Ancient Web: The Abyss of Wonder Preserves Alexei Panshin’s Personal Web Library

The Abyss of Wonder is the kind of author website that makes the modern definition of “author website” look embarrassingly small.

Alexei Panshin maintained the site from 1999 until 2022. It became a place to publish new and older short stories, criticism, essays, song lyrics, book material, artwork that interested him, and long pieces that did not need to fit neatly inside somebody else’s publishing schedule.

Panshin was already an established science-fiction writer and critic before the Web existed. His novel Rite of Passage won a Nebula Award, and The World Beyond the Hill, written with Cory Panshin, won a Hugo Award for its history and interpretation of science fiction.

The website gave that body of work another form.

After Panshin’s death in August 2022, the site was preserved as he left it, with an explicit warning that some information may now be outdated.

That is a better preservation choice than silently modernizing it.

A personal archive instead of a landing page

The Abyss contains far more than biography and purchase links.

There are substantial works of criticism, including material on Robert Heinlein and science-fiction history. There are essays about writers and ideas. There are complete texts, indexes, background notes, personal recollections, and pages that lead into other pages in the old-Web manner where a reader is expected to wander rather than consume a carefully optimized funnel.

One section preserves Heinlein in Dimension, Panshin’s book-length critical study of Robert Heinlein. Elsewhere the site contains the story behind that book, accounts of Panshin’s contentious relationship with Heinlein, essays on other writers, and material whose value comes partly from being presented in the author’s own chosen context.

That is difficult to reproduce after the fact.

An archive can save text. It is harder to save the structure an author built around the text: which pieces were grouped together, which explanations were attached, which older arguments were revisited, and what the author considered worth placing beside them.

The site’s survival also catches an important period in literary history. For decades, writers needed publishers, magazines, fanzines, conventions, or correspondence networks to circulate long-form commentary. Personal websites allowed established authors to place enormous amounts of material directly in public without waiting for somebody else to approve the page count.

Ancient Web: The Delta Launch Vehicle Site Tracked a Rocket Family for Decades

Kevin S. Forsyth’s Delta rocket site has the feel of somebody who started keeping notes because the official story was too scattered and then accidentally built one of the better surviving specialist archives on the subject.

The site traces Delta back through Thor missile hardware and the earliest American launch-vehicle programs. It follows the family through lettered variants, numbered designations, solid boosters, upper stages, payload fairings, communications satellites, GPS launches, scientific missions, and the long operational life of Delta II.

The site has been online long enough that its own counters reference visits beginning December 4, 1997.

That makes the archive part of two histories at once: the history of the rocket and the history of enthusiasts using the Web to document technical subjects in public.

The flight log is the center of gravity

The most useful section is the flight log.

It lists launches beginning with the failed Echo 1 attempt on May 13, 1960, followed by the successful Echo 1A flight three months later. Entries include dates, flight numbers, spacecraft, vehicle versions, managing organizations, launch sites, payload weights, outcomes, and orbital information.

Other pages explain vehicle designations, performance specifications, historical sources, and the sometimes confusing relationships between Delta variants.

Forsyth also kept news entries while the vehicles were still flying. A 1998 item covers the Delta 7326 launch of Deep Space 1. A 2002 update documents a five-satellite Iridium replacement launch after multiple weather and equipment delays. Those pages now read less like news and more like field notes from the operational life of the program.

The site’s final schedule page eventually reached an unusual endpoint for a launch calendar: there were no more original Delta launches to schedule.

The era had ended.

One remaining vehicle was noted as being placed in the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex rocket garden.

The archive also makes editorial choices instead of pretending to cover everything. Forsyth explains why Delta IV is not treated as part of the main historical sequence despite sharing the name and some program heritage. That kind of boundary-setting is useful because technical history gets muddy when branding, corporate lineage, and hardware lineage are treated as the same thing.

Ancient Web: My Old Computers Built a 260-Machine Museum Out of One Man’s Workshop

Randy Byrnes’ computer museum begins with a sentence that explains half of retrocomputing history by itself: in 1982, he saw a ZX-81 computer kit advertised for $79.95 and bought it.

The machine had to be assembled. Byrnes had an electronics background and wanted to build a computer anyway, so the ZX-81 became the first machine in a collection that eventually grew past 260 computers.

The history page then walks directly through the early home-computer price wars.

After the ZX-81 came a VIC-20. Byrnes wanted a Commodore 64 but considered its original price too high. The VIC-20 had color, sound, and an actual keyboard, and its peripherals offered a path toward the C64 later. When the Commodore 64 fell below $200 after the 1983 market shakeout, he bought one.

He stayed with the C64 until 1990, then moved into PC compatibles.

Instead of throwing the older machines away, he kept them.

