culture surrounding the NES.

What followed was not a clean publication plan.

It was accumulation.

FlyingOmelette.com grew into reviews, game oddities, music archives, character projects, hosted shrines, update logs, forums, rescued material from dead sites, reader mail, guides, and long-running arguments about obscure glitches that almost nobody outside a tiny community remembers.

That is exactly why it matters.

A website that kept its own sediment layers

The update logs are unusually valuable because they record the maintenance history of the site itself.

A 2009 entry describes archiving two older gaming websites after their free hosts deteriorated, repairing links where possible, recovering missing FAQs, and noting files that could no longer be found. Other entries document migrations between forum systems, broken RSS feeds, dead services, rediscovered passwords hidden in old games, and the slow disappearance of sites that once formed the surrounding neighborhood.

In other words, Flying Omelette did not merely survive old-Web attrition.

It documented some of the attrition while it happened.

A later retrospective from another retro-gaming site noted that Flying Omelette was still online more than twenty-five years after its beginnings and still contained reviews, guides, hosted shrines, music collections, and material from earlier gaming communities.

The site also preserves a very different model of games writing.

There is professional criticism in the world, and there is platform-driven content designed around whatever release is generating traffic this week.

Flying Omelette is neither.

A review might exist because the author remembers a bad Atari 2600 version of Pac-Man. A page may investigate one strange line in a game, one missing password, one soundtrack, or one weird localization choice because somebody cared enough to keep digging.

That kind of narrow attention is where fan archives become useful history.

Ancient Web: Links.net Has Been Oversharing Since 1994

Justin Hall started putting his life on the Web in 1994, before “blog” was a common word and before anybody had built a platform telling people where the Publish button should go.

The surviving introduction is frozen in the summer of 1996. Hall says he had already been running the site for more than two years and describes the Web as a place to share his mind, publish writing, meet people he did not yet know, and teach others how to make pages of their own.

That is almost the entire social Web in embryo.

The difference is that Links.net does not feel like a profile inside somebody else’s system. It feels like a person’s room with the walls removed.

Hall wrote about school, sex, work, family, travel, technology, dreams, relationships, people he met, and whatever else happened to be occupying his attention. He linked aggressively between subjects, pages, images, and older notes. The structure grew organically instead of being forced into a timeline designed by a platform.

Personal publishing before the template

Hall’s current description of Links.net says he has used the Web to publish personal notes since January 1994. He also openly describes the result as a mess of pages containing broken links, inaccuracies, and too much information.

That mess is historically useful.

A polished retrospective would erase the way early personal websites actually accumulated. Old pages stayed online. Newer pages linked backward. Navigation systems changed. Sections were abandoned without being removed. An image map or text link could become a permanent door into a previous version of the author.

The 1996 introduction also captures the evangelical phase of the Web. Hall was not merely using it. He was offering to teach other people how to publish because he thought the medium itself was worth spreading.

He wrote that publishing on the Web was a way to reach friends you did not know you had yet.

That sentence aged suspiciously well.

What changed is the ownership structure around it. Modern personal publishing usually begins by choosing a service. Links.net began by making pages and deciding where they should point.

That gave the author enormous freedom and also guaranteed decades of maintenance debt.

Worth it.

Margo’s Beadie Critter Collection has more than 1,400 free patterns for turning plastic pony beads into tiny animals, characters, ornaments, and objects, which is an impressive amount of infrastructure devoted to a craft most people last encountered attached to somebody’s backpack.

The site describes itself as the oldest continuously running beadie-pattern website still in existence.

More importantly, it behaves like one.

The collection is organized around printable or viewable patterns rather than an endless stream of project photos. Visitors can browse animals, cartoon characters, holiday designs, insects, reptiles, birds, cats, dogs, rabbits, movie characters, and a huge range of other subjects assembled from the same basic vocabulary of beads and cord.

The site was still being updated in August 2026.

That turns it from a frozen artifact into something stranger and better: an old-Web format that simply refused to stop being useful.

A craft archive becomes a rescue operation

The most interesting part is what happens after neighboring websites disappear.

Margo notes that several other beadie-pattern sites have gone defunct and that she has been archiving their surviving patterns into Pinterest collections alongside material from her own site and Evelyn’s beadie site.

That is the lifecycle of small hobby websites in miniature.

At first, everybody builds their own page. Patterns circulate through links, personal collections, email, and hand-coded indexes. Years later, domains expire, free hosting closes, images vanish, and suddenly the person who kept updating their page becomes an archivist whether they planned to or not.

