A 644-page U.S. government manual about what nuclear weapons do is not exactly light reading.

The source is the 1977 third edition of The Effects of Nuclear Weapons, compiled and edited by Samuel Glasstone and Philip J. Dolan and published by the U.S. Department of Defense and the Energy Research and Development Administration.

Its chapter list is grimly comprehensive.

General principles. Air and surface bursts. Air blast. Structural loading and damage. Ground shock. Thermal radiation. Initial radiation. Fallout. Radio and radar effects. Electromagnetic pulse. Biological effects.

The preservation work is visible

Fourmilab explains exactly what happened to this edition online.

A Princeton program had scanned the public-domain government publication into bitmap PDF files. That version later became difficult or impossible for the Fourmilab editor to locate. The surviving chapter files also repeated the title material at the beginning of each PDF.

So the files were edited.

Duplicate front matter was removed from individual chapters. The title page, preface, acknowledgements, glossary, SI-unit guide, and index were broken out separately. A new XHTML table of contents was built to make the material usable again.

That is small-scale digital preservation in its purest form: not merely copying files, but repairing the interface around them.

The page even documents a failed attempt to deep-link directly to PDF page numbers because browser/PDF behavior did not work reliably enough.

Alongside the book is an online version of the Nuclear Bomb Effects Computer that accompanied an earlier edition.

Ancient Web: NASA’s StarChild Still Looks Like the Web Taught Astronomy in 1996

NASA’s StarChild is what happens when a major scientific institution builds a children’s astronomy site in 1996 and then leaves enough of the original idea visible for decades.

The site is aimed at young astronomers roughly ages 5 through 13. Its central design decision is simple: Level 1 and Level 2 versions of material about the solar system, the universe, “space stuff,” and a glossary.

That sounds obvious now. On the early web it was a serious attempt to make institutional science material readable by children without flattening everything into one audience.

Built by an outreach team, not a content machine

StarChild identifies itself as a service of NASA Goddard’s High Energy Astrophysics Science Archive Research Center. The site’s project-leader page says Dr. Laura A. Whitlock created StarChild and its older-sibling site, Imagine the Universe!, in 1996 while serving as Education and Outreach Director for Goddard’s Laboratory for High Energy Astrophysics.

The pages include classroom material, printable activities, games, glossaries, graphics, and astronomy explanations at different reading levels. Some activities still include notes for browsers without JavaScript and can simply be printed and completed on paper.

That is a time capsule in itself.

StarChild also accumulated recognition during the early educational-web era. Its project page records a 1998 Webby Award for Best Education Web Site, and an events page lists later educational and family-safety awards.

More interesting than the awards is the survival of the structure.

The site still exposes a hierarchy that assumes a child might enter at the front page, click around by subject, read several pages, try an activity, and follow links deeper into NASA material. There is no feed to refresh and no recommendation engine deciding what comes next.

It is a small curriculum disguised as a website.

World Naval Ships has the energy of somebody who looked at two centuries of naval history and decided the sensible response was to make more hyperlinks.

The site organizes material by major navies including Britain, the United States, Germany, France, Italy, Japan, and Russia, then keeps going through Argentina, Australia, Austria-Hungary, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Denmark, Greece, India, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Turkey, and many more.

Its stated aim is straightforward and enormous: provide information on the world’s naval ships from the nineteenth century onward, with photographs, histories, and paintings where available.

The useful part is the structure

The homepage is not only a country menu.

It exposes side paths into naval losses, merchant-navy losses, ports and harbors, unidentified ships, ocean liners, expeditions, ship-name histories, navy lists, commanders, fleet reviews, battles, and archived forum material.

There is a ship-name search because at this scale browsing alphabetically stops being cute and becomes infrastructure.

The loss pages are particularly revealing. They turn naval history into lists that can be approached by date, conflict, navy, or vessel rather than only through narrative histories. The site also invites help identifying photographs and filling gaps.

That collaborative incompleteness is part of the appeal.

Old specialist sites often show the archive being built instead of pretending the database descended from the sky fully populated.

There is commercial material on the site as well—naval art is part of the operation—but the reference layer is substantial enough to stand on its own.

Ancient Web: The Fell Pony Museum Put a Working Breed on a Timeline

The Fell Pony Museum does not treat the Fell pony as a cute regional horse. It treats the breed as part of the machinery of northern English history.

The site belongs to the Fell Pony and Countryside Museums at Dalemain near Penrith, Cumbria, where physical exhibits are housed in an Elizabethan Great Barn. Online, the Fell Pony section is organized as a historical timeline rather than a conventional breed-information page.

Its navigation begins with Roman Britain and moves through the Dark Ages, Vikings and Normans, monastic history, the fifteenth through eighteenth centuries, the nineteenth century, the twentieth century, and the breed today.

That structure makes sense because the animal was useful before it was collectible.

A horse as transport infrastructure

The museum describes the ponies of the Lake District and Northern England as animals that worked and travelled through the region’s history, noting that the name “Fell pony” has been used since 1853.

