Ancient Web: A Red Dwarf Fan Site Froze Itself in 2005

A television fan site that stopped updating in 2005 can sometimes tell you more about early Web fandom than a modern wiki with ten thousand perfectly standardized pages.

The site identifies itself as a 2003 fan project and gives its last update as October 8, 2005. It is devoted to the British science-fiction comedy Red Dwarf, and it organizes the show the way personal fan sites often did: by character, episode, script, song, running joke and whatever else the webmaster thought deserved its own page.

There are dedicated pages for Lister, Rimmer, Cat, Kryten, Holly and Kochanski. There is a script index spanning multiple seasons, a collection of Space Corps directives, music pages and references to specific bits from individual episodes.

In other words, it is a fan database before fandom databases all started looking the same.

Before the wiki template, somebody chose the categories

That human choice is what makes old fan sites interesting now.

A wiki tends to normalize information. Every character gets the same fields. Every episode gets the same infobox. That is useful, but it can erase the personality of the person who cared enough to build the thing.

The site is also very useful as a dated artifact. Its copyright notice says 2003. Its last-update line says 2005. The HTML, image-driven layout and email-first contact model all reinforce the period without anybody needing to fake a retro aesthetic.

There is an entire kind of old website built around the sentence, “I know a lot about this one thing, so I made a diagram.” Look Out Now!’s 3D cutaway of a tobacco pipe is a nearly perfect specimen.

The page breaks a pipe into its practical parts: chamber, shank, airhole, grain and stem. It explains why the airhole should meet the chamber near the bottom, why straight grain is prized, and why stems made from vulcanite and lucite behave differently.

The useful part is not just the definitions. The page is clearly written by somebody who has handled, smoked, designed and thought about pipes enough to notice the differences that generic reference material skips.

Hobby pages preserved expertise before everyone became a content creator

Look Out Now! is much broader than this one article. Its old text index links to homemade JavaScript experiments, online games, chess material, Mancala, MiniGOLF, travel writing and an extensive pipe-and-tobacco section. The pipe pages include makers such as Mark Tinsky and Maurizio Tombari, natural briar finishes, design experiments and 3D-rendered pipe concepts.

That range is aggressively personal. There is no attempt to establish a coherent media brand. It is simply one person’s interests occupying adjacent directories.

The anatomy page is especially good Ancient Web material because the illustration does real explanatory work. A cutaway lets the reader see the relationship between the bowl, air passage and mouthpiece instead of reading a glossary in isolation. The accompanying text adds maker-level details: carbonizing can conceal flaws, longer shanks are sometimes believed to improve the smoke, and briar grain has both aesthetic and perceived quality implications.

Ancient Web: WhoZoo Preserved Student-Written Animal Pages from the Early Web

WhoZoo looks like somebody left a school computer lab in 2003, forgot to close the browser, and came back more than twenty years later to discover the animal pages still worked.

The site describes itself as “Images and Information about Animals at the Fort Worth Zoo” while carefully stating that it is not a publication of the Fort Worth Zoo. Its homepage was last marked updated in April 2003, and the rest of the project spreads outward through hand-built indexes for mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish and invertebrates.

A large part of the material consists of student-written species accounts. Those pages typically combine scientific names, range, habitat, diet, physical description, behavior, adaptations, source lists and personal observations made at the zoo.

That final category is what gives the archive personality.

The student observation survived with the species facts

A spotted-gar page does not merely describe the fish’s elongated snout and camouflage. The student author records that the gar looked almost like a miniature alligator while feeding and seemed unhurried until food appeared. A sandhill-crane page notes the birds’ tentative walking and reactions to noise. Other pages document iguanas, rhinos, tigers, cockroaches and dozens of species with the unmistakable structure of an educational assignment that escaped the classroom and became public reference material.

WhoZoo also preserves the design habits of the period. Navigation is built from image galleries and text links. Pages warn about loading times. The homepage proudly carries old Web-directory and “Java Enhanced” badges.

It also shows what can happen when an old site outlives active maintenance. The current front page contains unrelated spam links appended beneath the original material. The educational pages themselves remain available, but the contamination is a useful preservation lesson: keeping a domain online is not the same thing as keeping it healthy.

For researchers, WhoZoo has value beyond zoology. It is evidence of how teachers and students used public Web publishing before learning-management systems swallowed most school work behind logins. Names, observations, source lists and dated page structures remain visible to anyone.

