Lighthouse Getaway does not need an archive snapshot to prove it is old. The homepage simply says: “On the Internet since 1993.”

William A. Britten’s site is a photographic tour of lighthouses organized by region: New England, Atlantic towers, the Outer Banks, Florida, the Great Lakes, California, Oregon, Chesapeake Bay and Ireland. It also includes material on lighthouse societies and one of the technologies that made the whole system work—the Fresnel lens.

A website beginning in 1993 is exceptionally early by ordinary public-Web standards. Yet the structure remains immediately understandable three decades later. Pick a region. Pick a light. Read the notes. Look at the photographs.

No account required.

A giant glass beehive that threw light to the horizon

The Fresnel lens page is one of the site’s best surviving technical explanations.

It describes Augustin Fresnel’s 1822 lens as a stack of concentric glass elements designed to bend more of a lamp’s light into a useful beam. Large first-order lenses could stand many feet tall. Smaller orders served harbors, bays and the Great Lakes.

The page explains how “bull’s-eye” sections could create a focused flashing beam as the lens assembly rotated, and how colored panels could produce alternating signals. It also notes that U.S. adoption lagged Europe until the 1850s.

That kind of explanation is exactly what makes a photo site become a reference site.

The photographs are not separated from the machinery. A visitor can look at Cape Canaveral’s first-order lens, the Southeast Light on Block Island, Gay Head Light or Point Bonita and understand why the glass is shaped the way it is.

Britten’s pages also preserve an early-Web travel style that largely disappeared into social platforms. The site is not an algorithmic stream of “10 Most Instagrammable Lighthouses.” It is a hand-built tour created because the author had photographs and wanted to organize them for other people who cared about the subject.

That longevity makes Lighthouse Getaway especially appropriate for CacheRat’s Ancient Web research list. Many websites written about the early Web are younger than this one.

A lighthouse exists to keep a signal visible for as long as somebody still needs it.

Ancient Web: Under the Red Star Cataloged Soviet Uniform Caps Down to the Fakes

Under the Red Star proves that if a government puts enough departments in uniforms, somebody on the Internet will eventually classify all the hats.

The site calls itself a collector’s guide to Soviet military and civilian uniform visor caps of the Cold War period, roughly 1946 through 1991. Its subject sounds narrow until the navigation starts scrolling.

Army, Air Force and Navy are only the beginning. The archive also covers honor guards, the KGB, NKVD/MVD organizations, border guards, police, railways, civilian maritime fleets, civil aviation, forestry, communications, mining ministries, diplomats, courts, customs, fire defense, road transport, students and military cadets.

The site’s author says his own collection reached more than 300 caps. That physical collection became the evidence base for a web reference and, later, several books documenting models, markings, manufacturers and agency histories.

The inside of the hat may matter more than the badge

One of the strongest parts of the site is its material on reproductions and fakes.

The guide warns that outward appearance can be misleading because replica quality improved significantly as reenactment markets expanded. Modern makers began using better visors, more convincing badges and even original period hardware.

So the site teaches collectors to look deeper.

For earlier caps, warning signs can include plastic components, incorrect visor material, synthetic fabric where wool or cotton should be expected, missing interior markings, the wrong sweatband or suspiciously pristine construction. The author repeatedly emphasizes that no single feature is perfect proof. Museum surplus can look unworn, and authentic parts can be attached to the wrong cap.

That is a much more useful lesson than a gallery caption saying “real” or “fake.”

The archive also preserves manufacturer labels, interior stamps, cap-band colors and terminology such as furazhka, cockade, chinstrap and visor. It explains why apparently small changes matter when distinguishing time periods, ranks and agencies.

This is the kind of specialist knowledge that tends to vanish when a collector leaves a forum or an image host disappears. Under the Red Star instead built a structured, long-lived reference around the collection itself.

Ancient Web: NakedEyePlanets.com Made Planet Spotting a Hand-Built Reference

NakedEyePlanets.com is built around a wonderfully old-fashioned astronomical question: what can you identify with your actual eyes if somebody explains where to look?

Martin J. Powell’s site is a large independent guide to Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn and the fainter outer planets, mixing observational advice with star maps, ephemerides, photography, historical notes and current visibility tables.

The homepage is still actively useful in 2026. It includes a month-by-month planet-visibility table and links to planetary positions through 2030. That makes the site unusual in the Ancient Web collection: the structure feels like an older personal reference page, but the astronomical data keeps moving forward.

