R. Donald Ross started collecting railroad photographs in 1946. More than fifty years later he got a scanner, discovered the web, and turned the hobby into Don’s Depot.

Ross explains the transition himself. He had been exchanging and collecting railroad photographs for decades through railfan networks. In 1998, after buying a scanner, he began emailing scanned pictures to other enthusiasts. Tom Chandler suggested that putting them on web pages would be easier than burying everybody’s inbox.

The pages kept growing.

The result is the kind of collection that makes the old web valuable: thousands of photographs arranged largely by railroad company, with contributions from other collectors and an open invitation for visitors to send corrections and additional information.

A hobby older than the website by half a century

That timeline matters.

This was not a website created because “railroad content” looked like a promising niche. The website is merely the latest container for a project that began when Harry Truman was president.

The archive includes locomotives and rolling stock, but it also branches into regional railroads, private passenger cars, private freight cars, ships, boats, tugs, fire engines, and buses. Older pages show their age. Navigation is utilitarian. Thumbnail images open larger scans. The purpose is straightforward: identify the equipment and share the pictures.

There is a wonderful early-web sentence on the home page explaining that the original categories were replaced by railroad-company listings because some railroads “defy classification.” That is what real collections do. The material eventually breaks your first filing system.

A normal discography tells you an album came out. The Pink Floyd Archives tells you which pressing plant made the disc, what is printed around the label edge, which booklet came in the box, what the matrix says, and whether somebody changed the track order on the cassette.

Music historian and collector Vernon Fitch began the archive in the mid-1970s as a centralized collection of Pink Floyd material. The website opened in February 1996, which means the web presence itself is now part of the history it documents.

The collection covers records, singles, CDs, cassettes, videos, posters, tour programs, backstage passes, promotional material, books, magazines, photographs, autographs, radio releases, and more.

The detail becomes the point

The strongest sections are the discographies.

Different countries, formats, labels, pressings, box sets, promotional issues, military releases, and radio-only material are separated and documented individually. Entries can include catalog numbers, barcodes, release dates, pressing plants, matrix information, packaging descriptions, inserts, mastering details, and track peak levels.

This is collector knowledge made searchable.

It also solves a real research problem. Once an artist has been releasing music internationally for decades, “the CD version” is not one object. There may be dozens of physically different editions whose distinctions matter to collectors, archivists, mastering researchers, and people trying to identify what they actually own.

The site’s book database and concert material push beyond records into a broader reference library. Fitch has also published books built from the research, including encyclopedic and period-specific work on the band.

For a webmaster, the lesson is not “write more Pink Floyd pages.” It is that exhaustive specificity has compounding value. Every obscure matrix number or regional pressing gives another researcher a reason to land on the archive.

Ancient Web: Theodore Gray Turned the Periodic Table Into a Collection of Real Objects

The periodic table usually appears as colored rectangles containing symbols and atomic numbers. Theodore Gray looked at that and apparently decided the missing feature was several thousand actual objects.

Periodictable.com is built around photographs of real element samples and things made from or associated with those elements. Click tungsten and you can find metal samples and manufactured objects. Click germanium and there are crystals, ore, diodes, supplements, and a boule. Zirconium leads to crucibles, flash bulbs, abrasives, and other objects.

Theodore Gray’s own collection alone is indexed at more than a thousand items.

Chemistry gets physical again

That matters because chemistry education can become abstract very quickly. “Palladium” is a box on a chart until you see it in a catalytic converter. “Phosphorus” is a symbol until the collection confronts you with actual industrial, mineral, historical, and sometimes unsettling uses.

The site also includes rotating 360-degree views for many specimens and more detailed descriptions than Gray could fit into his book The Elements. In fact, he describes the book as growing out of the photographs he had already been collecting on the website.

That is a particularly old-web path to publishing: build the weirdly specific website first, discover that the material has become a substantial reference, then turn part of it into a book.

