Caveman Chemistry begins with a premise most chemistry courses avoid: if civilization is so impressive, try rebuilding pieces of it yourself.

The surviving site documents Chemistry 104, “From Caveman to Chemist,” a course built around landmark technologies on the road to modern industrial civilization.
Students were not simply expected to recognize concepts on a test. The course moved from fire and stone tools through metals, batteries, paper, soap, glass, photography and other technologies by requiring actual products.
The old page still carries a 2000 lecture schedule and a list of projects that reads like somebody emptied human technological history onto a chemistry bench: stone, metals, batteries, electrochemistry, electromagnetism, twine, dye, weaving, paper, fire, pottery, potash, lye soap, lime, glass, photography, mead and alcohol.
Your product either works or it doesn’t
The grading system was unusually concrete.
Most projects combined a written quiz with a physical product. Passing required both. Some projects were quiz-only, some involved papers, and some could be completed as group or “tribal” efforts.
The site says six completed projects earned a D and fifteen earned an A.
It also makes clear that students could retry failed quizzes, but not endlessly on the same day. The emphasis was mastery rather than accumulating partial credit.

The chloralkali lesson uses sodium, chlorine and sodium chloride to attack the lazy idea that an element and its compounds share the same properties. The acids section starts with vinegar and fermentation, then moves through mineral acids, metallurgy and salt formation. A metathesis exercise makes students predict whether pairs of ionic compounds will react in water and explain why.
This is not “chemistry made easy.”
It is chemistry made physical.
The site’s tone is part of the experience. A page titled “Top Ten Reasons to Drop This Course” includes complaints such as not wanting to know how soap is made because soap can be bought at the grocery store, or believing a previous high-school chemistry grade should excuse hard work.
There is even a note offering a bonus to students who found a particular Web page before a specified September 2000 deadline.
That tiny detail dates the educational Web better than any redesign could.
Caveman Chemistry survives as both a science resource and a record of a teaching style: build something, understand what happened, and connect modern industry to technologies people once had to discover one painful step at a time.
