Ancient Web: A Collector Mapped the Strange History of Soviet Calculators

Sergei Frolov’s Soviet Calculators History is the sort of page that starts with an abacus and eventually leaves you staring at a family tree of electronic machines most Western computer histories barely mention. It is part collector’s guide, part technical history, and part artifact from the era when enthusiasts translated their own specialist research onto the Web.

Frolov begins before electronics with the Russian abacus, or schoty. One of the small but revealing details on the page is that a Soviet trade-calculation textbook published as late as 1986 still devoted material to performing calculations on an abacus. From there the story moves through slide rules and into the increasingly complicated world of Soviet electronic calculators.

The value of the page is not that it simply lists model numbers. Frolov was collecting the machines themselves. He describes a collection of more than fifty distinct Soviet calculator models, along with dozens of books, magazines, manuals, and related pieces of documentation. That physical collection gave the Web page a level of specificity that generic computer-history timelines often lack.

There is also an unusually visible translation history. The English page explains that it came from a translated Russian article and points readers toward the Russian original and other English translations. Frolov even asks readers to help correct the English. That is wonderfully old-Web behavior: publish the useful thing now, expose where it came from, and let knowledgeable visitors improve it.

For researchers in 2026, this matters because Soviet consumer electronics can be awkward to study across language, model-name, and documentation barriers. A collector who knows which machines belong together, what literature accompanied them, and how the technology changed over time can provide a map that would be expensive to reconstruct from scattered auction listings and isolated photographs.

The page also demonstrates why personal collections were so important to the early informational Web. The author did not need to establish an institution before publishing. Owning the hardware, studying it, finding the literature, and caring enough to explain it were sufficient credentials to create a useful reference.

That model produced some uneven pages, of course. It also produced resources that institutions never bothered to build.

Ancient Web: Sliderule.ca Keeps the Calculator That Doesn’t Add Alive

A slide rule is a calculator that cannot add two ordinary numbers, which sounds like a design failure until you watch it multiply, divide, take roots, and estimate powers without batteries, silicon, or mercy for decimal-point mistakes.

Eric Marcotte built Sliderule.ca around that strange little machine and the enormous variety of forms it took.

The site contains scans and descriptions from his collection, an introduction to how slide rules work, histories of the instrument, explanations of common scales, manuals, restoration advice, buying guidance, books, manufacturer sections, and detailed studies of individual models.

Marcotte says he stopped actively collecting years ago but kept the site online as a resource.

That decision is the reason the site still matters.

The rule was a whole computing platform

The basic principle is logarithmic. By moving scales against each other, multiplication can be turned into the addition of distances. A standard rule can produce useful approximate results very quickly, usually to a few significant figures.

But that simple description hides how specialized the devices became.

Sliderule.ca catalogs rules from makers such as Dietzgen, Faber-Castell, Hemmi, Pickett, Keuffel & Esser, Nestler, and others. Some were general engineering tools. Others carried specialized scales for electrical work, chemistry, surveying, aviation, finance, or other technical fields.

One section tracks the evolution of the K&E 4053 through numerous design changes across decades while the manufacturer kept the same basic model number. Another page explains scale labels whose one-letter names make perfect sense only after somebody has already explained them to you.

The restoration material is just as useful as the history.

Marcotte discusses cleaning, aging materials, manuals, and the practical problem of keeping an old precision instrument usable rather than merely decorative. The site also preserves high-resolution scans that let collectors compare details between examples.

There is a good old-Web footnote in the site’s own history. Sliderule.ca was covered by the Los Angeles Times in 2001, discussed on Slashdot shortly afterward, and linked by Memepool. The page even remembers what being “slashdotted” felt like when one popular link could suddenly become a load test.

That era is part of the artifact now too.

In 2026, a phone can outperform a slide rule so completely that comparing them is almost silly. But that is not the interesting comparison. The slide rule represents a different relationship with calculation: the operator had to understand magnitude, precision, and where the decimal point belonged because the instrument would happily provide a plausible-looking answer without doing that thinking for you.

Ancient Web: Rechenmaschinen-Illustrated Put the History of Calculating Machines Back Online

A book about mechanical calculators becomes far more dangerous to your free time when somebody puts it online and starts adding pictures.

The core of Rechenmaschinen-Illustrated is Ernst Martin’s The Calculating Machines, a major historical reference on mechanical calculation. The site presents an online version and extends it with illustrations, articles and additional information.

That extension matters because many machines described in old technical literature are difficult to understand from names and prose alone.

Mechanical calculators are physical mechanisms. Cranks, pinwheels, registers, stepped drums, carry systems and carriage movements make much more sense when the reader can see the hardware being discussed.

A reference used by other references

The Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History points researchers toward Rechenmaschinen-Illustrated as an online version of Martin’s book with added illustrations.

Other calculator collectors do the same.

That gives the site an unusual place in the old web: a private or specialist resource that became useful enough to be cited by institutional collections.

The material reaches into companies and machines that rarely appear in general computer-history writing: Brunsviga, Odhner, Facit, Triumphator, Lipsia and many more.

For researchers, serial numbers, model variations and manufacturing timelines can matter as much as the famous inventions. Collector sites often preserve exactly those details because collectors need them to identify what is physically sitting on a table.

The design itself also qualifies as an artifact. The homepage still announces that it uses frames. A modern browser can complain; the information underneath remains worth reaching.

For webmasters, that is a useful contrast. Presentation ages quickly. Structured specialist knowledge ages much more slowly.

Ancient Web: The Old Calculator Museum

Some websites look old because somebody installed a retro theme. The Old Calculator Web Museum looks old because Rick Bensene has been building the thing since 1997 and never needed to turn it into something else.

This is a museum of actual electronic and electromechanical calculators, not calculator apps and not a gallery of product shots scraped from somewhere else. Bensene maintains working machines, documentation, advertisements, manuals and a few early computers at a private museum in Oregon. Whenever practical, the hardware shown on the site is kept operational.

That alone would make the collection useful. The website makes it better.

Written the old way

The museum is built in basic HTML. Bensene says he writes the pages himself using vi.

No advertising network. No giant publishing framework. No page assembled by a small industrial accident of JavaScript after you arrive.

He also makes a point of saying that none of the site’s content is AI-generated. On a website that began in 1997, that statement feels less like a trend and more like continuity.

The exhibits cover machines from companies including Wang, Canon, Casio, Commodore, Friden and MITS. Specifications sit next to photographs, historical notes, scans and links into increasingly specific corners of calculator history.

MITS is a good example of why this material matters. Before the company became famous for the Altair 8800, it sold electronic calculator kits. That little connection between calculators and the early personal-computer industry is easy to flatten into a sentence in a timeline. Here it gets room to breathe.

More than hardware

The museum also preserves material that tends to disappear even when the machines survive: advertisements, manuals, technical documents and recollections from people who worked in the electronic-calculator industry during the 1960s and 1970s.

Hardware can survive on a shelf. The stories behind it usually need somebody to keep copying them forward.

For webmasters, the site is also a reminder that useful pages do not expire because their markup is unfashionable. A clear hierarchy, stable links and specific information can remain useful for decades.
