Ancient Web: Total Hardware 99 Kept the Jumper Settings for Forgotten PC Cards

If you have ever stared at an unidentified ISA card and wondered which two plastic jumpers will either fix it or ruin your afternoon, Total Hardware 99 is the kind of archive you want nearby.

The site preserves a huge hardware-reference database from the era when configuring a PC often meant moving jumpers, flipping DIP switches and consulting photocopied diagrams whose originals had disappeared years earlier.

The surviving pages cover motherboards, modems, controllers, network hardware, video cards and other expansion devices. Entries are organized less like modern reviews and more like service notes: manufacturer, model, bus type, chipset, processor, memory limits, connectors, configurable settings and jumper positions.

A motherboard page is basically a wiring confession

One representative entry documents a JS-168A 80286 motherboard.

It lists a 12 MHz processor, up to 4 MB of onboard DRAM, several possible BIOS families and connector positions for the power LED, keylock, reset switch, speaker and turbo controls.

Then it gets to the reason archives like this survive: tables for wait states, turbo selection, monitor type, parity, DRAM bank population and jumper combinations.

That information is boring right up until you need it.

The modem section is even more sprawling. One page for 8-bit ISA modems runs through products from 3Com, US Robotics, Acer, Boca Research, Compaq, Hayes, Diamond Multimedia and dozens of companies that barely exist in current search results. Model names include everything from 1200-baud boards to 56K voice faxmodems.

For retrocomputing work, exact model strings matter. So do obscure revisions.

A card labeled M144IW is not interchangeable as research evidence with a generic statement that Boca once made modems. A jumper table for one motherboard revision can be useless—or dangerous—when applied to another.

Total Hardware 99 preserved that specificity.

The design reflects the task. There is little storytelling because the original user was probably holding a screwdriver and trying to make a machine boot.

That makes the archive a strong example of old technical Web publishing. It captures information that manufacturers often treated as disposable because each product generation made the previous one commercially irrelevant.

Decades later, the commercial value may be gone while the repair value has increased.

A modern support site usually begins with “select your current product.”

Ancient Web: Bubble Bobble Memories Kept a Taito Fan Site at 800 by 600

Bubble Bobble Memories greets visitors with one of the most honest pieces of period Web documentation possible: “Best viewed at 800 x 600 with a javascript compatible browser.”

The site is a fan archive for Taito’s Bubble Bobble and the games that followed it. Its stated long-term goal is to collect information, artwork and paraphernalia connected to Bub, Bob and the wider series.

The layout is not pretending to be retro. It simply survived.

One update is dated October 24, 2001 and apologizes for another server move while announcing that the message boards are closed for the time being. A much later update from December 29, 2022 notes the Nintendo Switch Arcade Archives release.

At the bottom, Jake Smith describes the site as “rarely maintained.”

That may be the ideal maintenance schedule for an old fan site.

Before every game had a wiki

Fan sites like this filled a role that later moved into centralized databases, forums and wikis.

A single enthusiast would decide what deserved preservation: character art, screenshots, game information, odd promotional material, sequel relationships, personal observations and whatever else could be gathered from magazines, manuals, arcade culture and other fans.

The result was not standardized.

That was the point.

A wiki tries to make every page look like every other page. A personal fan archive tells you what this particular person thought mattered.

Bubble Bobble is especially suited to that treatment because the series accumulated decades of ports, sequels, artwork and regional releases. A page made for it in the early Web era can become historical evidence about the fandom as well as about the games.

The old technical assumptions help date that evidence. An 800×600 recommendation, JavaScript warning and server-move notice are not decorative nostalgia. They describe the environment in which the site was actually maintained.

There is also something reassuring about the 2022 update appearing on a page that still looks structurally tied to 2001.

The Web usually treats survival as a reason to redesign.

Bubble Bobble Memories treats survival as a reason not to break what is already there.

For the Ancient Web project, that makes it useful beyond gaming history. It is a surviving example of how fandom was organized when owning a subject meant registering a domain, building the pages yourself and hoping people bookmarked them before the next server migration.

Ancient Web: Ford Scorpio Owners Built the Workshop Manual Haynes Never Made

There is a particular kind of website created when a complicated machine becomes old enough for the manufacturer to stop caring but not old enough for its owners to stop driving it.

