Ancient Web: TEXTFILES.COM Saved the Under Construction GIF

There was a time when admitting your website was unfinished required a tiny animated construction worker, a striped barricade, several flashing lights, and perhaps a bulldozer that looked like it had been drawn during lunch.

TEXTFILES.COM preserved thousands of these graphics in one gloriously unreasonable pile.

The Under Construction banner was one of the defining visual habits of the personal Web. A page owner would add one while building a new section, redesigning a homepage, or simply acknowledging that whatever was there was not yet done.

Which, in retrospect, was refreshingly accurate.

Modern websites silently change underneath users. The old Web put on a hard hat and announced the mess.

Archivist Jason Scott discussed this collection during his DEF CON 19 talk about web preservation. He described having around ten thousand Under Construction images and joked that putting all of them on one page could crash browsers. The absurd scale is the point: these were not one standard icon copied everywhere. People remixed the idea endlessly.

There were workers digging. Workers hammering. Rotating road signs. Blinking warning lights. Skeletons. Cartoon characters. Heavy equipment. Flaming text. Objects of uncertain purpose moving back and forth forever because animated GIF technology had arrived and restraint had not.

What looks like kitsch now was also a shared visual language.

A newcomer did not need instructions. Yellow-and-black stripes meant the page was still being built. The graphic connected millions of unrelated homepages through a visual convention that nobody’s design system had approved.

That is why the collection matters in 2026.

An archive of page graphics preserves a part of Internet history that screenshots and text dumps miss. HTML tells you what links existed. The GIFs tell you what the place felt like.

The same little files continue turning up in modern retro sites, software documentation, art projects, and essays about early web culture. They survived because people remember them immediately even when they cannot remember the homepage where they first saw one.

Ancient Web: Electronixandmore Grew Out of an AOL Antique Radio Page

Electronixandmore has the sort of origin story that used to be normal on the Web: a kid liked antique radios, AOL gave him a few megabytes and a page builder, and twenty-seven years later the thing had become an electronics museum.

Jon Stanley says the site began in late 1999 as Jon’s Antique Radios, built with AOL 5.0’s Easy Designer to show his small radio collection. The original version had the fixed tables and download-time problems that came with page generators of the period, so in 2000 he rebuilt it by hand.

Using Notepad.

That detail tells you nearly everything about the site.

The collection expanded from radios into televisions, computers, test equipment, vacuum tubes, calculators, telephones, electronic components, and homebuilt projects. Schematics and graphics were often made with simple tools such as Microsoft Paint because small files mattered when people were still measuring web pages against dial-up connections.

The AOL storage eventually became too small. Electronixandmore.com was registered in August 2002, and the site continued growing under its own name.

Then something especially Ancient Web happened: it stayed recognizable.

Stanley says the general look remained largely unchanged for about ten years. By 2012 the quantity of material had finally become difficult to maintain, so he learned PHP and moved much of the collection into server-generated pages backed by a database. The automation improved. The basic purpose did not.

There is a useful distinction here between a retro-styled website and an old website that simply kept working.

Electronixandmore belongs to the second category.

The site also documents the way expertise used to accumulate online. Stanley’s interest in vacuum tubes led him into vintage radios, then repair work, then engineering. The website expanded alongside that learning process instead of appearing later as a polished portfolio explaining it in reverse.

You can see the sediment layers.

That makes the site valuable beyond the individual radios. It preserves one person’s transition from AOL homepage tools to hand-coded HTML to PHP while simultaneously preserving the hardware he was studying.

Ancient Web: Karl Sims Evolved Creatures Before Generative AI Had a Name

Long before “generative” became a product category, Karl Sims was letting populations of blocky virtual organisms mutate until some of them figured out how to swim, walk, jump, follow targets, and fight over a green cube.

The centerpiece for anyone arriving from the Ancient Web is Evolved Virtual Creatures, Sims’s 1994 work. The creatures were not animated one limb at a time by an artist. Their bodies and control systems were encoded, varied, tested, selected, copied, combined, and mutated across generations inside a simulation.

Give the population a task and evolution did the rest.

The results still look strange because evolution has no obligation to produce a sensible character rig. Some creatures crawl. Some tumble. Some discover motions that are effective without looking remotely like anything a human animator would have designed.

That is the interesting part.

Sims was working at the intersection of computer graphics, artificial life, and evolutionary computation when those fields still required an explanation before the demonstration. His site preserves not only videos but the technical trail behind them: the SIGGRAPH 1994 paper “Evolving Virtual Creatures,” earlier work on artificial evolution for graphics, procedural models, particle animation, and interactive evolution.