The timeline format lets the site connect the breed to changing jobs, landscapes, institutions, and record keeping. Separate sections cover Fell Pony Society archive material, present-day herds, free-roaming ponies, maps, audio, video, and material from physical exhibits.

The parent museum site says its web pages are based on photographs of collected objects in the Great Barn. The countryside section works outward from farmhouse to buildings, fields, and agricultural services, while the pony museum moves through time.

That is a very old-web approach to a museum: the website is not merely opening-hours information for a building. It is another entrance to the collection.

The site says it was first built in December 2000 as a master’s project, rebuilt in December 2008, and is maintained by volunteers. That provenance is visible in the design. It feels like a museum whose labels gradually escaped onto the Internet.

Ancient Web: The Northwest Fighter Kite Association Has Been Plotting World Domination Since 1998

There are hobby websites, and then there are hobby websites that announce they are dedicated to “single line very active controlable kiteflying” and, parenthetically, “World Domination.”

The Northwest Fighter Kite Association is the second kind.

The copyright line starts in 1998. The homepage still points toward a 2006 schedule, past meet reports, flying locations, a Longbeach fighter-kite plan, material related to the Washington State International Kite Festival, a “Fat Kids’ Notebook,” and something called Fighterkite Poe-ums.

There is also a link to newer information elsewhere.

The old page remains.

Good.

A tiny sport gets its own corner of the web

Fighter kites are not the passive diamond-shaped objects people remember from schoolyards.

The NFKA describes its subject as active, controllable single-line flying. Fighter-kite traditions use deliberate manipulation of line tension and kite attitude to steer a lightweight kite through turns, dives, climbs, and competition.

That alone makes the site a useful artifact.

A niche physical skill that would otherwise be transmitted through local clubs, festivals, photocopied plans, and conversation acquired a permanent online home. Meet reports could outlive the meet. A kite plan could travel outside the region. Someone who had never seen the activity could discover that there were enough people doing it to form an association and write poetry about it.

The humor helps too.

Old hobby pages often had a recognizable human voice because there was no incentive to sand every sentence down into brand-safe copy. The NFKA could promote an obscure form of kite flying and joke about world domination on the same homepage.

Ancient Web: National Police Car Archives Is Cataloging Every Cop Car It Can Find

Most vehicle databases begin with makes and models. The National Police Car Archives begins with police departments.

Its stated goal is absurdly large: show law-enforcement vehicles from every agency in the United States. The site says there were 17,541 agencies in its working count from 2018, ranging from villages and major cities to universities, transit systems, parks, railroads, and federal organizations.

The archive currently reports 38,703 photographs representing 9,421 agencies — more than 53 percent of U.S. law-enforcement agencies by its count.

That makes it more than a gallery of Crown Victorias with light bars.

A uniform is also a paint scheme

Police vehicles are unusually good historical objects because local identity gets painted directly onto standardized machinery.

The underlying car may be a Chevrolet, Ford, Dodge, motorcycle, SUV, pickup, or specialty vehicle. What changes is the livery: badges, striping, typography, emergency-light placement, unit numbers, slogans, and the visual language an agency uses to announce itself in traffic.

Collected at national scale, those photographs become a record of municipal design as much as automotive equipment.

The site is arranged geographically and institutionally, with state pages plus sections for federal agencies, railroads, and Washington, D.C. It also maintains a missing-agency list and explicitly asks visitors to contribute photographs.

The archive dates its copyright from 2003 and identifies James Duff as webmaster. In 2026 the front page also describes an ongoing rebuild, which is a familiar problem for long-running personal archives: the collection outlives the software used to maintain it.

That persistence is what makes the site worth noting.

A commercial image search can show thousands of police cars. It does not naturally preserve the question, “Do we have a vehicle from this exact agency yet?”

Tetsuo Kogawa’s transmitter page begins with a question that explains the entire project: why make transmission technology less esoteric?

His answer is basically that radio has interesting possibilities for art.

The page then gets extremely practical.

It includes a simple FM transmitter, component lists, basic tools, step-by-step pictorial instructions, tuning FAQs, antenna information, power-supply notes, TV transmitter designs, and more advanced one-to-three-watt FM material that explicitly warns builders not to proceed without a power meter and frequency counter.

Some schematics are offered as PDF, JPG, symbolic diagrams, and even VRML.

That last format alone dates the web neighborhood nicely.

A workshop that became an archive

The most useful part of the site is that it does not separate electronics from its cultural history.

Kogawa links the technical material to a chronology of transmitter workshops. The page points to an earlier private workshop on June 3, 1990, a first public workshop on April 28, 1991, and a first U.S. workshop at Paper Tiger Television on November 4, 1991.

Video survives alongside the circuit diagrams.

That gives the page a different character from a generic electronics tutorial. The transmitter is not presented merely as a gadget. It is part of a practice: build the device, understand enough radio to operate it, then use transmission as a creative medium.

The page’s construction also belongs to the old technical web. It assumes the visitor is willing to follow diagrams, read theory, acquire tools, solder components, troubleshoot, and learn from linked documents rather than watch a single polished video.