The basic observing advice is excellent because it explains what the eye is actually seeing.

Planets shift against the background stars from night to night. Bright stars often twinkle more visibly because they are effectively point sources distorted by atmospheric turbulence, while the apparent disks of planets tend to produce steadier light. The page discusses apparent magnitude, angular size, albedo, conjunctions, elongations and apparitions without turning the explanation into a textbook wall.

The sky is a calendar if you know the vocabulary

One of the site’s strengths is that it gives readers the words needed to keep learning.

An “apparition” is the period when a planet is observable during a particular cycle. Mercury and Venus alternate between morning and evening appearances. Superior planets move through longer cycles and are often easiest to observe around opposition. Star charts place them near the ecliptic through the zodiac constellations.

The site also preserves observing history. It explains the classical names of the planets, the Greek and Roman associations behind them, Pluto’s 2006 reclassification and early telescopic discoveries such as Galileo’s observation of the phases of Venus.

Powell uses his own photographs to show how planets actually appear in the sky rather than only presenting spacecraft images. That matters. A Hubble photograph of Jupiter is beautiful, but it does not teach a beginner how to recognize the bright white point above the horizon from a parking lot.

The page is dense in the best old-Web sense: one long document branches into tables, finder charts, definitions, biographies and older apparition maps rather than forcing the visitor through a slideshow interface.

For CacheRat’s Ancient Web research list, this is a good reminder that independent reference sites did not have to become obsolete when they aged. Some simply kept updating the numbers.

Ancient Web: MissouriPlants.com Built a Field Guide for Wild Plants

MissouriPlants.com solves a problem that every beginner with a mystery flower eventually has: “I don’t know what this plant is, so how am I supposed to search for its name?”

The site is a photographic reference to vascular plants documented growing wild in Missouri. Instead of assuming the visitor already knows the genus, the homepage starts with visible traits: flower color and whether the leaves are opposite, whorled, alternate or basal. Separate indexes organize the plants by scientific name, common name and family.

There are also dedicated paths for sedges and rushes, grasses, catkin-bearing plants and non-flowering plants that reproduce by spores.

That is old-school information architecture doing actual work.

The site’s stated goals are to document Missouri’s wild flora and help non-specialists identify it. Native and introduced species are both included because introduced plants make up a substantial part of the flora and matter ecologically. Cultivars and garden forms are excluded unless a plant is genuinely established in the wild.

The project was originally begun by Dan Tenaglia and is now edited by members of the Missouri Native Plant Society.

More than a picture gallery

Species pages are backed by a compact set of ecological data. The site’s documentation explains fields such as Missouri nativity status, Coefficient of Conservation, Coefficient of Wetness, number of Missouri counties reporting a species and state conservation rank.

The source list is equally serious. It cites George Yatskievych’s Steyermark’s Flora of Missouri, Julian Steyermark’s earlier work, the Missouri Botanical Garden’s Tropicos database, BONAP distribution data and later floristic-quality references.

The site also has the good sense to tell people not to eat plants merely because a web page helped them identify something that looks close enough. Its safety discussion points out that difficult species may require expert examination and that “natural” does not mean safe or medically effective.

Another tiny period detail survives in the design notes: the images were deliberately reduced in size to make them practical over slower network connections. The homepage proudly says the pages are HTML 4.0 compatible and will work with all web browsers.

That sentence dates the site more effectively than a gradient background ever could.

MissouriPlants.com is exactly the kind of narrow reference that earns a place in CacheRat’s Ancient Web research list. It is not trying to be the Internet’s universal encyclopedia of botany. It is trying to help somebody standing in Missouri figure out the plant in front of them.

That narrower mission produced a better reference.

Ancient Web: PlayTool Mapped the PC Power Connectors That Could Melt Your Hardware

There are old PC guides that tell you which plug goes where, and then there is PlayTool, which tells you why the plug exists, how many amps it can carry and what happens when somebody gets clever with an adapter.

The page was last updated July 15, 2008 and remains an unusually dense reference to PC power-supply cabling. It covers the original PC motherboard power cables, the four-pin peripheral connector, floppy power, the old six-pin auxiliary connector, SATA power, 20-pin and 24-pin ATX, ATX12V, EPS12V and the six- and eight-pin PCI Express family.

Each section goes well beyond a photograph.

