Pinball News built an enormous archive of show reports covering pinball expos, tournaments, arcade events, launch parties, collector gatherings, industry exhibitions, seminars, and regional competitions around the world.

The index stretches across years of events in the United States, Britain, mainland Europe, and elsewhere.

It is less like a calendar than a social history of the hobby.

Events disappear faster than machines

A pinball table can survive for fifty years.

A convention weekend disappears on Sunday night.

Show reports preserve the temporary layer: which new machines debuted, which prototypes appeared, what manufacturers announced, how tournaments were organized, which collectors brought games, and what the room actually looked like.

The archive includes reports from events such as Pinball Expo, the Texas Pinball Festival, Dutch Pinball Open, Pacific Pinball Exposition, UK Pinball Show, European Pinball Championship, Northwest Pinball & Arcade Show, Pinburgh, and many smaller gatherings.

Some reports include seminar coverage or factory visits that capture information not easily reconstructed from a machine database.

That makes old event reporting unusually valuable once the industry changes.

Companies close. Designers move. Games become collectible. Tournament formats evolve. A photograph of a booth that seemed routine in 2007 can become evidence of what existed, who was involved, or when a particular idea first appeared publicly.

Ancient Web: Badger.org Survived the Dot-Com Crash and Became an Actual Badger Site

Badger.org has one of the better domain-name redemption arcs on the old web.

The domain originally belonged to Badger.Org, Inc., a web business started in 1999. The company closed in 2001 after the dot-com collapse dried up its customer base. The owner later repurposed the domain around the animal because, as the site explains, that finally made the .org name fit.

So now Badger.org is about badgers.

American badgers, Eurasian badgers, honey badgers, hog badgers, ferret badgers, stink badgers, distribution maps, species notes, conservation, myths, links, and other material accumulated by somebody whose nickname happens to be Badger.

A website that kept its previous life attached

The interesting part is that the old site was not completely erased.

Badger.org still links sections from its earlier incarnation, including public-domain texts, Shakespeare, Bible pages, Poser models, and a GIF gallery. The owner explicitly says he is not rewriting some of that code, so it may behave strangely in modern browsers.

That is a rare little piece of web archaeology preserved by the same person who created it.

The badger material itself is equally old-school. There are species pages, distribution information, myths and facts, conservation links, and references to other badger sites that once formed a much larger network of independent wildlife pages.

The site’s “About Me” page also preserves a personal history of moving from early web work into university web development, followed by disability and keeping the domain alive as a hobby.

That makes Badger.org useful in two directions.

It is a wildlife reference, and it is a surviving example of what happened to a small dot-com-era web business after the business disappeared but the webmaster did not.

Transit history usually celebrates stations and trains. Chicago-L.org also remembers the little rectangle of cardboard, metal token, or plastic card that got you through the gate.

The fare section documents how passengers paid to ride Chicago’s elevated and rapid-transit system across more than a century of technological and institutional change.

It covers fare levels, policies, media, and the equipment used to collect money.

That sounds administrative until you start looking at the objects.

Every fare system leaves artifacts

Chicago transit riders have used tickets, coins, tokens, magnetic-stripe cards, contactless smart cards, vending machines, turnstiles, and other systems that were ordinary when new and nearly invisible once replaced.

Chicago-L.org preserves those layers.

Its fare history begins in the nineteenth century and follows changes through the era of competing elevated companies, consolidation, the Chicago Rapid Transit Company, and the creation of the CTA.

A separate gallery documents the Automated Fare Collection era from 1994 to 2014, including magnetic farecards and contactless smart cards along with the fare types they represented.

The wider site provides the context those cards need.

Chicago’s “L” was assembled from lines originally built and operated by different private companies. The system was unified operationally, later moved into public ownership, expanded into subways and expressway medians, and repeatedly changed service patterns as the city changed around it.

A fare token therefore belongs to a specific operating system, policy, and period—not just a box of old transit junk.

That makes the archive useful to transportation historians, ephemera collectors, modelers, designers, and anybody trying to identify a strange card found in a drawer.

Ancient Web: Rei’s Random Birdie Info Still Feels Like Advice From an Actual Bird Owner

Rei’s bird page begins with the kind of disclaimer the modern web could use more often: if your bird is sick or injured, take it to an avian vet instead of emailing the website owner.

The page is hosted on MIT web space and documents life with cockatiels and a lovebird. Its navigation includes introductions to cockatiels and lovebirds, feeding mistakes, signs of illness, getting birds to eat vegetables, pellet conversion, potty training, pet photos, and stories about birds misunderstanding normal household objects.

One link is titled “Stupid Bird and Owner Tricks.”

Another explains how a cockatiel failed to understand the concept of a cage door.

This is excellent Internet.

Experience before content strategy

The useful difference is that the advice grew out of specific animals.