FordScorpio.co.uk is that website for the European Ford Scorpio built from late 1994 through 1998.

The site’s FAQ explains the problem plainly. Only about 124,000 of these Scorpios were produced, and the production numbers were apparently too small to justify a Haynes repair manual.

That left owners with an electronically complex executive car, no familiar aftermarket book and an increasing need to fix things themselves.

So the Web filled the gap.

Ford gave the owners the dealer information

The most important detail in the archive is buried inside the FAQ and newbie guide.

According to the site, Ford Europe supplied the maintainers with its Technical Information System material in 2002 and permitted the workshop information to be placed online. The files were converted into downloadable PDF sections so owners could use the same service instructions relied upon by dealers.

That is an extraordinary example of a manufacturer archive becoming community infrastructure.

The site surrounds those documents with practical knowledge: fault-finding pages, buyer advice, servicing and repair sections, mailing-list and forum references, and explanations aimed at somebody who has just bought the car and discovered that ordinary assumptions no longer apply.

The newbie page begins by warning that the Scorpio is not simply a Granada wearing a different badge. Engines, transmissions, suspension, engine management and electrical systems differ.

Then comes the harder warning: you cannot just walk into a parts shop and buy the book.

Sites like this mattered because enthusiast knowledge was often the only bridge between factory documentation and a vehicle’s second or third decade of life.

A manufacturer service system assumes trained technicians, dealership tools and a supported parts network. An owner site has to translate that world into questions such as: What fails? What should I check before buying one? Which symptom points to which subsystem? Can I get the original procedure?

FordScorpio.co.uk does exactly that.

Its pages still look like the era when an automotive website was a shared filing cabinet rather than a stream of sponsored product reviews. Tables, FAQs, PDFs and linked procedures carry most of the weight.

For digital preservation, this is valuable beyond the car itself. It documents how owners kept technically orphaned hardware alive when the commercial documentation ecosystem had already moved on.

That pattern repeats across the Ancient Web: when official support ends, somebody with a domain name and too much patience becomes the library.

Ancient Web: Caveman Chemistry Made Students Build Civilization from Scratch

Caveman Chemistry begins with a premise most chemistry courses avoid: if civilization is so impressive, try rebuilding pieces of it yourself.

The surviving site documents Chemistry 104, “From Caveman to Chemist,” a course built around landmark technologies on the road to modern industrial civilization.

Students were not simply expected to recognize concepts on a test. The course moved from fire and stone tools through metals, batteries, paper, soap, glass, photography and other technologies by requiring actual products.

The old page still carries a 2000 lecture schedule and a list of projects that reads like somebody emptied human technological history onto a chemistry bench: stone, metals, batteries, electrochemistry, electromagnetism, twine, dye, weaving, paper, fire, pottery, potash, lye soap, lime, glass, photography, mead and alcohol.

Your product either works or it doesn’t

The grading system was unusually concrete.

Most projects combined a written quiz with a physical product. Passing required both. Some projects were quiz-only, some involved papers, and some could be completed as group or “tribal” efforts.

The site says six completed projects earned a D and fifteen earned an A.

It also makes clear that students could retry failed quizzes, but not endlessly on the same day. The emphasis was mastery rather than accumulating partial credit.

Individual project pages preserve the teaching philosophy in more detail.

The chloralkali lesson uses sodium, chlorine and sodium chloride to attack the lazy idea that an element and its compounds share the same properties. The acids section starts with vinegar and fermentation, then moves through mineral acids, metallurgy and salt formation. A metathesis exercise makes students predict whether pairs of ionic compounds will react in water and explain why.

This is not “chemistry made easy.”

It is chemistry made physical.

The site’s tone is part of the experience. A page titled “Top Ten Reasons to Drop This Course” includes complaints such as not wanting to know how soap is made because soap can be bought at the grocery store, or believing a previous high-school chemistry grade should excuse hard work.

There is even a note offering a bonus to students who found a particular Web page before a specified September 2000 deadline.

That tiny detail dates the educational Web better than any redesign could.

Caveman Chemistry survives as both a science resource and a record of a teaching style: build something, understand what happened, and connect modern industry to technologies people once had to discover one painful step at a time.

Ancient Web: The Guide to Grammar and Writing Became a 600-Log Classroom

Before every writing question produced twelve SEO articles explaining the same comma, Professor Charles Darling built one large grammar site and kept answering people.

