The page credits Molly Billings, June 1997, with a later modification in February 2005. The structure is pure academic web.

A historical lesson preserved with its own historical assumptions

The main page branches into sections on the epidemic’s impact, public-health responses, scientific and medical responses, treatment, etiology, and references.

It also links outward to letters, recollections, and period material that were once scattered across university servers.

Some of the numerical estimates and scientific framing reflect scholarship available when the page was written and should not automatically be treated as current medical consensus. The value here is partly that the site preserves what a university web lesson looked like in 1997 and 2005, not that every sentence should replace newer historical or epidemiological research.

That distinction is important with old educational pages.

A surviving site can be historically valuable twice: once for the subject it teaches, and again for the period in which the teaching page itself was created.

Ancient Web: Star Wars vs. Star Trek Put Engineering Math Into Fandom

Some fan arguments end with “because I like this one better.”

Michael Wong brought mechanical engineering to the fight.

The site opens as an Imperial military recruitment pitch before admitting what it really is: a long-running attempt to compare Star Wars and Star Trek military hardware as rigorously as the source material allows.

Wong says the site was born on August 1, 1998.

Treat the fictional evidence like evidence

The archive is organized around questions that Internet fandom still fights about today: what counts as canon, how evidence should be analyzed, what sources can be trusted, and how far a numerical estimate can reasonably be pushed.

Wong’s engineering background shapes the whole site.

Instead of stopping at screenshots and quotations, he works through weapon effects, ship capabilities, energy estimates, materials, tactics, and other technical questions. He also states the limitation clearly: these are back-of-the-envelope calculations based on fictional observations, not laboratory measurements.

That caveat matters.

A calculation showing one fictional weapon as 50 percent stronger than another may be too imprecise to mean much. A hundredfold difference is a different story. That is a surprisingly sensible epistemology for a website whose front page is trying to recruit you into the Galactic Empire.

The technical notes are equally useful as web history.

The original pages were written in Netscape Composer. Later editing happened in tools including OpenOffice, kwrite, vi, cooledit, and WordPad. Image work moved through scanners, DVD capture, and GIMP. Wong even notes that the site works, with varying success, in Internet Explorer, Mozilla, Konqueror, Opera, Mosaic, and Lynx.

That is an entire era of browser culture preserved in the maintenance notes of a fandom argument.

Ancient Web: Eclipse ’98 Survived a Million-Hit Live Webcast

Eclipse ’98 is what a live Internet event looked like when “scale” meant finding enough mirror servers before the crowd arrived.

The site was built for the total solar eclipse of February 26, 1998 in the Caribbean. Its volunteer E-team wanted to publish educational material before and after the event and deliver live eclipse images during totality.

The surviving “Lessons Learned” document is better than a polished retrospective because it records the actual engineering problems.

Seven hundred files and twelve servers

The team says the site contained more than 700 files from multiple authors. Twelve server sites supported Eclipse ’98 on eclipse day, and estimated traffic exceeded one million accesses. One mirror alone reportedly handled more than 220,000 hits.

The architecture sounds wonderfully transitional now: static HTML pages, CGI scripts, FTP image servers, mirror sites, distribution scripts, guestbooks, and a separate “post office.”

The webcast portion struggled under saturation. Servers that were supposed to distribute fresh images were also busy serving ordinary HTML. The team later concluded that dedicated image servers and better traffic prioritization would have helped.

Browser compatibility was another headache.

The pages were primarily built on Windows 95 using Netscape 4.x. Internet Explorer, Macintosh systems, Windows 3.1, screen sizes below 800×600, MIME mappings on older servers, and differences between browsers all created trouble.

The authors put it plainly: the web’s promise of standards and portability was still far from automatic.

The communication stack is just as period-specific. E-mail did most of the work, with ICQ, NetMeeting, and AOL Instant Messenger used when the team needed tighter coordination.

That makes Eclipse ’98 more than an astronomy site. It is a preserved postmortem from the era when a million-hit day could be fought with mirrors, FTP, volunteer labor, and a lot of improvisation.

Ancient Web: Stinkymeat2 Left Six Kinds of Meat to Rot in Public

The old web had no shortage of ambitious projects, but few began with a $12.03 grocery bill and a plan to leave meat outside until it became unbearable.

Stinkymeat2 is the sequel to an earlier rotting-meat experiment. On Day 1, the author and his “stinkymate” buy six subjects: sausage, canned oysters, salmon, a whole young chicken, canned dog food, and a fast-food burger.

The tone is half mock science report, half gross-out diary.

Then the project gets worse.

Bring stinkymeat to the public

On Day 2, the author decides that “true science” should not be hidden in somebody’s backyard. The meat gets split between public locations, including a park and a mall planter.

That turns the site into something more than pictures of decomposition.

Each day documents what changed, what disappeared, what smelled worse, how animals or people interfered, and how the author reacted to increasingly revolting conditions. The photographs are presented directly in the page flow with optional high-resolution versions, which was a perfectly reasonable way to build an Internet spectacle before video platforms swallowed this kind of stunt.

