The archive covers Digital Equipment Corporation systems, the Intel SDK-80, KIM-1 relatives, Ohio Scientific machines, S-100 hardware, Sun workstations, XT-IDE projects, and a long tail of single-board computers and industrial equipment that rarely gets a museum placard.
The interesting part is the level of intervention.
A Compaq SLT/286 gets its power supply repaired. A Wavemate Bullet that appears to boot CP/M produces nonsense directory listings until bad RAM is traced. A burned AST SixPakPlus has harvested components and physical damage repaired. Old Dallas RTC/NVRAM modules are rebuilt rather than simply declared dead.
Preservation with a soldering iron
The site’s project list reads less like a collector inventory and more like a repair bench that happens to be public.
There are restorations of Kaypro, Ampro, Cromemco, Alspa, Fairchild, Rockwell, and other systems. There are homebrew Z80 projects, recreated interface boards, ROM recovery work, floppy-disk problems, terminal repairs, and notes about networking hardware whose firmware had to survive long enough to make the box useful again.
That distinction matters.
Old hardware does not remain historically interesting merely because a photograph survives. Capacitors leak, batteries die, ROMs disappear, obscure power supplies fail, and interfaces become difficult to reproduce. A repair writeup records the knowledge required to cross the gap between “artifact” and “working computer.”
The archive even hosts a path to the last Walnut Creek CP/M Archive CD-ROM image, uploaded years after its original release. That is the same preservation instinct applied to software.
CacheRat’s 1,967 Ancient Web Domains research list includes many technical personal sites because this kind of hands-on documentation often survives nowhere else.
Glitch Works is especially useful because the author does not treat vintage computers as untouchable relics.
They are machines.
Machines can be diagnosed.
And sometimes a $10 board that looks like somebody attacked it with a blowtorch can still be fixed.