Darling developed the Guide in 1996 at Capital Community College, initially to help his own students write reports and research papers and to give them a place to look up grammatical problems independently.

Then the Web did what the old Web sometimes did best: a local teaching tool escaped its original classroom and became public infrastructure.

The memorial page for Darling says the site eventually received upwards of 30,000 hits per day. More important than the traffic is what accumulated there.

The Guide’s index contains hundreds of references covering grammar, composition, punctuation, usage and documentation. There are interactive quizzes, frequently asked questions and the wonderful GrammarLogs: archived answers to questions submitted by visitors.

Ask Grammar became a dataset of ordinary confusion

The GrammarLogs date back to March 1997.

Each completed volume contains 100 questions, organized as ten logs of ten. The archive grew to roughly 600 logged questions across its historical volumes, and the page tells visitors to search the existing material before submitting another question.

That design captures something a textbook cannot.

A grammar book tells you what its author thinks people need to know. A question archive tells you what people actually got stuck on.

The site’s alphabetical index ranges from articles, abbreviations and active voice through argument essays, apostrophes, auxiliary verbs and documentation styles. The result is less elegant than a modern knowledge base and much more useful than a stream of isolated blog posts.

Darling also insisted that the Guide remain free. The memorial page recalls him joking that if he had collected a dime for every email, he would not have needed to do his own home painting.

That attitude is part of the site’s historical value.

A great deal of educational material from the early Web was created by teachers who treated publishing as an extension of teaching, not as a lead-generation funnel.

The Guide still carries the visual fingerprints of that era: small graphics, dense link lists, text-only alternatives and pages that assume the reader is there to find an answer rather than be retained as a metric.

For CacheRat’s Ancient Web project, this is exactly the kind of survivor worth documenting. It is not important because the design is old. It is important because twenty-plus years of teaching decisions, questions and explanations remain arranged in one human-made structure.

Ancient Web: StarLing DB Built a CGI Laboratory for Comparing Languages

StarLing DB looks less like a modern website than a control panel for somebody trying to reverse-engineer human language.

Its pages expose a collection of linguistic databases through old-fashioned CGI forms: text boxes, checkboxes, field selectors and query options. The interface is dense because the underlying data is dense.

A global typological database can be searched by language, alternate name, dialect, location, population, classification, dictionary and grammar sources, consonant system, syllable structure, tones, stress, noun number, noun classes, gender, demonstratives, pronouns, syntax, ergativity, noun incorporation and preposition/postposition behavior.

That is not a navigation menu. It is a research instrument.

The database still feels like the database

StarLing was developed around comparative and historical linguistics. Individual datasets include etymological material for language families as well as dictionaries and typological resources.

The Altaic etymology interface, for example, exposes fields for reconstructed Proto-Altaic forms, meanings and correspondences in Turkic, Mongolian, Tungusic-Manchu, Korean and Japanese.

Whether a particular long-range reconstruction is accepted by every linguist is a separate scholarly question. What matters from a Web-history perspective is that the site exposes the underlying records instead of flattening them into a narrative article.

The Global Lexicostatistical Database adds another layer. Its documentation explains that data are morphologically segmented to support manual and automated analysis, and that entries are distributed in multiple forms: searchable online data, print-ready PDFs and editable tables.

The older download page is especially evocative. Etymological databases appear as downloadable packages with names such as altaic.exe, ie.exe, cauc.exe, sintib.exe and drav.exe, many dated 2005. Dictionaries are distributed the same way.

This is the scientific Web before every database became an API product with an account tier.

The CGI server even displays counters for pages generated by its scripts. One current query page reports more than 2.4 million generated pages.

That number is not meaningful as traffic. It is meaningful as evidence of a site architecture that has been answering structured queries for a very long time.

For digital archaeologists, StarLing is useful because both the knowledge and the machinery remain visible. You can see the fields researchers cared about, the file formats they distributed, the database categories they used and the awkward but direct interface that connected a browser to the underlying records.

A redesign could make it prettier.

It would have to work hard not to make it less informative.

Ancient Web: Colin Pykett Built a 900,000-Word Organ Engineering Reference

There are websites about pipe organs, and then there is Colin Pykett’s website, which has quietly accumulated enough technical writing to become its own small library.