There are pinouts, wire colors, voltage rails, connector part numbers, maximum current figures and practical wattage estimates. A summary table tracks how the connector set changed from the original 1981 PC through ATX in 1995, ATX12V and EPS12V, and PCI Express-era systems.

The page also captures the engineering reason those standards changed. More current through a conductor means more voltage drop and more heat. Adding wires and contacts spreads the load. That is why newer connectors often appear to be older connectors with extra pins bolted on: electrically, that is sometimes almost exactly what happened.

“Black to black” or smoke

The original PC motherboard power arrangement used two adjacent connectors. PlayTool preserves the old technician’s rule for installing them: place the black ground wires together.

Get that wrong and the site’s description becomes beautifully concise: smoke and sparks.

The article is equally skeptical of adapters. A 20-to-24-pin ATX adapter does not magically create additional current-carrying capacity; it merely adds more wire and another set of contacts to the path. The author points out that overloaded connectors can heat up and melt, and that a system which appears stable may become a problem later when a high-draw PCI Express card is installed.

There is also a particularly valuable warning about certain late-1990s Dell systems whose motherboard power connectors looked like standard ATX but were wired differently. Plugging a normal ATX supply into one of those proprietary arrangements could produce exactly the kind of electrical archaeology nobody wants to perform after the smoke clears.

This is why detailed hobbyist technical pages age so well. Product listings disappear. Forum images rot. Manufacturer documentation moves. But a hand-built page with the terms ATX12V 2.0, Molex 39-01-2200, EPS12V, PCI Express 6-pin, SATA power and PS_ON# remains searchable decades later.

That kind of specificity is a major reason CacheRat’s Ancient Web research list is useful as more than a nostalgia catalog.

Old hardware does not care that the Web redesigned itself.

It still wants the right voltage on the right pin.

Ancient Web: Mark Headrick Kept General MIDI Playing After Netscape Died

Mark Headrick’s General MIDI page accidentally became a history of everything browsers stopped doing.

The page is still maintained—the header says it was last modified July 17, 2025—but its real archaeological value is in the layers underneath. Headrick says the page was originally designed around the Crescendo plug-in in Netscape. When that died, he adapted it for Internet Explorer and Windows Media Player. Then Firefox plug-in behavior changed. Then NPAPI disappeared. Then Microsoft removed familiar MIDI plumbing from newer Windows setups.

Instead of abandoning the page, he kept documenting workarounds.

By 2021, his instructions for playing MIDI in Firefox 95 involved the MIDI Player and Jazz-MIDI extensions, CoolSoft VirtualMIDISynth and CoolSoft MIDIMapper. Earlier notes preserve fixes for Firefox 21, Firefox 52, Firefox 55 and Windows 7.

That is a ridiculous amount of infrastructure just to click a .mid file and hear music.

Which is exactly why the page is interesting now.

A music collection wrapped in compatibility history

Headrick organizes the archive by genre: bluegrass, classical, country, dance, electronic, folk, heavy metal, miscellaneous, New Age and Celtic, pop and rock, rap, R&B, trance, television and movie themes.

There is a random-MIDI control and a jukebox. The newest listed file was uploaded in February 2017: “Staying Alive” by the Bee Gees.

Headrick is also careful about authorship. He explicitly says he did not sequence or arrange most of the files and credits belong to the original creators where information exists. His role is collector and maintainer.

One tiny sentence tells you how old the technical assumptions once were: some files were tweaked to sound better on a Creative AWE64.

That name alone opens another rabbit hole—Sound Blaster cards, General MIDI, SoundFonts, hardware wavetable synthesis and the period when the same .mid file could sound dramatically different depending on the sound hardware in your PC.

The page therefore preserves two things at once. There is the music collection itself, and there is a timeline of the machinery required to keep that collection playable as browsers and operating systems changed underneath it.

Modern sites often hide compatibility changes behind a service layer. Old personal pages had to fight them in public.

For CacheRat’s Ancient Web research list, that makes Headrick’s page more than another MIDI directory. It is a living compatibility log stretching from Netscape plug-ins into modern Firefox.

The MIDI files survived.

Ancient Web: Racinehistory.com Built a Family-Run Wisconsin History Archive

Racinehistory.com opens with a command more websites should probably use: “PLEASE PRESERVE RACINE WISCONSIN HISTORY.”