The surrounding career makes the archive even better. Sims studied computer graphics at the MIT Media Lab, worked at Thinking Machines Corporation, founded visual-effects software company GenArts, and created interactive museum installations including Genetic Images and Galápagos. The latter let museum visitors become the selection pressure by choosing which forms reproduced.

A quarter-century of AI marketing has made it easy to forget how old the underlying urge is: build a system that can search a possibility space humans would never explore manually, then see what crawls out.

Sims was doing that with creatures in 1994.

The page matters in 2026 because it leaves the papers, demonstrations, and artwork together. You can move directly from a bizarre walking pile of blocks to the actual research describing how it was generated. That continuity is increasingly rare. Modern summaries tend to clip the video, call it an early AI experiment, and sever it from the engineering that made it interesting.

MedievalWarfare.info feels like somebody took a shelf of medieval-history books, cut the index cards loose, and connected every subject with blue hyperlinks.

The site covers a huge spread of material: battles, fortifications, sieges, armour, crusades, military organization, logistics, communications, re-enactment, historical figures, and related source material. Individual pages keep branching into narrower subjects, which branch again into castles, campaigns, equipment, documents, and external references.

This is not minimalism.

It is the old specialist Web approach to information: if another page might help, link it.

The result is a site that rewards wandering.

A reference site built sideways

Modern publishing tends to organize history as a sequence of articles optimized around individual search queries.

MedievalWarfare.info behaves more like a cross-referenced handbook.

A page about siege warfare does not exist by itself. It points toward fortifications, water supply, logistics, mining, communications, military organization, historical battles, and surviving castles. Other sections jump sideways into crusaders, armour, books, re-enactment, and medieval life.

That structure matters because history is mostly relationships.

A castle design makes more sense when you understand the problems it was meant to solve. A campaign makes more sense when you understand transport and supplies. A piece of armour makes more sense when placed beside the weapons and tactics of the same period.

The site’s dense link structure tries to preserve those connections.

It is also visibly from an earlier web-design generation. Tables, text links, small images, old navigation conventions, and pages that assume the reader will tolerate a lot of information on one screen are all part of the experience.

Some of the historical claims are broad enough that a careful reader should verify them against stronger academic sources. That is normal for a hobbyist reference site and worth saying explicitly. The value here is not that every sentence should be treated as final authority.

The value is the scale of the hand-built subject map.

Sites like this show how enthusiast publishing worked before every topic was compressed into the same content-management template. Somebody could build a sprawling reference work with its own internal logic, keep expanding it, and let readers discover subjects through links rather than an algorithmic feed.

Ancient Web: NTSC-TV.com Explains Why Analog Color Television Was So Weird

NTSC-TV.com is a reminder that analog color television was not one invention. It was a truce between physics, bandwidth, patents, broadcasters, regulators, and millions of black-and-white televisions that nobody wanted to make obsolete overnight.

The site presents itself as a set of color-television tutorials with more than 300 links across more than 90 subjects. Its table of contents covers scanning, timing and synchronization, gamma, resolution, bandwidth, color physics, encoding, decoding, digital video, VCR signals, and practical circuits.

Then it drops into history.

A major section reproduces a 1981 SMPTE historical paper by Donald G. Fink describing the forces behind the NTSC standards. The story is less “engineers discovered the correct answer” and more “an industry full of competing interests had to agree on something television stations and consumers could actually use.”

Compatibility won because installed hardware mattered

The first NTSC established American monochrome standards around 1941. By the time color arrived, the central problem was brutal: a new color system could not simply strand every existing black-and-white receiver.

CBS pushed an incompatible field-sequential color system. RCA and others pursued compatible approaches. The FCC briefly authorized the CBS system, but the public had little reason to embrace broadcasts their existing sets could not receive properly.

The second NTSC eventually approved the compatible color standard in 1953.

That solution is the source of much of analog television’s beautiful ugliness. Color information had to coexist with an older monochrome signal inside a six-megahertz channel while preserving reasonable reception on existing sets.

NTSC-TV.com does not simplify that into a cute diagram and stop. It walks through the compromises: scanning structure, subcarriers, luminance and chrominance, bandwidth, timing, color-difference signals, interference, and why PAL and SECAM later made different tradeoffs.

The site’s footer dates back to 1999, and the page design feels like the engineering Web of that period: dense text, tiny navigation, diagrams, technical references, and an assumption that the visitor is willing to sit down and learn how the thing actually works.

That assumption is refreshing.

Modern video hides astonishing complexity behind HDMI cables and software APIs. NTSC exposed much more of the machine. If the sync was wrong, the picture rolled. If the color phase was wrong, faces went green. If the bandwidth was limited, detail vanished. You could practically watch the engineering compromises misbehave in real time.

