Ancient Web: StonePages Put Europe’s Megaliths on the Web in 1995

StonePages is what happens when two people start putting photographs of ancient stones on the Web in 1995 and then simply keep going. Long before location apps, social photo feeds, and polished heritage portals, Diego Meozzi and Paola Arosio were building an online guide to European megalithic sites one visit at a time.

The site’s own history is unusually well documented. It says the project began in 1995 and was originally intended as a guide to the major megalithic monuments of Europe. Meozzi and Arosio did not just compile place names from books. They traveled, photographed sites themselves, wrote descriptions, and distinguished firsthand material from information gathered from other sources.

That matters. StonePages is not merely an old directory whose links survived. It contains fieldwork.

By 2001 the project reported more than 5,000 photographs and information on over 500 archaeological sites. The subject matter ranges across stone circles, standing stones, dolmens, chambered tombs, alignments, and other prehistoric monuments. Famous places sit alongside structures that are much easier to miss unless somebody has already done the legwork.

The website also preserved its own technical evolution. It was renamed Stone Pages in 1998 and went through several redesigns as the Web changed. Its data moved from a flat-file system into an SQL-backed database. That little detail makes the site useful to web historians as well as archaeology readers: this was a serious information project adapting to the Web while both the tools and expectations were still being invented.

There is also Stone Pages Archaeo News, which expanded the project beyond a photographic field guide into an archaeology-news resource. The result is less like a single homepage and more like a small independent publishing operation that happened to grow out of two people visiting old stones.

For a modern webmaster, StonePages is a reminder that useful sites can begin with a brutally simple advantage: the creator has gone somewhere, seen something, measured something, photographed something, or otherwise done work that cannot be generated by rearranging everybody else’s summaries.

That is also why the site still matters in 2026. Search results can tell you that a monument exists. StonePages preserves the accumulated decisions of people who spent years deciding which monuments were worth finding, how to describe them, and what they actually looked like on the ground.

Ancient Web: Old Bricks Turned Stamped Clay Into an Industrial History Database

A brick with a name stamped into it looks like construction debris until somebody knows how to read the name. Brocross hosts one of the Web’s great examples of turning that kind of ordinary object into a serious historical index.

David Kitching’s homepage covers several interests: Cheshire dragonflies, canals, industrial archaeology, coal mining, limekilns and local history. The monster hiding inside it is Old Bricks: History at Your Feet, a site devoted to named British bricks and the works that produced them.

Old Bricks recently passed 10,000 brick images. That number is absurd until you understand the problem the collection solves. Brickworks opened, changed names, merged and disappeared. Clay pits were filled. Factories were demolished. Company records could be thin or nonexistent. A stamped brick may be one of the few durable objects still carrying the maker’s name.

The site organizes examples geographically and alphabetically, with separate sections for England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, foreign bricks, mystery marks, quarry tiles, roof tiles and other related material. Entries often combine photographs with trade-directory dates, works locations, ownership changes and contributor notes.

The mystery section is especially good Internet archaeology. People submit bricks whose initials or marks remain unidentified, and the page accumulates partial clues from finds in canals, excavations, beaches, gardens and demolition sites. One unknown brick pulled from deep water off Spain sits comfortably beside examples recovered from Manchester excavations and Thames mud.

This is not merely collecting for collecting’s sake. Archaeological reports, industrial-history researchers and local-history projects cite Brocross because the database can help connect a stamped object to a manufacturer, place and period. The main Brocross site also preserves extensive material on Poynton’s coal-mining history and other industrial sites.

There is a useful Web lesson here. Community contributions did not require inventing a social network. Kitching built a specialist reference, gave people a way to submit evidence, credited contributors and let the database become more valuable with every new object.

Ancient Web: FlintSource Mapped the Rocks Behind Prehistoric Tools

A prehistoric stone tool does not begin with the tool. It begins with somebody knowing where to find the right stone. FlintSource.NET has spent a quarter-century documenting those source locations with the sort of detail normally produced by somebody who has stood there, picked up the material and taken notes.

The site marked its 25th anniversary in 2024 and dates its beginning to December 30, 1999. Its subject is archaeological raw material: flint, chert, hornstone, quartzite, radiolarite, obsidian and related stone sources.

