Ancient Web: Tatiana.info Is a 2000-Era Fan Site That Never Became a Feed

Tatiana.info is a surviving example of the fan site as its own little publishing operation. Created in 2000 for Mexican singer and children’s television host Tatiana, it has chronology, album information, news, photographs, multimedia and fan material arranged as a website rather than poured into one corporate feed.

The site identifies itself as independent and unofficial. It was created by Dan Tobias on August 23, 2000, and its footer records a last modification in March 2018. Most of the material is available in both English and Spanish, which already makes it more deliberate than the average celebrity tribute page of the period.

Tatiana’s career stretches back to the 1980s, and the site tries to organize that history rather than merely collect pictures. There are chronological pages, album and recording information, television and video references, news items and sections devoted to her work for children.

The multimedia is very 2000

A modern fan account would probably embed streaming clips and repost promotional photographs. Tatiana.info belongs to a different technical era.

It offers MP3 samples, downloadable Windows themes, a screensaver and even pages featuring 3-D rotating cubes. Those artifacts are as useful for dating the site as any copyright notice. They preserve the moment when giving visitors a downloadable desktop theme was a perfectly normal way to express fandom.

The photo archive is especially notable because the site says many images were supplied by Tatiana herself. It also preserves a 2001 television appearance in which she acknowledged the website, giving the unofficial fan project an unusual direct connection to its subject.

Fan sites were indexes, not just reactions

The old independent fan site often functioned as a reference work. Someone had to decide how to divide the material, name the pages, maintain a chronology, keep outgoing links alive and explain context for visitors who did not already know everything.

That work is easy to underestimate now because social platforms make celebrity fandom look like an endless present tense: today’s clip, today’s photo, today’s argument. Tatiana.info accumulated information into a structure that a reader could navigate years later.

Its bilingual organization also broadened the audience without handing translation or discovery to an algorithm. The webmaster simply built both doors.

Nothing about the design needs to be modernized to remain understandable. The old graphics, page menus and downloadable extras are part of the historical evidence. They show what a serious fan project looked like when possessing a domain and learning enough HTML to maintain it were themselves signs of commitment.

In 2026, that may be the site’s greatest value. The subject is Tatiana, but the artifact is also the independent fan Web.

Ancient Web: Krazer Lasers Is a Surplus-Lab-Gear Rabbit Hole

Krazer Lasers is what happens when somebody acquires unusual scientific hardware and, instead of merely putting it on a shelf, documents the strange machine for the rest of the Internet. The site is full of surplus lasers, optical experiments, Tesla-coil material, rocketry and electronics that would otherwise be scattered across old auction listings and dead forum posts.

The homepage was last updated in April 2016 and divides the collection into Lasers, Tesla Coils, High Power Rocketry, GPS Tracking and Other Projects. It feels like a classic personal technical site because almost every path leads to another machine with photographs, model numbers and a story about where it came from.

The laser pages are the main event

One early project called RYG Laser I combined red and green light into a shared beam. It was not presented as the final word on anything; the project became a stepping stone toward a later RGB setup. That evolution is useful because the pages preserve the builder’s changing equipment and ambitions instead of showing only a polished end result.

Another page documents an ALC-60X argon-ion laser, the sort of large blue-green source that once appeared in equipment such as commercial imaging systems. The site photographs the unit, identifies the visible output lines and records its condition as a piece of surplus laboratory gear.

There are also pages for a 473 nm blue source intended for laser-show use and other optical hardware that was exotic enough to be memorable before compact semiconductor lasers became commonplace.

The important thing here is not reproducing the experiments. High-power lasers and high-voltage equipment are dangerous, and the old hobby-web habit of putting every electrical detail on a page is not automatically a good invitation to copy it. The archival value is in seeing the equipment, terminology and culture around it.

The site keeps wandering

That is where Krazer Lasers gets fun. The laser collection spills into Tesla coils. The electronics spill into high-power rocketry. Rocketry leads to GPS tracking. Other pages document whatever technical problem happened to become interesting next.

This kind of website is extremely hard to replace once it disappears because much of the subject matter is not covered well by manufacturers. Old laboratory equipment changes hands after support ends. Parts get modified. Model names become difficult to search. A personal page with clear photographs can become the most useful surviving identification reference by accident.

