The site explains a group of marine animals that are colonial in the literal biological sense. A siphonophore begins from a single embryo, then produces many genetically identical bodies that remain physically integrated. Those bodies specialize: some catch prey, some swim, some reproduce, and others handle different parts of keeping the colony alive.

Remote-operated vehicles changed that. Researchers could finally watch intact colonies drifting, swimming, extending tentacles, and hunting hundreds of meters down.

The weirdness is not decorative. It is functional anatomy operating at a scale and organization that does not map neatly onto our usual idea of an individual animal.