Ancient Web: Contact Consortium Built Virtual-World Community Before ‘Metaverse’ Became Marketing

The Contact Consortium was talking about avatars, shared virtual worlds, online communities, and virtual learning when all of those ideas still sounded like science fiction with a modem attached.

Its old homepage calls the organization “Contact, Culture and Community in Virtual World CyberSpace.” The copyright line begins in 1995, and the surviving page points to conferences held from 1996 through 2004, mailing lists, special-interest groups, publications, projects, and an event calendar that finally stalls in 2006.

This is not a retrospective written after virtual worlds became fashionable.

It is the thing itself.

Cyberspace as a place people might actually live

The projects scattered across the page now read like a catalog of ideas the broader Internet would spend the next few decades rediscovering.

There is VLearn3D for virtual worlds and learning. Biota explores digital biology. TheU experiments with a virtual university. Sherwood Forest is described as a virtual village in cyberspace.

The site links to an avatar reenactment of the Apollo moon landing and documentation of a real virtual wedding.

It also preserves gatherings such as Travatars 2004 and AvaMars, along with architecture and world-design projects.

The terminology is charmingly pre-standardized. “CyberSpace” still gets the capital S treatment. “Avatar Teleport” is presented as an invitation to enter a new cyberspace. The underlying assumption is that online environments are not merely screens to look at; they are places where people might gather, perform, build institutions, hold ceremonies, teach, and form subcultures.

That makes the site useful now.

Modern discussion tends to package these concepts around whichever platform is currently selling them. The Contact Consortium preserves an earlier period when researchers, artists, builders, and enthusiasts were still trying to discover what social virtual worlds were for.

Ancient Web: Glitch Works Repairs Vintage Computers Down to the Board Level

A lot of vintage-computing websites stop at photographs of beautiful old machines.

Glitch Works tends to ask whether the damned thing boots.

The archive covers Digital Equipment Corporation systems, the Intel SDK-80, KIM-1 relatives, Ohio Scientific machines, S-100 hardware, Sun workstations, XT-IDE projects, and a long tail of single-board computers and industrial equipment that rarely gets a museum placard.

The interesting part is the level of intervention.

A Compaq SLT/286 gets its power supply repaired. A Wavemate Bullet that appears to boot CP/M produces nonsense directory listings until bad RAM is traced. A burned AST SixPakPlus has harvested components and physical damage repaired. Old Dallas RTC/NVRAM modules are rebuilt rather than simply declared dead.

Preservation with a soldering iron

The site’s project list reads less like a collector inventory and more like a repair bench that happens to be public.

There are restorations of Kaypro, Ampro, Cromemco, Alspa, Fairchild, Rockwell, and other systems. There are homebrew Z80 projects, recreated interface boards, ROM recovery work, floppy-disk problems, terminal repairs, and notes about networking hardware whose firmware had to survive long enough to make the box useful again.

That distinction matters.

Old hardware does not remain historically interesting merely because a photograph survives. Capacitors leak, batteries die, ROMs disappear, obscure power supplies fail, and interfaces become difficult to reproduce. A repair writeup records the knowledge required to cross the gap between “artifact” and “working computer.”

The archive even hosts a path to the last Walnut Creek CP/M Archive CD-ROM image, uploaded years after its original release. That is the same preservation instinct applied to software.

Ancient Web: Internet Bumper Stickers Let You Paste Opinions Into E-Mail

Before reaction images, share buttons, quote cards, and social-media templates, you could express yourself online by pasting a tiny fake bumper sticker into an e-mail.

That is still the basic idea of Internet Bumper Stickers: downloadable slogan graphics designed to be placed on websites, blogs, e-mail, and any other page where the user can insert an image.

The current front page says the stickers are free and invites visitors to submit their own ideas.

A surviving Ars Technica forum post from January 2001 makes the site’s age clearer. One poster said he had encountered the collection “a couple of years ago” when it still lived at Directtodave.com, and mentioned pasting the stickers into messages to friends.

That puts the concept squarely in the late-1990s personal-web world.

Shareable graphics before sharing became a platform feature

The sticker format solved a tiny problem that modern social networks later absorbed completely.

You had a joke, opinion, complaint, political line, philosophical slogan, or deliberately stupid sentence. You wanted to repeat it visually. Instead of opening an image editor, you browsed a categorized collection, saved the graphic, and pasted it wherever your software allowed.

The site itself still feels designed around that behavior.

There is a sticker search, navigation by theme, contributor credits, and rows of graphics rather than a stream controlled by engagement ranking. The object is the file. The user takes it away.

That distinction matters.

Old web graphics were portable in a very literal sense. Buttons, badges, dividers, animated GIFs, WebRing logos, and tiny slogans migrated from page to page because people copied them. A graphic could escape its original website and circulate for years with no analytics attached and no central service tracking the repost.

Internet Bumper Stickers is a surviving factory for that kind of object.

It is also funny to see the site’s language adapt without losing the old mechanism. It now mentions social media and blogs, but underneath, the system remains: here is an image; put it somewhere.