Ancient Web: The NYIT Computer Graphics Lab Preserved the Images Before Pixar

A page full of 640×480 JPEGs can be more important than a glossy retrospective when those JPEGs show computer graphics before the vocabulary for half the techniques had settled down.

Paul Heckbert’s surviving page collects pictures and names from the New York Institute of Technology Computer Graphics Lab, one of the places where a remarkable group of researchers and artists pushed 3D graphics forward during the late 1970s and early 1980s.

The centerpiece is material from The Works, an ambitious computer-animated film project begun long before feature-length CGI became commercially practical. The page bluntly notes that fragments of the history survive but that the full story was never written.

That makes the images do a lot of work.

A gallery of techniques before they became menu options

The archive includes work by Lance Williams, Dick Lundin, Ned Greene, Rebecca Allen, Thad Beier, Pat Hanrahan, Jules Bloomenthal, Peter Oppenheimer, Paul Heckbert and others. Some names later became deeply embedded in computer graphics research and production.

The captions are especially valuable because they identify both the image and the technique. A 1983 RGB histogram of Franz Marc’s Blue Horses is described as scientific visualization by volume rendering with splatting, before those terms were widely used. Another image demonstrates ray tracing with soft shadows. A 1982 surface is described as using what would later be called the marching-cubes algorithm. There are Gouraud and Phong shading comparisons, algebraic surfaces, polygonized isosurfaces and early character models.

The page also preserves less formal context: group photos, the buildings where people worked and lived, and links asking where former NYIT lab members ended up.

This is the kind of material that gets flattened when computing history is retold as a sequence of products. The interesting work existed before the final commercial packaging. Researchers were experimenting with shading, rendering, animation and visualization while the hardware was still painfully limited and a 245 KB image was a high-resolution download.

The useful thing about an old car website is not that it looks old. It is that the discontinued part number you need may still be sitting in a paragraph somebody wrote twenty years ago.

Pontiac Performance.NET is a personal automotive site built around years of owning, repairing, modifying and collecting cars and parts. Its owner notes that the basic structure is more than twenty years old and that some broken links remain after a move from Windows hosting to Linux. Rather than hide that, the site keeps the old material online while continuing to add pieces when time allows.

That is exactly the right instinct for a technical archive.

The site’s repair material ranges well beyond Pontiac. There are sections for the Pontiac Fiero, Crown Victoria and Grand Marquis, Oldsmobile, Cadillac, Porsche and other vehicles. The articles mix formal procedures with the more useful category of information often labeled “lessons learned.”

Repair knowledge ages differently than car marketing

The Fiero Online Service Guide is the strongest example. It indexes troubleshooting for charging systems, cruise control, cooling, starting, manual and automatic transaxles, ECM components, sensors, suspension, brakes, body panels, engine removal and dozens of other jobs.

It also preserves specific data such as wheel sizes, offsets, GM part numbers and model-year differences. A stock-wheel reference, for example, lists wheel codes, dimensions, colors, offsets and part numbers for multiple Fiero years. Elsewhere the site records discontinued Ford pieces that can still be found in junkyards or swap meets.

That distinction matters. A manufacturer stops supporting a model when the business case disappears. Owners do not stop needing to know which sensor failed, which bracket fits or whether a later factory part can be adapted to an earlier car.

Pontiac Performance explicitly warns that many parts mentioned in old articles are no longer produced. Instead of deleting those references, it leaves them in place because the information still helps somebody hunting used parts.

Ancient Web: Historic Memphis Rebuilt the 1897 Tennessee Centennial in Photographs

Historic Memphis has a page about a building that was designed to disappear in 1897, and somehow the webpage may outlive several generations of supposedly more permanent media about it.

The page reconstructs the Tennessee Centennial and International Exposition held in Nashville from May through October 1897. The fair celebrated Tennessee’s centennial as a state, drew roughly 1.7 million visitors and filled Centennial Park with temporary exhibition buildings devoted to machinery, agriculture, transportation, commerce and spectacle.

Historic Memphis focuses especially on the Memphis-Shelby County exhibit. To make the city’s identity unmistakable, organizers built an Egyptian-style pyramid pavilion. The structure was wood and plaster, like much of the fair, and was demolished afterward.

Memphis, naturally, would eventually build another pyramid.

A handmade page can become a serious visual index

The strength of this old-fashioned historical page is the pile of specific material it gathers into one place. There are photographs of the exposition grounds, the Memphis pyramid, the Parthenon, exhibition interiors, electric lighting, streetcars and crowds. There are also tickets, season passes, programs, posters, souvenir cards, medals, coins and sheet music.