Beadie Critters also preserves the practical culture around the patterns. Beginners are pointed toward a gecko tutorial. Broken-link reports are invited. The site still tells visitors to refresh the page if newly added patterns are not appearing, a wonderfully ordinary reminder of an era when browser cache behavior was part of website tech support.

The visual style and structure are not pretending to be a museum exhibit.

That matters.

This is a working hobby reference whose design grew around the task of helping people find and make things. The categories exist because somebody needs the dog pattern, not because a content strategist discovered that “dog bead patterns” has search volume.

There are newer layers now—Pinterest boards, a blog, YouTube tutorials, affiliate links—but the core remains a manually curated pattern library.

Ancient Web: The Data Egg Tried to Replace the Tiny Keyboard With Seven Buttons

The Data Egg began with a problem that still has not gone away: once a computer gets small enough, the keyboard becomes the part that refuses to cooperate.

Gary Friedman developed the original concept at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory around 1990. The goal was a position-independent input device that could be used with one hand while standing, walking, reclining, moving around a workspace, or operating in environments where a desk and keyboard were unavailable.

The first physical prototype was literally built around a plastic Easter egg.

Seven buttons were positioned where the fingers naturally rested: several under the thumb and one for each remaining finger. Characters were entered by pressing combinations of buttons, like playing chords on a piano.

The egg shape did not survive.

The name did.

Chording instead of shrinking QWERTY again

The Data Egg was Friedman’s answer to a design habit that portable computing repeatedly fell into: take a normal keyboard, make it tiny, and then act surprised when human fingers stay the same size.

The site describes earlier inspiration from Microwriter’s one-handed systems and explains how the Data Egg alphabet was designed so button patterns could resemble letter shapes, making the chord combinations easier to learn.

Later prototypes moved away from the literal egg and experimented with smaller shapes, finger-joint activation, belt clips, displays, and designs that could be held without a strap.

The promotional material reads like a time capsule from the personal-digital-assistant era. It imagines one handheld device combining messaging, calendars, notes, address books, translation, alarms, and other personal information functions while allowing the user to capture text anywhere.

In other words, a great deal of what eventually landed in smartphones—minus the seven-button egg keyboard.

The site also preserves the failure state honestly.

Friedman says he pursued the idea for more than fifteen years, but development ended on January 1, 2005. No product reached the mass market. The page was intentionally left online in the hope that someone else might pick up the concept.

That makes it a particularly useful Web artifact.

Most technology histories emphasize products that won. The Data Egg documents a serious alternative input idea through prototypes, diagrams, FAQs, design reasoning, comparisons with competing devices, and the eventual admission that the project stopped.

The first prototype’s ridiculous physical construction makes the archive better, not worse. Somebody had an interaction problem, grabbed an Easter egg, glued buttons to it, and tested the idea with their actual hand.

That is what prototyping is supposed to look like before the industrial designer arrives and removes all evidence of human improvisation.

The site tracks time-trial records across F-Zero on Super Nintendo, F-Zero X, Maximum Velocity, and GP Legend. Current records are presented with players, countries, dates, modes, vehicles, and links to video where available.

But the useful part is the history.

Individual game sections let visitors inspect records by date, see recent improvements, rank players, and look at the longest-lasting records. The SNES archive reaches back into 1991 and 1992, when record evidence often came from Japanese publications rather than YouTube uploads or emulator files.

That creates an unusual preservation problem.

Modern competitive gaming expects proof. Old competitive gaming often left a number in a magazine.

The site keeps both.

A leaderboard with sediment layers

The SNES section records performances that lasted for years because nobody had a centralized global mechanism for continuously challenging them.

Some old entries include approximate dates because the surviving source identified a month but not a precise day. Later records become more exact. Eventually video links appear. The evidence changes as the Internet changes.

That makes the database more than a list of fast times.

It documents the transition from local and magazine-based competition into the modern speedrunning environment, where players from different countries can upload attempts, compare techniques immediately, and shave hundredths of a second from runs that have already been optimized for decades.

The site is still active. Records from 2026 sit beside performances attributed to players in the early 1990s. On some tracks, historical records held for thousands of days before being replaced.

Those long reigns are almost impossible to appreciate from a current leaderboard alone. Once a new number takes the top row, the old achievement vanishes unless somebody deliberately retains the sequence.

F-Zero World Record History does.

That matters particularly for games with long competitive lives. A record is not just a time. It is a relationship between a player, the techniques known at that moment, the hardware and regional version being used, and every previous attempt that established what people thought the limit was.
