Most disappearing roadside architecture does not get a preservation committee. It gets photographed by Debra Jane Seltzer before somebody tears it down.

Seltzer’s site is enormous: more than 3,500 pages and roughly 75,000 photographs of American buildings, signs and statues, with most of the material focused on things surviving from the 1920s through the 1970s.

The big sections include mid-century modern buildings, gas stations, eateries, roadside signs, movie theatres, drive-ins, car showrooms, Greyhound stations, five-and-dime stores, tiki architecture, Art Deco, Streamline Moderne, dinosaurs, Paul Bunyans, giant animals, giant food, mini golf and an impressive amount of architecture designed to make a passing motorist say, “What the hell is that?”

That is an excellent archival category.

The site documents ordinary landmarks before they become memories

RoadsideArchitecture.com works because it treats commercial vernacular as something worth recording before anyone decides it is historic.

A neon motel sign can disappear because the business closes. A tiny gas station can become an office. A giant fiberglass animal can move three states away. A drive-in marquee can be repainted until nobody remembers what it looked like before.

Seltzer records those changes over time.

Individual pages often include multiple photographs taken years apart, notes on changing businesses, restoration work, demolished structures, old branding, architectural styles and links to related historical material. Her Rhode Island gas-station pages, for example, track former stations as their uses and appearances change. Other sections document the survival or removal of specific signs city by city.

That temporal layer matters.

A single photograph says what something looked like. A page updated over twenty years can show what happened to it.

Seltzer says she has been working on the site for more than two decades and continues adding photos and updating descriptions regularly. She also turned the sign research into the 2018 book Vintage Signs of America.

The site itself is refreshingly stubborn. It remains a giant hand-built subject tree rather than collapsing 75,000 images into an endless social feed. You can browse by state, category, building type or odd roadside object and actually understand where you are.

For researchers, that creates an absurd amount of long-tail search material: obscure business names, vanished neon signs, former gas stations, theatre marquees, tiki buildings, giant fiberglass figures, roadside attractions and architectural styles that rarely receive dedicated pages elsewhere.

Ancient Web: Citroënët Has Been Explaining Hydropneumatic Suspension Since 1995

Citroën spent decades putting high-pressure hydraulics into cars, and Julian Marsh spent decades making sure somebody on the Web explained what all those spheres, pumps and green fluid were actually doing.

Citroënët dates back to 1995, when Marsh was helping build the Citroën Car Club website and realized he had enough material to create a separate site of his own. It began with a single reprinted article about the D Sport and eventually expanded into several thousand pages covering production cars, prototypes, concepts, commercial vehicles, books, memorabilia, articles and technical material.

The hydraulic section is one of the best examples of why that kind of enthusiast archive matters.

It gathers brochures, diagrams, historical articles and explanations covering the Traction Avant 15CV H, DS19, GS, GSA, SM, CX, BX, XM, Xantia, Hydractive systems and Citroën’s high-pressure hydraulic philosophy in general.

The system is strange until somebody explains the gas and fluid

Citroën’s hydropneumatic suspension uses a compressible gas as the springing medium and hydraulic fluid to transmit force, provide damping and control vehicle height.

An engine-driven pump pressurizes the system. Spheres containing nitrogen and hydraulic fluid replace conventional steel springs. Because the gas compresses while the fluid effectively does not, the system can provide extremely soft springing while self-leveling compensates for passengers and cargo.

That sounds complicated until the diagrams and descriptions walk through it.

The same high-pressure system could also power other functions. On cars such as the DS, hydraulics were used for suspension, braking, steering, clutch operation and gearchange. Later systems added electronic control through Hydractive suspension, while the Xantia Activa famously used hydraulic control to attack body roll.

Citroënët does not pretend the design was magic. The site also discusses drawbacks: low-speed harshness, road noise, pitching, motion sickness for some occupants and the odd behavior that can occur when height correction reacts to certain road shapes.

That balance is useful. Enthusiast sites are at their best when enthusiasm produces documentation rather than worship.

The archive is also a reminder of how durable subject-specific publishing can be. Citroënët began before Citroën itself had a website, according to Marsh, and the site has continued accumulating material across three decades of automotive and web history.

