The site is built around Federico Faggin’s account of the project. Faggin joined Intel from Fairchild in April 1970 and led the implementation of the MCS-4 chip set for Busicom. His pages separate the earlier architectural proposal by Ted Hoff and Stan Mazor from the later design and development work that turned the idea into working silicon.

That distinction is the point of the site. It is not a neutral museum label. It is a technical participant arguing the historical record.

The manufacturing story matters

A large part of the material deals with silicon-gate technology, self-aligned gates, buried contacts, chip layout, and the practical problem of putting roughly 2,300 transistors into one commercially manufacturable processor in 1971.

That makes the site unusually useful. Plenty of histories say the 4004 “changed computing.” Fewer explain why the available MOS process technology was such a constraint or why Faggin’s background at Fairchild mattered to getting the design onto a chip.

One of the site’s defining early articles, published in 2012, explains the process of decapsulating packaged chips so the silicon die can be inspected and photographed. The original article is explicit that the laboratory chemicals involved are extremely dangerous and not something untrained readers should reproduce.

The useful result is the photography.

Under magnification, an anonymous regulator, logic chip or processor becomes bond wires, metal layers, repeated transistor structures, memory arrays, analog geometry, logos and tiny bits of layout humor left by engineers.

A continuing archive of actual silicon

ZeptoBars did not stop at a handful of novelty photographs.

The archive runs for dozens of pages and continues receiving new die shots in 2026. Recent entries identify exact parts, manufacturers and die dimensions. The project has also moved into scanning electron microscopy; a 2026 post documents the acquisition of a dual-beam FEI Versa 3D system capable of extremely high-resolution imaging.

That gives the archive several audiences at once.

Electronics people can compare internal construction. Semiconductor historians can see how different manufacturers solved similar problems. Counterfeit hunters can compare suspicious parts with known dies. Designers working with open silicon can compare physical manufacturing results against layout data.

And the rest of us can stare at a logic chip until it starts looking like a city photographed from orbit.

Yes, the website is really called Britney Spears’ Guide to Semiconductor Physics. No, Britney Spears did not secretly abandon pop music to explain quantum wells. The actual story is better Internet.

The site was written and designed by Carl Hepburn while he was a postgraduate student at the University of Essex. Hepburn explains that he started the pages while studying for his dissertation because he wanted to consolidate what he was learning about semiconductor physics while also learning HTML.

Then he added Britney Spears so people would remember the website.

It worked.

Under the joke is an actual physics tutorial

The navigation covers semiconductor basics, crystal structures, junctions, finite-barrier quantum wells, radiative recombination, carrier transport, density of states, edge-emitting lasers, vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers, photonic crystals, fabrication and photolithography. There is even a semiconductor-term “lip-glossary.”

The tone may be absurd, but the subject matter is not random filler. Hepburn had a theoretical-physics degree and an experimental-physics master’s degree and was working on a PhD involving GaInNAs vertical-cavity semiconductor optical amplifiers. His master’s dissertation on the temperature dependence of long-wavelength VCSELs was linked from the site.

This is an excellent old-Web trick: hide serious information inside something weird enough that people voluntarily tell their friends about it.

SEO before everybody called it SEO

Modern marketing departments spend enormous amounts of time trying to manufacture memorable hooks. A physics student put a global pop star next to semiconductor equations and accidentally solved the problem twenty years ago.

For webmasters, the lesson is not “put celebrities on everything.” The lesson is that useful information benefits from a recognizable frame. The strange part got people through the door; the real technical content gave the page a reason to survive after the joke should have expired.