The project runs to Day 18.

By then most of the experiment has been disrupted or removed, and the remaining chicken has hardened on top while staying unpleasantly wet underneath. The cleanup report describes gloves, a filter mask, beetles, a biohazard bag, and the unmistakable realization that the smell has penetrated the mask anyway.

There is no polished documentary voice here. The pages work because the author keeps narrating the stupid practical details: grocery prices, security guards, public placement, missing meat, nausea, and the moment a decomposing chicken makes a Velcro-like sound when lifted from the ground.

That specificity is why it survives as Internet history instead of just a joke.

Ancient Web: Smuggled.com Turned a 1996 Domain Into a Giant Personal Server Maze

Smuggled.com is the sort of website that makes more sense if you stop thinking of it as a publication and start thinking of it as one person’s server with the directory doors left open.

The site says it was established in 1996. Over the years Raymond Hoser used the domain for an enormous mixture of reptile and herpetology material, books, photographs, papers, media releases, indexes, and political or legal commentary.

Those subjects do not resolve into one neat modern niche.

That is the point.

One domain, a lot of drawers

The full-site listings expose the architecture particularly well. Individual HTML files, photo sections, species material, conference images, articles, book pages, and long chains of related documents sit beside one another like folders in a filing cabinet.

The herpetology material alone gives the site historical value as a record of specialist publishing on the personal web. It includes reptile photographs, species pages, conference material, and papers accumulated over years rather than presented through a single modern database interface.

Other parts of the domain are more contentious.

Smuggled.com presents allegations about censorship, corruption, government actions, legal disputes, and attempts to suppress material on the site. Those are the site’s own first-person claims and should not be mistaken for independently established facts simply because they remain online. This Ancient Web article is documenting the domain as a web artifact, not validating those allegations.

That distinction actually makes the site more interesting to study.

The early web made it possible for one person to publish material that previously would have required a newspaper, specialist journal, photocopier, mailing list, or sympathetic publisher. The result could be valuable research, eccentric autobiography, advocacy, argument, or all four on adjacent pages.

Smuggled.com preserves that pre-platform publishing model at unusual scale.

There is no clean separation between author, archive, newsroom, library, photo album, and grievance file. The domain is the container. If the owner thought something belonged there, it went there.

Ancient Web: HyperPhysics Turned HyperCard Into a 1998 Web of Physics Concepts

HyperPhysics feels less like a textbook website than somebody cut a physics course into index cards and connected every useful edge with string.

Created by Rod Nave at Georgia State University, the project grew out of HyperCard teaching material and was substantially converted to HTML by late 1998. The resulting site kept the card-sized approach: compact explanations connected through dense concept maps rather than long chapters.

The subjects range across mechanics, electricity and magnetism, sound and hearing, optics and vision, heat, matter, nuclear physics, relativity, quantum physics, astronomy, and related mathematics.

It is enormous without looking enormous.

Hypertext used as an actual teaching idea

The key design choice is the linking.

A student reading about a lens can branch toward refraction, the eye, focal length, optical instruments, or a calculation. A mechanics topic can lead into energy, momentum, rotation, or gravity. Javascript calculators and diagrams sit close to the explanations instead of living in a separate application.

That makes HyperPhysics a particularly literal implementation of hypertext.

The web is not just delivering pages. The connections between concepts are part of the lesson.

Nave’s retrospective material says the project had been hosted from his office beginning in 1998 before eventually moving onto Georgia State infrastructure in 2016. He also described traffic on the order of millions of document hits per day during one measured period, evidence that a hand-built educational resource could become serious reference infrastructure without turning into a commercial platform.

Another old-web virtue is stability. HyperPhysics built up thousands of incoming links because its paths stayed useful. Teachers could reference a specific concept rather than send students to a constantly rearranging homepage.

The visual design is unmistakably old, but that is almost beside the point. The site works because its information architecture matches the subject: physics is a network of relationships, so the pages are a network of relationships.

Ancient Web: SPACEFACTS Built a Human Spaceflight Database by Hand

SPACEFACTS has the unmistakable feel of a database that existed because two people kept caring about the rows.

Joachim Becker and Heinz Janssen built the larger site around biographies, portraits, mission reports, statistical tables, EVA data, and human-spaceflight records covering astronauts, cosmonauts, taikonauts, and candidates from around the world.

The linked ISS-position page is only one small doorway into that larger collection.

A hobby database became a reference source

Becker traces his interest in human spaceflight back to Apollo 8’s lunar orbit in 1968. He later began building a computer-assisted database of biographical and statistical material on space travelers.

Janssen’s interest developed separately and eventually joined the same project.

The site’s structure reflects that database mentality.

People are not presented only as famous names. They are connected to missions, agencies, flight assignments, portraits, launch and landing events, EVA records, and statistical tables.

