The fare section documents how passengers paid to ride Chicago’s elevated and rapid-transit system across more than a century of technological and institutional change.

It covers fare levels, policies, media, and the equipment used to collect money.

That sounds administrative until you start looking at the objects.

Every fare system leaves artifacts

Chicago transit riders have used tickets, coins, tokens, magnetic-stripe cards, contactless smart cards, vending machines, turnstiles, and other systems that were ordinary when new and nearly invisible once replaced.

Chicago-L.org preserves those layers.

Its fare history begins in the nineteenth century and follows changes through the era of competing elevated companies, consolidation, the Chicago Rapid Transit Company, and the creation of the CTA.

A separate gallery documents the Automated Fare Collection era from 1994 to 2014, including magnetic farecards and contactless smart cards along with the fare types they represented.

The wider site provides the context those cards need.

Chicago’s “L” was assembled from lines originally built and operated by different private companies. The system was unified operationally, later moved into public ownership, expanded into subways and expressway medians, and repeatedly changed service patterns as the city changed around it.

A fare token therefore belongs to a specific operating system, policy, and period—not just a box of old transit junk.

That makes the archive useful to transportation historians, ephemera collectors, modelers, designers, and anybody trying to identify a strange card found in a drawer.

Ancient Web: Australian Steam Keeps Track of More Than 600 Surviving Locomotives

Railway history gets much more useful when somebody stops counting famous locomotives and starts tracking where the obscure ones actually ended up.

Australian Steam describes itself as a listing of surviving Australian steam locomotives, and the scale is substantial: more than 600 machines are indexed by state of origin and first user.

That means the site is not only about preserved express locomotives sitting under museum lighting.

It includes government railways, industrial systems, sugar lines, private operators, remains, static exhibits, restoration projects, and locomotives that have returned to steam.

Preservation is a moving target

The interesting part of a locomotive database is status.

A machine can move from storage to restoration, from display to operation, from one museum to another, or from apparently complete to a source of components for another project.

Australian Steam keeps updating those changes.

The site divides locomotives among systems such as the New South Wales Government Railways, Queensland Government Railways, Victorian Railways, Western Australian Government Railways, Tasmanian Government Railways, South Australian Railways, and a large collection of private and industrial operators.

The sugar industry alone accounts for more than a hundred preserved locomotives in the site’s current index.

That breadth reflects why Australian railway preservation is so complicated. Different colonies and states developed different gauges, locomotive classes, suppliers, operating conditions, and industrial networks. The surviving collection is therefore less like one national fleet and more like several overlapping technological ecosystems.

For researchers and restorers, the value is in the model numbers, builders, wheel arrangements, present locations, photographs, ownership changes, and status notes.

For everybody else, it is an unusually effective way to see how much machinery survives outside the famous museum pieces.
