Jon Ridgeon’s tutorial index covers a ridiculous range of practical projects: willow baskets, bow-drill fire making, elder whistles, carved kuksa cups, birch-bark containers, natural cordage, fishing hooks, fish traps, berry pickers, wooden skis, canoes, combs, mortars, stoves, and more.

The articles are not optimized around a five-minute video or buried beneath a membership wall. They are generally sequences of photographs and explanatory text showing what material was used, what the next cut or bend should accomplish, and what went wrong when something did not behave.

That format ages well.

A personal site became a skills library

The gallery is especially good because it shows how the individual tutorials connect. Bark containers sit beside hand-carved utensils, ash longbows, lime-bark nets, steam-bent skis, snowshoes, fishing spears, a shave horse, and skin-on-frame canoes. You can see the same small set of tools and natural materials turning into very different objects.

Ridgeon’s older blog posts also preserve the personal side of the site. He wrote about moving from the UK to Norway, working toward a more self-sufficient life, publishing books on willow craft and basketry, and learning through repeated projects rather than presenting himself as an all-purpose wilderness authority.

One page about an ammo-can stove even includes the useful sentence modern instructional sites often avoid: this was his first stove, and he was not claiming the design was necessarily the best one.

That kind of caveat is worth keeping.

Ancient Web: Butkus Camera Manual Library Keeps Orphan Cameras Usable

A forty-year-old camera can be perfectly functional and still become useless because nobody remembers what one unlabeled lever does. Mike Butkus has spent decades attacking exactly that problem.

The site identifies itself as a camera manual library running from 1997 through the present, with more than 5,600 instruction and user manuals. It covers familiar names such as Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Kodak, Olympus, Minolta, Leica, Rolleiflex and Polaroid, but the real preservation value is in the less fashionable equipment: Chinon, Miranda, Petri, Praktica, old flashes, light meters, movie cameras, accessories, obscure house brands, and what the site calls “orphan cameras.”

This is not a tiny abandoned archive either. The homepage says more than 100 manuals were added in 2025 and describes tens of thousands of files across its sites.

The scanning never really ended

The workflow is beautifully direct. Butkus acquires manuals, scans them, hosts the PDFs, and asks for small donations to help pay for manuals and hosting. The site explicitly refuses advertising.

It also keeps lists of manuals that physically exist in the collection but have not yet been scanned. If someone needs one, the site says it may be possible to locate the paper copy and scan it.

That is digital preservation in its least glamorous and most useful form.

A manual for a current product is support documentation. A manual for a discontinued camera from a company that no longer supports it becomes part of the machine itself. Lose the documentation and some percentage of the hardware’s usefulness goes with it.

An old-web answer to a modern problem

Search for old manuals now and you will often meet SEO pages, fake download buttons, registration walls, scraped copies, or sites trying to sell the same PDF that somebody else scanned. Butkus even warns visitors about fake manual sites.

The original library is refreshingly boring: find the manufacturer, find the model, open the manual.

For a webmaster, there is a lesson in that. Thousands of narrow pages can become extraordinarily valuable when they map cleanly to real objects people continue to search for.

Ancient Web: The HP 9845C Demo Preserves Early Color Computer Graphics

There is a surviving software demo for the HP 9845C that needed two tapes, more than 4,000 lines of BASIC, a light pen, and enough graphics tricks to make a 1980 computer look like it was trying to escape the decade.

HP9845.net documents the package in unusually good detail. The demo contains 36 cases spread across color graphics, engineering, scientific work, management graphics, and advanced graphics. The machine could display up to 4,913 colors, and the software demonstrates wireframes, shaded 3D surfaces, ordered dithering, data visualization, interactive light-pen control, mapping, architecture, stress analysis, astronomy, and even a small gravity game.

The name attached to the demo makes the page even stranger: Colin Cantwell.

Cantwell worked on spacecraft designs for Star Wars, including early concepts connected with the X-wing, TIE fighter and Star Destroyer. The HP archive says he also consulted on the 9845C color system and later programmed the tactical NORAD screens seen in WarGames using an HP 9845C.

The software survived by inches

Magnetic media does not care that something is historically interesting.

The archive explains that surviving demo tapes commonly suffer from deterioration, and multiple versions of the software made reconstruction difficult. A complete set of files eventually turned up on a backup disk held by another HP collector, allowing the full demo to run again.

That one paragraph contains most of digital preservation: old media fails, incomplete copies multiply, somebody kept a backup, and suddenly the thing is recoverable.

The page does more than describe it. There is a large screenshot gallery, the complete demo disk image, the original demo guide, video footage, and instructions for running the software through an HP 9845C emulator based on MAME.