The collection is useful to students, teachers, collectors, artists, and anyone who has stared at a periodic table and wondered what these substances look like when they are not printed in a textbook.

It is also a model for web publishing. A database becomes memorable when the records are attached to physical things, good photographs, and specific stories.

The Web Gallery of Art started in 1996, when putting a museum on the web still required explaining what a “virtual museum” was.

Created by Emil Krén and Daniel Marx, the site began with Renaissance art and expanded outward in both directions. Medieval roots were added. Then Mannerism, Baroque, Rococo, decorative arts, architecture, Early Christian work, Pre-Romanesque material, and eventually 19th-century art up to the beginning of World War I.

The collection now contains more than 52,000 reproductions.

Built for browsing before feeds took over

The Web Gallery of Art is not just a pile of JPEGs.

There is an artist index, searchable database, biographies, commentaries, guided tours, period music, catalogs, and a mobile interface that was added years after the original site. The scope is deliberately bounded: European fine arts, decorative arts, and architecture from roughly the 3rd through 19th centuries.

That boundary is useful. The site knows what collection it is trying to build.

Modern image search can produce millions of results for “Renaissance painting,” but quantity is not the same thing as a curated reference. Here, works sit inside an organized art-historical structure. An artist connects to a period, a work, a school, a medium, and related material.

Ancient Web: CoffeeResearch.org Built a 300-Page Coffee School

CoffeeResearch.org is what happens when somebody decides that “coffee website” should mean roughly the whole subject, not twelve affiliate links and a recipe for cold foam. The site says it was founded in 1999 and grew into about 300 pages of coffee education.

The scope is still impressive. It moves from coffee agriculture and harvesting into roasting, grinding, brewing, espresso, chemistry, decaffeination, trade, consumption statistics, organic coffee, fair trade, and sustainability. There are photo galleries, training material, old newsletters, and pages that try to explain the mechanics behind the drink instead of merely ranking machines.

The site’s own history says the material grew out of a year spent traveling and studying coffee with people in the industry. That helps explain why the information architecture feels more like a small reference library than a modern lifestyle site.

The useful part is the depth

A good example is the brewing section. It discusses water temperature, extraction time, grind, water quality, and different brewing methods in practical terms. Elsewhere the site walks backward through the chain and explains why the plant, harvest, processing method, roasting, and preparation all affect what ends up in the cup.

That connection is easy to lose on the modern web, where agriculture lives on one site, espresso technique on another, and chemistry gets compressed into a search-result snippet.

There is also a nice old-web trait here: the site is willing to admit limits. Its statistics page points readers toward industry organizations when it does not have the requested market data instead of pretending every question can be answered locally.

Ancient Web: Jon’s Bushcraft Teaches Skills Without a Content Platform

Jon’s Bushcraft looks like somebody had a skill, took photographs while doing it, and put the instructions directly on the web. That sounds obvious. In 2026 it is almost exotic.

Jon Ridgeon’s tutorial index covers a ridiculous range of practical projects: willow baskets, bow-drill fire making, elder whistles, carved kuksa cups, birch-bark containers, natural cordage, fishing hooks, fish traps, berry pickers, wooden skis, canoes, combs, mortars, stoves, and more.

The articles are not optimized around a five-minute video or buried beneath a membership wall. They are generally sequences of photographs and explanatory text showing what material was used, what the next cut or bend should accomplish, and what went wrong when something did not behave.

That format ages well.

A personal site became a skills library

The gallery is especially good because it shows how the individual tutorials connect. Bark containers sit beside hand-carved utensils, ash longbows, lime-bark nets, steam-bent skis, snowshoes, fishing spears, a shave horse, and skin-on-frame canoes. You can see the same small set of tools and natural materials turning into very different objects.

Ridgeon’s older blog posts also preserve the personal side of the site. He wrote about moving from the UK to Norway, working toward a more self-sufficient life, publishing books on willow craft and basketry, and learning through repeated projects rather than presenting himself as an all-purpose wilderness authority.