A modern owner searching for LHM hydraulics, Hydractive 3, DIRAVI steering, DS clutchless gearchange or Xantia Activa suspension can still land on a hand-built enthusiast site from the first years of the commercial Web.

Ancient Web: BCpl8s.ca Turned a 1999 Graduate Assignment Into 5,000 License-Plate Images

A graduate-history assignment in 1999 somehow turned into more than 5,000 license-plate images and about 250 pages of British Columbia transportation history.

Christopher Garrish tells the origin story himself.

While taking a Canadian-history course at the University of Saskatchewan in 1999, students were assigned to build a web page related to their thesis work. Garrish liked the exercise, but quickly realized his growing license-plate collection would make a more interesting website.

On November 20, 1999, he started building the pages that eventually became BCpl8s.ca.

For its first two years the project lived on Angelfire. In late 2001 his brother registered the BCpl8s.ca domain as a Christmas gift, and the site moved to a Netfirms account so it could escape the advertising that came with free hosting.

The domain went live in January 2002.

The basic design has barely changed since.

A collector site became a historical archive

BCpl8s.ca covers passenger plates, motorcycles, commercial trucks, dealers, farms, government vehicles, veterans, ham radio operators, national parks, temporary permits, prototypes, Expo 86, Olympic plates, consular plates, chauffeur badges, driver’s licences and plenty of categories normal people did not know existed.

The site says it now contains more than 5,000 images and roughly 250 pages.

More important than the count is where the information came from.

Garrish describes spending years pulling material from microfilm, newspapers, the BC Archives and Motor Vehicle Branch files. Collectors contributed photographs, stories and access to private collections. Former Motor Vehicle Branch staff provided institutional knowledge that was never going to appear on the back of a plate.

The site’s history page is also a small lesson in old-Web production problems.

Early license plates were scanned on flatbed scanners too short to capture a full 12-inch North American plate. Sometimes that meant making two scans and stitching them together. Another method was shooting plates on 35mm film, developing the photos, and then scanning the photographs.

Storage was another problem. A Netfirms account offered only 50 MB, so Garrish converted JPEGs to smaller GIF files to make the collection fit.

By 2019, he estimated the site occupied about 9.24 GB.

That growth curve is almost a history of consumer web hosting by itself.

The archive now documents British Columbia plates from 1904 to the present, and the homepage celebrated 25 years online in 2024.

Ancient Web: Coolspring Documented a 25-Ton Otto Engine One Page at a Time

A 25-ton single-cylinder engine deserves more than one photograph and a caption saying “old engine.”

Coolspring Power Museum gave its 175-horsepower Otto gas engine the opposite treatment: a multi-page technical feature documenting the machine, its pumping equipment, its history and its preservation.

The engine spent most of its working life at the Brookville Water Works in Pennsylvania driving a Deane triplex water pump. The pair eventually left the water works, changed hands, and ended up installed at Coolspring’s Power Technology Building.

The numbers make the scale clear.

The Otto weighs about 25 tons. Its Deane pump weighs another 20. The engine has a 21-inch bore, a 30-inch stroke and a displacement of 10,391 cubic inches—roughly 170 liters from one cylinder.

Its nameplate rating is 175 horsepower at only 180 RPM.

That works out to more than 5,100 foot-pounds of torque.

Industrial machinery becomes understandable when somebody records the specifications

The Deane pump is a substantial machine in its own right, with three 14-inch-bore cylinders and a 12-inch stroke. Driven by the Otto, the setup could deliver about 1.5 million gallons of water per day.

Coolspring’s write-up also places the engine inside a larger preservation story. Brookville’s water works continued using large stationary machinery well into the modern era, and other engines from the facility—including a Cooper Bessemer and a Fairbanks-Morse set—were later preserved as part of the museum collection.

This is exactly why small museum websites matter.

A general industrial-history page might say that large stationary gas engines once powered municipal systems. Coolspring gives you bore, stroke, displacement, speed, pump dimensions, ownership history and the name of the water works where the machine actually earned its keep.