That sounds narrow until you open an entry.

A typical page may identify the geological formation, give latitude and longitude, describe cortex and color, show field photographs, document sample numbers and photograph actual flakes or nodules. Entries for Nordic flint around Denmark, for example, include GPS coordinates, source photographs and individual samples measured in millimeters. The Calais page contains the kind of field note only an old specialist site would preserve: do not blindly follow one coordinate to the second in fog, darkness or poor visibility because the sample point was on the edge of a cliff and part of it may have fallen into the sea since 2002.

That is much more useful than a generic encyclopedia paragraph about flint.

The website still advertises itself as best viewed in Internet Explorer 5+ or Netscape 6+, which is a fairly effective carbon date for its design. Yet the actual database remains intelligible because the structure is simple: source name, geology, locality, coordinates, photographs, sampling information and references.

For archaeology, material provenance matters because raw stone can connect an artifact to trade, movement or a geological source. FlintSource does not magically answer those questions, but it preserves field observations that can help researchers compare materials and locations.

For webmasters, it is another example of durable specialist publishing. The visual design is old. The data model is obvious. The content survives because pages were built around stable facts instead of a stream of posts that immediately disappeared off the front page.

Ancient Web: David Ulansey Put the Cosmic Mysteries of Mithras on One Long Web Page

David Ulansey took a scholarly argument about one of Rome’s strangest mystery religions and put the useful version directly on the Web: long text, archaeological photographs, diagrams, bibliography, and all.

Ulansey is the author of The Origins of the Mithraic Mysteries, published by Oxford University Press in 1991. The web essay identifies itself as an adaptation of his 1994 article Solving the Mithraic Mysteries in Biblical Archaeology Review and as a summary of the larger argument in his book.

That pedigree matters because Mithraism is unusually dependent on interpretation. The religion left abundant physical remains across the Roman world but very little writing from its own believers. Archaeologists have found underground temples, sculptures, paintings, and repeated symbolic scenes, yet the people who used them did not leave us a convenient FAQ.

The central image is the tauroctony: Mithras killing a bull, usually accompanied by a dog, snake, raven, and scorpion. Earlier scholarship, especially the work of Franz Cumont, interpreted Roman Mithraism heavily through supposed Iranian origins. Ulansey’s page walks through why that explanation became contested and then presents the astronomical interpretation developed by later scholars.

Ulansey argues that the animals in the tauroctony correspond to constellations: Taurus, Canis Minor, Hydra, Corvus, and Scorpio. From there he builds his own larger proposal around ancient cosmology and the precession of the equinoxes. The page uses diagrams of the zodiac, celestial equator, cosmic axis, and changing equinoctial positions to make an argument that would be painful to explain with text alone.

It is important to phrase that correctly: this is Ulansey’s scholarly interpretation, not a magic decoder ring that settled every question about Mithraism.

This is what academic outreach looked like before the platform layer

The page is valuable as Web history because it does not reduce the subject to a teaser for a book. It actually gives away the argument.

A reader can move from the basic archaeological problem to competing interpretations, ancient astronomical concepts, iconographic evidence, diagrams, and references without creating an account or navigating an academic publishing system. The page is dense, but it is dense because the subject is dense.

It also retains the construction style of an older scholarly homepage: images placed directly into the argument, long uninterrupted sections, links to related articles, and enough documentation to let an interested reader continue on their own.

Ancient Web: Don’s Maps Is an Archaeology Site Built by Obsession

Don’s Maps is what happens when somebody keeps following the footnotes instead of deciding the research project has gotten big enough.

Don Hitchcock’s site began around an interest in Paleolithic archaeology and maps connected with Jean Auel’s Earth’s Children novels, then expanded outward into an enormous personal reference covering Ice Age sites, cave paintings, Venus figurines, stone tools, human evolution, ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, Australian archaeology, rock art, burials, geology, prehistoric technology, and much more.

The scale is difficult to understand from the homepage alone.

The sitemap is the better clue.

It runs through caves, rock shelters, archaeological sites, tools, decorative objects, extinct animals, hominins, maps, translations, photographs, and long topic pages that often combine historic excavation material with newer scholarship and the author’s own explanations.

This is not a minimalist website.

It is a research desk that escaped into HTML.