The site therefore works as both a hobby archive and a catalog of technological leftovers. It captures the period when interesting hardware routinely escaped laboratories, copy shops, industrial equipment and auctions into the hands of people willing to reverse-engineer what they had bought.

Modern video channels cover similar territory, but a page of labeled photographs and text remains vastly easier to search ten years later.

Ancient Web: Flying Dreams Is a Family Domain From the Personal Web

FlyingDreams.org is not trying to become a media company. It is James and Linda Young’s domain, and that simple fact makes it feel almost radical now. The homepage is a doorway into family photos, personal blogs, television fandom, travel pages, seasonal material and whatever else they decided belonged on their piece of the Web.

The domain dates to 2000. Its front page still behaves like the personal homepages that once made up a huge portion of the Web: a collection of image links pointing toward separate rooms rather than a single endlessly updating stream.

There is an album. There is an “On the Road” section. There are seasonal pages. Linda has a nostalgia area and television-related sites. James has a model blog. The site’s description has long highlighted pages devoted to shows including Remember WENN, Lassie and The Good Life.

A domain instead of a profile

That distinction is worth noticing.

A social-media profile asks a person to pour everything into one chronological container owned by somebody else. A personal domain can be divided however its owners want. Family photos do not need to sit next to television research. A Christmas page can live in its own subsite. A travel diary can have a different structure from a fan page.

Flying Dreams uses subdomains and separate sections exactly that way. The site map grew according to interests, not according to a product manager’s engagement model.

The design is also wonderfully unconcerned with current fashion. Navigation is built from graphics and plain links. The homepage announces, essentially, WELCOME TO OUR DOMAIN. That phrase belongs to an Internet in which owning a domain felt less like operating a brand and more like owning a small weird house with a mailbox out front.

The value is the accumulation

No individual page has to be historically monumental. The importance is cumulative. Years of family activity, fandom, photographs and side interests become a cultural artifact because they stayed in one publicly addressable place.

The site is particularly useful as a reminder that the old Web was not only computer manuals and university projects. A huge amount of it consisted of ordinary people learning enough HTML to publish the things they cared about.

Modern platforms made publishing easier, but they also made personal archives more disposable. Accounts get closed, feeds reorder themselves, image hosts vanish and a decade of activity becomes something you can no longer navigate except by date.

A personal domain can simply keep being a personal domain.

Ancient Web: PuTTY Kept Its 1990s Terminal Client Alive

PuTTY is one of those pieces of software that crossed the line from old utility to permanent infrastructure so quietly that millions of people barely noticed. It started in the 1990s, survived multiple generations of Windows, and in 2026 its official download page still looks like a competent engineer made a website and then refused to let anybody ruin it.

Simon Tatham began the project in the summer of 1996 because the Windows terminal programs he was using had poor or inconsistent terminal emulation. The first version was a private Telnet client called STel.

By 1998, remote systems were increasingly moving toward SSH. Tatham added an SSH-1 backend, generalized the networking code and renamed the program PuTTY. In early 1999 he put it on the Web for public download.

The first public distribution was almost comically small by today’s standards: one executable and a web page. No installer. No giant framework. No account system. Download putty.exe and run it.

The little executable grew a family

Contributors and real-world needs gradually expanded PuTTY into a suite. PSCP added secure file copying. Later came Plink, the Pageant authentication agent and PuTTYgen for key generation. SSH-2 support followed as the protocol became necessary.

The development history is refreshingly unromantic. Tatham has written that there was little grand roadmap. Features usually appeared because he needed them or because somebody else wrote them and sent a patch.

That is a very old open-source growth pattern: solve an itch, publish the code, discover that thousands of other people have the same itch.

Still shipping in 2026

The current release is PuTTY 0.85, dated August 16, 2026. The download page still provides individual executables, MSI installers, source archives, signatures, documentation and checksum files. It supports modern 64-bit x86 and Arm systems while still exposing artifacts from its long history.

The project also keeps old release pages online. A 1999 release page, for example, remains available but now carries a security warning explaining that known vulnerabilities were fixed in later versions. That is preservation done responsibly: the old bits remain visible without pretending they are safe choices today.

