Ancient Web: The Lighthouse Directory Has 24,800 Lights and Keeps Counting

The Lighthouse Directory is what happens when a useful list refuses to stop growing for twenty-seven years.

The project was founded in 1999, during the famous relocation of North Carolina’s Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. Its purpose was straightforward: collect reliable information about lighthouses and connect researchers to other good sources on the Web.

It now covers more than 24,800 lighthouses around the world.

That number is not a static brag buried on an abandoned homepage. The site is still being maintained. Regional pages are checked and revised, new photographs are added, restoration news appears on the front page, and the directory continues correcting the slow decay that happens when thirty thousand outbound links meet the real Internet.

The entries are compact but practical.

A listing can include when a light was established, tower height, focal-plane height, flash pattern, construction, current status, ownership, access information, photographs, maps, and links to preservation groups or official light lists. Destroyed lighthouses remain in the directory rather than disappearing simply because the tower did.

That last part is important.

A lighthouse directory eventually becomes a directory of absence too.

The site also defines its terms instead of assuming everyone already knows them. What counts as a lighthouse? How is it different from a beacon? What is a light station? What does focal plane mean? The Directory settles on a practical definition: a substantial tower, at least four meters tall, built to carry a navigational light.

By February 2009, after the Hainan page was added, the listings covered the entire world. “Entire world” did not mean finished. New lights are found, structures are demolished, access changes, towers are automated, restorations begin, links rot, and countries revise their own records.

So the work continues.

This is one of the best kinds of old Web project: narrow enough for one person’s editorial judgment to matter, broad enough to become infrastructure for everybody else studying the subject.

It is hosted by ibiblio at the University of North Carolina, another long-running corner of the Internet built around keeping useful information publicly reachable.

The SS Richard Montgomery was an American Liberty ship that grounded and broke up in the Thames Estuary in August 1944 while carrying wartime munitions. Much of the cargo was removed, but explosives remained aboard and the wreck has been monitored ever since.

That much is established history.

The website built around it goes much further.

A research pile with an argument attached

SSRichardMontgomery.com collects an unusual mixture of primary material, technical documents, photographs, maps, press reports, parliamentary material, Freedom of Information links, and personal interpretation.

Among the material linked from the site are original ship records, an accident report, photographs of the wreck and unloading operation, risk-assessment documents, navigation charts, historical newspaper material, and a scanned ship log. One surviving log scan is visibly marked as a declassified United States merchant-vessel record from 1943.

The site also makes much stronger claims about the scale of a possible explosion, government secrecy, surrounding infrastructure, and other hazards. Those claims should be read as the site’s argument, not automatically as independently established fact.

That distinction is important because it is also what makes the page such a good old-web artifact.

This is not a neutral museum database. It is one person assembling evidence over years because he believes an official story is incomplete. The result is messy, repetitive, opinionated, and full of material that would otherwise be scattered across reports, newspaper archives, government pages, PDFs, and dead links.

The homepage still behaves like a hand-maintained research desk. New notes sit beside material from decades earlier. Technical references sit beside television clips. Serious archival documents sit beside blunt editorial commentary.

Tom Rizzo’s long page on glass fishing floats begins with a personal story: in 1977, during a 23,000-mile trip in a Volkswagen Beetle with his wife, baby daughter, and two cats, he encountered people near Shi Shi Beach in Washington who found and sold floats after storms. He and his wife found three themselves.

Decades later, that curiosity had become a substantial collection and a densely illustrated web reference.

Industrial objects with collector-grade mysteries

Glass fishing floats were attached to nets, lines, traps, and other fishing gear to provide buoyancy or mark locations. The archive shows sizes ranging from small hand-line floats to large spheres used with deep-sea gear.

The variety is enormous.

There are round floats, eggs, rolling-pin forms, grooved shapes, unusual experimental designs, and examples still wrapped in rope or other protective netting. Japanese, Norwegian, Swedish, American, and other floats appear throughout the page.