One page about an ammo-can stove even includes the useful sentence modern instructional sites often avoid: this was his first stove, and he was not claiming the design was necessarily the best one.

That kind of caveat is worth keeping.

Why webmasters should notice it

A site like this is strong because the URL is not the product. The information is. A person searching years later for how to process lime bark for cordage or carve a wooden comb can land on one page, get the answer, and keep digging.

There is no requirement that a useful website constantly reinvent itself.

Ancient Web: Butkus Camera Manual Library Keeps Orphan Cameras Usable

A forty-year-old camera can be perfectly functional and still become useless because nobody remembers what one unlabeled lever does. Mike Butkus has spent decades attacking exactly that problem.

The site identifies itself as a camera manual library running from 1997 through the present, with more than 5,600 instruction and user manuals. It covers familiar names such as Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Kodak, Olympus, Minolta, Leica, Rolleiflex and Polaroid, but the real preservation value is in the less fashionable equipment: Chinon, Miranda, Petri, Praktica, old flashes, light meters, movie cameras, accessories, obscure house brands, and what the site calls “orphan cameras.”

This is not a tiny abandoned archive either. The homepage says more than 100 manuals were added in 2025 and describes tens of thousands of files across its sites.

The scanning never really ended

The workflow is beautifully direct. Butkus acquires manuals, scans them, hosts the PDFs, and asks for small donations to help pay for manuals and hosting. The site explicitly refuses advertising.

It also keeps lists of manuals that physically exist in the collection but have not yet been scanned. If someone needs one, the site says it may be possible to locate the paper copy and scan it.

That is digital preservation in its least glamorous and most useful form.

A manual for a current product is support documentation. A manual for a discontinued camera from a company that no longer supports it becomes part of the machine itself. Lose the documentation and some percentage of the hardware’s usefulness goes with it.

An old-web answer to a modern problem

Search for old manuals now and you will often meet SEO pages, fake download buttons, registration walls, scraped copies, or sites trying to sell the same PDF that somebody else scanned. Butkus even warns visitors about fake manual sites.

The original library is refreshingly boring: find the manufacturer, find the model, open the manual.

For a webmaster, there is a lesson in that. Thousands of narrow pages can become extraordinarily valuable when they map cleanly to real objects people continue to search for.

Ancient Web: The HP 9845C Demo Preserves Early Color Computer Graphics

There is a surviving software demo for the HP 9845C that needed two tapes, more than 4,000 lines of BASIC, a light pen, and enough graphics tricks to make a 1980 computer look like it was trying to escape the decade.

HP9845.net documents the package in unusually good detail. The demo contains 36 cases spread across color graphics, engineering, scientific work, management graphics, and advanced graphics. The machine could display up to 4,913 colors, and the software demonstrates wireframes, shaded 3D surfaces, ordered dithering, data visualization, interactive light-pen control, mapping, architecture, stress analysis, astronomy, and even a small gravity game.

The name attached to the demo makes the page even stranger: Colin Cantwell.

Cantwell worked on spacecraft designs for Star Wars, including early concepts connected with the X-wing, TIE fighter and Star Destroyer. The HP archive says he also consulted on the 9845C color system and later programmed the tactical NORAD screens seen in WarGames using an HP 9845C.

The software survived by inches

Magnetic media does not care that something is historically interesting.

The archive explains that surviving demo tapes commonly suffer from deterioration, and multiple versions of the software made reconstruction difficult. A complete set of files eventually turned up on a backup disk held by another HP collector, allowing the full demo to run again.

That one paragraph contains most of digital preservation: old media fails, incomplete copies multiply, somebody kept a backup, and suddenly the thing is recoverable.

The page does more than describe it. There is a large screenshot gallery, the complete demo disk image, the original demo guide, video footage, and instructions for running the software through an HP 9845C emulator based on MAME.

A technical page that earns its URL

This is the kind of old-web material search engines are good at only after somebody has done the hard part. The page ties together a specific computer, part numbers, software, a designer, screenshots, damaged media, downloadable artifacts, and enough context to explain why any of it matters.