Even the icons carry history. Tatham has explained that their limited palette came from the days when 16-color GUI conventions mattered, and that the team has repeatedly declined offers to modernize them beyond recognition. He calls the style “reassuringly old-fashioned.”

That phrase could describe the whole project.

PuTTY’s value to the Ancient Web is not that it is abandoned. It is the opposite. It demonstrates what happens when old software and its old-style website remain maintained instead of being replaced every few years for cosmetic reasons.

Ancient Web: Paul Cooijmans Built an Internet Empire Around IQ Tests, Music, Tarot and Himself

Paul Cooijmans’ website is difficult to summarize because Paul Cooijmans appears to have solved that problem by simply putting everything on it.

The site contains high-range intelligence tests, psychometric writing, IQ societies, music, prose, interviews, photography, philosophy, autobiographical notes, occult material, running advice and enough personal documentation to make most About pages look cowardly.

The central subject is high-range intelligence testing. Cooijmans says he began designing tests in the mid-1990s to explore measurement beyond the ceilings of ordinary psychological tests. He later founded several IQ societies and built a substantial body of test material, statistical writing and commentary around the subject.

Then It Keeps Going

Cooijmans studied classical guitar and composition at a conservatory from 1986 to 1993, and his site catalogs a large body of compositions. Some entries include instrumentation, dates, durations and links to performances or recordings.

There is also fiction, autobiography and photography. The photo archive reaches back to analog images from the late 1970s. Autobiographical essays cover everything from conservatory years to learning computers in the mid-1990s.

One particularly good detail: Cooijmans writes that his first computer course taught MS-DOS and WordPerfect 5.1 shortly after Windows 95 appeared, with the instructor insisting Windows was merely a shell and DOS was what really mattered. That is an extremely specific little fossil of how personal computing was taught at the time.

The Personal Web With the Safety Off

The site becomes stranger the further you go. There are pages about tarot, occult interpretation, philosophy and future information supposedly transmitted through “t-mail,” described as email that can cross time.

There is also an FAQ that manages to turn basic email etiquette into a miniature philosophical system, including instructions to ask one question at a time and a joking public-health warning before contacting the author.

You do not have to accept Cooijmans’ conclusions—or even know what to do with some of them—to appreciate the site as an Internet artifact.

It is almost aggressively personal.

Modern profiles reduce people to a short bio, a feed and whatever content performs well. This site does the opposite. It accumulates a person’s interests, arguments, creative work, opinions, photos and intellectual obsessions over decades and leaves the visitor to deal with the whole thing.

That is one of the old Web’s most important forms: not a brand, not a channel, not a creator funnel. A person with a domain.

Ancient Web: Cambridge Clarion Built and Measured a Solar Kettle

The Cambridge Clarion’s solar-kettle page is a good antidote to the modern Internet’s endless supply of projects that somehow work perfectly on the first try. This one boils water, measures what happened, admits what went wrong and then spends most of the page investigating the failures.

Stephen Hewitt published the experiment in October 2022. The device is a one-meter-long parabolic trough about 80 centimeters wide. A reflective sheet concentrates sunlight onto a 22 mm copper pipe containing roughly a mug’s worth of water.

Under good conditions it could heat that water in around ten minutes.

That is the headline result. The much more interesting part is everything after it.

The page measures instead of merely claiming

Temperature was recorded with a K-type thermocouple inserted into the pipe. The article includes heating curves, a cooling curve and estimates of net heating power and heat loss.

Around 50°C, Hewitt estimated at least roughly 215 watts per meter of net heating power under one test condition. He then worked through the implications of heat loss near 90°C and estimated the optical efficiency of the reflector, while repeatedly noting the assumptions and uncertainties in those calculations.

This is old-school web publishing in spirit even though the article itself is much newer than GeoCities. The evidence is on the page. You can see the apparatus, see the graphs and follow the reasoning.

The kettle also tries to attack the operator

The prototype has problems.

The most dramatic is that it can eject much of its water when boiling. The page plainly labels that as hazardous and says the design in its photographed form is not suitable for taking water all the way to boiling. The short spout can also dribble scalding water as the contents expand.

Other problems are less theatrical but more instructive: water temperature varies along the copper tube, some reflected sunlight misses the pipe, the reflector geometry is imperfect, filling and pouring are awkward, and thermal expansion of the polypropylene reflector may alter its shape.