Ancient Web: AA5TB Has Been Publishing Ham Radio Notes Since 1998

AA5TB is what happens when a ham-radio notebook gets a domain name and then survives for nearly three decades.

The site belongs to Steve Yates of Fort Worth, Texas. He notes that the pages were first established in July 1998 and that he was first licensed as an amateur-radio operator in 1979.

That difference matters.

The website was not the beginning of the hobby. It was the point when decades of accumulated radio work started becoming searchable by everybody else.

The site covers antennas, small transmitting loops, end-fed half-wave antennas, dipoles, T-monopoles, QRP couplers, higher-power couplers, homemade baluns, coax for field use, and other practical topics that radio people can argue about indefinitely and then go outside to test anyway.

Personal technical pages age differently

A lot of technical websites become obsolete because they explain one software version, one product, or one API.

A page about the behavior of a piece of wire at radio frequency can last much longer.

AA5TB has that quality. Its subject matter is old physics being applied by actual people in garages, workshops, fields, portable stations, and back yards. Component choices change. Suppliers disappear. Radios improve. The wavelength is still the wavelength.

The site’s plain presentation also makes the underlying work easy to see. It is not trying to sell a lifestyle around amateur radio. It is mostly an accumulation of diagrams, formulas, measurements, designs, and explanations.

That was one of the strongest forms of the personal Web.

A person developed expertise, wrote down what worked, and linked the pages together. Search engines eventually made that private notebook discoverable to somebody on the other side of the world trying to solve the same problem.

Yates even quotes the FCC definition of amateur service on the homepage: radio communication for self-training, intercommunication, and technical investigations by authorized amateurs with a personal rather than commercial aim.

The website follows the same spirit.

It is a technical archive created because the material was worth sharing, not because every page needed a conversion funnel.

Ancient Web: Rulers.org Has Been Tracking Who Runs What Since 1996

Rulers.org looks like somebody decided the Web needed a permanent answer to the question, “Who was running that country in March 1974?” and then refused to stop updating the answer.

The site is a giant chronology of heads of state, heads of government, de facto leaders, foreign ministers, regional subdivisions, and international organizations. In many countries the lists go back to around 1700. Birth and death years appear where known, uncertain dates get special notation, and the site is careful about the difference between an exact term and a period during which somebody is merely known to have held office.

That already makes it useful.

Then you notice the monthly chronicle.

Rulers.org has event pages beginning in 1996 and continuing year by year, month by month, into 2026. Instead of a frozen historical reference, it became a running political log maintained in the same plain-Web style for decades.

Dense information, almost no decoration

The design philosophy is the opposite of modern publishing.

There are no giant hero images, no cards, no infinite scroll, and very little effort spent making the material look dramatic. The page exists to get names and dates onto the screen.

That makes it feel closer to a reference book with hyperlinks than a modern website.

The site’s notation also reveals how serious the underlying bookkeeping is. If the exact beginning or end of a ruler’s term is uncertain, an asterisk marks the known range instead of pretending the historical record is cleaner than it is. Female rulers are marked, birth and death years are noted, and the site warns that biographical dates can conflict between sources.

This is not glamorous work.

It is the kind of work that becomes more valuable precisely because nobody notices it while it is being done.

A political chronology assembled continuously over thirty years can preserve transitions, temporary governments, disputed offices, small territories, and short-lived appointments that are easy to flatten out in later summaries.

The monthly event pages are especially interesting because they preserve history before anyone knows which parts of it will matter later.

That is one of the recurring themes in the Ancient Web project. A specialist site does not need to predict the future. It only needs to keep good notes.

Ancient Web: Windows Refund Day Tried to Return the OS Nobody Asked For

On February 15, 1999, people showed up at Microsoft offices trying to return Windows.

The basic complaint was simple: many PC buyers wanted the hardware but not the operating system bundled with it. Microsoft’s license agreement said users could reject the agreement and seek a refund, while manufacturers routinely made the practical act of getting that refund difficult or impossible.

So open-source users turned the problem into an event.

Marc Merlin’s surviving Windows Refund Day page preserves the story from inside that moment. It describes February 15 as a worldwide day when users of Linux and other operating systems went to Microsoft offices to return licenses they said they had been forced to acquire with their computers.

The page still carries photos, contemporary explanation, and video material from television coverage.

The battle was partly about a sticker

The late-1990s PC market made operating-system bundling feel almost invisible.

Buy a mass-market machine and Windows was simply there. The price of the license disappeared into the price of the computer. For people installing Linux, BSD, or another operating system immediately, that meant paying for software they did not intend to use.

Refund Day tried to make the hidden transaction visible.