That decision eventually became the website.

The museum only displays things he actually owns

The site’s most useful rule is also its limitation: Byrnes says he only documents computers that are physically part of his collection.

That means the museum is not trying to be a complete encyclopedia of every machine ever made. It is a photographic record of actual hardware accumulated through purchases, flea markets, thrift stores, and years of collecting.

The main museum page divides the collection into wings for computers, peripherals, manuals, magazines, software, books, and old advertisements. The photographs were taken largely in Byrnes’ workshop, and the history page notes that only a small portion of the collection could be displayed at once because of space limitations.

This is exactly the kind of enthusiast archive the early Web was unusually good at producing.

A commercial museum needs floor space, staffing, exhibits, insurance, and visitors. A personal web museum needs someone stubborn enough to photograph the boxes in the basement and type down what they know before the labels disappear.

The site’s last listed update is from 2014, but its value has increased as the hardware has aged. A VIC-20, obscure peripheral, old manual, or unusual clone is easier to identify when somebody photographed a real example while the markings were still readable.

Ancient Web: Odyssey – The Legend of Nemesis Left Its Classic Mac Site Standing

Some old game websites survive because nobody remembered to delete them. The Odyssey – The Legend of Nemesis site survived because its creator explicitly decided the obsolete parts were worth keeping.

The page offers the complete Macintosh RPG as a free StuffIt archive, along with a full walkthrough and bonus documents covering the game’s development and back story. The compatibility notes belong to a very specific Macintosh era: System 7, System 9, and OS X through Classic mode.

The more interesting link is the one leading backward.

The freeware page points visitors to the original commercial Odyssey website and warns that much of it is out of date. You cannot order the game from MacSoft anymore. The T-shirts are gone. Old purchasing information is useless.

The author leaves it standing anyway, specifically describing it as a piece of Macintosh gaming history.

That is exactly the right instinct.

The obsolete information is part of the artifact

A cleaned-up modern archive would probably remove dead ordering pages, ancient system requirements, old promotional material, and anything else that no longer serves a customer.

But those are the parts that explain what the game looked like when it was still a product.

The old site preserves the commercial shell around the software: how it was presented, what players were told, what merchandise existed, what sort of Mac was expected to run it, and how a small game developer used the Web before centralized storefronts absorbed most of that work.

The freeware page also reflects a second stage in the life of old software. Instead of disappearing when the commercial window closed, Odyssey was released in full and explicitly allowed to circulate.

That matters for preservation.

A surprising amount of 1990s software survives only as screenshots, descriptions, incomplete demo versions, or disk images detached from the documentation that made them understandable. Here, the game, walkthrough, development notes, and old promotional site remain connected.

The format itself is historical now. StuffIt archives, Classic mode, manually maintained game pages, and downloadable walkthrough documents all belong to a Macintosh ecosystem that has mostly vanished from normal use.

The page does not pretend otherwise.

Ancient Web: Apple2.org Keeps the Apple II in Pictures

Apple2.org contains more than five hundred images of Apple II hardware, which is enough to move past nostalgia and into the much more useful territory of being able to identify the strange card somebody found in a box.

The site is maintained by Tony Diaz, with copyright notices reaching back to 1996. Its focus is the Apple II family and the enormous ecosystem of hardware that accumulated around it: systems, motherboards, interface cards, accelerators, storage devices, modems, peripherals, and products that are obscure enough to require documentation precisely because nobody expects to see them anymore.

The site’s Original Apple ][ Picture Archive is the obvious centerpiece.

It includes standard Apple hardware alongside unusual third-party equipment and items that never became common commercial products. Some entries document variations between revisions. Others exist because a particular expansion card or accessory would otherwise be difficult to identify from a model number and one surviving photograph.

That kind of catalog becomes more useful as the machines get older.

The computer was only the beginning

The Apple II lasted long enough to accumulate a huge peripheral culture.

Owners expanded memory, changed display hardware, added serial and parallel interfaces, connected printers and modems, installed accelerator cards, attached different disk systems, and kept finding new jobs for machines whose architecture was designed in the 1970s.

A clean history of the Apple II can tell you when major models appeared.

A hardware archive can show you the board sitting on your desk.

Apple2.org also preserves technical documentation and older FAQs dealing with Apple II file formats, disk transfer, DOS and ProDOS, archive formats such as ShrinkIt, and the practical problem of moving data between vintage Apple hardware and newer computers.

That is where retrocomputing references earn their keep. Historical appreciation is nice. Getting the file off the disk is nicer.

The site’s own language celebrates the Apple II aggressively and describes it as the first personal computer. That is its framing; computing historians can argue definitions and predecessors forever. The more durable contribution is less debatable: Diaz documented a large amount of Apple II hardware and technical material while much of it was still physically available to photograph and identify.

