EarthbagBuilding.com is an independent reference assembled by Kelly Hart and Dr. Owen Geiger to spread information about building permanent structures from bags or tubes filled with earthen material. The site covers history, projects, plans, testing, articles, workshops, videos and practical questions about a construction method that grew partly from the same sandbag logic used for flood barriers and military fortifications.

Its history section is especially useful because it traces the technique beyond the simplified story that one person invented it.

Kelly Hart notes that Gernot Minke and the Research Laboratory for Experimental Building at Kassel Polytechnic College were experimenting with fabric-packed materials by 1976. A stacked-bag earthquake-resistant prototype was built in Guatemala in 1978. Architect Nader Khalili later connected bag construction with traditional adobe domes and arches after participating in a 1984 NASA symposium about building shelters on the Moon.

That lunar-construction detour eventually helped popularize what Khalili called Superadobe: long polypropylene bags or tubes filled with moist earth, stacked into arches and domes, often with strands of barbed wire between the courses.

Bags filled with soil can provide thermal mass. Bags filled with lighter materials such as perlite, vermiculite, crushed volcanic stone or rice hulls can provide insulation. Gravel-filled bags can be used in foundation applications. Polypropylene resists moisture better than burlap but needs protection from sunlight, so permanent walls are normally plastered.

That combination of history and practical detail is why the site has aged better than a gallery of unusual houses would have. It records the vocabulary needed to keep researching: earthbag, Superadobe, corbelled dome, thermal mass, polypropylene bag, barbed-wire course and natural plaster.
