A 25-ton single-cylinder engine deserves more than one photograph and a caption saying “old engine.”
Visit Coolspring Power Museum’s Otto 175 hp feature
Coolspring Power Museum gave its 175-horsepower Otto gas engine the opposite treatment: a multi-page technical feature documenting the machine, its pumping equipment, its history and its preservation.
The engine spent most of its working life at the Brookville Water Works in Pennsylvania driving a Deane triplex water pump. The pair eventually left the water works, changed hands, and ended up installed at Coolspring’s Power Technology Building.
The numbers make the scale clear.
The Otto weighs about 25 tons. Its Deane pump weighs another 20. The engine has a 21-inch bore, a 30-inch stroke and a displacement of 10,391 cubic inches—roughly 170 liters from one cylinder.
Its nameplate rating is 175 horsepower at only 180 RPM.
That works out to more than 5,100 foot-pounds of torque.
Industrial machinery becomes understandable when somebody records the specifications
The Deane pump is a substantial machine in its own right, with three 14-inch-bore cylinders and a 12-inch stroke. Driven by the Otto, the setup could deliver about 1.5 million gallons of water per day.
Coolspring’s write-up also places the engine inside a larger preservation story. Brookville’s water works continued using large stationary machinery well into the modern era, and other engines from the facility—including a Cooper Bessemer and a Fairbanks-Morse set—were later preserved as part of the museum collection.
This is exactly why small museum websites matter.
A general industrial-history page might say that large stationary gas engines once powered municipal systems. Coolspring gives you bore, stroke, displacement, speed, pump dimensions, ownership history and the name of the water works where the machine actually earned its keep.