Torque, Tcsh, and Cheep-Cheep are named on the page. One section discusses dealing with a possible digestive disorder in a lovebird. Other pages preserve feeding experiments and ordinary behavioral problems that do not fit neatly into a veterinary encyclopedia.

The links section is also a snapshot of early-2000s pet-bird Internet culture: magazines, cockatiel organizations, veterinary lookups, bird rescue pages, feather-plucking information, and references to PDD resources.

Some links are dead now. The page itself remains readable.

That is exactly why personal reference sites age differently from platform content. The author did not need to keep producing weekly bird articles. The useful notes were written, linked together, and left where people could find them.

A searcher trying to identify an old cockatiel behavior can still land on a twenty-year-old page written by somebody who had already dealt with something similar.

There is a point where collecting spoons stops being a hobby and becomes an information architecture problem.

Spoon Planet calls itself a virtual museum, which is fair considering the scale.

The exhibit index contains roughly 500 themed collections and thousands of photographs covering sterling silver souvenir spoons, commemorative pieces, serving utensils, presentation spoons, gemstone pieces, novelty forms, and regional specialties.

The site is sponsored by the Spoon Collectors of Southern California.

Almost anything can end up on a spoon

The index is the fun part because it reveals how broad the collecting field became.

There are spoons for world’s fairs, railroads, hotels, military units, presidents, bridges, mines, national parks, fraternal organizations, ships, universities, weddings, disasters, cities, religious groups, exposition buildings, Native American imagery, political events, and hundreds of other subjects.

Some categories become research archives in their own right.

The site has separate exhibits for battleship spoons, World’s Fair issues, mining motifs, historical buildings, souvenir spoons from specific countries and cities, engraving styles, silver marks, enamel techniques, and unusual forms.

That means an object can be useful to people who do not care about spoons at all.

A collector researching a 1901 Pan-American Exposition piece might find a building image. A naval historian might identify a ship. A genealogist might recognize a fraternal organization. A silver collector might care about the maker’s mark while a local historian cares about the place engraved on the bowl.

This is one reason hand-built collector sites punch above their apparent importance.

They photograph objects that museums may never prioritize and then organize them using the obsessive vocabulary of the hobby itself.

Space electronics are not allowed to fail just because a cosmic ray had a bad attitude.

K Labs is an old technical archive tied to the NASA Office of Logic Design and the engineering problems of digital systems used in space flight. The homepage describes its mission as studying digital-engineering problems for space systems with an eye toward practical solutions.

That wording undersells how much material accumulated there.

The index reaches into programmable logic, FPGAs, ASICs, radiation effects, processor verification, fault tolerance, failure reports, design guides, voltage-margin testing, arithmetic, spaceborne processors, reliability, software IP, heavy-ion testing, and lessons learned.

Failure is part of the documentation

The most valuable engineering archives are not catalogs of things that worked.

They preserve what broke.

K Labs includes failure reports, radiation-test material, design criteria, conference proceedings, device tests, and guidance written for hardware expected to survive conditions far nastier than a desktop computer ever sees.

The site also hosts years of MAPLD conference proceedings covering military and aerospace programmable logic. Its historical material reaches backward into Apollo Guidance Computer topics and early spaceborne processing, while later pages document programmable devices and verification methods used decades afterward.

The visual design is pure technical-web utility: dense link lists, papers, presentations, archives, and references. There is very little effort spent pretending that the reader arrived accidentally.

That makes it valuable in 2026.

Search engines are good at returning broad explanations of “radiation-hardened electronics.” They are less good at recreating a network of old conference proceedings, test documents, engineering memos, and firsthand lessons from people who had to make real hardware survive.

Ancient Web: Industrial Alchemy Built a Technology Museum Out of the Parts Bin

Industrial Alchemy is what happens when the junk drawer wins and gets a museum.

The site went online in 2006 and has now crossed the funny threshold where a website about vintage technology is itself vintage technology. It is still being updated.

Its Technology Museum is organized by component type rather than by famous product. That creates categories normal museums rarely bother with: Geissler tubes, Nixie displays, Dekatrons, Numitrons, magic-eye tubes, magnetrons, klystrons, photomultipliers, CRTs, VFDs, early semiconductor devices, calculators, and assorted instrumentation.

The archive is strongest when the hardware is obscure enough that a model number would otherwise lead nowhere.

Components deserve histories too

A computer museum might preserve a complete machine. Industrial Alchemy preserves the things inside machines and the strange devices between categories.

Recent additions have included an early Western Electric point-contact transistor, unusual LED modules, a Sharp PC-1500 pocket computer, obscure Nixie tubes, and an enormous hybrid countermeasures processor used in the U.S. Army’s Cobra helicopter. That last module contains a forest of bond wires and dozens of semiconductor dies inside a hermetic metal package.