The page records details that make the event easier to picture. Adult admission was 50 cents and children’s admission was 25 cents. Congress authorized $100,000 for federal participation. The U.S. Mint exhibit struck souvenir medals. President William McKinley opened the exposition remotely by pressing an electric button in the White House that triggered a relay to Nashville and fired a cannon.

The surviving Parthenon is itself a preservation story. The exposition version was meant to be temporary, but local attachment to it eventually led Nashville to reconstruct the building in permanent materials.

Historic Memphis is transparent about the limitations of its own archive. The site notes that many images are low resolution, credits libraries and local collections, and points researchers toward original photographers or collectors when higher-quality material is needed.

That honesty is useful. The page is not pretending to be a formal museum database. It is a community-built historical index with enough labels, names and visual clues to send a researcher somewhere productive.

Ancient Web: Ruben’s SimTower Page Kept the Cheats for a Vertical City Alive

Before every old game had a wiki, somebody had to discover that holding Ctrl, Alt and Shift while placing a lobby in SimTower could make the lobby three stories tall, then build a webpage so everyone else could know it too.

The surviving site is exactly that sort of page. It is a compact fan resource for Maxis and OpenBook’s skyscraper-management game, full of practical hints about tower ratings, elevators, hotel infestations, staircases, tenant complaints and the strange little keyboard combinations players learned by experimentation or passed around online.

One surviving cheats page explains how Ctrl and Alt create a two-story lobby, while adding Shift produces a three-story version. It warns that the impressive lobby costs more to maintain. It also explains how to build multi-story stairs, why tenants complain that there is “No Transport Connected,” and why a hotel room displaying a bug icon should probably be bulldozed before the infestation spreads.

This is not high literature. It is excellent historical documentation.

Game knowledge used to live on small personal sites

A modern player looking for SimTower help will probably encounter a wiki, a video, a forum archive or a large database. In the 1990s and early 2000s, much of that information lived on personal pages whose authors organized the material however they felt like organizing it.

That meant screenshots, handwritten walkthroughs, cheat lists, image galleries and sentences such as “Abra Cadabra! You have a two/three story staircase!”

The personality is part of the value.

The page survives today inside Rubenerd’s retro museum rather than pretending it was written yesterday. That preservation choice gives the material context. It remains useful to somebody actually playing SimTower, but it also shows how fan documentation worked before the Web consolidated around a handful of giant platforms.

For search, the details matter: SimTower lobby cheats, tower ratings, express lifts, hotel bugs, multi-story staircases, transport connections and the game’s specific building mechanics. These are exactly the narrow terms that can make an old page useful decades after its layout stopped being fashionable.

Ancient Web: Medieval Writing Taught Paleography with Flash and Netscape 4

A medieval-manuscript course that still warns you about Netscape 4, Internet Explorer 4 and the Flash 5 plugin is doing preservation work on two centuries at once.

Dr Dianne Tillotson built the site as an introduction to medieval manuscripts, paleography, script history, literacy and the culture surrounding the written word. It is not just a gallery of pretty pages. The point is to teach people how handwriting changed, how documents were made, what medieval writers actually wrote and how to begin decoding scripts that can look completely hostile to a modern reader.

The site says it has been counting visitors since October 24, 2000. It also retains the architecture of that era: frames, a no-frames alternative, a site map, JavaScript assumptions and interactive paleography exercises originally built around Flash.

The technology aged. The subject did not.

A serious educational site wearing old browser requirements

Tillotson’s writing is one of the reasons the project remains readable. She describes paleography as an “arcane art” without turning it into a performance of academic difficulty. Famous manuscripts sit beside scraps “discarded by history,” and the site treats both as useful evidence.

The resource ranges beyond letter forms. It discusses oral culture, manuscript production, writing systems and the fact that literacy in the Middle Ages represented a particular social world rather than a universal skill. A medieval church glossary and extensive site map push the project toward reference-library territory.

There is also a very specific layer of Web history embedded in the project. Tillotson notes image-permission arrangements with the British Library, National Archives and other institutions. She discusses upgrading old compressed graphics as bandwidth improved. She warns that copyright on manuscript photographs can outlive the manuscripts by several centuries. And she argues that the Web remains valuable for distributing educational material without putting everything behind a price tag.

