Roy Brander’s “My Cord-Cutting Adventure” begins with a complaint that cord-cutting should be about as complicated as buying a toaster. It was not. The page documents the weird middle period when cable television was becoming intolerable but streaming had not yet turned into twelve subscriptions wearing a trench coat.

Brander’s problem was not simply price. He describes paying for a minimal cable package and receiving a DVR that behaved worse than recording hardware he had owned years earlier: sluggish controls, reboots and truncated recordings.

That annoyance pushed him toward an antenna, network tuner and software DVR setup.

A Snapshot of the Cord-Cutting Transition

The page is useful now because it preserves the actual friction of the transition rather than the simplified story that everybody dumped cable and opened Netflix.

Brander discusses HDHomeRun hardware, over-the-air television, recording directories, Windows software, Kodi, troubleshooting and the practical question of whether a home-built setup was appropriate for ordinary people or only for computer hobbyists willing to spend evenings chasing bugs.

His conclusion was basically yes—with qualifications. The technology could work well, but older Windows versions and software choices created avoidable pain.

That is a very specific slice of home-computing history. The DVR had already taught viewers that television should pause, skip and record on demand. Cable companies had managed to make that experience worse. Cord-cutting then asked users to rebuild the missing functionality themselves.

The Personal Technical Essay

The page also belongs to a Web tradition that deserves more attention: the long personal technical write-up.

Brander does not merely recommend a product. He explains what annoyed him, what he tried, what broke, what eventually worked and what he would tell somebody attempting the same thing. The page later became material for a Calgary Unix Users Group presentation, which adds another layer of history around community technical knowledge.

Search engines are full of “best cord-cutting setup” pages written to sell whatever affiliate hardware is current this quarter. A personal account like this is different. It records the constraints of a particular moment and lets the reader see the reasoning.

That makes it useful even after the exact products age out.

The old Web was good at preserving these journeys because people wrote the whole damn thing down.

Ancient Web: AI.Planet Built a Virtual Ecosystem in Delphi

AI.Planet is the kind of old software project that makes modern AI branding look oddly narrow. Its goal was not a chatbot or an API. It was a whole artificial planet where weather, water, plants, animals and simple learning systems could interact inside a 3D environment.

The project appeared on SourceForge in the early 2000s and described itself as a virtual world for artificial intelligence. Users could modify terrain, add water, suns and moons, change the atmosphere, populate the world with plants and creatures, and then watch what happened.

The software was primarily written in Delphi using GLScene. Its old requirements page is a period piece by itself: Pentium III 800 MHz or faster, 256 MB of RAM, an OpenGL graphics card around the GeForce2 generation, and Windows 98, 2000 or XP.

The creatures actually had things to do

The changelog documents a surprisingly ambitious simulation. Versions added clouds, mountains, water, physics, creatures, tides from moons, wind from temperature changes, icebergs, snow, ducks, tigers, dolphins, fish mating and predator-prey relationships.

One release introduced turtles that remembered what happened when they attempted to eat different objects. The project reported individual turtles developing different food preferences based on their experiences. One preferred oranges, another fish, another crabs. Apparently even fake turtles can become picky.

The world could be explored from space, on foot, by following creatures or through a controllable robot. Later builds added visual object trackers and tools for inspecting the population.

Open source planetary tinkering

AI.Planet was released under the GPL, and the site’s tone is gloriously from the SourceForge era: if the fake planet does not do what you want, you have the source code. Add it yourself.

The project reached version 1.1.x after a long sequence of small releases. The changelog shows how software like this often evolved at the time: somebody adds a duck, somebody else adds a tiger, then someone realizes the icebergs are multiplying too quickly and fixes that before moving on to fire trees.

It is easy to look at a 2003 graphics engine and see obsolete technology. The more interesting view is that AI.Planet treated artificial intelligence as behavior embedded in a world. Learning meant an organism sensing, remembering and acting inside an environment rather than producing text in a browser window.

That makes the site useful again in 2026, even if the executable itself belongs to another hardware era. It preserves a different imagination of what home-computer AI experimentation could look like.

Ancient Web: The Ren and Stimpy Files Mapped Fandom Before the Web Won

In December 1994, finding Ren & Stimpy material online did not mean typing the title into a search box. It meant knowing which FTP server had the sounds, which university machine had the scripts, where the GIFs lived, what directory to enter and sometimes which decompressor you needed after the download finished.

