MrBreakfast.com took one meal and treated it like an academic discipline with syrup on it.

The site says it has been serving breakfast since 2002. Today it contains more than 2,800 breakfast recipes, articles, product reviews, research pages, holiday material, international breakfast reports, and a huge cereal-history section.

The idea sounds like a joke until you start clicking.

There are separate indexes for pancakes, waffles, French toast, omelets, scrambles, baked goods, homemade cereals, regional breakfasts, experimental recipes, breakfast drinks, and dozens of other subdivisions.

Then there is the Cereal Project.

Somebody had to remember Gremlins Cereal

The Cereal Project officially launched in 2009 as an ongoing database of U.S. breakfast cereals. The current site lists more than 1,700 cereals, arranged by company, timeline, family, popularity, and other categories.

That turns cereal into something more interesting than a product list.

Packaging art, mascots, tie-ins, discontinued brands, promotions, and forgotten licensed cereals become a record of advertising and pop culture. A cereal connected to E.T. or Gremlins is also a tiny timestamp for what companies thought children would recognize in a particular year.

MrBreakfast also preserves an older kind of subject-site ambition. The navigation is large because the subject became large. There is no attempt to pretend every visitor wants the same path through it.

You can arrive looking for a pancake recipe and end up reading about cereal prizes from thirty years ago.

The site’s own press history shows it was already getting media attention in 2003, when Yahoo and television stations were selecting it as a notable web resource. That is a useful reminder that subject-specialist websites could become genuine reference destinations without needing to become giant media companies.

Ancient Web: MythNET Is a 1997 Student Project That Became a Greek Mythology Reference

One of the nice things about the early web is that a school project could accidentally become permanent reference material.

MythNET is a Greek mythology section inside Classics Unveiled, built around pages on the Olympian gods, heroes, myths, genealogy, and related classical material.

The site’s own purpose page explains that it began as an entry for York Mills Collegiate Institute in the 1997 Ontario Students Classics Conference.

It won first place in the conference’s technological category.

Then it stayed online.

A class project with a twenty-nine-year tail

The main page directs readers toward the Twelve Olympian Gods, major heroes including Hercules, Theseus, Perseus, and Atalanta, and family-tree style genealogical charts showing relationships among mythological figures.

That structure reflects a pre-Wikipedia style of educational website.

Instead of one enormous article, subjects are split into compact pages connected by navigation. A student can follow the family tree, jump to a god, read a hero summary, then move outward into Roman history, Roman life, or Latin vocabulary elsewhere in Classics Unveiled.

The important historical detail is not that every sentence is now the best possible scholarly source. It is that the project demonstrates what happened when schools first discovered the web as a publishing medium.

A project that once might have been a poster board, binder, or presentation became publicly searchable and internationally reachable.

That changed the lifespan of student work.

The site also preserves the visual and organizational habits of the late-1990s educational web: image-heavy navigation, compact sections, hand-built indexes, and a clear sense that simply publishing structured information online was itself part of the experiment.

Ancient Web: The Super Toy Archive Has Been Cataloging Weird Action Figures Since 1997

The Super Toy Archive is what happens when a collector decides that “rare and unique toys of the 70s, 80s, and 90s” is a perfectly reasonable scope for one website.

Alex Bickmore’s homepage says the site opened on December 28, 1997. It was built to show pictures and information about rare toys, complete toy lines, unproduced pieces, unidentified parts, and oddities that collectors might otherwise have trouble naming.

The category list is glorious.

Thundercats. Battle Beasts. Rock Lords. GoBots. Diaclone. Dungeons & Dragons. She-Ra. Rambo. Silverhawks. Zoids. Robotech. Dino Riders. Filmation’s Ghostbusters. Monster in My Pocket. Toys that got a cartoon, toys that barely got a shelf, and toys somebody remembers because they found one leg of one figure in a box twenty years later.

Identification was a community job

The archive asks collectors to submit photographs from their own collections so gaps can be filled and obscure items documented.

That model is older than social platforms but very familiar in spirit: one person builds the structure, dozens of other obsessives supply missing evidence, and the site gradually becomes more useful than any single collection could be.

Two sections say a lot about the mission: “Unknown Toys” and “Unknown Parts.”

Those pages acknowledge the real archaeological problem of toy collecting. Sometimes you do not know what you have. A strange plastic accessory or incomplete figure has survived, but the packaging, instructions, and context vanished years ago.

A collector archive can reconnect the object to its name.

The homepage also still carries old WebRing furniture. There are previous, next, random, and index links for collectible-toy rings and action-figure rings, plus the classic plea to vote for the site and help it get recognized.

That is not decorative nostalgia added later. It is surviving infrastructure from the way hobby websites found each other before algorithmic feeds.

Ancient Web: Pilish Turns the Digits of Pi Into English Prose

Some people memorize pi with a song. Others apparently decide English itself should be forced to carry the digits.

Pilish is a constrained form of writing where the length of each word encodes the successive digits of pi.

The classic example begins with words of lengths 3, 1, 4, 1, 5, 9 and so on. That works until the decimal expansion produces a zero, because ordinary prose does not contain zero-letter words.

