Ancient Web: FishCam Has Been Pointing a Camera at Something Since 1994

A webcam is boring now. In 1994, pointing a camera at a fish tank and putting the picture on the web was enough to make history.

FishCam says it began that year inside Netscape, when a camera was trained on a lonely aquarium and began transmitting images onto the still-new World Wide Web.

The site describes itself as the second live camera on the web and the oldest camera site still in existence.

That claim is part of the site’s own history page, and the larger story fits the moment: early webcams were not polished streaming products. They were experiments in proving that a browser could show something happening somewhere else right now.

The point was that it was live

FishCam’s subject hardly mattered.

The technical and cultural trick was the connection between an ordinary physical object and a remote browser window. A tank full of fish became evidence that the web could carry more than documents.

That sounds obvious after decades of livestreams, doorbell cameras, video calls, wildlife feeds, and phones broadcasting from anywhere. In 1994, it was not obvious at all.

The current site still preserves that tiny premise. There is a main page, an information page, a news section, and the camera image itself. At the moment, the site notes that the fish tank is transitioning to a new location, so the camera has been pointed outside instead.

Which is perfect, really.

The camera remains the artifact even when the fish temporarily do not.

The page also warns visitors that a dark or black-and-white image probably means the lights are off and the infrared mode has taken over. That mundane note is exactly what gives old live-camera sites their charm. Nobody is pretending the feed is entertainment television. You might visit and see basically nothing.

But it is happening now.

Ancient Web: Stony Brook Turns Ancient Mazes Into Mathematics

A labyrinth can be a religious symbol, a drawing exercise, an architectural pattern, or a string of numbers.

The Stony Brook page takes familiar historical labyrinths and strips them down to structure.

It compares the Cretan maze with the Jericho maze found in medieval Hebrew manuscripts, then defines a class called simple, alternating, transit mazes.

The terminology sounds dry until the diagrams make it obvious.

A maze as a level sequence

“Transit” means the path runs from the outside to the center without branches. “Alternating” means the path changes direction when it changes levels. “Simple” means it essentially circles each level once.

Once those conditions are met, a maze can be represented by the sequence of levels visited.

The page gives the Cretan pattern as 032147658 and the Jericho pattern as 03452167.

That is the lovely part: two ancient-looking drawings become objects that can be compared mathematically without caring about line thickness, decorative style, or the exact shape of the drawing.

The page also contrasts these with more complicated designs, including the Chartres-style labyrinth and a medieval plan of Constantinople, to show where the rules break.

The result is simultaneously historical and abstract. Archaeology and manuscript studies supply the examples; mathematics explains the family resemblance.

This is exactly the kind of page the old academic web was good at producing. A professor could publish a niche idea with diagrams, sequences, examples, and links without turning it into a journal article, a product, or a content campaign.

Ancient Web: Alone in the Wilderness Preserves Dick Proenneke’s Life Before It Became a YouTube Genre

Long before “guy builds cabin alone” became an entire video genre, Dick Proenneke actually did it, filmed it, and left behind decades of material for somebody else to organize.

The surviving site from Bob Swerer Productions tells the story in small hand-built sections: Early Years, Building the Cabin, Living in Alaska, Meeting with Dick, and Later Years.

The early-years page starts well before Twin Lakes.

Proenneke was born in 1916, learned carpentry while serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II, spent months recovering from rheumatic fever, then worked as a diesel mechanic, ranch hand, heavy-equipment operator, fisherman, and Fish and Wildlife Service employee before retiring in 1967.

That winter he prepared for the project that made him famous.

The website follows the life instead of flattening it

The next year Proenneke built his cabin at Twin Lakes in Alaska. He stayed in the region for decades, kept journals, and filmed daily life with a 16mm wind-up camera.

Bob Swerer later assembled Proenneke’s footage into Alone in the Wilderness. The production site’s own material says the original film was released in 2003, while companion pages preserve the background that a one-hour documentary cannot fully carry.

That is why the website is worth keeping around.

It gives the famous cabin a before-and-after. The carpentry skills came from somewhere. The mechanical ability came from somewhere. So did the patience to repair equipment, improvise tools, and spend long stretches alone.

The page design is almost aggressively simple: small images, short paragraphs, a narrow navigation row, and no attempt to turn the story into a modern lifestyle brand.

It feels less like a media property than the online companion to a stack of DVDs somebody still ships from a small production company.

Ancient Web: NiagaraFrontier Documents the Summer America Turned Off a Waterfall

For several months in 1969, one side of Niagara Falls was mostly switched off.

The page documents the temporary dewatering of the American Falls from June 12 through November 24, 1969, when a cofferdam diverted most of the American channel toward Horseshoe Falls so engineers could inspect the exposed rock face and talus.

It is one of those historical events that sounds exaggerated until the photographs and day-by-day notes start piling up.

A geological experiment at tourist scale

The project grew out of concern about erosion, rockfalls, and the long-term appearance of the American Falls. Congress authorized study work, the International Joint Commission became involved, and engineers eventually created the dry conditions needed for drilling, mapping, rock sampling, and slope investigation.