The surviving guide is labeled Edition 58 and reads like a road map to an Internet that was still divided among services, machines and institutional servers. It lists FTP sites by host name and IP address, Gopher resources, text archives, sound collections and related material scattered across universities and public servers.

Fandom Was Infrastructure Work

A modern fan archive can assume the browser handles images, audio, compression and navigation. The 1994 guide could not.

It points users toward utilities for ARC, ARJ and LZH archives, image viewers for formats such as GIF, PCX, TIFF and TGA, and software for playing AU, WAV and VOC sound files. The list is partly about Ren & Stimpy and partly about assembling enough software to experience Ren & Stimpy on a personal computer.

That is what makes the document historically useful.

The content is not only fandom. It is a snapshot of how fandom moved through the network.

The guide mentions university FTP servers, Rutgers archives, Stanford resources, SunSITE and other hosts that would have been recognizable landmarks to people who lived online before the Web flattened navigation into hyperlinks and search results.

ASCII Art Belonged Here Too

Other surviving parts of the FAQ preserve signature blocks and ASCII artwork of characters including Mr. Horse and Powdered Toast Man. The artwork was designed to survive in plain-text environments where a four-line signature could be a tiny piece of identity.

That kind of material rarely survives in polished franchise histories because it was never official merchandise. It was what fans actually did with the communications tools they had.

The Ren and Stimpy Files are therefore more interesting than a simple cartoon FAQ. They document an Internet fandom ecosystem at the moment the Web was arriving but before it had swallowed everything else.

People were already trading sounds, pictures, scripts, jokes and references globally. They just had to know a lot more about where the hell the files were.

Ancient Web: The Corinth Computer Project Mapped a Roman City on the Early Web

Long before interactive archaeological maps became a normal museum feature, the Corinth Computer Project was trying to reconstruct an ancient city with survey instruments, AutoCAD, satellite imagery and a website that began serving research to the public in the 1990s.

The project itself began in 1988 under David Gilman Romano at the University of Pennsylvania Museum. Its original problem was wonderfully concrete: the Roman colony at Corinth was too large, complicated and chronologically layered to understand from excavated buildings alone. The team wanted a precise computer-generated map that could show how streets, structures and land divisions fit together across time.

That meant field work, not merely digitizing old books. Between 1988 and 1997 the project used electronic total stations to survey above-ground monuments, roads and structures. Back in the laboratory, those measurements were combined with topographical maps, architectural plans, aerial photography and eventually satellite imagery.

Archaeology met AutoCAD early

Romano had already been using AutoCAD in teaching during the 1980s. The obvious but then-unusual idea was to stop treating each building drawing as an isolated object and instead combine them into a larger digital representation of the city.

By the mid-1990s, the project had also become a web project. A 1997 version of the site described the work as a computerized architectural and topographical survey and made plans, methodology and research material available outside the laboratory. A conference paper later noted that the website had been maintained since roughly 1995-1996 and had become both a preliminary publication system and a teaching tool.

That distinction matters. This was not a glossy virtual tour built after the research was finished. The web was part of the research workflow while the project was still developing.

Why it still matters

The current Corinth Computer Project continues the work, but the old University of Pennsylvania address is a nice fossil from the point when academic researchers were discovering that the Web could be more than an electronic brochure. It could expose working maps, bibliographies, methods and preliminary results directly to students and other researchers.

The project eventually grew far beyond the original Roman street plan. It incorporated rural land division, multiple historical periods, aerial and satellite imagery, and regional landscape studies. More than 150 students have participated over the life of the project.

There is something particularly fitting about this old site surviving in the candidate list. Archaeologists study layers left behind by cities. Web archaeologists end up doing much the same thing with their research infrastructure.

Ancient Web: AstroNuclPhysics Is a One-Man Science Library With Frames, Black Holes and Japanese Gardens

AstroNuclPhysics is what happens when one person decides a normal personal homepage is nowhere near large enough. Vojtech Ullmann built an interconnected library covering nuclear physics, radiation, medical imaging, relativity, astrophysics, cosmology, electronics, philosophy, sacred music, photography and—because apparently the universe still had room left—a Japanese garden.

The site’s structure is immediately old-school. It openly explains how to navigate its frames: lists on the left, documents on the right, with full-screen versions available for readers who want to concentrate on one title.