The markings are where the subject becomes especially interesting.

Henning Umland’s CelNav homepage presents an introduction and tutorial, freeware, links, and supporting material for people learning to determine position from celestial observations.

The page’s visitor counter dates back to May 20, 1997.

Its last listed update is from 2019, and the homepage proudly notes that it is powered by Linux.

This is exactly the kind of compact technical site that used to be common: one person, one subject, one directory tree, no attempt to turn the material into an endless feed.

A technique worth understanding even when satellites work

Celestial navigation combines astronomy, timekeeping, geometry, observation, and practical instrument use.

A sextant observation does not produce a magic coordinate. The navigator has to understand what was measured, when it was measured, which celestial body was observed, and how that observation constrains position on Earth.

That makes the subject unusually well suited to a tutorial site.

Even readers who never intend to cross an ocean using a sextant can learn something about the relationship between clocks, stars, angles, and maps.

The old web was good at preserving skills like this because publishing did not require a commercial audience.

A person who knew a difficult technique could simply explain it.

Ancient Web: 1812 Privateers Built a Database Out of a War at Sea

The War of 1812 gets much easier to understand when the ships stop being statistics and start acquiring captains, ports, prisoners, declarations, and names.

1812Privateers.org is devoted primarily to American and British privateering during the War of 1812, with related material on prisoners of war and merchant activity.

Privateers occupied an awkward space between commerce and warfare.

Privately owned vessels operated under government authorization, usually through letters of marque, allowing them to attack and capture enemy shipping under wartime rules.

That produced mountains of records.

A war reconstructed from lists

The site collects vessel names, commanders, home ports, engagements, declarations, prisoner information, and references to contemporary sources such as Lloyd’s List and nineteenth-century naval compilations.

One section uses George Foster Emmons’ 1853 naval history to build out a large list of American privateers. Entries connect ship names with captains, ports, actions, and additional information found elsewhere.

Other material helps genealogical researchers work backward from a person’s name.

A sailor might appear in a declaration, a crew list, a prisoner record, or a document tied to the master of a particular vessel. The site explains how to follow those relationships rather than presenting the archive as a simple alphabetical list.

That structure is what makes old specialist websites valuable.

The underlying documents may exist in libraries or scans, but somebody has already spent years figuring out which names connect to which ships and which surviving records answer which questions.

The homepage was still being updated in 2024, including corrections and additions around Francis Scott Key and individual people connected to the conflict.

One of the better uses of an old website is taking an old book that would otherwise sit quietly in a library and making it easy to stumble into at 2 a.m.

The page republishes an article by Commodore E. Simpson from Hammersly’s Naval Encyclopedia, published in Philadelphia in 1881, with additional illustrations gathered from other sources.

That date makes the material interesting in a way a modern summary cannot quite reproduce. The author is explaining ironclad warships while the transformation from wooden fleets to armored steam warships is still recent history.

The article traces early experiments with armor, the effect of explosive shells, the French Gloire, Britain’s Warrior, broadside ironclads, turreted ships, armor thickness and changing gun power.

Technical history written close to the event

Modern naval-history pages often compress the transition into a familiar sequence: wooden sailing warships, iron armor, steam power, turrets.

This 1881 account still sounds like somebody trying to understand the engineering race while it is happening.

The article discusses the constant trade between offense and defense. Armor gets thicker. Guns become more powerful. Ship layouts change. Designers experiment with broadside batteries, turrets, armored bulkheads and firing arcs.

There is also something useful about the original vocabulary. Researchers looking for period terminology around ironclads, armor, turret ships, the Stevens battery, shell guns or nineteenth-century naval construction get language from the era rather than a cleaned-up modern paraphrase.

For webmasters, this is a simple preservation pattern worth stealing: a historically useful document does not need an elaborate interface. Good transcription, illustrations, headings and stable URLs can turn an old source into a searchable research object.

The page is not flashy. Neither was the 1881 encyclopedia.