Those images now function as a reference collection for collectors, repairers, emulator users, archivists, and anybody trying to understand what a surviving piece of hardware actually is.

Ancient Web: The Heaven’s Gate Site Is Still Online

The Heaven’s Gate website is still online, looking much like a page from the 1990s and preserving material connected to one of the darkest events associated with the early public Web.

Heaven’s Gate was a religious group led by Marshall Applewhite and Bonnie Nettles. Its members held a set of apocalyptic beliefs involving extraterrestrial life, bodily transformation, and what they described as advancement to a “Next Level.” Those claims were the group’s beliefs, not established facts.

In March 1997, 39 members of the group died in a mass suicide in Rancho Santa Fe, California.

The website became inseparable from the story.

It still contains the group’s writings, transcripts, a book, statements concerning the Hale-Bopp comet, an “Exit Press Release,” and other material published in the language the group used to explain itself.

That makes the site a primary source, but not a neutral one.

The Web was part of the group’s public presence

Heaven’s Gate did not merely happen to have a homepage.

Members used the Internet actively. The group posted messages to Usenet and operated a web-design business called Higher Source. Contemporary reporting from 1997 discussed both the business and the group’s online activity, while the Heaven’s Gate site drew enormous traffic after the deaths became international news.

That matters because the site documents an early moment when a small fringe group could use the Web to publish directly to a global audience without depending on newspapers, television, or a conventional publisher.

The same property that made the early Web powerful for personal publishing also made it available to movements promoting extreme and destructive beliefs.

The page therefore deserves a different kind of attention than a surviving fan site or hobby archive.

Its value is evidentiary.

Researchers can see how the group described itself, what terminology it used, which materials it chose to publish, and how a 1990s organization used websites and network communication as part of its public identity. Those sources can then be compared against contemporary reporting, scholarship, and other independent records rather than treated as authoritative on their own.

The site’s continued survival also raises a basic preservation question. Keeping disturbing primary material accessible is not the same thing as endorsing it. Removing every uncomfortable artifact would make serious study of Internet history much harder.

Ancient Web: Staggering Beauty Is One Worm and One Bad Idea

Staggering Beauty is a website about discovering how quickly a harmless black worm can become a terrible decision.

Photosensitivity warning: rapid mouse movement triggers intense flashing colors and loud audio. If flashing imagery is unsafe or unpleasant for you, there is nothing you need to prove to this worm.

The site was created by George Michael Brower and appeared in 2012. Google’s Chrome Experiments archive credits Brower for the project, Jon Baken for audio, and Paper.js as the graphics framework behind it.

The page itself barely explains anything.

A black, vaguely worm-shaped figure sits against a white background and bends toward the cursor. Move slowly and it sways around. Move the pointer aggressively enough and the page suddenly erupts into flashing colors while the creature thrashes to loud music.

Then it stops.

That is essentially the website.

A complete idea with almost no interface

Staggering Beauty is useful Internet history because it demonstrates a kind of small interactive web object that does not need an account, tutorial, navigation system, content feed, or even much text.

You arrive. You poke the thing. The thing responds.

The title gives no useful instructions, which is part of the mechanism. Discovery happens through interaction. The visitor learns the page by messing with it, and the surprising state change is the entire payoff.

This kind of project was especially at home in the period when browser graphics and JavaScript had become capable enough for smooth interactive experiments but the Web had not yet consolidated every playful idea into a social platform, mobile app, or ad-supported game.

The Chrome Experiments ecosystem encouraged exactly this sort of thing: show what the browser can do by making something unnecessary and memorable.

Staggering Beauty also aged unusually well because there is almost nothing to age. No login API has to survive. No database of user accounts needs maintenance. No complicated interface depends on a dead framework. The site asks for a pointer and enough browser support to move a shape around.

The accessibility issue is real, though. What read as an abrupt visual joke in 2012 includes intense flashing that can be unsafe for photosensitive visitors. A surviving web artifact can be worth documenting without pretending every design choice should be repeated.

Ancient Web: Science Hobbyist Has Been Online Since 1994

Bill Beaty’s Science Hobbyist site has been on the Web since September 1994 and still feels like somebody’s workbench expanded until it became a directory tree.

The larger AMASCI site is a sprawling personal collection of electronics, physics demonstrations, high-voltage projects, science misconceptions, traffic-wave experiments, unusual phenomena, essays, and links gathered by Beaty over decades.

The we-nerds.html page is one small branch of it: a hand-built resource index aimed at nerds, outsiders, and people who did not feel especially well served by ordinary social categories.

That page is a useful reminder of what personal websites used to do before every need became a platform category.