The old guestbook is revealing too. Visitors from the early 2000s sent corrections, family information, missing biographical details, and praise for the site’s coverage. One retired scientist who had trained U.S. astronauts offered additional material. Other visitors pointed out errors in names and dates.

That feedback loop is how hand-maintained reference sites become unexpectedly durable.

The site’s update history shows years of incremental maintenance through Soyuz, Shuttle, Crew Dragon, Shenzhou, and newer astronaut selections. The visual design changed far less than the underlying records.

That is almost the inverse of the modern web, where interfaces are frequently rebuilt while old information quietly disappears.

Ancient Web: Douglas Self Collected Vehicles With Not Enough Wheels

The history of transportation contains a surprising number of inventors who looked at a normal vehicle and decided the main problem was that it had too many wheels.

Douglas Self’s Museum of Retro Technology documents those decisions with the same mixture of engineering curiosity and dry commentary that runs through the rest of his site.

The result is a gallery of machines that tried to balance, steer, stabilize, or simply survive with fewer contact points than common sense might recommend.

Engineering by subtraction

The collection branches into monowheels and related machines where the rider may sit inside or around a giant wheel, as well as stranger arrangements that blur the line between bicycle, car, gyro vehicle, and mechanical dare.

Some concepts were serious engineering projects. Others look as though their inventors reached the prototype stage before asking the obvious question.

What happens when you brake?

That is the fun of Self’s museum.

It does not treat failed or eccentric technology as useless. A bad transport idea can still reveal what engineers were trying to solve: weight, stability, traction, steering, compactness, mechanical simplicity, or the dream of doing with one wheel what everybody else required four to accomplish.

The pages also preserve the visual evidence that makes these designs understandable. Patent-style drawings, old photographs, captions, dates, and short technical notes let the visitor compare solutions across eras.

Self’s larger Museum of Retro Technology is full of similar branches where engineering wandered somewhere interesting even when industry eventually chose another path.

That is a particularly good fit for the web.

A printed encyclopedia has to justify the space spent on an unsuccessful one-wheel automobile. A personal website can give it an entire page because the author thinks it is fascinating.

Ancient Web: Texas Water Towers Made Roadside Infrastructure Worth Stopping For

A water tower is one of those things most people notice only when it has the town’s name painted on it and they need to know where the hell they are.

The site is a photographic archive of towers around Texas, organized town by town and mixed with short bits of local geography and history. Pages for places such as Galveston, Round Rock, Hutto, Temple, Manor, and Sealy pair photographs with just enough context to turn the tower into part of the town rather than an isolated object.

Infrastructure becomes a travel collection

The Temple page is a good example of what makes the archive useful.

It does not just show finished towers. One set of photographs documents a new tower while it was still under construction in April 2007, with workers visible inside the tank before the top had been installed.

Elsewhere the site wanders into related collections: Texas wall art, postcards, toys, dolls, books, records, a 1928 Model A, and a 1964 Corvette.

That drift is pure personal web.

A modern niche site would probably insist on staying “on brand.” A personal homepage can begin with water towers and then quietly admit that the people behind it also collect postcards and children’s books.

The photographs are credited to Kay, and the pages preserve a road-trip rhythm: town name, county, a location note, a little history, then the structure itself.

There is no attempt to make municipal water infrastructure glamorous.

That is what makes it good.

A tower that thousands of drivers pass without thinking can become historically useful once someone photographs it before repainting, replacement, demolition, or redevelopment changes the scene.

Ancient Web: CanonLaw.info Built a Research Center Out of Static Web Pages

CanonLaw.info looks like what happens when somebody decides a website should behave less like a publication and more like a filing cabinet with several centuries inside it.

Edward N. Peters’ site is a research center for Catholic canon law. The front page alone points into the 1917 Code, the 1983 Code, Eastern canon law, the Corpus Iuris Canonici, ancient collections, legislative history, commentaries, Latin texts, topical studies, abbreviations, and research tools.

It is dense because the subject is dense.

The web as a legal apparatus

One of the useful things about the site is that it does not pretend canon law can be reduced to a handful of FAQ answers.

Peters presents it as a functioning legal system with historical layers.

The 1917 Pio-Benedictine Code replaced older collections and remained in force until the 1983 Code. The site links original Latin texts, current texts, commentaries, historical materials, and tools for tracking changes.

It also gives the Eastern Catholic code its own path and reaches further backward into collections such as the Decretals of Gregory IX and Gratian’s Concordia.

This kind of organization is where static HTML can be unexpectedly effective.

A researcher does not necessarily need a beautiful interface. They need stable labels, predictable paths, lots of cross-links, and enough explanation to understand which document belongs to which legal period.

The page is unapologetically scholarly and personal at the same time. Peters identifies himself directly, includes his own research interests and notes, links side projects, and states where material represents his views rather than official legal advice.

That mixture used to be common on expert-run websites.

The specialist was visible behind the index.