The page’s solution is wonderfully practical: let a ten-letter word represent zero.

Writing inside a numerical cage

The site distinguishes Basic Pilish from Standard Pilish.

In Basic Pilish, words shorter than ten letters represent their literal length and ten-letter words represent zero. Standard Pilish adds a rule allowing words longer than ten letters to encode two consecutive digits. A twelve-letter word, for example, can represent 1,2.

That sounds like a tiny technical adjustment, but it gives writers much more freedom.

The page also defines how apostrophes, hyphens, punctuation, and numbers should be treated so that a text can be decoded consistently. In other words, Pilish is not merely a party trick. Somebody cared enough to write a specification.

The result is a peculiar hybrid of mathematics, mnemonics, and constrained literature.

A normal writer asks which word best fits the sentence. A Pilish writer also has to ask whether that word has exactly the right number of letters for the next digit.

That changes composition at a very low level. Syntax, vocabulary, punctuation, and even subject choice bend around the constant.

The site points to longer works built under these rules, including Cadaeic Cadenza and Not A Wake, where the constraint becomes nearly invisible unless the reader starts counting.

Ancient Web: DOS4Ever Is an Electronics Bench That Happens to Be a Website

DOS4Ever feels less like a website than somebody left the door to an electronics workshop open and labeled every bench.

Ronald Dekker explains the purpose plainly: he enjoys visiting other people’s electronic project sites, so he made one of his own. The pages show what he has built and double as documentation for himself.

That second purpose explains why the site is so useful.

The projects are not polished showcase photos with a shopping list underneath. They include circuit descriptions, software, design reasoning, measurements, historical notes, and enough detail that another electronics hobbyist can understand what happened.

Nixies, PICs, tubes, and old processors everywhere

The index sprawls across Nixie clocks, a talking alarm clock, Numitron and Dekatron projects, analog meter clocks, tube curve tracers, a tiny oscilloscope built around an eight-pin PIC, a one-chip Pong implementation, 8051-family hardware, and an SC/MP computer running NIBL Tiny BASIC.

There is also the µTracer series, a miniature vacuum-tube curve tracer that uses pulsed measurements and small high-voltage converters instead of the heavy power supplies associated with traditional test equipment.

Then the site wanders into electronics history.

Dekker documents obscure Philips tubes, early television research, the EF50 valve’s wartime history, postwar Dutch electronics hobby culture, restoration of old radios, and even experiments involving artificial ball lightning.

This is exactly the sort of technical personal site search engines are bad at summarizing because its value is cumulative. No single article explains DOS4Ever. The useful object is the pile: years of projects, failed assumptions, measurements, diagrams, historical digging, and software all cross-linked from one person’s index.

The homepage even tells visitors they may copy, distribute, or sell the project material as far as the author is concerned, while making the predictable warning that he is not responsible if anybody electrocutes themselves or otherwise creates a disaster.

Ancient Web: JProc Preserves the Strange History of TEMPEST

Computers can leak secrets without sending a packet.

The page collects material about compromising emanations: unintended electromagnetic or acoustic signals from information-processing equipment that can reveal what the machine is doing.

The history is wonderfully strange.

A declassified NSA account traces the problem back to World War II, when Bell Telephone engineers discovered that encrypted teletype equipment was radiating patterns correlated with the plaintext being processed. In a demonstration across the street from a Signal Corps crypto center, engineers were reportedly able to reconstruct much of the message from the leaked signal.

The machine was secure. The room was talking.

That is the conceptual punch of TEMPEST.

A cryptographic system can be mathematically strong while the hardware implementing it leaks information through a completely different channel.

The page follows the subject through Cold War countermeasures, intelligence collection, shielding standards, and later public research into display emissions. It also points to Wim van Eck’s 1985 work showing that information from computer monitors could be reconstructed with comparatively inexpensive equipment.

The site is not itself a modern security standard or operational guide. Its value is historical: it connects wartime teletype equipment, classified shielding programs, declassified NSA material, Cold War espionage, and the eventual public understanding that electronic devices radiate more than engineers intend.

That history matters because side-channel attacks are now a normal security concept. Timing, power use, sound, electromagnetic emissions, and other physical behavior can all betray information even when the cryptography is sound.

Old pages like this preserve how surprising that idea once seemed.

Ancient Web: McSpotlight Put an Entire Corporate Court Fight Online in 1996

McSpotlight is what happens when a mid-1990s activist network looks at a multinational corporation, a giant libel trial, and the new World Wide Web and decides to upload everything.

The site launched on February 16, 1996. Its own launch history says volunteers spent roughly three months scanning documents and coordinating internationally before the pages went live in London, Chicago, Helsinki, and Auckland.

According to McSpotlight’s FAQ, the first version already contained about 1,300 files. By the end of the trial, the site says it had grown to roughly 21,000 files.

That scale matters.

This was not a campaign homepage

The McLibel case involved McDonald’s, Helen Steel, and Dave Morris, two London activists who defended themselves against the company’s libel action.

McSpotlight turned the dispute into a public document archive: witness statements, scientific reports, court material, media coverage, campaign arguments, interviews, audio, video, and background information about the company and the issues being argued in court.