The site provides photographs, descriptions, and datasheets when available.

That sounds simple until you need to identify an unlabeled display module pulled from old equipment.

Component history is difficult because parts were designed to disappear into products. When the product dies, the individual tube or IC often becomes an anonymous object in a bin. A hand-built catalog can preserve the visual cues, packaging, manufacturer, and application long after the original sales literature vanishes.

The site also maintains the personality of the older technical web. Its updates discuss Hamvention flea-market booths, weird acquisitions, and the pleasure of finding obsolete hardware that absolutely nobody needed to save.

Ancient Web: 1812 Privateers Built a Database Out of a War at Sea

The War of 1812 gets much easier to understand when the ships stop being statistics and start acquiring captains, ports, prisoners, declarations, and names.

1812Privateers.org is devoted primarily to American and British privateering during the War of 1812, with related material on prisoners of war and merchant activity.

Privateers occupied an awkward space between commerce and warfare.

Privately owned vessels operated under government authorization, usually through letters of marque, allowing them to attack and capture enemy shipping under wartime rules.

That produced mountains of records.

A war reconstructed from lists

The site collects vessel names, commanders, home ports, engagements, declarations, prisoner information, and references to contemporary sources such as Lloyd’s List and nineteenth-century naval compilations.

One section uses George Foster Emmons’ 1853 naval history to build out a large list of American privateers. Entries connect ship names with captains, ports, actions, and additional information found elsewhere.

Other material helps genealogical researchers work backward from a person’s name.

A sailor might appear in a declaration, a crew list, a prisoner record, or a document tied to the master of a particular vessel. The site explains how to follow those relationships rather than presenting the archive as a simple alphabetical list.

That structure is what makes old specialist websites valuable.

The underlying documents may exist in libraries or scans, but somebody has already spent years figuring out which names connect to which ships and which surviving records answer which questions.

The homepage was still being updated in 2024, including corrections and additions around Francis Scott Key and individual people connected to the conflict.

John Rosa’s site is centered on the AMC Javelin and AMX, but it sprawls into the larger American Motors universe: Rambler, Gremlin, Hornet, Matador, racing programs, dealer material, toys, advertisements, police cars, foreign-market variants, magazine articles, and owner cars.

The result feels less like a polished marque museum than the garage of somebody who kept every clipping.

That is a compliment.

The details normal car histories skip

One section collects old magazine tests and advertisements. Another documents racing Javelins associated with Roger Penske, Mark Donohue, Shirley Shahan, Wally Booth, and other AMC competitors. There are scans of road tests, drivetrain articles, performance-parts coverage, and period advertisements.

The foreign-market pages are even better for researchers. They show right-hand-drive Australian Ramblers and Mexican VAM cars whose specifications diverged from American versions. The site notes details such as Mexican-built Javelins using a 282-cubic-inch six instead of the V8 combinations familiar to U.S. buyers.

Then the archive gets delightfully specific.

There are AMC model cars, dealer promotional models, computer-game appearances, police Javelins, VIN information, old software, restoration photographs, and pages built from reader submissions. A software page still discusses a late-1990s driving simulation that was supposed to feature Trans-Am Javelins, complete with period release-delay updates.

This kind of site is useful because obscure manufacturers generate fragmented history. One fact lives in a magazine. Another lives in a brochure. A third survives because an owner scanned a photograph twenty-five years ago.

Ancient Web: Arizona Roads Maps Highway History One Route at a Time

A highway map looks permanent until you compare it with one from eighty years ago and discover that half the numbers have moved.

Arizona Roads is a comprehensive enthusiast guide to the state’s numbered highways: state routes, U.S. routes, Interstates, urban freeways, historical maps, and assorted numbering oddities.

The site is useful because roads are usually documented for navigation, not memory.

Once a route is bypassed, renumbered, truncated, or absorbed into another highway, the old arrangement can disappear from ordinary maps surprisingly quickly.

Road numbers have biographies

Arizona Roads treats route numbers almost like people with complicated careers.

Individual pages trace endpoints, extensions, former alignments, redesignations, and connections to other highways. Separate sections collect freeway information and mistakes or oddities in road signage.

The historical map scans are especially good.

A 1927 Rand McNally map captures the federal highway system while it was still settling into recognizable form. The site notes, for example, that US 60 had already become US 66 in the planning process while other future Arizona routes were still missing or carried numbers that later disappeared.

A 1935 map catches another transitional moment around Boulder Dam, when Arizona highway numbering changed as the dam and its approaches were completed.

Those details matter because transportation history is often hidden inside administrative decisions that seem trivial at the time.

A changed shield can record the opening of a bridge, construction of a bypass, federal standardization, growth of a city, or the decline of an older road.
