The Contemplator’s Folk Music Site organizes traditional music from England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales, and America, with lyrics, tune information, historical notes, MIDI files, and sections devoted to topics such as sea songs, love songs, children’s songs, war, crime, American history, and the Francis J. Child ballads.

It also grew sideways into short historical essays on subjects connected to the songs: highwaymen, grog, naval history, composers, poets, sailors, and other bits of the world that produced the music.

That structure is what makes the site interesting.

A song is more useful when the context survives with it

Traditional songs are messy historical objects.

Names change. Lyrics change. Melodies migrate. A song may be described as Irish, English, Scottish, or American depending on which version somebody encountered first. Dates are often approximate and neat origin stories frequently become less neat when sources are compared.

Nelson does not hide that uncertainty. The American-song section explicitly warns that dates are approximate and that many songs associated with America arrived from England, Scotland, and Ireland with the people who carried them.

A slide rule is a calculator that cannot add two ordinary numbers, which sounds like a design failure until you watch it multiply, divide, take roots, and estimate powers without batteries, silicon, or mercy for decimal-point mistakes.

Eric Marcotte built Sliderule.ca around that strange little machine and the enormous variety of forms it took.

The site contains scans and descriptions from his collection, an introduction to how slide rules work, histories of the instrument, explanations of common scales, manuals, restoration advice, buying guidance, books, manufacturer sections, and detailed studies of individual models.

Marcotte says he stopped actively collecting years ago but kept the site online as a resource.

That decision is the reason the site still matters.

The rule was a whole computing platform

The basic principle is logarithmic. By moving scales against each other, multiplication can be turned into the addition of distances. A standard rule can produce useful approximate results very quickly, usually to a few significant figures.

But that simple description hides how specialized the devices became.

Sliderule.ca catalogs rules from makers such as Dietzgen, Faber-Castell, Hemmi, Pickett, Keuffel & Esser, Nestler, and others. Some were general engineering tools. Others carried specialized scales for electrical work, chemistry, surveying, aviation, finance, or other technical fields.

There is a good old-Web footnote in the site’s own history. Sliderule.ca was covered by the Los Angeles Times in 2001, discussed on Slashdot shortly afterward, and linked by Memepool. There are repair websites written by people who read the manual, and there are repair websites written by people who have already seen the exact stupid thing you just did to your expensive board.

Eva Hollmann’s Board Lady site is emphatically the second kind.

The homepage describes her as the “Queen of Fix” and says thousands of epoxy water-toy repairs passed through her hands. The repair menu turns that experience into a sprawling technical reference covering fiberglass, sandwich construction, fiber orientation, inserts, vacuum bagging, soft decks, nose and rail damage, powerbox replacement, fin repair, leak testing, paint, non-skid surfaces, and the kind of ugly structural failures that do not fit into a five-minute tutorial.

It is less a blog than a field manual written by somebody with resin under her fingernails.

The useful knowledge lives between the official procedures

Composite boards are deceptive objects.

From the outside they look smooth and simple. Inside, they can be combinations of foam cores, fiberglass, carbon, veneers, high-density inserts, sandwich materials, adhesives, paint systems, and hardware that transfers large loads through a very small area.

That means a repair can look cosmetic while the actual problem is structural.

The Board Lady spends a lot of time on that distinction.

Pages explain how damage progresses, why soft decks form, how loads move through sandwich construction, when vacuum bagging matters, how to think about fiber direction, and why simply filling a hole is not the same thing as rebuilding the part of the board that used to carry the load.

The site was created by Raymond Castile and carries a 1996 copyright. Castile describes the collection as an attempt to preserve a disappearing piece of popular culture: monster toys associated with an era of Creature Features, Chiller Theater, Famous Monsters of Filmland, plastic monsters, cheap novelty items, and children who considered Frankenstein considerably more interesting than whatever the adults were watching.

The site’s language is affectionate without pretending these objects were museum-quality sculpture.

They were toys.

Often weird toys.

Before horror merchandise became a product strategy

Modern horror collecting is organized. There are premium figures, licensed replicas, convention exclusives, archival packaging, grading, limited editions, and companies that can sell a twelve-inch monster with forty-seven points of articulation to an adult who has already cleared shelf space for it.

The world documented by The Gallery of Monster Toys is rougher around the edges.

Castile’s collection includes the kinds of objects that survived because somebody liked them enough not to throw them away. The site frames their imperfections as part of their appeal. These monsters came from a period when horror fandom was built through television packages, magazines, model kits, novelty shops, local movie hosts, toys, and whatever else a kid could get his hands on.