The site carries a 2000 copyright for Oak Clearing Farm & Museum and was built as a community-oriented outlet for Racine County history. Its navigation is gloriously specific: Racine County, area manufacturing, “Bottled Belle City,” people and places, Oak Clearing Farm & Museum, a history-links page, a 1699–1899 timeline and a 1900-to-present timeline.

This is not history written from 30,000 feet.

It is the kind of site that assumes a factory, bottle, farm, street or local personality can be worth documenting because somebody in the county will eventually want to know what it was.

A central figure is author and historian Gerald L. Karwowski. The homepage describes him as a former J.I. Case employee with a 30-year career, a Racine landmarks commissioner, a trustee of the Racine County Historical Society and a collector who spent decades assembling local material. It also notes that he presented a program called “Racine in History” to hundreds of groups.

That background explains the site’s shape. It feels less like a modern tourism page and more like a collector’s filing cabinet opened to the public.

Local manufacturing history is easy to lose

Racine’s industrial past gives the site unusually useful long-tail material.

Company names, product names, factories, bottles, photographs and family recollections are precisely the kinds of things that disappear when local newspapers change systems, historical societies redesign their sites or search engines decide a twenty-year-old HTML page is not important enough to surface.

A local-history archive does not need millions of visitors to justify itself. It needs the right visitor at the right time.

Someone researching a J.I. Case employee, a Racine manufacturer, an old farm, a neighborhood landmark or a Belle City bottle may find that one home-built page contains the clue missing everywhere else.

The site’s welcoming language also captures an older Web instinct. The authors explicitly say they want people to learn about their community so they will preserve and cherish it. There is no attempt to turn every page into a funnel. The point is the material itself.

That is exactly the sort of narrow documentary value the CacheRat Ancient Web research list is meant to surface. A national history site can tell you what happened in Wisconsin. A local collector can tell you what was on that block.

Those are different jobs.

The second one is usually much harder to reconstruct after the people who remember it are gone.

Ancient Web: Mexican Masks Cataloged Dance Masks, Patina and Fakes

MexicanMasks.us is what happens when a collector decides the back of a mask may be more interesting than the face.

The site calls itself a noncommercial blend of mask collecting, Mexican culture and related curiosities, written by “The Mask Monger.” Its copyright range runs from 2002 to 2011, and the archive still reads like a guided tour through one person’s collection rather than a polished museum database.

That is part of its value.

Entries cover Pastorela devil masks from Zacatecas and Jalisco, Torito dance characters from Guanajuato, Viejitos from Michoacán, Catrines or Paragueros from Tlaxcala, masks from Guerrero and Veracruz, and a Guatemalan Christians-and-Moors example. The pages do more than label them. They discuss wood, papier-mâché, felt, horse hair, animal horns, leather tongues, glass eyes, articulated jaws and even movable eyelids.

The collector is especially interested in evidence of actual use.

A dark, worn interior surface can matter because it supports the story that a mask was danced rather than manufactured yesterday for an export shop. The site warns that false patina, fake wear and staged repairs can be used to make pieces seem older. One entry bluntly says the back of an old mask can be more important to a collector than the front.

A folk-art archive with opinions attached

This is not neutral institutional prose. The Mask Monger jokes, argues, tells purchase stories and occasionally wanders into judgments that a modern museum catalog would phrase much more carefully.

That is exactly why the site needs to be read as a primary artifact of collecting culture rather than as an unquestionable academic authority.

The site itself practically shouts the same warning. Near the bottom of the main page it says that using the site for academic research is not recommended and is done at the reader’s peril.

Fair enough.

But the archive is still useful because it preserves the collector-level vocabulary that helps a researcher know what to search next: Baile de los Viejitos, Negrito Colmilludo, Pastorela, Torito, Catrines, Paragueros, patina, mask backs, gesso, carved hardwood and papier-mâché carnival masks.

It even includes side material on Zapotec counting audio, powder-post beetle damage, authenticity, missed purchases and what the author calls “Dead Uncle Masks.”

This is old-Web specialization at full strength. A person had a collection, strong opinions and enough curiosity to build an index around it. CacheRat’s Ancient Web research list is full of sites like this because search value often lives in exactly these narrow, human-made archives.

The page is not a museum catalog.

It is something stranger and, for web archaeology, almost as useful: a collector’s notebook that stayed online.

Ancient Web: EarthbagBuilding.com Documented Houses Made From Bags of Dirt

A wall made from bags of dirt sounds like emergency construction until somebody starts discussing thermal mass, polypropylene, corbelled domes and barbed wire between courses.