Somebody found resources they thought might help a particular kind of person, wrote short descriptions, and linked them together.

No recommendation engine was required.

The same person can build a high-voltage page and a support index

Science Hobbyist is interesting because it refuses modern topical discipline.

Beaty writes about electrical phenomena, science education, circuits, strange observations, skepticism, amateur experiments, and material he considers unconventional or controversial. Elsewhere he collects resources about social isolation and being an outsider. The site follows the interests of the person maintaining it instead of the content strategy of a publication.

That does not mean every claim or every external link should be accepted uncritically. In fact, one of Beaty’s own essays on unconventional research argues for beginning with the assumption that you may be mistaken and trying to destroy your own favorite explanation before somebody else does.

That is a useful rule for any site wandering near fringe science.

The physical construction of the website also tells its age. It is a network of pages accumulated over time rather than a single modern content feed. Some areas are instructional. Some are essays. Some are link collections. Some feel like notes that grew too large to remain notes.

The result is messy in the productive sense.

A researcher can follow the author’s thinking across subjects instead of receiving a cleanly separated stack of articles with identical templates.

Ancient Web: The Distorted Barbie Turned HTML Into Web Art

Mark Napier got an Internet account in 1995, put some paintings online, and then noticed the more interesting possibility: the browser itself could be the medium.

The Distorted Barbie came out of Napier’s early experiments with HTML in 1995 and 1996. Rather than treating a website as a neutral gallery wall, he began using links, repeated images, fragmented navigation, browser behavior, and manipulated graphics as parts of the artwork.

Barbie became raw material.

The surviving project moves through altered doll imagery, text, linked subpages, a “Facts of Barbie” section, and a “Barbie Closet” containing messages from visitors. It feels less like looking at a single finished image than wandering through a small handmade system.

That distinction matters because Web art was still new enough that artists were actively discovering what counted as material.

HTML counted.

So did the Back button.

Then the trademark lawyers arrived

The project also became part of an early fight over art, trademarks, and the Web.

Mattel objected to Napier’s use of Barbie imagery and sent legal demands in 1997. Contemporary coverage and later cyberlaw discussions treated the dispute as one example of the collision between trademark enforcement and artistic reuse online.

Napier did not invent Barbie or claim ownership of the character. His work distorted and recombined the commercial icon as commentary and art. The legal pressure therefore became part of the project’s history whether anybody wanted it there or not.

That makes the surviving pages useful for more than aesthetics.

They capture a period when artists, companies, lawyers, and courts were still working out what familiar offline concepts meant once anybody could publish globally from a personal account. A manipulated brand image was no longer hanging in one gallery. It could be copied, linked, discussed, challenged, and revisited from anywhere.

The site also preserves Napier’s own transition into the medium. He has described realizing that simply displaying paintings online missed what was different about the Web. Projects such as The Distorted Barbie came from experimenting with the network and the browser rather than merely using them to distribute photographs of other work.

Ancient Web: April Fools on the Net Saved the Jokes Before Social Media

Before brands spent April 1 producing fake product announcements through five social platforms at once, people were already using the Internet to lie recreationally.

2meta’s archive collects April Fools material from the older Internet, with yearly pages reaching back into the 1990s. The host site itself describes being online since 1996, and the prank archive preserves examples from an era when the joke might arrive through a website, mailing list, Usenet post, fake advisory, or deliberately ridiculous technical document.

The 1994 collection includes a fake Microsoft bid to acquire the Catholic Church, a NASA Congressional Budget Explorer, an “Internet in a Lunchbox” item, a joke about Cisco acquiring Sears, and several deliberately absurd RFCs.

By 1996, the archive includes a fake CERT security advisory warning about an “Alien/OS vulnerability,” complete with a Windows 95 angle.

Some jokes aged well.

Some require enough historical context that the explanation is now funnier than the prank.

The joke used to have a location

What makes the collection useful is not merely the comedy. It preserves where Internet humor lived before the modern feed flattened everything into screenshots and reposts.

A fake security bulletin worked because readers were accustomed to receiving real security bulletins in similar forms. A joke RFC worked because technical people recognized the dead-serious formatting. A bogus corporate acquisition could circulate because the Web was becoming fast enough for an invented announcement to escape its original page before everybody had instant access to verification.

The medium was part of the prank.

The archive also catches references that would otherwise disappear when old homepages, university accounts, and small organizations went offline. A list of old joke links is imperfect preservation—some destinations are inevitably dead—but even the titles, dates, and descriptions preserve the shape of what people were doing.

Modern April Fools material is often intentionally disposable. It appears in a feed, gets screenshotted, creates one day of confusion, and is buried by April 2.

An old-fashioned yearly index is less glamorous and considerably easier to research twenty years later.