The chronology records construction details, survey work, drilling platforms, debris removal, tourist-access plans, and the practical problems of working beside one of the world’s most famous waterfalls.

It also preserves the grim side of exposing a riverbed. Human remains were recovered from the talus after the water was diverted.

Visitors eventually received limited access to part of the dry channel through a controlled walkway. For a short period, tourists could stand on ground that was normally under the Niagara River.

That makes the page useful in several directions at once: civil engineering, geology, environmental history, tourism, regional history, and the politics of altering a major natural landmark.

The photographs matter, but so does the chronology. A dramatic before-and-after picture cannot explain why a drilling platform appeared on a certain date or what engineers were measuring there.

Static local-history pages often preserve exactly that connective tissue.

Ancient Web: CloneKeen Kept Commander Keen Playable in Free Software

CloneKeen is what old PC game preservation looked like when a fan decided the cleanest answer was to rewrite the game engine and give away the source.

The project describes itself as a nearly complete clone of Commander Keen: Invasion of the Vorticons. It is written in pure C, uses SDL, and was released as free software under the GPL.

The surviving site carries a 2003-2016 copyright line, which places it squarely in the era when SourceForge pages were one of the main public homes for hobbyist open-source projects.

Preservation by portability

CloneKeen did not stop at making the old gameplay run on a contemporary desktop.

The site lists support for GNU/Linux, BSD and other Unix-like systems, Windows XP-era Win32 machines, Mac OS X, Haiku, GP32X, Symbian phones, and even the Sega Dreamcast.

That list is almost more interesting than the game itself.

It captures a period when “portable” meant somebody had actually made the code compile on a ridiculous collection of machines.

The clone also added things the original did not have: two-player support, a built-in level editor, shared user maps, alternate game modes, and deliberately silly options such as a fully automatic raygun.

That is the nice thing about source-level preservation. Once the engine is understood well enough to recreate it, preservation can turn into experimentation.

The website itself is just as period-specific as the software. Small graphical navigation buttons lead to downloads, screenshots, installation instructions, modding information, and contact details. There is no launcher account, no cloud library, and no store client between the user and the source code.

You download it. You compile it. You mess with it.

Ancient Web: W8JI Turned a Ham Shack Into an RF Engineering Textbook

Some ham-radio sites show the station. W8JI.com tries to explain why the station works.

The site is a sprawling technical notebook built around antennas, amplifiers, receiving systems, transmission lines, baluns, RF noise, grounding, vacuum tubes, filters, relays, radiation fields, common-mode current, and the thousand small arguments that appear whenever radio people start comparing notes.

The table of contents alone feels like a graduate seminar conducted in somebody’s workshop.

Technical folklore gets measured

One recurring theme is skepticism toward explanations that get repeated because they sound plausible.

Pages dig into amplifier arcing, parasitic oscillation claims, tube failures, tank circuits, inductor behavior, receiving preamps, coax leakage, bandwidth, antenna coupling, shield currents, and ground systems. Instead of treating equipment failure as mysterious, the site repeatedly asks what voltage, current, impedance, field, or component behavior would actually produce the observed result.

The author even states the philosophy directly: Internet technical accuracy should improve through review and correction rather than hardening into folklore.

That sentence could serve as a mission statement for half the useful old web.

The archive is especially valuable because amateur radio lives between theory and hardware. Maxwell’s equations are real, but so are corroded connectors, badly routed coax, misleading meters, unknown soil conductivity, overloaded amplifiers, and fifty-year-old vacuum tubes.

A good technical page has to connect both worlds.

W8JI does that across dozens of narrowly focused articles. Somebody searching for a specific symptom can land on a page about relays, grounding, antenna isolation, 160-meter receiving systems, power supplies, or amplifier stability without needing to understand the site’s entire structure first.

That is excellent long-tail documentation.

Ancient Web: NOVA’s Island of the Sharks Still Looks Like Educational Web Design From 2002

NOVA’s old Island of the Sharks site is a reminder that educational websites once expected you to click around and assemble the lesson yourself.

The surviving page says it was updated in June 2002. Its navigation is pure early educational web: “Who’s Who of Sharks,” “Close Encounters,” a “Clickable Shark,” “The Hunt,” “Shark Bytes,” Cocos Island material, dispatches, resources, and a site map.

There is no infinite scroll and no giant hero panel explaining what the page is about.

You pick a doorway and go in.

A television companion built like a small reference site

That structure mattered because NOVA Online was doing more than advertising a television episode. The site broke the subject into pieces that could stand on their own after the broadcast was over.

Species identification, anatomy, hunting behavior, field locations, encounters, and background material each got their own place in the navigation. A student could arrive from a classroom assignment, a search engine, or another PBS page and still find something useful without watching the program first.

The “Clickable Shark” idea is especially period-correct. Instead of embedding a modern interactive framework, the web page itself was the interface: image maps, linked sections, short explanatory pages, and a site map for when the visitor got lost.

