The Numbers Racket is an online copy of a CD-ROM prepared in 1998 about so-called numbers stations: mysterious shortwave broadcasts that often transmitted groups of spoken digits, Morse code, tones, or repeated identifiers.

The site’s author now presents the material explicitly as historical.

The information is not supposed to describe today’s radio environment. It is a snapshot of what the numbers-station monitoring scene looked like in the late 1990s.

A taxonomy built by listeners

The archive contains station designations, schedules, frequency notes, Morse conventions, recordings, and descriptions of recurring transmission formats.

One section explains cut numbers, where letters substitute for digits to shorten Morse transmissions. Another lists numbered Morse station types with shorthand descriptions of their callups and endings.

Elsewhere, the archive records specific station nicknames, repeated schedules, frequency lists, and the uncertainty that surrounded them.

That uncertainty is part of the history.

Shortwave listeners could observe a transmission very precisely without necessarily knowing who operated it, who received it, or what the message meant. The result was a community-built catalog based on patterns: voice, language, time, frequency, callup, message length, and behavior. Industrial Alchemy is what happens when the junk drawer wins and gets a museum.

The site went online in 2006 and has now crossed the funny threshold where a website about vintage technology is itself vintage technology. It is still being updated.

Its Technology Museum is organized by component type rather than by famous product. That creates categories normal museums rarely bother with: Geissler tubes, Nixie displays, Dekatrons, Numitrons, magic-eye tubes, magnetrons, klystrons, photomultipliers, CRTs, VFDs, early semiconductor devices, calculators, and assorted instrumentation.

The archive is strongest when the hardware is obscure enough that a model number would otherwise lead nowhere.

Components deserve histories too

A computer museum might preserve a complete machine. Industrial Alchemy preserves the things inside machines and the strange devices between categories.

Recent additions have included an early Western Electric point-contact transistor, unusual LED modules, a Sharp PC-1500 pocket computer, obscure Nixie tubes, and an enormous hybrid countermeasures processor used in the U.S. Army’s Cobra helicopter. That last module contains a forest of bond wires and dozens of semiconductor dies inside a hermetic metal package.

The site provides photographs, descriptions, and datasheets when available.

That sounds simple until you need to identify an unlabeled display module pulled from old equipment.

Component history is difficult because parts were designed to disappear into products. When the product dies, the individual tube or IC often becomes an anonymous object in a bin. A hand-built catalog can preserve the visual cues, packaging, manufacturer, and application long after the original sales literature vanishes.

The site also maintains the personality of the older technical web. Its updates discuss Hamvention flea-market booths, weird acquisitions, and the pleasure of finding obsolete hardware that absolutely nobody needed to save.

The War of 1812 gets much easier to understand when the ships stop being statistics and start acquiring captains, ports, prisoners, declarations, and names.

1812Privateers.org is devoted primarily to American and British privateering during the War of 1812, with related material on prisoners of war and merchant activity.

Privateers occupied an awkward space between commerce and warfare.

Privately owned vessels operated under government authorization, usually through letters of marque, allowing them to attack and capture enemy shipping under wartime rules.

That produced mountains of records.

A war reconstructed from lists

The site collects vessel names, commanders, home ports, engagements, declarations, prisoner information, and references to contemporary sources such as Lloyd’s List and nineteenth-century naval compilations.

One section uses George Foster Emmons’ 1853 naval history to build out a large list of American privateers. Entries connect ship names with captains, ports, actions, and additional information found elsewhere.

Other material helps genealogical researchers work backward from a person’s name.

A sailor might appear in a declaration, a crew list, a prisoner record, or a document tied to the master of a particular vessel. The site explains how to follow those relationships rather than presenting the archive as a simple alphabetical list.

That structure is what makes old specialist websites valuable.

The underlying documents may exist in libraries or scans, but somebody has already spent years figuring out which names connect to which ships and which surviving records answer which questions.