EarthbagBuilding.com is an independent reference assembled by Kelly Hart and Dr. Owen Geiger to spread information about building permanent structures from bags or tubes filled with earthen material. The site covers history, projects, plans, testing, articles, workshops, videos and practical questions about a construction method that grew partly from the same sandbag logic used for flood barriers and military fortifications.

Its history section is especially useful because it traces the technique beyond the simplified story that one person invented it.

Kelly Hart notes that Gernot Minke and the Research Laboratory for Experimental Building at Kassel Polytechnic College were experimenting with fabric-packed materials by 1976. A stacked-bag earthquake-resistant prototype was built in Guatemala in 1978. Architect Nader Khalili later connected bag construction with traditional adobe domes and arches after participating in a 1984 NASA symposium about building shelters on the Moon.

That lunar-construction detour eventually helped popularize what Khalili called Superadobe: long polypropylene bags or tubes filled with moist earth, stacked into arches and domes, often with strands of barbed wire between the courses.

The Web page then follows the idea outward through builders, books and experiments rather than stopping at a heroic-inventor story. Hart says he began experimenting with earthbags in 1997. Paulina Wojciechowska published a full book on the subject in 2001, and Kaki Hunter and Doni Kiffmeyer followed with another in 2004.

Dirt can be insulation or thermal mass

One of the site’s better technical points is that “earthbag” describes the container system more than the fill material.

Bags filled with soil can provide thermal mass. Bags filled with lighter materials such as perlite, vermiculite, crushed volcanic stone or rice hulls can provide insulation. Gravel-filled bags can be used in foundation applications. Polypropylene resists moisture better than burlap but needs protection from sunlight, so permanent walls are normally plastered.

That combination of history and practical detail is why the site has aged better than a gallery of unusual houses would have. It records the vocabulary needed to keep researching: earthbag, Superadobe, corbelled dome, thermal mass, polypropylene bag, barbed-wire course and natural plaster.

The site also carries an explicit liability disclaimer, which is sensible. Experimental building systems involve structural, code and safety questions that a web page cannot settle for every project.

For CacheRat, this is the useful side of old independent-web publishing. A specialized building method accumulated its own bibliography, terminology, project photos and arguments in one place instead of being reduced to a thirty-second “house made of dirt” clip. Ancient Web: Video Games 101 Froze Console Specs in the Era That Cared About Bits

Video Games 101 comes from a period when explaining a console meant putting the CPU clock speed, RAM, color palette and screen resolution right next to the history.

Eric Arnol-Martin’s site, carrying a 2012 copyright notice, describes itself as a source for detailed history, information and specifications for video-game consoles. It also contains Tomb Raider walkthroughs, icons and wallpaper, because independent websites rarely respected the departmental boundaries a modern content strategy would insist upon.

The console section runs from older systems such as the Nintendo Entertainment System and Super Nintendo through the Sega Saturn, PlayStation, Nintendo 64, Dreamcast, PlayStation 2, GameCube and Xbox, then onward into the Xbox 360, Wii, PlayStation 3, Wii U, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One era.

Each entry pairs a short historical description with “Quick Specs.”

Those specs are the good stuff.

Hardware history before every number became searchable metadata

The pages record CPU names and frequencies, memory amounts, graphics capabilities, resolutions and other compact hardware facts. The handheld section similarly covers machines such as the Nintendo DS, PSP, Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation Vita.

The historical prose is worth reading as a period artifact rather than treating every claim as definitive. Some summaries compress complicated market histories aggressively, and the site occasionally preserves the perspective of the moment it was written. A Nintendo DS page, for example, discusses stores selling out around February 2005 rather than describing the machine from the comfortable distance of two decades later.

That is part of the value.

A current encyclopedia can tell you what ultimately happened. An older enthusiast page can tell you what facts seemed important while the hardware was still culturally alive: bits, clock speeds, launch competition, backwards compatibility and whether a new handheld was actually sitting on store shelves.

The site has also picked up some of the grime that accumulates around long-lived domains, including an unrelated gambling link on the current homepage. That does not erase the surviving console material, but it is a useful reminder that keeping a domain online is not the same thing as preserving it perfectly.

For retrocomputing research, exact model names and specifications provide the long-tail search surface that CacheRat wants from the 1,967 Ancient Web Domains research list. Old enthusiast pages often preserve both technical numbers and the contemporary assumptions surrounding them.