Nuclear Medicine Next to Black Holes

The scientific core is substantial. Sections cover radiation detection, X-ray diagnostics, scintigraphy, radiotherapy, radiobiology, antimatter, cosmic radiation, gravitational lenses, black holes, wormholes and cosmology.

Ullmann also tries to connect disciplines rather than keeping them in separate boxes. A medical reader may encounter nuclear physics and particle interactions; a physicist may end up reading about biological radiation effects or medical diagnosis.

That cross-linking feels less like a modern course platform and more like being allowed into somebody’s enormous private notebook.

The author says the pages are continuously revised, acknowledges damaged formulas and imperfect conversions, and explains that many of the images were personally drawn or photographed. That visible roughness is part of the site’s character. It is not pretending to be a frictionless publishing product. It is a working body of material assembled over time.

Then the Website Wanders Off

The further you explore, the more personal the project becomes. Alongside astrophysics are pages about fireplaces, a smokehouse, a Japanese garden, electronics, Indian and Tibetan music, Orthodox and Western Christian music, photography and personal memories.

There are also essays on science, religion, society and politics. Those are explicitly presented as the author’s own views rather than as extensions of the scientific material.

This mixture is exactly what old personal websites did well. A modern publisher would split these subjects into separate brands because analytics says the audience for scintigraphy may not convert well on pergolas. AstroNuclPhysics does not care.

It reflects the structure of one person’s interests rather than the structure of an advertising market.

For researchers, that makes the site valuable in two ways. The technical material can still be useful, while the site itself documents a style of independent scientific publishing that is becoming rarer: one domain, one author, years of work, and absolutely no concern that black holes and backyard construction might confuse the algorithm.

Ancient Web: Hallowed Haunting Grounds Preserves 33 Years of One Halloween Yard Haunt

For thirty-three Halloween seasons, one home in Studio City, California became the Hallowed Haunting Grounds. The physical display ended in 2005, but the website remains as a surprisingly rich record of a neighborhood haunt that started in 1973.

The site says hundreds of visitors made the display part of their yearly tradition. This was not a commercial haunted house with timed tickets and branded merch. It was a long-running home display built around illusions, ghostly scenes and atmosphere.

A Dead Attraction With a Living Website

That makes the site interesting in a very literal preservation sense. The attraction is gone. The people who remember standing in front of it are aging. Physical props can disappear. But the Web still holds maps, scene descriptions, audio and photographs.

One surviving page describes the “Nursery Girl”: a childlike ghost floating in a room while a music box plays, with downloadable WAV and MP3 audio. Another preserves the souvenir guide handed to adult visitors during the final 2005 presentation, complete with a map linking the different areas of the haunt.

This is exactly the sort of local cultural history that tends to vanish because nobody thinks of it as history until twenty years later.

The Timeline Is the Story

The site’s own dates give the project unusual weight. The first appearance was October 31, 1973. The final manifestation was October 31, 2005. The site itself continued afterward for historical and correspondence purposes.

It also became a memorial. The homepage remembers Gary Corb, described as a friend and inspiration, who died in 2017. That turns the archive into something more personal than a gallery of Halloween effects.

A modern social feed could show photos from a haunt. This site preserves the haunt as a place: what scenes existed, how visitors moved through them, what sounds played and who helped build the thing.

That distinction matters.

The Web is very good at keeping famous history visible. Sites like Hallowed Haunting Grounds demonstrate its stranger and more valuable ability: preserving the history of something intensely local that mattered to a few hundred people every October for three decades.

Ancient Web: Comic Book Plus Built a Massive Free Public-Domain Comics Library

Comic Book Plus is one of those sites where the numbers stop sounding like a hobby project. It holds tens of thousands of books and issues, with public-domain comics joined by comic strips, pulp fiction, fanzines and old-time radio.

The site describes itself as a free and legal archive, with a strong emphasis on Golden Age comics and a growing amount of Silver Age material. Visitors can read books online without paying, while free registration opens downloading and forum participation.

The Interesting Part Is the Curation

Scanning old comics is only the beginning of a project like this. Somebody has to identify titles, organize publishers, track publication history, separate material that appears to be public domain from material that is not, and keep tens of thousands of files navigable.

Comic Book Plus exposes that work instead of hiding it. Publisher pages include date ranges, issue counts and warnings about titles or characters that should not be uploaded because their status differs from surrounding material. The site also maintains genre categories, a virtual newsstand and listening guides for radio material.

That makes it more than a pile of scans.

It is an index built around a difficult historical collection.