That last point reads differently in 2026 than it did when the page was younger.

The site’s last listed modification is February 2016, but much of it remains readable because the information pages are ordinary HTML even where the old interactive machinery has become unreliable.

For researchers, the useful search surface is unusually dense: paleography, medieval manuscripts, Latin and vernacular scripts, literacy, manuscript photography, British Library reproductions and specific historical writing forms. For webmasters, it is a reminder that rich educational projects do not become useless just because their presentation layer gets old.

Ancient Web: Greg Kennedy Preserved His Family’s 1997 Homepage

A lot of early personal websites disappeared because nobody thought the family homepage was the part of Internet history that needed saving. Greg Kennedy did the useful thing and kept one.

Kennedy’s current project index labels it plainly: “Historic family webpage, circa 1997.” That is almost underselling it. The surviving material is a small time capsule of the period when putting your family, hobbies and hand-drawn interests on the Web was a perfectly normal reason to learn HTML.

One of the pages belongs to Erin, who introduces herself with: “I am twelve years old, and I LOVE horses!” Her horse homepage says visitors have been arriving since May 23, 1997. From there it moves through horse evolution, grooming tools, English and Western tack, riding styles and printable coloring material.

Nothing about it was designed to become archival evidence. That is why it works so well as archival evidence.

The ordinary Web is the part that vanishes first

Histories of the Internet naturally preserve major companies, browser wars, famous software and important technical documents. Personal pages are harder. They were hosted on small accounts, moved between ISPs, abandoned when families changed computers and often died when a hosting company shut down.

Kennedy’s preserved pages show the other side of the Web: children explaining hobbies, household projects, simple illustrations, informal writing and pages built because somebody wanted to share something rather than establish a brand.

The current Greg Kennedy site is still very much in that spirit. His project index jumps between retrocomputing, electronics, old software, conversion utilities, games and experiments. The 1997 family material sits among those newer projects instead of being redesigned into a modern museum exhibit.

That choice matters. A reconstruction can show what an old site contained. The old files themselves show how people actually wrote, linked, organized and decorated pages at the time.

For web-history researchers, the specific details are the useful part: the 1997 date, informal headings, visitor-counter language, hobby education, personal email links and the complete absence of a content strategy meeting.

Ancient Web: Brad Templeton Preserved the 1978 DEC Spam and the Replies It Triggered

Before spam filters, unsubscribe links and entire industries devoted to unwanted email, somebody at DEC typed hundreds of ARPANET addresses into a message by hand and discovered that people already hated this idea.

Brad Templeton’s page preserves the May 1978 Digital Equipment Corporation mass mailing that is often described as one of the earliest examples of network spam and sometimes as the first.

The sender was Gary Thuerk, a DEC marketer promoting demonstrations of the new DECSYSTEM-20 and its built-in ARPANET support to users on the West Coast.

The infrastructure was primitive enough that even the mistake is interesting.

According to the account preserved by Templeton, the SNDMSG mail program had limited room for addressing fields. Hundreds of addresses were typed manually from a printed ARPANET directory. Addresses overflowed from one header field into another and eventually into the message body. The program would accept only 320 destinations, so additional recipients were handled separately.

Bulk email had arrived before anybody had bothered to make bulk email convenient.

The replies are more valuable than the famous message

Templeton did not merely save a copy of the DEC advertisement.

His page also preserves reaction from ARPANET users and later context from people involved in the event. That turns a famous anecdote into something much more useful: a small primary-source archive showing how network users understood unsolicited mass messaging while the norms were still being negotiated.

Some recipients were angry about the misuse of the network. The Defense Communications Agency, which operated the ARPANET, complained to Thuerk’s management. One user believed the mailing had caused trouble for his system. Others apparently thought the DEC announcement was at least more relevant than the small personal mass mailings that had occurred before it.

Thuerk later told Templeton that he considered the new DEC system genuinely relevant to the ARPANET community and did not believe he was simply flooding strangers with junk. He also knew there might be complaints, just not how strong the reaction would be.

That argument should sound familiar to anyone who has ever received a message beginning with “I thought this might be relevant to you.”

The technology changed. The justification did not need much work.

The page also preserves the weird physical constraints of the network era: printed address directories, manually entered recipient lists, 56 kbps links and mail software whose field limits could visibly spill addresses into the message itself.

Those details are exactly what disappear when Internet history gets reduced to a timeline bullet reading “first spam sent in 1978.”
