Vic and Debbie Ceder built the site into a maze of specialized resources: definitions, choreography, callers and cuers, clubs, events, music, lyrics, old calls, frequency counts, flash cards, rotation tools, short sequences, experimental material, software, and enough related utilities to make a newcomer realize that square dancing has approximately twelve thousand more moving parts than expected.

The dates buried inside the individual databases make the site especially interesting. The Callers and Cuers project says it began in October 1999. The Events database started in January 2000. The Music project began in February 2000. The Clubs database followed in 2002. These were not later social-media imports dressed up with retro styling. They are Web databases from the period when PHP and MySQL were becoming the obvious answer to “what if this hobby needs its own information system?”

And apparently square dancing really did.

The music database alone currently describes more than 23,000 records across hundreds of labels, with tens of thousands of sound clips, thousands of cue sheets, and thousands of lyric entries. Many clips were digitized from the site’s own vinyl collection, so the database openly warns that hiss, pops, and clicks are part of the source material.

Other areas preserve old call lists stretching back into the 1990s, searchable definitions at multiple dance levels, event records, caller information, and choreography. That continuity is the interesting part.

A commercial platform would probably split this into profiles, recommendation feeds, paid creator tools, event discovery, music licensing, and six mobile apps. The site’s own statistics page currently reports 13,428 roller coasters, 6,622 amusement parks, 134,204 pictures, and 14,705 videos.

That is a long way from a hobby homepage.

The obsession became infrastructure

Independent coaster references date RCDB to 1996 and credit programmer Duane Marden as its founder. The site’s current about page still credits Marden for programming and lists a large network of researchers, photographers, translators, and other contributors.

Its usefulness comes from restraint.

RCDB separates records from rumor. The database is designed around identifiable rides and parks, with reports for new attractions, records, coaster counts, inversions, and geographic views. Search can be done across coasters, amusement parks, companies, and people.

The result is a reference site that enthusiasts, journalists, researchers, and ordinary people trying to identify some half-remembered ride can all use differently.

It also demonstrates one of the web’s oldest successful patterns: begin with a narrow subject, impose a stable schema on it, and keep adding records until the collection becomes difficult to replace.