The site’s presentation is openly activist rather than neutral, and it should be read that way. But the archive is valuable precisely because it preserves the campaign’s evidence, language, tactics, and contemporary framing instead of reducing the case to a paragraph written decades later.

Its surviving McLibel page also records later legal outcomes. The original English case produced findings that went both ways: the defendants failed to prove some allegations and were found to have libelled McDonald’s, while the judge also made findings critical of company practices. Steel and Morris later took the British government to the European Court of Human Rights, which ruled that their rights to a fair trial and freedom of expression had been violated.

The more interesting web-history point is the mechanism.

In 1996, a political campaign could suddenly bypass newspaper space limits and put thousands of source documents in front of anyone with a modem.

Ancient Web: Orbital Viewer Rendered Quantum Mechanics on Windows 3.1

There was a period when “visualize a quantum orbital” meant downloading a 600 KB Windows program from somebody’s personal website.

David Manthey’s Orbital Viewer first appeared in 1998 and was still being updated in 2004. The download page supports a wonderfully specific range of systems: Windows 95, 98, NT 4.0, 2000, ME, XP, and even Windows 3.1x with Win32s.

The program does much more than draw the familiar dumbbell-shaped p orbital.

Chemistry rendered like graphics software

Orbital Viewer can draw atomic orbitals with principal quantum number up to 30 and build molecular orbitals using linear combinations of atomic orbitals.

Rendering options include probability-point plots, polygon surfaces, and ray tracing. The program can show asymptotes, cut away parts of an orbital to reveal internal structure, apply translucence and refraction, add lighting and shadows, and produce animations.

It also supports several forms of stereo viewing: red-blue anaglyphs, stereograms, stereoscopes, LCD shutter glasses, Chromadepth, and overlays.

Output formats include TIFF, PPM, BMP, AVI, and VRML.

That feature list is a small time capsule of late-1990s scientific visualization. VRML mattered. AVI export mattered. A 1.8 MB PDF manual counted as a substantial companion download.

The site’s news archive preserves the software’s development history: version 1.00 in March 1998, later bug fixes, added Digistar output, hosting changes, and a 2004 release that made stereo colors configurable.

The page is valuable because it preserves both the program and the assumptions around it. Scientific visualization did not always happen in a browser or notebook environment. It could be a tiny downloadable executable maintained by one person for years.

Ancient Web: FishCam Has Been Pointing a Camera at Something Since 1994

A webcam is boring now. In 1994, pointing a camera at a fish tank and putting the picture on the web was enough to make history.

FishCam says it began that year inside Netscape, when a camera was trained on a lonely aquarium and began transmitting images onto the still-new World Wide Web.

The site describes itself as the second live camera on the web and the oldest camera site still in existence.

That claim is part of the site’s own history page, and the larger story fits the moment: early webcams were not polished streaming products. They were experiments in proving that a browser could show something happening somewhere else right now.

The point was that it was live

FishCam’s subject hardly mattered.

The technical and cultural trick was the connection between an ordinary physical object and a remote browser window. A tank full of fish became evidence that the web could carry more than documents.

That sounds obvious after decades of livestreams, doorbell cameras, video calls, wildlife feeds, and phones broadcasting from anywhere. In 1994, it was not obvious at all.

The current site still preserves that tiny premise. There is a main page, an information page, a news section, and the camera image itself. At the moment, the site notes that the fish tank is transitioning to a new location, so the camera has been pointed outside instead.

Which is perfect, really.

The camera remains the artifact even when the fish temporarily do not.

The page also warns visitors that a dark or black-and-white image probably means the lights are off and the infrared mode has taken over. That mundane note is exactly what gives old live-camera sites their charm. Nobody is pretending the feed is entertainment television. You might visit and see basically nothing.

But it is happening now.

Ancient Web: Stony Brook Turns Ancient Mazes Into Mathematics

A labyrinth can be a religious symbol, a drawing exercise, an architectural pattern, or a string of numbers.

The Stony Brook page takes familiar historical labyrinths and strips them down to structure.

It compares the Cretan maze with the Jericho maze found in medieval Hebrew manuscripts, then defines a class called simple, alternating, transit mazes.

The terminology sounds dry until the diagrams make it obvious.

A maze as a level sequence

“Transit” means the path runs from the outside to the center without branches. “Alternating” means the path changes direction when it changes levels. “Simple” means it essentially circles each level once.

Once those conditions are met, a maze can be represented by the sequence of levels visited.

The page gives the Cretan pattern as 032147658 and the Jericho pattern as 03452167.

That is the lovely part: two ancient-looking drawings become objects that can be compared mathematically without caring about line thickness, decorative style, or the exact shape of the drawing.

The page also contrasts these with more complicated designs, including the Chartres-style labyrinth and a medieval plan of Constantinople, to show where the rules break.

The result is simultaneously historical and abstract. Archaeology and manuscript studies supply the examples; mathematics explains the family resemblance.

This is exactly the kind of page the old academic web was good at producing. A professor could publish a niche idea with diagrams, sequences, examples, and links without turning it into a journal article, a product, or a content campaign.