Those details are what make the object researchable.

They are also search terms almost nobody writes about casually: Deane triplex pump, Otto 175 hp gas engine, Brookville Water Works, 21-inch bore, 180 RPM.

That specificity is what turns an old museum page into useful infrastructure for restorers, collectors, engineers and historians.

Ancient Web: Tramway Information Turned Model Trams Into a Technical Reference Library

Model railway people are thorough. Model tramway people somehow found a way to become even more specific.

Tramway Information is a specialist site covering both full-size tramways and model trams, with a particularly deep collection of material for people who actually build the miniature versions.

The homepage is almost aggressively simple. From there, though, the site fans out into track gauges, scales, manufacturers, parts, overhead equipment, kits, construction articles, exhibition reports, historic postcards and downloadable technical material.

It also connects directly to the Tramway & Light Railway Society and the long-running Festival of Model Tramways.

That combination makes the site more than a hobby gallery.

It is a working reference library.

When scale becomes engineering

One of the best pages is a table of model tram track gauges.

It compares full-size standard and narrow gauges with model standards ranging from large ride-on scales down through 1:16, G, O, OO, HO, TT and N. The page does the arithmetic that matters to builders: model gauge, scale ratio, equivalent full-size gauge and the prototype gauge each combination is trying to represent.

That is the point where “tiny tram” stops being a toy description and becomes a geometry problem.

Other pages document parts suppliers, motor units, overhead components, card and metal construction, destination blinds, trolley poles and photographic finishing techniques. The site also republishes older specialist articles in digital form, including material originally written in the early 2000s for tram-modeling publications.

The historical side is just as useful. A postcard page about Birmingham steam trams, for example, identifies routes, operators, rolling stock, builders, gauge and the end of steam operation in 1906. Exhibition reports preserve the layouts, builders and modeling techniques shown at Festival of Model Tramways events.

The result is the sort of reference that becomes more valuable as specialist print runs disappear and small manufacturers come and go.

A modern search for a specific model-tram gauge or an obscure Raworth demi-car kit can easily lead to scattered forum posts and expired product pages. Tramway Information keeps the surrounding context together.

Ancient Web: The Cariboo Gold Rush Froze a 1998 SchoolNet History Project in Place

Some old educational websites accidentally preserved two histories at once: the history they were teaching and the history of how the early Web tried to teach it.

The Cariboo Gold Rush is a surviving Canadian digital-history project produced through Industry Canada’s SchoolNet Digital Collections program. The site was built to make British Columbia archival photographs, documents, maps and other historical material easier for school-age students to use.

Its own project history describes multiple phases of development beginning with a narrower site called The Cariboo Wagon Road – The Gold Rush Trail. Later phases expanded it into a much larger resource covering the wagon road, roadhouses, transportation, historical figures, Barkerville, maps, arts and culture, classroom material, interactive games and primary sources.

One phase even added a QuickTime clip of gold miners panning for gold at the Royal British Columbia Museum.

You could hardly ask for a more 1998 sentence.

The archive underneath the classroom design is the real prize

The strongest surviving material comes from the BC Archives.

A primary-source section points readers toward diaries, journals, letters, memoirs, mining certificates, land records and other documents tied to people who lived through the Cariboo era. Elsewhere, the site includes archival photographs, historical maps, timelines and material on travel through the Fraser River and Cariboo regions.

The project also documented the role of the Cariboo Wagon Road and the roadhouses that supported traffic through the interior of British Columbia.

Its historical overview places the Fraser River gold rush in 1858 and the later Cariboo rush around 1862, when miners pushed farther inland and Barkerville grew around Billy Barker’s strike on Williams Creek.

The site is especially useful today because it preserves the educational packaging around all of that source material. This was before every school project became a video platform, LMS module or app. A public website could simply expose the archive, build maps around it, add a teacher’s corner and let students click around.

The about page still identifies Carollyne Yardley and Industrial Art Internet Group Ltd. and records a March 1999 update. The broader site carries a 1998–2002 copyright trail.

That makes it a web artifact in its own right.