The Web as a Preservation Machine

Old comics are a good example of why independent archives matter. Physical copies deteriorate, disappear into collections or become expensive enough that casual readers never touch them. A scanned public-domain issue can instead become available to somebody researching advertising, printing, wartime culture, forgotten artists or a character that vanished seventy years ago.

The site also illustrates the messy reality of copyright preservation work. “Old” does not automatically mean public domain. Comic Book Plus repeatedly warns users to verify rights and trademark issues for themselves, even while trying to keep the archive within public-domain boundaries.

That caution is part of the value. A serious archive needs more than enthusiasm.

By 2026 the collection had grown to roughly fifty thousand books, an absurd amount of material to have accumulated around a website that still feels closer to an enthusiast archive than a streaming platform.

The modern Web often treats cultural material as inventory inside a subscription service. Comic Book Plus represents another tradition: preserve it, classify it, let people read it, and keep adding to the shelves.

Ancient Web: Michaelsoft Binbows Was a Real Used-PC Shop and the Joke Was Exactly What You Think

Yes, Michaelsoft Binbows was real.

A surviving page from Alf’s Room documents the Japanese used-computer and parts shop with photographs taken in Maebashi City, Gunma Prefecture on July 20, 2001. The name was a parody of Microsoft Windows, and the logo apparently decided subtlety was for cowards.

The page presents the discovery as a conversation between characters reacting to the storefront. First comes the suspicious name. Then the realization that the logo resembles the Windows mark reversed. Then the obvious question: is Microsoft going to complain about this?

This is exactly the sort of tiny local oddity the old Web was excellent at preserving.

A Computer Shop Turned Internet Folklore

According to the page, Michaelsoft Binbows was a used PC and parts shop. The photographs show the storefront and its branding rather than an invented meme reconstructed years later.

The site says the shop appears to have closed around the end of 2002.

That might have been the end of it. Instead, the page remained online.

Years later, the name resurfaced through Internet curiosity and video coverage. The page itself notes in a 2021 update that it was featured in a Nick Robinson YouTube video, and it links to fan art inspired by the discovery.

A local shop sign photographed in 2001 had become digital folklore twenty years later because one person put the pictures on a personal website and never removed them.

Why Pages Like This Matter

There is no grand historical claim here. Michaelsoft Binbows did not transform computing. It sold used hardware under a ridiculous name.

But Web history is not only standards, companies and famous launches. It is also people photographing things because they were funny and putting them online where strangers could find them years later.

Alf’s Room itself dates its copyright range from 1996 through 2021, another reminder of how long some personal sites quietly persisted while platforms rose and vanished around them.

This page did exactly what a good personal webpage should do: it noticed something weird, documented it, and accidentally made sure the joke outlived the store.

Ancient Web: A 12-Year-Old’s 1999 Page on Osiris and Isis Is Still Online

One of the best things the old Web preserved was work that nobody would bother turning into a platform today. Guardian’s Egypt still hosts a mythology page written in 1999 by Whitney Bayuk, age 12, about Osiris and Isis.

The page is exactly what it says it is: a young student’s explanation of the Egyptian myth, presented with artwork, a bibliography and links back into the site’s Ancient Egypt Kids Connection.

Nothing about it has been sanded down into anonymous educational content.

A Student Voice Frozen in HTML

The essay introduces Geb, Nut, Isis, Nephthys, Set and Osiris, then tells the familiar story of Osiris’s murder, Isis’s search, the restoration of his body and Horus’s eventual conflict with Set.

The writing is direct and personal. It includes phrases such as “I will talk of this myth in this essay” and ends by saying the author hopes the reader enjoyed it and learned something.

That may sound ordinary, but ordinary student work almost never survives online for twenty-seven years.

The page also credits a sculpture image to Whitney and lists print sources in a short bibliography. A copyright notice dates the work to 1999.

When Educational Websites Had Rooms for Kids

Guardian’s Egypt reflects an older model of educational publishing. Instead of one standardized content system, sites often had hand-built subareas: kids’ pages, essays, image galleries, historical notes and contributor material.

The result could be uneven, but it also gave individual voices space to exist.

For web-history researchers, this page is useful precisely because it is not famous. It shows what children, teachers and hobbyist site owners were putting online during the late 1990s, when publishing a school-age essay to the open Web still felt like a meaningful act.

For anyone studying how the Web became social long before social media, pages like this are evidence hiding in plain sight.