Webmasters building historical resources should notice the pattern: preserve the files, but preserve the explanation around the files too.

Mulsanne’s Corner opens with the line “Answering the questions that no one else is asking,” then backs it up with enough race-car engineering material to make a casual Le Mans fan regret clicking during lunch.

Michael J. Fuller’s site says it was created on August 1, 1998. The layout still recommends an 800Ă—600 screen resolution. The contents, meanwhile, range across decades of prototype racing: Audi R8 and R10, Bentley Speed 8, Toyota GT-One, Porsche 962, Jaguar XJR-14, Nissan prototypes, Panoz, Courage, Lola, Cadillac, Peugeot and plenty of cars that require a fairly committed motorsport brain to recognize.

The car pages are only part of it.

There are engine sections, interviews with drivers and engineers, historical pieces, technical regulations, scale-modeling references, Le Mans trap-speed data, and a race-car aerodynamics database.

Numbers instead of adjectives

Motorsport writing can turn into a fog of “aggressive aero” and “advanced design” very quickly. Mulsanne’s Corner is useful because it often gets specific.

The archive includes downforce and drag figures, aero balance, chassis regulations by year, technical drawings, development history, and explanations of concepts such as diffusers and wing endplates. One long-running feature asks why the Mercedes-Benz CLR became airborne at Le Mans in 1999.

The site also preserves rulesets that would otherwise be annoying to reconstruct. Its chassis-rule index stretches through years of ACO, FIA and IMSA regulations. For somebody researching why a particular prototype looks the way it does, that context matters.

And somehow this is not merely a fossil. The homepage shows updates in 2026.

What a specialist site can become

This is one of the best arguments for letting a personal website become absurdly specific.

No general automotive publication is likely to maintain a quarter-century cross-reference between obscure prototype chassis, historic rules, aerodynamic data, interviews and engineering notes. A focused independent site can.

That specificity is also SEO without the embarrassing part. Search for a particular chassis designation or technical question and there is a good chance the useful page is already sitting here.

Ancient Web: CPU-GALAXY Is a Private Museum of Rare Chips

CPU-GALAXY is an online museum where every processor, board and strange ceramic chip pictured on the site comes from the owner’s actual collection. This is not a generated catalog. Peter has the stuff.

The site describes itself as a virtual museum of vintage and rare CPUs, chips, boards and related hardware. Exhibits combine high-resolution photographs with descriptions and datasheets, turning what could have been a photo gallery into a useful identification and research resource.

Peter’s “about” page explains the motivation plainly: save old chips, photograph them properly, share the collection, and pass on handling knowledge to newer collectors.

That last part matters more than it sounds.

Rare silicon is easy to destroy

Chip collecting has its own physical problems. Pins bend. Packages get dirty. Collectors want to expose dies. Old boards get scrapped. Parts that look like worthless ceramic rectangles can be historically significant.

Peter writes that experienced collectors learned cleaning, pin straightening and die work through trial and error, sometimes killing rare devices in the process. The tutorials exist partly so somebody else does not have to repeat all of those mistakes.

His best collecting story is pure CacheRat material: an early Intel 8008 processor board found in the garbage.

The site treats old electronics as artifacts rather than generic e-waste. An Intel 4004, 8008, early EPROM, DEC processor or IBM module is not valuable only because collectors will pay for it. It is evidence of how computing was physically built.

A museum without waiting for a building

Private collections disappear easily. Hardware gets sold in lots, estates get cleared, labels separate from objects, and a carefully accumulated collection becomes fifty unrelated auction listings.

Photographing and documenting the collection creates a second layer of preservation. Even if ownership changes later, there is still a searchable record connecting part numbers, package styles, boards and datasheets.

For webmasters, CPU-GALAXY is another good example of a site whose SEO comes almost accidentally from exactness. Processor numbers and obscure chip markings are precisely the things researchers type into search boxes.
