Ancient Web: Ark Two Buried 42 School Buses Under Concrete for the End of the World

There are old survivalist websites, and then there is Ark Two: a site built around a 10,000-square-foot Ontario fallout shelter whose concrete structure used forty-two school buses as permanent forms.

The site’s own description is remarkably direct. Ark Two presents itself as a pluralistic survival community intended to help people endure a nuclear war or other catastrophic event and participate in rebuilding afterward. The shelter is in Ontario, Canada, and the site openly provides photographs, maps and a project history rather than treating the location like a secret bunker in a spy novel.

The construction photographs are the obvious draw. According to the site, forty-two school buses were arranged and then encased in concrete before being covered by roughly five to fourteen feet of earth. Interior pages show rooms, corridors and a map substantial enough that the site’s author jokes, in effect, that occupants need navigation once inside.

But Ark Two is larger than the shelter page. Its navigation branches into survival, technical recovery, reconstruction and what it calls renewal. The worldview assumes that the catastrophe has happened and then asks what a community would need afterward: organization, practical knowledge, infrastructure and social continuity.

Whether a reader shares the site’s assumptions is almost beside the point for Internet archaeology. What survives here is a complete example of pre-social-media preparedness culture publishing its plans directly to the public. The site is not a listicle about emergency kits. It is somebody’s actual decades-long project, documented with photographs of concrete, buses, rooms, maps and physical construction.

It is also a reminder that old personal sites often mixed practical information with very strong personal convictions without separating everything into clean categories. The architecture of the website mirrors the architecture of the project: links branch into whatever the builder believed civilization might require.

For researchers looking at survivalism, Cold War afterlives or early preparedness culture online, that makes the site useful primary material. For everyone else, forty-two buses under concrete is a sufficient reason to click.

Ancient Web: Fourmilab Rebuilt a 1977 Nuclear-Weapons Manual Into a Web Index

A 644-page U.S. government manual about what nuclear weapons do is not exactly light reading.

The source is the 1977 third edition of The Effects of Nuclear Weapons, compiled and edited by Samuel Glasstone and Philip J. Dolan and published by the U.S. Department of Defense and the Energy Research and Development Administration.

Its chapter list is grimly comprehensive.

General principles. Air and surface bursts. Air blast. Structural loading and damage. Ground shock. Thermal radiation. Initial radiation. Fallout. Radio and radar effects. Electromagnetic pulse. Biological effects.

The preservation work is visible

Fourmilab explains exactly what happened to this edition online.

A Princeton program had scanned the public-domain government publication into bitmap PDF files. That version later became difficult or impossible for the Fourmilab editor to locate. The surviving chapter files also repeated the title material at the beginning of each PDF.

So the files were edited.

Duplicate front matter was removed from individual chapters. The title page, preface, acknowledgements, glossary, SI-unit guide, and index were broken out separately. A new XHTML table of contents was built to make the material usable again.

That is small-scale digital preservation in its purest form: not merely copying files, but repairing the interface around them.

The page even documents a failed attempt to deep-link directly to PDF page numbers because browser/PDF behavior did not work reliably enough.

Alongside the book is an online version of the Nuclear Bomb Effects Computer that accompanied an earlier edition.

Ancient Web: JProc Preserves the Strange History of TEMPEST

Computers can leak secrets without sending a packet.

The page collects material about compromising emanations: unintended electromagnetic or acoustic signals from information-processing equipment that can reveal what the machine is doing.

The history is wonderfully strange.

A declassified NSA account traces the problem back to World War II, when Bell Telephone engineers discovered that encrypted teletype equipment was radiating patterns correlated with the plaintext being processed. In a demonstration across the street from a Signal Corps crypto center, engineers were reportedly able to reconstruct much of the message from the leaked signal.

The machine was secure. The room was talking.

That is the conceptual punch of TEMPEST.

A cryptographic system can be mathematically strong while the hardware implementing it leaks information through a completely different channel.

The page follows the subject through Cold War countermeasures, intelligence collection, shielding standards, and later public research into display emissions. It also points to Wim van Eck’s 1985 work showing that information from computer monitors could be reconstructed with comparatively inexpensive equipment.

The site is not itself a modern security standard or operational guide. Its value is historical: it connects wartime teletype equipment, classified shielding programs, declassified NSA material, Cold War espionage, and the eventual public understanding that electronic devices radiate more than engineers intend.

That history matters because side-channel attacks are now a normal security concept. Timing, power use, sound, electromagnetic emissions, and other physical behavior can all betray information even when the cryptography is sound.

Old pages like this preserve how surprising that idea once seemed.