Each flaw becomes another engineering question instead of being cropped out of the photographs.

Why this belongs in the Ancient Web pile

The best independent technical pages are not valuable because they are old. They are valuable because they preserve the full thought process that commercial content usually compresses into a list of tips.

This page records dimensions, materials, measured curves, wrong assumptions, physical hazards and proposed revisions. It is exactly the sort of document another experimenter could discover years later and use as a starting point rather than repeating every mistake.

That was one of the Web’s original superpowers: strangers leaving useful laboratory notebooks in public.

Ancient Web: West Mansion Kept Splatterhouse Alive When the Series Was Basically Dead

West Mansion exists because somebody went looking for a good Splatterhouse website and discovered there basically wasn’t one. So in June 2001, Rob built it himself.

That decision turned into one of those fan projects that outlived entire eras of the Web. The site has moved hosts, survived the shutdown of IGN’s hosted-site network, spent roughly a decade archived, reopened in 2021 and was still being updated in 2026.

More Than a Game List

The obvious material is here: the original arcade game, the TurboGrafx-16 and PC Engine versions, Splatterhouse 2 and 3, Wanpaku Graffiti, the 2010 reboot and other releases.

But the better reason to explore West Mansion is the material around the games.

There are character pages, screenshots, weapons, codes, music, interviews, artwork, fan fiction, emulation notes, trivia and sections devoted to fan-made games and ROM hacks. The site even maintains a “Graveyard” for fan projects that disappeared or died during development.

That graveyard is particularly good preservation work. Abandoned fan games normally vanish twice: first when development stops, then again when the old forum, host or download link disappears. West Mansion records names, creators and what survived. In some cases it preserves beta builds with permission.

A Fan Site Became the Historical Record

The site’s own history says it first appeared on GeoCities before moving to Classicgaming in 2001. When IGN’s hosted sites shut down in 2009, West Mansion relocated again. In 2011 it was archived due to burnout and personal circumstances, then officially reopened on Halloween 2021.

That hosting history is almost as interesting as the game history.

Fan sites were often the only places documenting obscure versions, regional differences, cancelled projects and community creations. When those sites disappeared, search engines did not magically preserve the knowledge somewhere else.

West Mansion survived long enough to become an archive of the culture that formed around Splatterhouse as well as the games themselves.

There is a lesson for modern webmasters in that. A small site does not need millions of visitors to become important. It needs a subject nobody else is documenting as thoroughly, enough stubbornness to survive host migrations, and files that remain understandable ten or twenty years later.

Ancient Web: Thrower Was a Pioneering Knife-Throwing Community

Thrower is a preserved chunk of the hobby Internet from the period when a niche community could be a mailing list, a giant hand-maintained page and a forest of outgoing links instead of a group hidden inside somebody else’s platform.

Matthew J. Rapaport created the site in the 1990s around the subject of throwing weapons, especially sport knife throwing. The archive’s history says its earliest dated material goes back to 1996 and describes Thrower as the first substantial Internet collection devoted to knife throwing.

The page is enormous by modern landing-page standards. It links to articles, clubs, competitions, mailing-list information, books, manufacturers, historical throwing implements and related hobby sites. Knives dominated the discussion, but the page also cataloged things such as axes, spears, atlatls, bolas, boomerangs and slings.

Before social media, there was the mailing list

The website grew alongside the thrower email list. Participants traded experiences, discussed equipment and organized around a subject obscure enough that finding another enthusiast locally was not guaranteed.

The page later added an EZBoard forum and proudly described it as a technological innovation. That sentence alone dates the site better than a footer ever could.

Event listings preserve another layer of history. Old competition notices include dates, entry fees, phone numbers and regional organizations. They are no longer useful as schedules, obviously, but they show how the online community connected directly to physical clubs and events.

An archive with permission

Rapaport eventually stopped maintaining the site and took it offline in 2006. Christian Thiel created the surviving static archive in 2014 with Rapaport’s permission so the community would not lose the material.

That provenance makes this more interesting than a random scraped copy. The archive deliberately preserves the original site’s shape, including its dated links and assumptions about how people navigated the Web. Where linked sites have vanished, the archive sometimes notes the original address or points toward replacement information.