By the site’s own count, it passed its twenty-sixth birthday in 2025. It now contains more than 120 detailed articles totaling roughly 900,000 words, plus more than four and a half hours of organ recordings.

Pykett describes it as one of the most stable and extensive internet resources for pipe and electronic organs. The page is unusually explicit about what it does not contain: no cookies, banners, popups, ads or requests for money just for visiting.

That feels almost radical in 2026.

Engineering first, mystique second

The site’s core is technical.

Its articles cover pipe-organ acoustics, electronic organs, digital synthesis, tuning, temperament, loudspeakers, tone generation and the practical problems involved in making an electronic instrument behave like a pipe organ instead of merely playing samples of one.

That breadth matters because organ technology sits at an awkward intersection of music, architecture, fluid dynamics, acoustics, electronics and psychoacoustics.

A pipe organ is a machine distributed through a building. An electronic organ is an attempt to recreate many of those interactions through circuitry and speakers. Pykett’s archive treats both as engineering systems rather than mysterious boxes that happen to produce Bach.

The site also documents a large three-manual electronic organ built and refined over many years. Visitor comments quoted on the homepage repeatedly compare its sound to real instruments, while Pykett includes recordings made under different conditions, some acoustically and some electrically.

He even warns listeners that the tracks were recorded at different levels and suggests beginning playback quietly to protect equipment and ears.

That is the sort of sentence written by someone who has actually built things.

The recordings themselves form another layer of preservation. Older tracks retain analog noise, piston thumps and page turns instead of being polished into synthetic perfection. Pykett specifically notes that the performances are played by real people in real time rather than generated from MIDI sequences.

The result is an old-Web reference site in the best sense: one specialist, one domain, decades of accumulated work and almost no pressure to behave like a media company.

A search engine can answer a narrow question. A site like this preserves the surrounding knowledge that tells you which questions were worth asking in the first place.

Ancient Web: Antique-Microscopes Preserved the Instruments Chemistry Used Before Electronics

Long before a laboratory instrument had a touchscreen, it probably had brass, glass, adjustment screws and a manufacturer name stamped somewhere a collector would later spend an afternoon trying to date.

Antique-Microscopes.com is a private collection of early optical instruments, and its chemistry section is a compact museum of how scientists measured light, composition and microscopic structure before modern electronics took over the bench.

The collector says he has been collecting antique microscopes for more than forty years. The larger site ranges from early 18th-century instruments into the early 20th century, while the chemistry page focuses heavily on instruments from the late 1800s and early 1900s.

That page alone includes spectroscopes, refractometers, polarimeters, microspectroscopes and chemical microscopes from makers such as John Browning, Carl Zeiss, E. Leitz, Nachet and Schmidt & Haensch.

The names describe whole vanished workflows

A modern laboratory might combine several measurements into compact digital equipment. The old instruments expose each operation as a separate physical machine.

A Pulfrich refractometer measures refractive properties. A Laurent-type polarimeter deals with optical rotation. A direct-vision spectroscope separates light into a spectrum. A microspectroscope bolts spectroscopy onto microscopic observation.

The site gets especially interesting when it connects the hardware to its inventors and users.

One page documents a simple chemical microscope made by Louis Joseph Deleuil around 1835 from a design associated with chemist François-Vincent Raspail. Its large glass stage and movable arm were suited to specimens in water, a configuration historically described as having an “aquatic motion.”

Another page covers a Nachet inverted chemical microscope from around 1885, descended from an instrument developed by J. Lawrence Smith in the 1850s. Instead of merely photographing the antique, the page reproduces period descriptions explaining why the specimen was viewed from below and how illumination was arranged.

That is the difference between a gallery and a reference archive.

The site index also explains how dates are established: maker names and addresses, serial-number lists, manufacturer archives, original delivery books, contemporary journals, catalogs and comparison with established museum collections.

Sometimes the exact year is known. Sometimes the date is an informed approximation. The site says so.

That kind of uncertainty is useful. Old-Web specialist archives are often strongest when the maintainer documents not only the object, but also how the conclusion was reached.

For researchers, restorers and historians of science, pages like these preserve the vocabulary needed to identify instruments that otherwise look like elaborate brass contraptions from a cabinet.