Ancient Web: Big Ball of Mud Named the Architecture Everybody Pretends Not to Build

Software architecture diagrams are usually neat because nobody puts the emergency shell script, duplicate database, one terrifying global variable, and the service Bob wrote in 2017 but nobody is allowed to restart on the diagram.

Brian Foote and Joseph Yoder gave that other architecture a name: Big Ball of Mud.

The paper grew out of the software-patterns community in the 1990s and was presented in connection with PLoP ’97. Its central observation was uncomfortable precisely because it was obvious: the most common software architecture was not the carefully layered, elegantly decoupled system celebrated in books and conference talks.

It was the sprawling one.

The authors describe a Big Ball of Mud as a haphazardly structured system shaped by expedient repair, piecemeal growth, shared information, duplicated knowledge, and code that survives because changing it cleanly is harder than adding one more patch.

The site still preserves the paper, related presentations, and later commentary around it.

Bad architecture can still be successful software

The interesting part of the essay is that it does not simply shout “bad programmer” and go home.

Foote and Yoder examine why these systems appear.

They discuss patterns such as Throwaway Code that was never actually thrown away and Piecemeal Growth where useful systems expand one local decision at a time. A prototype succeeds. Somebody adds a feature. Then another. Customers depend on it. Deadlines become real. The temporary structure acquires a payroll department.

Before radioteletype became a menu option in radio software, it involved actual teleprinters, terminal units, racks of electronics, paper, motors, and enough mechanical noise to make the operating position feel employed.

Henry Rogers, WA7YBS, built a page that documents that older physical world in unusual depth.

The Radio Boulevard article covers a short history of radioteletype, the companies and inventors behind teleprinter development, classic Teletype and Kleinschmidt machines, terminal units, converters, parts, accessories, station photographs, and practical restoration material.

One of the earliest milestones it notes is a U.S. Navy demonstration in August 1922 that sent radioteletype from an aircraft to a ground receiving station.

That matters because RTTY sits in an interesting place between radio history and computing history.

The messages were digital in the broad sense: characters encoded into signals and sent over radio. But the receiving end could be a machine full of gears, relays, selectors, motors, paper tape, and type mechanisms rather than a screen running a decoder.

The hardware is the history

Modern explanations of RTTY often begin with tone frequencies, baud rates, and software configuration. Useful, but incomplete.

Photographs show complete stations with teleprinter machines, homebrew equipment, receivers, oscilloscopes, converters, and the heavy furniture needed to support all of it. The site is a dense specialist reference devoted largely to the production details of modern United States paper currency. Its serial-number pages attempt to catalog the ranges used for each series and denomination, with attention to production facilities, print-run sizes, blocks, star notes, gaps, numbering changes, and oddities that are invisible unless you already know to look for them.

One of the site’s printable references describes its goal as an attempt to exhaustively catalog serial-number ranges beginning with the 18-subject-sheet printings introduced in 1952.

That is an aggressively specific mission.

It is also exactly the sort of mission the old Web was good at.

The interesting part is in the manufacturing details

The site explains how modern Federal Reserve Note serial numbers are structured, how prefix and suffix letters work, why replacement notes use stars, and how numbering conventions changed as printing equipment and sheet formats changed.

It also documents things most casual collectors would never think to ask about: conventional versus COPE serial numbering, standard print-run sizes, block and group lists, maximum serials, uncut collector sheets, and serial ranges that remain uncertain enough for the site to maintain a list of “known unknowns.”

That last category may be the best part.

Ancient Web: Don’s Maps Is an Archaeology Site Built by Obsession

Don’s Maps is what happens when somebody keeps following the footnotes instead of deciding the research project has gotten big enough.

Don Hitchcock’s site began around an interest in Paleolithic archaeology and maps connected with Jean Auel’s Earth’s Children novels, then expanded outward into an enormous personal reference covering Ice Age sites, cave paintings, Venus figurines, stone tools, human evolution, ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, Australian archaeology, rock art, burials, geology, prehistoric technology, and much more.

The scale is difficult to understand from the homepage alone.

The sitemap is the better clue.

It runs through caves, rock shelters, archaeological sites, tools, decorative objects, extinct animals, hominins, maps, translations, photographs, and long topic pages that often combine historic excavation material with newer scholarship and the author’s own explanations.

This is not a minimalist website.

It is a research desk that escaped into HTML.

Personal websites can become reference institutions

One of the strongest features of Don’s Maps is its dependence on primary and specialist material.

