Ancient Web: The Delta Launch Vehicle Site Tracked a Rocket Family for Decades

Kevin S. Forsyth’s Delta rocket site has the feel of somebody who started keeping notes because the official story was too scattered and then accidentally built one of the better surviving specialist archives on the subject.

The site traces Delta back through Thor missile hardware and the earliest American launch-vehicle programs. It follows the family through lettered variants, numbered designations, solid boosters, upper stages, payload fairings, communications satellites, GPS launches, scientific missions, and the long operational life of Delta II.

The site has been online long enough that its own counters reference visits beginning December 4, 1997.

That makes the archive part of two histories at once: the history of the rocket and the history of enthusiasts using the Web to document technical subjects in public.

The flight log is the center of gravity

The most useful section is the flight log.

It lists launches beginning with the failed Echo 1 attempt on May 13, 1960, followed by the successful Echo 1A flight three months later. Entries include dates, flight numbers, spacecraft, vehicle versions, managing organizations, launch sites, payload weights, outcomes, and orbital information.

Other pages explain vehicle designations, performance specifications, historical sources, and the sometimes confusing relationships between Delta variants.

Forsyth also kept news entries while the vehicles were still flying. A 1998 item covers the Delta 7326 launch of Deep Space 1. A 2002 update documents a five-satellite Iridium replacement launch after multiple weather and equipment delays. Those pages now read less like news and more like field notes from the operational life of the program.

The site’s final schedule page eventually reached an unusual endpoint for a launch calendar: there were no more original Delta launches to schedule.

The era had ended.

One remaining vehicle was noted as being placed in the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex rocket garden.

The archive also makes editorial choices instead of pretending to cover everything. Forsyth explains why Delta IV is not treated as part of the main historical sequence despite sharing the name and some program heritage. That kind of boundary-setting is useful because technical history gets muddy when branding, corporate lineage, and hardware lineage are treated as the same thing.

Ancient Web: SPACEFACTS Built a Human Spaceflight Database by Hand

SPACEFACTS has the unmistakable feel of a database that existed because two people kept caring about the rows.

Joachim Becker and Heinz Janssen built the larger site around biographies, portraits, mission reports, statistical tables, EVA data, and human-spaceflight records covering astronauts, cosmonauts, taikonauts, and candidates from around the world.

The linked ISS-position page is only one small doorway into that larger collection.

A hobby database became a reference source

Becker traces his interest in human spaceflight back to Apollo 8’s lunar orbit in 1968. He later began building a computer-assisted database of biographical and statistical material on space travelers.

Janssen’s interest developed separately and eventually joined the same project.

The site’s structure reflects that database mentality.

People are not presented only as famous names. They are connected to missions, agencies, flight assignments, portraits, launch and landing events, EVA records, and statistical tables.

The old guestbook is revealing too. Visitors from the early 2000s sent corrections, family information, missing biographical details, and praise for the site’s coverage. One retired scientist who had trained U.S. astronauts offered additional material. Other visitors pointed out errors in names and dates.

That feedback loop is how hand-maintained reference sites become unexpectedly durable.

The site’s update history shows years of incremental maintenance through Soyuz, Shuttle, Crew Dragon, Shenzhou, and newer astronaut selections. The visual design changed far less than the underlying records.

That is almost the inverse of the modern web, where interfaces are frequently rebuilt while old information quietly disappears.

SPACEFACTS kept the database moving.