John Rosa’s site is centered on the AMC Javelin and AMX, but it sprawls into the larger American Motors universe: Rambler, Gremlin, Hornet, Matador, racing programs, dealer material, toys, advertisements, police cars, foreign-market variants, magazine articles, and owner cars.

The result feels less like a polished marque museum than the garage of somebody who kept every clipping.

That is a compliment.

The details normal car histories skip

One section collects old magazine tests and advertisements. Another documents racing Javelins associated with Roger Penske, Mark Donohue, Shirley Shahan, Wally Booth, and other AMC competitors. There are scans of road tests, drivetrain articles, performance-parts coverage, and period advertisements.

The foreign-market pages are even better for researchers. They show right-hand-drive Australian Ramblers and Mexican VAM cars whose specifications diverged from American versions. The site notes details such as Mexican-built Javelins using a 282-cubic-inch six instead of the V8 combinations familiar to U.S. buyers.

Then the archive gets delightfully specific.

There are AMC model cars, dealer promotional models, computer-game appearances, police Javelins, VIN information, old software, restoration photographs, and pages built from reader submissions. A software page still discusses a late-1990s driving simulation that was supposed to feature Trans-Am Javelins, complete with period release-delay updates.

This kind of site is useful because obscure manufacturers generate fragmented history. One fact lives in a magazine. Another lives in a brochure. A third survives because an owner scanned a photograph twenty-five years ago.

The site is useful because roads are usually documented for navigation, not memory.

Once a route is bypassed, renumbered, truncated, or absorbed into another highway, the old arrangement can disappear from ordinary maps surprisingly quickly.

Road numbers have biographies

Arizona Roads treats route numbers almost like people with complicated careers.

Individual pages trace endpoints, extensions, former alignments, redesignations, and connections to other highways. Separate sections collect freeway information and mistakes or oddities in road signage.

The historical map scans are especially good.

A 1927 Rand McNally map captures the federal highway system while it was still settling into recognizable form. The site notes, for example, that US 60 had already become US 66 in the planning process while other future Arizona routes were still missing or carried numbers that later disappeared.

A 1935 map catches another transitional moment around Boulder Dam, when Arizona highway numbering changed as the dam and its approaches were completed.

The rule is simple: a project belongs if the CPU itself was built rather than purchased as an off-the-shelf processor. It can imitate a commercial architecture, but the actual logic has to exist in real hardware. Simulations and paper designs do not qualify.

That leaves a wonderfully broad definition of “computer.”

The current index links machines built from TTL logic, relays, FPGA hardware, discrete components, and stranger approaches. Project names include Magic-1, Megaprocessor, TTLCPU, Pineapple One, Relay Computer, Home-Built TTL Computer, Gigatron, and many more.

The webring idea still makes sense here

This is one of the rare places where the old webring concept was almost perfect for the subject.

Each builder solved similar problems differently: instruction decoding, registers, clocks, arithmetic, memory interfaces, control logic, front panels, debugging, and physical construction. Following one machine naturally makes you curious about the next.

That means the site is not only about preserved express locomotives sitting under museum lighting.

It includes government railways, industrial systems, sugar lines, private operators, remains, static exhibits, restoration projects, and locomotives that have returned to steam.

Preservation is a moving target

The interesting part of a locomotive database is status.

A machine can move from storage to restoration, from display to operation, from one museum to another, or from apparently complete to a source of components for another project.

Australian Steam keeps updating those changes.

The site divides locomotives among systems such as the New South Wales Government Railways, Queensland Government Railways, Victorian Railways, Western Australian Government Railways, Tasmanian Government Railways, South Australian Railways, and a large collection of private and industrial operators.

The sugar industry alone accounts for more than a hundred preserved locomotives in the site’s current index.