Hitchcock reproduces and discusses old excavation drawings, site plans, museum objects, historic photographs, maps, and scholarly papers. He also translates material that is difficult to find in English and explains on the site that he spends substantial time using dictionaries and translation tools to make otherwise inaccessible research available to readers.

That kind of work is easy to underestimate because it does not arrive wrapped in an institutional interface.

The site looks personal because it is personal.

The useful part is that the person kept going.

Pages on places such as Altamira, Chauvet, Willendorf, Dolní Věstonice, Kostenki, Atapuerca, and many less famous archaeological sites gather images and references that would otherwise require bouncing between museum catalogs, academic papers, scanned books, and unrelated archives.

There is an important distinction here.

Don’s Maps is not automatically authoritative simply because it is enormous. Some material reflects Hitchcock’s own synthesis or interpretation, and individual claims still need to be checked against primary scholarship when accuracy matters.

Ancient Web: The TeamTNT Memorial Keeps a Doom Modding Collective Online

TeamTNT began as a group of Doom hobbyists and ended up inside official Doom history.

The group formed out of the active Doom-editing community in the mid-1990s. Members were spread across different locations and coordinated online, building levels, tools, total conversions, deathmatch packs, and eventually engine technology that would influence Doom mapping far beyond their own releases.

Their most famous project was TNT: Evilution.

The megawad was originally intended to be released free to the Doom community. Historical accounts describe id Software contacting team leader Ty Halderman only hours before the planned public release and arranging to acquire the project.

TNT: Evilution became one half of 1996’s commercial Final Doom.

That is an extraordinary path from hobby project to official product.

It was also controversial at the time because some Doom players saw the commercialization of a community-made WAD as crossing a line that had not really existed until somebody crossed it.

Modders building infrastructure

TeamTNT’s importance goes beyond one release.

The group also produced projects including Icarus: Alien Vanguard, Eternal Doom, deathmatch packs, and development resources. TeamTNT members were responsible for the Boom source port, which relaxed engine limits and added features that became deeply important to later Doom level design.

That matters because modding communities often leave two kinds of legacy.

The obvious one is content: maps, graphics, music, and campaigns people can still play.

The less visible one is infrastructure: tools, standards, techniques, engines, documentation, and workflows that let everybody else build more ambitious things afterward.

TeamTNT did both.

The memorial site preserves that identity after the original organization largely wound down. Ty Halderman, who had been a central organizer and later maintained the enormous idgames archive, died in 2015. By then TeamTNT had already become part of Doom history rather than merely an active mapping crew.

The old pages matter because distributed creative groups are unusually easy to lose.

There may be no office, company archive, filing cabinet, or institutional historian. The work exists in ZIP files, mailing-list posts, readme files, websites, and the memories of people who once knew which handle belonged to which mapper.

Ancient Web: BBC Politics ’97 Is Still Serving the 1997 Election

The BBC still has chunks of 1997 sitting on its servers where the Web left them.

Politics ’97 was an early BBC online politics project and a direct predecessor to the shape BBC News Online would later take.

The surviving area covers the 1997 general election, polling, party leadership contests, devolution debates in Scotland and Wales, party conferences, the Hong Kong handover, and individual political stories published throughout the year.

A 2005 retrospective by former BBC web producer Martin Belam described Politics ’97 as a large orphaned area still sitting on BBC.co.uk after the organization began cataloging old directories and site owners.

That is a wonderfully old-Web phrase: orphaned area.

The site survived because nobody had deleted the directory.

News before the modern news site

Politics ’97 is useful because it shows a major broadcaster experimenting with online journalism before the conventions had settled.

The homepage relied heavily on graphical navigation. Some category graphics were animated GIFs. Individual stories lived in date-based paths. Election material sat beside forums, background explainers, polling, and invitations for readers to participate in discussions.

The editor’s welcome message described the BBC as preparing coverage for voting days, following polls, and inviting users to write in with feedback.

This was not yet a polished global news platform.

It was a broadcaster learning what a news website should contain.

The archive is especially valuable because it is not just an election-night snapshot. It preserves the surrounding political year: leadership changes, policy stories, constitutional debates, and articles that later researchers still cite directly.

Belam also identified Election 97 as the BBC’s first online coverage of a UK general election. That material sat alongside Politics ’97 and documented the election won by Tony Blair’s Labour Party after eighteen years of Conservative government.

The visual design is obviously old.

The important part is that the information architecture is old too.

You can see a newsroom working out how television, text reporting, background material, polls, archives, and audience participation might fit together on the Web.