Ancient Web: Polarization.com Built a Science Museum Around Invisible Light

Polarized light is everywhere, but most people spend their entire lives looking straight through it without realizing there is another layer of information in the scene.

Polarization.com exists for the people who would prefer to notice.

The site is an old-style science museum built around one property of light. Its navigation jumps between rainbows, honeybees, insects, octopuses, Viking sunstones, sunglasses, liquid-crystal displays, photography, the human eye, Edwin Land, polarization compasses, space, art, stress patterns, molten metal and experiments you can do with inexpensive filters.

That range is the fun of it.

A modern educational site would probably divide those subjects into different departments. Polarization.com treats them as different doors into the same phenomenon.

A technical subject becomes much easier when it keeps touching ordinary life

One page traces the history of polarization through Iceland spar, Erasmus Bartholinus, Christiaan Huygens, Isaac Newton, Thomas Young, Étienne-Louis Malus, David Brewster, François Arago and Augustin Fresnel.

The history gets surprisingly concrete.

Bartholinus described double refraction in Iceland spar in 1669. Huygens experimented with rotated crystals. Malus noticed polarization in reflected sunlight. Brewster tied the polarizing angle to refractive index. Fresnel helped establish the transverse-wave explanation that made polarization fit the wave theory of light.

Then the site turns around and asks what any of that has to do with a beetle, a pair of sunglasses or an animal navigating under a blue sky.

That is good science writing.

The subject stays technical without being sealed inside a textbook.

The homepage even frames polarization as something an amateur can explore cheaply. You do not need a particle accelerator to begin seeing it. A sheet of polarizing film, an LCD screen or the reflection from water can get you started.

For the Web itself, this is another example of why specialist educational sites age well. The visual design can remain basic because the site’s real structure is conceptual. Each page answers a specific question and links sideways into another related curiosity.

Search engines are also unusually bad at surfacing this kind of cross-disciplinary material. Somebody looking for the Viking sunstone, Brewster’s angle, insect polarization vision or why rainbows can be polarized may never realize those topics belong in the same archive.

Ancient Web: Side Blown Technologies Still Hand-Builds Bamboo Flutes on a Plain HTML Site

Some specialist websites are basically workshops with an HTML front door.

David Chu’s Side Blown Technologies is one of them. The site is devoted to handmade wooden flutes, bamboo flutes, grenadilla headjoints, bamboo headjoints, carbon-fiber headjoints, flute overhaul, cases, and the little technical decisions that determine whether an instrument feels good in somebody’s hands.

The current homepage was still being updated in August 2026, but visually and structurally the site remains wonderfully direct: a heading, a short list of things Chu makes, and links into individual pages.

No lifestyle branding department appears to have been consulted.

Good.

The useful material is in the details

Chu’s bamboo-flute page explains why he started making his own instruments in the first place. Commercial bamboo flutes he encountered were often the wrong size, wrong key, or not pitched at A=440, so he began experimenting.

The resulting page gets specific quickly.

Small flutes around 10 to 11 inches are built in keys such as C, D and E. Mid-size flutes around 16 to 17 inches cover E through A. Bass instruments stretch from roughly 20 to 26 inches, with even larger versions extending beyond 36 inches.

He discusses six-hole and four-hole designs, cross-fingering, half-hole technique, modal scales, offset finger holes, large finger holes for greater dynamics, and the importance of binding bamboo to reduce cracking as humidity changes.

One tunable design is explicitly based on Theobald Boehm’s 1847 flute innovations.

That is why this kind of site remains useful. A generic page about “bamboo flutes” can explain what one is. A maker’s page tells you what problems actually show up at the bench: pitch standards, bore size, finger reach, cracking, hole placement and how an instrument changes when you scale it up.

The same site also covers wooden and carbon-fiber headjoints for modern Boehm flutes and practical overhaul work. It sits in that old-Web category where commercial activity and technical documentation were never cleanly separated. The person selling the object was also the person explaining how it worked.

For researchers and webmasters, there is another lesson here. A specialist site does not need a giant content system when its information architecture is obvious and the pages themselves contain the value.