Personal websites can become reference institutions

One of the strongest features of Don’s Maps is its dependence on primary and specialist material.

Hitchcock reproduces and discusses old excavation drawings, site plans, museum objects, historic photographs, maps, and scholarly papers. He also translates material that is difficult to find in English and explains on the site that he spends substantial time using dictionaries and translation tools to make otherwise inaccessible research available to readers.

That kind of work is easy to underestimate because it does not arrive wrapped in an institutional interface.

The site looks personal because it is personal.

The useful part is that the person kept going.

Pages on places such as Altamira, Chauvet, Willendorf, Dolní Věstonice, Kostenki, Atapuerca, and many less famous archaeological sites gather images and references that would otherwise require bouncing between museum catalogs, academic papers, scanned books, and unrelated archives.

The project also remains actively maintained. Updates continue to add new photographs, discoveries, corrections, and subject areas decades after the Web stopped rewarding large hand-built reference sites with much visibility.

There is an important distinction here.

Don’s Maps is not automatically authoritative simply because it is enormous. Some material reflects Hitchcock’s own synthesis or interpretation, and individual claims still need to be checked against primary scholarship when accuracy matters.

But that does not reduce the archive’s value.

It makes the site’s real contribution clearer: collection, organization, translation, illustration, and persistence.

The Bronze Age gets much less vague when somebody starts asking exactly how long the spear was.

Andrea Salimbeti’s site focuses on weapons and warfare in the Late Helladic world, roughly 1600 to 1100 BC.

Its pages pull together archaeological finds, pottery, seals, frescoes, Linear B records, literary evidence, and modern reconstructions to examine armour, shields, spears, javelins, bows, chariots, greaves, and other equipment.

The detail can get extremely specific.

One section discusses different chariot designs. Another follows spear types through artistic representations and archaeological points. Armour pages compare bronze cuirasses, scale armour, lighter corselets, greaves, and the famous Dendra-style panoply.

Reconstruction as an argument

The useful thing about a site like this is that a reconstruction is not presented as decoration.

It is an argument built from fragments.

A pottery image may show a shield shape. A grave may preserve bronze hardware. A Linear B tablet may record equipment. Homer may preserve a description whose relationship to archaeological evidence must be handled carefully.

The site brings those categories together and shows how much uncertainty remains.

That makes it more valuable than a generic illustration of “a Mycenaean warrior.”

The reader gets to see why a particular helmet, spear length, shield form, or armour arrangement has been proposed.

The pages are also heavily illustrated with drawings and archaeological examples, and the site was still being updated in 2025 despite retaining a layout that recommends a 1024×768 display.

That sentence alone qualifies it for Ancient Web citizenship.

The Greek Age of Bronze does exactly that.

Ancient Web: Roman Aqueducts Is a Private Engineering Library for 2,000-Year-Old Water Systems

Roman aqueducts are usually reduced to one photograph: a beautiful row of stone arches.

RomanAqueducts.info is interested in everything that happened before and after the arches.

The private site was assembled by enthusiasts including Wilke D. Schram, Cees Passchier, and Driek van Opstal. It contains detailed information on more than 100 selected aqueducts and a literature index covering roughly 600 Roman and some Greek systems.

Then it keeps going.

The plumbing is the interesting part

There are historical and technical introductions, statistics, maps, photographs, bibliographies, aqueducts on Roman coins, distribution basins, siphons, control elements, qanats, gradients, channels, reservoirs, and individual system pages.

One entry for the Cologne aqueduct lists a route around 95 kilometers long, roughly 130 kilometers in total when branches are included, along with cross-section, estimated volume, gradient, and engineering features.

This is why the site works.

The Roman achievement was not “they built arches.” The achievement was surveying a route, finding a usable source, controlling slope, crossing valleys, tunneling through terrain, managing flow, handling maintenance, and delivering water where people needed it.

The authors are also refreshingly clear about uncertainty. The introduction notes that sources can contradict each other and invites corrections, especially where the team has not personally visited a site.

That is better historical practice than pretending the old literature magically agrees.

For webmasters and researchers, the site is another example of what happens when a narrow subject is allowed to become deep instead of broad. A general history site might give Roman aqueducts five paragraphs. This one gives them an ecosystem.