Thrower is therefore valuable even to somebody with no interest in throwing anything sharper than a paper airplane. It demonstrates the old specialist-web pattern extremely well: one obsessed maintainer, a mailing list, contributors from different places, hand-edited articles, links to every known related resource and an assumption that knowledge should remain findable.

That model built a surprising amount of the useful early Web.

Ancient Web: her.st Is a Three-Person Fortress of Linux, XMPP and Machine-Cult Aesthetics

her.st looks less like a startup and more like somebody found a forgotten terminal in a concrete bunker and decided to host services from it. The homepage mixes ASCII art, Linux, privacy, XMPP, philosophy, hosting and an elaborate “Fortress” identity that is either dead serious, performance art, or correctly understands that the old Internet was more fun when those categories overlapped.

The site says it was founded in 2022 and has three members. Membership involves contributing to the Fortress, helping with projects or its library, and connecting through tools such as SSH and WireGuard.

Public Services Without Platform Brain

The practical side is real. her.st advertises hosting, an XMPP server and bot, radio material, ATOM feeds, public services and private services for members. It also maintains machine-generated transcript archives for Terence McKenna and Alan Watts.

The technical interests listed on the site include Linux, self-hosting, .NET, Go, Python, privacy and security. That is a pretty recognizable small-systems stack even when wrapped in language about fortresses, steel and immortal machines.

The contrast is the charm.

A corporate hosting company would spend weeks removing every trace of personality from this page. her.st appears to have spent that time adding more.

The Small Internet Still Exists

What makes the site relevant to Ancient Web is not its age. It is actually young. The interesting part is that it deliberately continues an older Web tradition: small groups running their own infrastructure, giving the site a distinct identity, publishing text directly and treating services like XMPP, SSH and feeds as normal parts of online life.

The visual design helps. There are huge blocks of monospace art, direct navigation, minimal polish and almost no attempt to resemble a modern SaaS landing page.

This is useful evidence that “old Web” does not have to mean “abandoned Web.” Some people are still building this way because they prefer ownership, interoperability and weirdness over platform conformity.

The site’s ideology will not be everybody’s cup of tea. That is also part of the point. Independent sites are interesting partly because they are not required to sand themselves down until everybody agrees they are inoffensive.

Three people can still build a strange little corner of the Internet, give it a mythology and wire it together with protocols that have been around for decades.

Ancient Web: Turbulence Turned Invisible Air Currents Into LED Light

Some personal technical websites survive because they documented a machine. This one survives because somebody decided invisible air currents deserved a four-foot glowing acrylic monument.

The centerpiece is a work called Turbulence. It is a four-foot acrylic column illuminated internally with red, green and blue LEDs. An air-current sensor detects movements too subtle for a person to feel and changes the light in response.

The page does not bury the idea under an artist statement the size of a grant application. It shows the sculpture, shows the sensor hardware, and explains the physical trick.

Making turbulence visible

The sensor contains a small five-watt heat source that produces a column of rising warm air. Small currents in the surrounding room disturb that rising air, changing it from a more orderly laminar flow into turbulent motion. The electronics detect those changes and translate them into color.

One photograph uses cigarette smoke to make the same rising turbulent motion visible to the eye. Other images show the brass support structure and close-up views of the acrylic column.

The result sits somewhere between sculpture, instrument and science demonstration. It does not merely blink LEDs according to a programmed pattern. The room itself becomes an input device.

A tiny site with a broad curiosity

The page also points toward other unusual projects: an atmospheric acoustic observatory, a page about Charles Babbage and sound, and experiments involving lasers and Brownian motion. The site feels less like a portfolio assembled for a hiring manager and more like the workbench of somebody who kept noticing physical phenomena and wondering whether electronics could expose them.

The Turbulence page is dated February 8, 2011 and says related Comfort Light works were displayed in galleries in Bethesda, Maryland. Its design is almost aggressively simple: headings, photographs, explanation, links. There is no infinite scroll, no modal newsletter demand and no attempt to make the sculpture compete with the website around it.

That simplicity helps the page age well. The interesting object is still the object.

For web archaeology, this is exactly the sort of modest technical-art page worth preserving in memory. A one-off physical experiment can disappear even faster than software. Once the builder stops maintaining the site, the photographs and explanation may be the only practical record that it existed.