That breadth reflects why Australian railway preservation is so complicated. Ancient Web: The IBM PC110 Site Preserves a Palmtop That Was Too Weird for Its Own Good

The IBM PC110 looks like somebody challenged the 1990s to fit a real PC into a jacket pocket and refused to accept the obvious answer.

The machine was sold in Japan in the mid-1990s. It used a 33 MHz 486-class processor, had a tiny color display, built-in modem, PCMCIA expansion, and weighed about 715 grams with a battery and hard disk installed. Daniel Basterfield’s site exists because owning one outside Japan meant becoming your own support department.

The page says it plainly: unless you could read Japanese, you were probably going to install another operating system.

A support site for a machine IBM barely supported

The useful part is not nostalgia. It is the accumulated troubleshooting.

Basterfield documented batteries, external power packs, storage, operating-system installation, accessories, mailing lists, English-language documentation, and the strange development history behind the machine. One history page points out that the PC110’s board carries the word “MONOLITH” and a design date from 1992, years before the product reached market.

The battery pages are pure old-web utility. They compare expected run time with hard disks versus flash storage and preserve homemade external battery-pack instructions built from Radio Shack parts. The links page points toward old mailing lists, translations of Japanese PersonaWare modules, and user documentation that was difficult to find even when the machine was current.

That is what makes specialist pages like this survive.

A modern product database can tell you the processor speed. It probably will not tell you which power adapter somebody successfully substituted in 1998 or how long a particular PCMCIA hard drive ran on the stock battery.

Long before every bad claim generated twelve reaction videos and a monetized correction thread, Phil Plait was already writing web pages explaining why the astronomy was wrong.

Bad Astronomy grew around a simple idea: astronomy is popular enough that movies, television, newspapers, conspiracy theorists, and ordinary people constantly get pieces of it wrong.

Plait began publishing science explanations online in the 1990s and built the site into a large collection of misconceptions, media criticism, and responses to fringe claims.

The surviving pages are wonderfully specific.

The web needed somebody to answer back

One section dismantles the 2001 Fox television special claiming the Apollo Moon landings were faked. Plait goes through familiar arguments about missing stars, shadows, the waving flag, radiation, photographs, and supposed studio sets instead of merely calling the program ridiculous and moving on.

Other pages tackle the “Face on Mars,” Richard Hoagland’s claims, Planet X, UFO material, bad science in television, and broader questions about how scientists should respond to pseudoscience.

That last category makes the archive more interesting than a pile of corrections.

A 2004 essay on debating pseudoscientists wrestles with a problem that feels completely current: correcting nonsense can spread it, ignoring nonsense can let it grow, and people committed to a claim can simply move to the next argument after the previous one fails.

The design is old, the navigation is hand-built, and many pages still carry update notes from the era when a webmaster openly documented corrections instead of silently replacing text.

That makes Bad Astronomy useful as web history as well as science writing.

Despite the name, the site ranges far beyond Technics-branded stereo gear.

Its pages document tape recorders, dictation machines, microphones, portable radios, televisions, video hardware, accessories, batteries, cassettes, wire recorders, test equipment and other electronic debris from the twentieth century. The index moves comfortably between familiar names such as Sony, Panasonic, Philips and Grundig and obscure Soviet, Eastern European and short-lived Western equipment.

That mixture makes it useful.

The stuff between famous products

Technology history usually remembers flagship devices.

Collectors end up preserving everything around them.

Vintage Technics includes Minifon wire recorders, Mohawk Midgetape machines, Grundig Stenorette dictation systems, tiny portable recorders, Soviet Electronica equipment, flight recorders, old Watchman televisions, unusual cassette formats and accessories that often survive without documentation.

Individual pages frequently photograph details that matter to restorers: connectors, battery arrangements, tape dimensions, switches, cases and internal mechanisms. One accessories section compares obsolete recording media such as Steno-Cassettes, Elcaset and proprietary miniature reels.

The English translation is imperfect and the site now carries intrusive promotional material in places. Neither erases the underlying archive.