Ancient Web: Currell.net Turned Airships, Rockets and Titanic into Printable Card Models

Some websites explain old machines. Currell.net lets you print one, cut it apart, fold it, glue it back together and discover exactly how much patience you actually possess.

Ralph Currell’s collection of downloadable card models has the wonderfully practical structure of an older hobby site: choose a subject, download the PDF parts and instructions, print them on suitable stock, and build the thing yourself.

The free-model library covers airplanes, airships, spacecraft, rockets, buildings, land vehicles, ships, fictional machines and proposed designs. Each model gets a scale and difficulty rating rather than a sales pitch.

The recommended material is 67-pound cover stock, roughly 0.2 mm thick. That is the kind of detail that tells you the person maintaining the page expects somebody to actually make the model.

The subjects are half the fun

Currell’s archive is not confined to familiar aircraft kits.

There is a 1:32 V-2 rocket, a Soviet N-1 lunar booster available at 1:144 and 1:96 scale, the R.100 and R.101 British passenger airships, the Cardington airship shed, a 200-foot mooring mast, SpaceShipOne, Concorde, Titanic, Olympic and Britannic.

There is also Frank Lloyd Wright’s proposed Mile-High Illinois skyscraper and H. G. Wells’s fictional Land Ironclad.

The N-1 model is particularly ambitious. At 1:144 scale it stands nearly 30 inches high. An enlarged 1:96 version approaches 45 inches and needs a large-format printer.

The airship pages mix modeling with useful historical context. The R.100 page describes the successful 1930 transatlantic trip to Canada. The R.101 page covers the doomed British government airship, while the Cardington shed and mooring-mast pages preserve infrastructure surrounding the Imperial Airship Scheme.

That combination matters. The model files are not detached craft templates; they are small gateways into transportation history.

The archive says copyright 1999-2021, which places it squarely in the long-lived personal-Web tradition. Its interface is mostly categories, thumbnails, dimensions, PDFs and instructions. There is very little between the visitor and the useful object.

A modern version would probably turn each model into a product card with a newsletter popup and six tracking scripts.

Currell.net gives you a PDF and assumes you brought scissors.

That is better.

For researchers interested in the independent Web, the site’s value is not only the models themselves. It shows how much detailed technical and historical material accumulated around hobby pages when publishing did not require converting every interest into a platform.

Ancient Web: 101 Bananas Is What Happened Before Personal Websites Needed a Niche

101Bananas.com feels less like a website with a topic and more like somebody emptied several decades of notebooks, clippings and obsessions onto a server.

The homepage promises art, poems, banana miscellanea, a Banana Graveyard, a Scholar’s Library, film studies and a “Garden of Enigmatic Delights.” It also warns that the site is optimized for desktop computers and that some pages do not behave especially well on tiny screens.

That warning is almost a mission statement.

The site has no interest in compressing itself into one clean content category.

One section collects grave photographs and historical notes. Another documents banana festivals, old clippings and cultural oddities. The Scholar’s Library mixes recommended reading with carefully prepared HTML editions and transcriptions of older texts.

The Melville page for The Lightning-Rod Man, for example, explains that the editors compared the 1854 magazine printing with the later Piazza Tales text line by line while preparing the web version.

That is not casual link aggregation.

It is amateur editorial work in the best sense of the word.

The personal Web was allowed to sprawl

The site’s credited curator, Zimmerman Skyrat, treats the domain like an attic that happens to have navigation.

There are art projects made from banana stickers, old newspaper material, literary recommendations, photographs, jokes, cultural history and things that appear to have been saved simply because somebody thought they were worth saving.

The Banana Graveyard is a particularly good example. It turns cemetery photographs into miniature historical pages, sometimes branching into newspaper accounts, books or related cultural artifacts.

The result is messy in a productive way.

Modern publishing systems constantly ask what a site is about. Search optimization asks for a keyword. Social platforms ask which audience bucket should receive the post. Analytics asks which content performs.

101 Bananas asks whether the webmaster found something interesting.

That older model produced sites whose organization reflected a human mind instead of a market segment.

Not everything in the collection is equally important. That is also part of the charm. A personal archive can put a serious literary transcription next to a ridiculous banana artifact without needing to justify the taxonomy to anybody.

The old Web had room for museums, technical references and serious scholarship.

It also had room for one person to build a library around bananas and whatever else wandered through the door.