The organizers’ argument leaned heavily on the Windows End User License Agreement itself. If a buyer did not accept the license, the agreement appeared to contemplate returning the software. The problem was that the software was generally not a shrink-wrapped box sitting next to the machine. It was an OEM installation entangled with the hardware sale, manufacturer contracts, and a distribution system where nobody at the retail counter wanted to explain who owed whom twenty, fifty, or a hundred dollars.

The campaign therefore became both a consumer-rights protest and a snapshot of the Linux community at the end of the 1990s.

This was before Linux laptops were a normal product category, before major manufacturers routinely advertised machines without Windows, and before open-source software had become an ordinary part of corporate infrastructure.

The Refund Day page now reads like a small primary-source packet from that transition. It preserves the rhetoric, the frustration, the logistics, and the television-news footage instead of reducing the episode to one sentence in a history of Linux.

Ancient Web: The Living Image Camera Museum Keeps Old Cameras Working

The Living Image Camera Museum has a rule that immediately makes it better than a room full of dead glass boxes: the cameras should work.

The collection focuses on the ordinary cameras people actually used across the twentieth century. Not just Leica, Contax, and other expensive names that already have collectors fighting over them, but box cameras, folding cameras, modest 35mm machines, roll-film cameras, and battered survivors that somebody thought were worth rescuing.

The museum’s origin story is personal. Its creator describes receiving a 1954 Dacora from his mother, then a much older Butcher’s Cameo from his grandmother. The Cameo dated to around 1910 and had been second-hand even when she received it as a child. Rather than treating it as an untouchable relic, he got it taking photographs again.

That became the philosophy of the site.

A museum where the exhibits still have film in them

The site now documents roughly 180 vintage cameras, many with rotating views, repair notes, historical context, practical observations, and photographs made with the cameras themselves.

The organization is wonderfully old-Web and genuinely useful. You can browse by decade, by camera type, or through an index. The era rooms make the evolution of camera design visible: wood and brass give way to black paint and chrome; folding cameras shrink; 35mm takes over; plastics and automatic exposure arrive; Japanese manufacturing becomes dominant.

The workshop sections are even better because they show preservation as a process rather than an outcome.

Cameras are opened, cleaned, repaired, rebuilt, loaded, tested, and occasionally found to be more stubborn than expected. The site’s 2026 update log is still talking about test films, shutter mechanisms, dirty brakes, donated cameras, and machines returning to service after decades.

That continuity matters. The Living Image Camera Museum is not just an old website about old cameras. It is an old-style personal website that is still being actively used for the exact reason personal sites were valuable in the first place: one person knows a ridiculous amount about a subject and keeps writing it down.

The most affecting part of the introduction is not technical at all. The author describes placing one of his grandparents’ old negatives back into the camera that exposed it decades earlier and thinking about the light that had once passed through the lens from them.

That is preservation in one sentence.

Ancient Web: Mime.info Has Cataloged Silent Performance Since 1996

The funniest thing about mime.info is what it is not. It has nothing to do with e-mail attachments, MIME types, or browser headers. It is The World of Mime Theatre, and it has been standing quietly on the Web since 1996.

That date matters. A specialist site created in 1996 had to solve a problem that search engines, social networks, Wikipedia, YouTube, and modern event platforms would later attack from different directions: how do you make a scattered international art form findable?

Mime.info answered by building directories.

The site accumulated listings for performers, companies, schools, workshops, organizations, publications, films, videos, festivals, and related websites. It also built a library with an encyclopedia of mime, historical writing, biographies, and older texts. Some of the pages still carry copyright lines beginning in 1996, while others show updates stretching well into the 2020s.

That gives the site an unusual texture. It is not simply a dead 1990s homepage preserved in amber. It is an old information architecture that kept receiving new information.

A directory before everything became a platform

The old Web loved hand-built directories because there often was no better way to organize a niche.

If you wanted to find mime schools in another country, a physical-theatre company, a publication, a festival, or information about Marcel Marceau, there was no giant centralized service guaranteed to have it. Somebody had to gather the material and make the links.

Mime.info did exactly that.

The library alone includes an encyclopedia, historical material, books, articles, and resources tracing mime and pantomime across centuries. Other sections preserve contact information and names for companies and organizations that may otherwise have vanished from casual search.

Its creator, Lorin Eric Salm, describes The World of Mime Theatre as first created in 1996. In 2026 the project reached its thirtieth year online, which is a remarkable lifespan for a site built around one specialized performing art.

There is also something very old-Web about the way the project assumes human curation is a feature rather than a defect. Visitors are invited to submit missing schools, companies, books, and other resources. The site grows because somebody notices that a thing exists and tells the webmaster.

No recommendation algorithm is required.