That sounds primitive now, but it made the material unusually durable. Two decades later, the page is still legible as a collection of science resources because the information was not buried inside a proprietary app.

It also preserves the visual assumptions of institutional web design around 2002. Navigation graphics, narrow content areas, text links, image credits, and explicit “To Print” links all belonged to a web where people might genuinely print the lesson and carry it into class.

Ancient Web: HDTV Primer Modeled TV Antennas Instead of Trusting the Box

Antenna packaging has always had one technical weakness: the marketing department gets to print numbers on it.

HDTV Primer took the problem in a different direction. Rather than trusting manufacturer gain claims, the site’s author modeled a long list of commercially available TV antennas and published graphs showing how their performance changed across channels.

The page dates to October 2009 and reads like somebody got annoyed enough with antenna advertising to build the comparison they wanted to see.

Raw gain, net gain, and the part the box leaves out

The models were produced with NEC-4/EZNEC4-style antenna simulation software. The site explains why modeling can be useful: physical measurements are affected by surroundings, while a simulation can compare antennas in controlled free-space conditions.

More importantly, the page distinguishes between raw gain and net gain.

Raw gain describes how much energy the antenna captures in a direction. Net gain accounts for power lost because the antenna and transmission line are not perfectly impedance matched.

That difference produces some wonderfully inconvenient graphs.

The site compares indoor loops, log-periodic designs, Yagis, four-bay and eight-bay arrays, old Channel Master antennas, Winegard models, Antennas Direct products, VHF/UHF combination antennas, and rabbit ears. Several discontinued models remain in the charts, which has made the page more useful with age rather than less.

There are also practical discussions of beam width, side nulls, VHF performance from nominally UHF antennas, and why some published gain figures should be treated cautiously.

This is old-web technical culture at its best: not a product roundup, not affiliate links, and not a single “best antenna” answer.

It is somebody showing the curves.

Ancient Web: The $39 Experiment Mailed 100 Weird Letters to Corporations for Free Stuff

In February 2006, somebody spent two days writing 100 letters to 100 companies for one reason: to see which corporations would send him free stuff.

The name came from the cost of a roll of 100 stamps: $39. The author later admitted the real cost was closer to $52 after envelopes, paper, and the domain name, but by then the title had already won.

All 100 letters went into the mail on Friday, February 24, 2006 at 9:00 AM.

Then the website became the scoreboard.

Corporate customer service as an Internet spectator sport

The experiment lists every company, the product involved, whether a response arrived, what the company sent, and the actual letter used to provoke it.

Some letters are ordinary compliments or requests. Others get progressively stranger as the author realizes that writing 100 polite corporate letters would be unbearable.

Companies included food brands, hotels, rental-car firms, manufacturers, restaurants, and household-product companies. The author later singled out letters to Carmex, Nylabone, PowerBar, Energizer, Long John Silver’s, and Kentucky Fried Chicken among his favorites.

The first freebies started arriving March 2.

By the time the experiment officially ended on May 18, the site reported more than 60 responses, with 35 companies sending free products worth roughly $275.

Financially, this was not genius once the author’s time was included.

As a web artifact, it is excellent.

The whole project belongs to a particular Internet era when the natural response to a dumb personal question was not to make a five-second video about it. You bought a domain, made a table, documented every result, and left the entire experiment online for strangers twenty years later.

Ancient Web: The GHZ Sonic Museum Froze Two Decades of Hedgehog Games in Static HTML

The easiest way to forget twenty years of videogame history is to remember only the hits.

The GHZ Sonic Museum does the opposite. Its giant static index lists Sonic releases by year and by platform, starting in 1991 and running through 2010.

That means the familiar Mega Drive games sit beside things that are much easier to lose track of: Waku Waku Sonic Patrol Car, Sega Sonic Cosmo Fighter, Pico titles, Game Gear releases, Sonic’s Schoolhouse, N-Gage ports, Game.com versions, arcade games, mobile editions, and the strange side branches that never became franchise-defining landmarks.

A franchise before databases became normal

The page is basically a hand-built relational database expressed as links.

One section sorts by release year. Another reorganizes the same material by hardware: Mega Drive, Master System, Game Gear, Mega-CD, Pico, 32X, Saturn, Dreamcast, Neo Geo Pocket Color, Game Boy Advance, GameCube, PlayStation 2, Xbox, Nintendo DS, PSP, Wii, PC, mobile, and arcade.

That structure matters because videogame history is messy. One title can exist in several versions, regions, ports, compilations, and platforms. A chronological list answers one question. A hardware list answers another.

The museum also captures the web culture around the franchise. The footer dates the site’s written content and original graphics to 1997–2010 and identifies it plainly as an independent fan site rather than an official Sega property.

That distinction is part of the history. Before publishers built encyclopedic franchise wikis and searchable product databases, fans did the indexing themselves.

The result is useful now because obscure software often survives first as a name. Once somebody finds the exact title and platform, manuals, ROM discussions, screenshots, reviews, and preservation projects become much easier to locate.