Ancient Web: Kenneth Kuhn Built a 450-Piece Hewlett-Packard Test Equipment Museum

There are company-history sites, and then there is the electrical engineer who accumulated more than 450 pieces of vintage Hewlett-Packard test equipment and built his own museum around them.

Kenneth A. Kuhn’s site is an unusually dense archive of Hewlett-Packard’s original test-and-measurement world: oscillators, meters, generators, manuals, catalogs, journals, restoration information, historical essays, employee memoirs, and links into the larger network of people preserving HP history.

Kuhn says his collection contains more than 450 pieces, roughly 100 of them duplicates. Named examples include the HP200A, HP200B, HP200C, HP200D, HP200H, HP201B, HP202D, HP410A and HP500A, plus one of the surviving HP210A square-wave generators.

These are not decorative props. Kuhn is an analog electronics engineer who used Hewlett-Packard equipment professionally, studied its manuals, reverse-engineered its design ideas, and later taught some of those lessons to engineering students.

That changes the character of the site completely.

A museum where the manuals matter as much as the metal

The strongest part of the archive is that it does not stop at photographs of old instruments.

There are pages on dating vintage equipment, scans of manuals and documents, HP catalogs, HP Journals, restoration, early company locations, the original garage at 367 Addison Avenue, Bill Hewlett and David Packard, and the transition from Hewlett-Packard test equipment to Agilent Technologies and later Keysight Technologies.

Kuhn also links outward aggressively. He explicitly says he wants HP-history websites interlinked so that somebody finding one resource can reach the others.

That is an old-Web instinct worth preserving.

Instead of trying to become the only authority, the site behaves like a node in a specialist research network.

There is also a wonderfully human detail buried near the top: Kuhn’s shop cat Frisky appears beside an early HP200B and is identified as the official shop cat. The equipment is serious. The museum does not have to pretend the person maintaining it disappeared.

The page was still being revised in June 2026, more than two decades after the site’s copyright trail begins in 2003.

For a modern researcher, that longevity matters. Model numbers such as HP200A, HP210A, HP3580A or HP805C are exactly the kind of technical search terms that disappear inside generic corporate history pages but remain useful to collectors, restorers and engineers.

Ancient Web: Seinfeld Online Survived the 1990s Fan Web and Three Hosting Eras

Long before a television fandom meant a subreddit, a wiki, a Discord server, six social accounts, and somebody fighting over canon on TikTok, it could mean one person made a website.

Greg Leedberg’s surviving site history places Seinfeld Online in the earliest years of his personal Web work. He began publishing online in 1995, originally using the one megabyte of web space included with his America Online account. After building a Mortal Kombat page, he created a Seinfeld fan site and later moved his growing collection of pages to SimpleNet in 1996.

Eventually the whole operation migrated again to Leedberg.com.

Seinfeld Online came along for the ride.

Leedberg says the fan site has not been actively updated in many years but remains online because people continue to visit it. That may be the most Ancient Web sentence possible.

Old fan sites were handmade indexes of enthusiasm

The importance of a site like this is not that it can compete with a modern streaming service or encyclopedia for basic episode information.

It cannot, and it does not need to.

Its value is that it preserves how television fandom was organized on the mid-1990s Web. A webmaster selected what deserved a page, assembled links and information manually, maintained navigation, paid attention to traffic, and carried the whole collection from host to host when the surrounding Internet changed.

Leedberg’s own hosting history is almost as interesting as the subject. AOL’s one-megabyte allowance became too small, so he moved to SimpleNet, which advertised unlimited disk space and bandwidth for ten dollars a month. When SimpleNet was later absorbed into Yahoo!, he registered Leedberg.com in 2000. In 2005 the site moved again, this time to DreamHost.

That sequence is a miniature history of independent web publishing.

The fan site survived not because a platform promised permanent preservation, but because its owner kept copying the files forward.

This is exactly the kind of context that makes CacheRat’s 1,967 Ancient Web Domains research list more useful than a directory of random old URLs. A surviving page can document the television show on its surface while also preserving hosting economics, fan culture, personal publishing, and the habits of early webmasters underneath.

The show ended in 1998.

The fan page apparently did not get the memo.