A technical page that earns its URL

This is the kind of old-web material search engines are good at only after somebody has done the hard part. The page ties together a specific computer, part numbers, software, a designer, screenshots, damaged media, downloadable artifacts, and enough context to explain why any of it matters.

Webmasters building historical resources should notice the pattern: preserve the files, but preserve the explanation around the files too.

Mulsanne’s Corner opens with the line “Answering the questions that no one else is asking,” then backs it up with enough race-car engineering material to make a casual Le Mans fan regret clicking during lunch.

Michael J. Fuller’s site says it was created on August 1, 1998. The layout still recommends an 800Ă—600 screen resolution. The contents, meanwhile, range across decades of prototype racing: Audi R8 and R10, Bentley Speed 8, Toyota GT-One, Porsche 962, Jaguar XJR-14, Nissan prototypes, Panoz, Courage, Lola, Cadillac, Peugeot and plenty of cars that require a fairly committed motorsport brain to recognize.

The car pages are only part of it.

There are engine sections, interviews with drivers and engineers, historical pieces, technical regulations, scale-modeling references, Le Mans trap-speed data, and a race-car aerodynamics database.

Numbers instead of adjectives

Motorsport writing can turn into a fog of “aggressive aero” and “advanced design” very quickly. Mulsanne’s Corner is useful because it often gets specific.

The archive includes downforce and drag figures, aero balance, chassis regulations by year, technical drawings, development history, and explanations of concepts such as diffusers and wing endplates. One long-running feature asks why the Mercedes-Benz CLR became airborne at Le Mans in 1999.

The site also preserves rulesets that would otherwise be annoying to reconstruct. Its chassis-rule index stretches through years of ACO, FIA and IMSA regulations. For somebody researching why a particular prototype looks the way it does, that context matters.

And somehow this is not merely a fossil. The homepage shows updates in 2026.

What a specialist site can become

This is one of the best arguments for letting a personal website become absurdly specific.

No general automotive publication is likely to maintain a quarter-century cross-reference between obscure prototype chassis, historic rules, aerodynamic data, interviews and engineering notes. A focused independent site can.

That specificity is also SEO without the embarrassing part. Search for a particular chassis designation or technical question and there is a good chance the useful page is already sitting here.

CPU-GALAXY is an online museum where every processor, board and strange ceramic chip pictured on the site comes from the owner’s actual collection. This is not a generated catalog. Peter has the stuff.

The site describes itself as a virtual museum of vintage and rare CPUs, chips, boards and related hardware. Exhibits combine high-resolution photographs with descriptions and datasheets, turning what could have been a photo gallery into a useful identification and research resource.

Peter’s “about” page explains the motivation plainly: save old chips, photograph them properly, share the collection, and pass on handling knowledge to newer collectors.

That last part matters more than it sounds.

Rare silicon is easy to destroy

Chip collecting has its own physical problems. Pins bend. Packages get dirty. Collectors want to expose dies. Old boards get scrapped. Parts that look like worthless ceramic rectangles can be historically significant.

Peter writes that experienced collectors learned cleaning, pin straightening and die work through trial and error, sometimes killing rare devices in the process. The tutorials exist partly so somebody else does not have to repeat all of those mistakes.

His best collecting story is pure CacheRat material: an early Intel 8008 processor board found in the garbage.

The timeline stretches from early microscopes through nineteenth-century instruments and into twentieth-century equipment. There are also related tools such as lamps, microtomes, ringing tables, telescopes, scales and other optical or laboratory instruments.

The collection is only half the website.

Its research sections pull together historical makers, book references, trade catalogs, serial numbers, excerpts from the Journal of the Royal Microscopical Society, and an image database built from figures appearing in old sources.

That is especially useful when an instrument arrives without a neat modern label telling you exactly what it is.

Replicas, monkey microscopes and actual research

The collection includes replicas of microscope forms associated with Antoni van Leeuwenhoek, whose simple instruments helped open the microscopic world to observation.

The browser wars have been compressed into clean timelines now. Nathan Lineback’s Internet Explorer Is Evil preserves something those timelines usually remove: how pissed off people actually were.

The site describes itself as a record of the humor and controversy around Microsoft’s introduction and promotion of Internet Explorer. It grew out of the era when IE was being tightly integrated with Windows, Netscape was collapsing, ActiveX was a security argument at every technical lunch table, and browser choice was tangled up with operating-system power.

The historical value is not neutrality. The historical value is precisely that this is not neutral.

The web had buttons for hatred

There is an entire page of anti-IE buttons and banners.

