Ancient Web: Orville the Mouse Became the Internet’s First Electronaut

On January 8, 2003, a mouse named Orville took two short flights aboard a homemade high-voltage lifter and was promptly awarded one of the better job titles in Internet history: electronaut.

Meet Orville the Electronaut

The page belongs to Jean-Louis Naudin’s sprawling collection of experiments with so-called lifters: lightweight asymmetric-capacitor devices that can produce thrust in air using high voltage and ion movement. The mechanism is generally discussed in terms of electrohydrodynamic or ionic-wind effects, although old pages around the subject often used much more ambitious language such as “electrokinetic” or even “antigravity.”

Orville’s page is memorable because Naudin did not stop at lifting bits of foil and balsa wood. The Maximus lifter was built large enough to carry a mouse as payload. Contemporary copies and references to the experiment describe Orville completing two tethered flights and returning in good health. The power source remained external; this was not a tiny self-contained spaceship. It was, however, a mouse in a handmade flying high-voltage contraption, which is already enough Internet for one day.

The experiment became widely linked. Physics-education writing later referenced Orville when discussing ion-powered flight, and old forum threads kept passing the page around years after the original test. The reason is obvious: a technical phenomenon that might otherwise remain an abstract diagram suddenly has a pilot.

The page is also a perfect artifact of its era. Early experimental Web culture was full of people publishing photographs, test notes, schematics and increasingly strange demonstrations directly from personal pages. There was no need to package the work into a video channel, build a personal brand or wait for a platform to decide whether the subject had engagement potential.

There is a useful skepticism lesson here too. The lifter visibly produces thrust, but that does not establish exotic propulsion or gravity control. The interesting part is the documented home experiment, not the grandest interpretation anybody attached to it afterward.

Ancient Web: SubSITE Is Still a Labyrinth of SubGenius Internet Culture

SubSITE is what happens when a counterculture organization gets a website early and then treats deleting old material as a moral failure.

The site is the official Web home of the Church of the SubGenius, the satirical religion and culture built around the pipe-smoking face of J.R. “Bob” Dobbs and the deliberately slippery concept of Slack.

The organization predates the public Web by years. Its own pages describe the Church as public since 1980, and the website carries forward material from pamphlets, newsletters, recordings, mail-order culture, events, radio, and earlier online communities.

But the important thing here is not trying to summarize SubGenius doctrine. The important thing is the pile.

SubSITE openly links to its own obsolete layers.

There are ancient pages, old newsletters, MIT SubGenius digest archives, graphics collections, audio, fonts, video, and a Software Funhouse containing antique games, applications, and animations from the 1990s. Older index pages survive beside newer ones instead of being flattened into one redesign.

The result is archaeological by accident and by attitude.

The website keeps its previous selves

Most long-running websites replace themselves repeatedly.

Navigation changes. Old downloads disappear. Images are migrated or compressed. A redesign converts hundreds of weird pages into six clean marketing categories, and the historical structure vanishes even when the text technically survives.

SubSITE does nearly the opposite.

Its current front page points visitors toward “old links” and describes some pages as ancient, dusty, or shunned. An updates section calls its older update pages a kind of geological history of the website and encourages visitors to explore dead links and hidden material.

That is not elegant information architecture.

It is fantastic preservation behavior.

The site also preserves software artifacts that would otherwise be easy to lose: old Mac and Windows programs, fonts filled with SubGenius symbols, short videos in obsolete formats, sound material, and graphics designed for an Internet where downloading a strange file from a weird organization was part of the entertainment.

The tone never separates archive from performance. Even order forms, warnings, copyright notices, and navigation instructions stay in character. That makes it difficult to draw a clean line between the material and the container around it—which is precisely why a plain text archive would lose something important.

Ancient Web: Stinkymeat2 Left Six Kinds of Meat to Rot in Public

The old web had no shortage of ambitious projects, but few began with a $12.03 grocery bill and a plan to leave meat outside until it became unbearable.

Stinkymeat2 is the sequel to an earlier rotting-meat experiment. On Day 1, the author and his “stinkymate” buy six subjects: sausage, canned oysters, salmon, a whole young chicken, canned dog food, and a fast-food burger.

The tone is half mock science report, half gross-out diary.

Then the project gets worse.

Bring stinkymeat to the public

On Day 2, the author decides that “true science” should not be hidden in somebody’s backyard. The meat gets split between public locations, including a park and a mall planter.

That turns the site into something more than pictures of decomposition.

Each day documents what changed, what disappeared, what smelled worse, how animals or people interfered, and how the author reacted to increasingly revolting conditions. The photographs are presented directly in the page flow with optional high-resolution versions, which was a perfectly reasonable way to build an Internet spectacle before video platforms swallowed this kind of stunt.

The project runs to Day 18.

By then most of the experiment has been disrupted or removed, and the remaining chicken has hardened on top while staying unpleasantly wet underneath. The cleanup report describes gloves, a filter mask, beetles, a biohazard bag, and the unmistakable realization that the smell has penetrated the mask anyway.

There is no polished documentary voice here. The pages work because the author keeps narrating the stupid practical details: grocery prices, security guards, public placement, missing meat, nausea, and the moment a decomposing chicken makes a Velcro-like sound when lifted from the ground.

That specificity is why it survives as Internet history instead of just a joke.

Ancient Web: Britney Spears’ Guide to Semiconductor Physics Is Real

Yes, the website is really called Britney Spears’ Guide to Semiconductor Physics. No, Britney Spears did not secretly abandon pop music to explain quantum wells. The actual story is better Internet.

The site was written and designed by Carl Hepburn while he was a postgraduate student at the University of Essex. Hepburn explains that he started the pages while studying for his dissertation because he wanted to consolidate what he was learning about semiconductor physics while also learning HTML.

Then he added Britney Spears so people would remember the website.

It worked.

Under the joke is an actual physics tutorial

The navigation covers semiconductor basics, crystal structures, junctions, finite-barrier quantum wells, radiative recombination, carrier transport, density of states, edge-emitting lasers, vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers, photonic crystals, fabrication and photolithography. There is even a semiconductor-term “lip-glossary.”

The tone may be absurd, but the subject matter is not random filler. Hepburn had a theoretical-physics degree and an experimental-physics master’s degree and was working on a PhD involving GaInNAs vertical-cavity semiconductor optical amplifiers. His master’s dissertation on the temperature dependence of long-wavelength VCSELs was linked from the site.

This is an excellent old-Web trick: hide serious information inside something weird enough that people voluntarily tell their friends about it.

SEO before everybody called it SEO

Modern marketing departments spend enormous amounts of time trying to manufacture memorable hooks. A physics student put a global pop star next to semiconductor equations and accidentally solved the problem twenty years ago.

For webmasters, the lesson is not “put celebrities on everything.” The lesson is that useful information benefits from a recognizable frame. The strange part got people through the door; the real technical content gave the page a reason to survive after the joke should have expired.

It belongs comfortably among the eccentric resources in CacheRat’s 1,967 Ancient Web Domains research list. A large part of old-Web archaeology is discovering that the ridiculous-looking page sometimes contains the serious reference.

The semiconductor guide remains online, still explaining VCSELs under a banner nobody could confuse with a university textbook.
