A book about mechanical calculators becomes far more dangerous to your free time when somebody puts it online and starts adding pictures.

The core of Rechenmaschinen-Illustrated is Ernst Martin’s The Calculating Machines, a major historical reference on mechanical calculation. The site presents an online version and extends it with illustrations, articles and additional information.

That extension matters because many machines described in old technical literature are difficult to understand from names and prose alone.

Mechanical calculators are physical mechanisms. Cranks, pinwheels, registers, stepped drums, carry systems and carriage movements make much more sense when the reader can see the hardware being discussed.

Ancient Web: The Intel 4004 Site Argues the History From the Inside

The Intel 4004 has been called the first commercial microprocessor so often that the sentence can become wallpaper. Intel4004.com is more interesting because it gets into the messy part: who conceived it, who actually built it, and which manufacturing breakthroughs made the chip possible.

The site is built around Federico Faggin’s account of the project. Faggin joined Intel from Fairchild in April 1970 and led the implementation of the MCS-4 chip set for Busicom. His pages separate the earlier architectural proposal by Ted Hoff and Stan Mazor from the later design and development work that turned the idea into working silicon.

That distinction is the point of the site. It is not a neutral museum label. It is a technical participant arguing the historical record.

The manufacturing story matters

A large part of the material deals with silicon-gate technology, self-aligned gates, buried contacts, chip layout, and the practical problem of putting roughly 2,300 transistors into one commercially manufacturable processor in 1971.

That makes the site unusually useful. Plenty of histories say the 4004 “changed computing.” Fewer explain why the available MOS process technology was such a constraint or why Faggin’s background at Fairchild mattered to getting the design onto a chip.

The archive also includes papers, patent references, interviews, photographs, and detailed responses to accounts that Faggin believes overstate the role of others. Even if a researcher ultimately consults multiple histories, this is exactly the kind of primary-source perspective worth preserving.

Ancient Web: Multiplayer SimCity on X11

There was a multiplayer version of SimCity for X11 in the early 1990s. It ran on Unix workstations, could put several people into the same city over a network, and its surviving web page still has the product announcement to prove it.

The page is maintained by Don Hopkins, who worked on Unix and multiplayer versions of SimCity. What survived is not a retrospective assembled thirty years later. It is a pile of primary material: screenshots, manuals, reviews, conference material, demo transcripts, interface discussions and the original announcement for Multi Player SimCity on X11.

That announcement is dated 1993 and reads like software distribution from another planet. A fully functional demo could be copied and played without a license, but there was a catch: the city melted every five minutes.

That is copy protection with personality.

SimCity escaped the beige box

The archive has screenshots of SimCity running on SGI Indigo hardware, Sun systems and NCD X terminals. There are transcripts from demos of both X11 SimCity and a HyperLook edition for the NeWS window system.

There is also a proposal for SimCityNet and material on user-interface design, including a summary of a Will Wright talk about interfaces for simulation games.

One line deserves to survive on its own: multiplayer SimCity went on tour with the Electric Carnival at Lollapalooza.

Today, networked games are ordinary enough that nobody thinks twice about the plumbing. These pages come from a period when putting a familiar simulation across networked Unix workstations was itself interesting enough to demonstrate at conferences and music festivals.

Why the page matters now

For game developers, this is source material. It shows not only what existed, but how it was described to users and other developers at the time. Product announcements list licensing models. Screenshots show actual interfaces. Transcripts preserve the way the software was demonstrated before streaming video became the default historical record.

For webmasters, the page is another good example of why boring HTML ages well. It is mostly a list of links with useful labels. Thirty years later, that is enough to reconstruct a little piece of game-development history.

Ancient Web: The Old Calculator Museum

Some websites look old because somebody installed a retro theme. The Old Calculator Web Museum looks old because Rick Bensene has been building the thing since 1997 and never needed to turn it into something else.

This is a museum of actual electronic and electromechanical calculators, not calculator apps and not a gallery of product shots scraped from somewhere else. Bensene maintains working machines, documentation, advertisements, manuals and a few early computers at a private museum in Oregon. Whenever practical, the hardware shown on the site is kept operational.

That alone would make the collection useful. The website makes it better.

Written the old way

The museum is built in basic HTML. Bensene says he writes the pages himself using vi.

No advertising network. No giant publishing framework. No page assembled by a small industrial accident of JavaScript after you arrive.

He also makes a point of saying that none of the site’s content is AI-generated. On a website that began in 1997, that statement feels less like a trend and more like continuity.

The exhibits cover machines from companies including Wang, Canon, Casio, Commodore, Friden and MITS. Specifications sit next to photographs, historical notes, scans and links into increasingly specific corners of calculator history.

MITS is a good example of why this material matters. Before the company became famous for the Altair 8800, it sold electronic calculator kits. That little connection between calculators and the early personal-computer industry is easy to flatten into a sentence in a timeline. Here it gets room to breathe.

More than hardware

The museum also preserves material that tends to disappear even when the machines survive: advertisements, manuals, technical documents and recollections from people who worked in the electronic-calculator industry during the 1960s and 1970s.

Hardware can survive on a shelf. The stories behind it usually need somebody to keep copying them forward.

For webmasters, the site is also a reminder that useful pages do not expire because their markup is unfashionable. A clear hierarchy, stable links and specific information can remain useful for decades.