Internet Exploder. Burn IE. Nuke Internet Explorer. Microsoft Internet Assimilator. A spinning pentagram. A Borg cube. A tombstone. A fake blue-screen joke.

Another page preserves parody WAV files, old MIDI files and a Windows screen saver that fills the display with burning Internet Explorer logos.

This is what political cartoons looked like when the political entity was a web browser.

The “Reasons not to use Internet Explorer” page mixes real technical complaints with deliberately stupid ones. System DLL replacement, ActiveX and operating-system integration sit next to claims that IE scares children, bites people’s heads off and costs exactly one soul per installed copy.

That mixture tells you more about late-1990s webmaster culture than a polished history ever could.

It kept going after the war

Lineback did not simply freeze the site when Firefox arrived. Later rants followed Microsoft through newer versions of IE, Edge, compatibility modes and the eventual retirement of the Internet Explorer application.

The broader ToastyTech site also contains the GUI Gallery, Windows utilities, old DOOM material and other preserved bits of personal-computing history.

For a webmaster in 2026, this is useful context. Browser compatibility arguments did not begin with Chromium, and platform owners trying to make their preferred browser unavoidable is not a new anxiety.

Owning an old Porsche is easier when one extremely determined person has already written down how to remove half of it. For generations of 924, 944 and 968 owners, that person was Clark Fletcher.

Clark described the site in a 2002 forum post as a collection of repair procedures, performance modifications, buying tips, tool and parts sources, repair facilities and a shop manual under construction. It had previously been called the Porsche 944 Garage before returning under the Clark’s Garage name.

The important part is what happened next: owners kept using it.

Search Porsche forums for almost any 944 repair and Clark’s Garage turns up as the thing somebody links before writing three paragraphs of their own advice.

A workshop manual written for people doing the work

The shop-manual index is broad: engine removal and installation, belts, cooling, electrical systems, fuel and vacuum routing, clutch work, suspension, brakes, HVAC, troubleshooting, torque information and model-specific procedures.

The writing earned a reputation for being unusually usable. Owners still describe it as the first place to check when a 944 refuses to start, leaks something expensive, or presents one of the many engineering decisions that make sense only after the third cup of coffee.

A factory manual tells you what the manufacturer needed technicians to know. Most integrated circuits are designed to be visually boring. Black package. Tiny markings. Pins. ZeptoBars removes the package and shows the microscopic city that was hiding inside.

One of the site’s defining early articles, published in 2012, explains the process of decapsulating packaged chips so the silicon die can be inspected and photographed. The original article is explicit that the laboratory chemicals involved are extremely dangerous and not something untrained readers should reproduce.

The useful result is the photography.

Under magnification, an anonymous regulator, logic chip or processor becomes bond wires, metal layers, repeated transistor structures, memory arrays, analog geometry, logos and tiny bits of layout humor left by engineers.

A continuing archive of actual silicon

ZeptoBars did not stop at a handful of novelty photographs.

The archive runs for dozens of pages and continues receiving new die shots in 2026. Recent entries identify exact parts, manufacturers and die dimensions. Ancient Web: Computer Gaming World Museum Preserved an Industry

Computer game history gets flattened quickly when it is retold from memory. The Computer Gaming World Museum has a better method: keep the magazines and let the people who were there speak for themselves.

The museum is devoted to Computer Gaming World, the magazine that began publishing in November 1981 and ran until November 2006. Its archive contains scans of the entire run, but the first 100 issues are the heart of the project because they cover the period when home computer gaming went from a specialist hobby to a recognizable industry.

7,438 pages, scanned and searchable

The first major archive project took more than two years. According to the museum, 7,438 pages from the first 100 issues of Computer Gaming World and two issues of Computer Game Forum were scanned and OCRed. That work produced a searchable index containing more than three million words.

This is where the site stops being merely a magazine collection and becomes research infrastructure.

You can look up a game and see how it was reviewed when it was new. You can follow companies before anybody knew which ones would survive. Advertisements show what hardware and software publishers thought would sell. Columns and letters preserve arguments that would otherwise exist only in somebody’s fading memory.

Later, issues 101 through 268 were scanned as well, bringing the complete magazine run into digital form. The museum says its focus remains the early years because they capture an industry while its vocabulary, business models and expectations were still being invented.

A primary source instead of a retrospective

For webmasters and researchers, the useful lesson is straightforward: preservation is more valuable when the original context survives with the artifact. A screenshot of an old game tells you what it looked like. A contemporary magazine tells you what it cost, how it was marketed, what machines ran it, what reviewers thought mattered and what competing products shared the page.
