The page documents the temporary dewatering of the American Falls from June 12 through November 24, 1969, when a cofferdam diverted most of the American channel toward Horseshoe Falls so engineers could inspect the exposed rock face and talus.
It is one of those historical events that sounds exaggerated until the photographs and day-by-day notes start piling up.
A geological experiment at tourist scale
The project grew out of concern about erosion, rockfalls, and the long-term appearance of the American Falls. Congress authorized study work, the International Joint Commission became involved, and engineers eventually created the dry conditions needed for drilling, mapping, rock sampling, and slope investigation.
The chronology records construction details, survey work, drilling platforms, debris removal, tourist-access plans, and the practical problems of working beside one of the world’s most famous waterfalls.
It also preserves the grim side of exposing a riverbed. Human remains were recovered from the talus after the water was diverted.
Visitors eventually received limited access to part of the dry channel through a controlled walkway. For a short period, tourists could stand on ground that was normally under the Niagara River.
That makes the page useful in several directions at once: civil engineering, geology, environmental history, tourism, regional history, and the politics of altering a major natural landmark.
The photographs matter, but so does the chronology. A dramatic before-and-after picture cannot explain why a drilling platform appeared on a certain date or what engineers were measuring there.
