Ancient Web: Alex Churchill Left His Student Homepage Online and Admitted It Was Out of Date

Alex Churchill’s old homepage opens with purple sheep, an elephant on a pogo stick, a reversed e-mail invitation, and an offer to take an armadillo.

Nobody can accuse it of withholding personality.

Churchill later added an unusually useful warning: the website is very out of date, many images are missing, most pages have not been updated for years, and his interests changed.

Then he left it online.

That decision turned an obsolete homepage into a much better historical artifact.

A person, not a profile

The site comes from Churchill’s student years at Cambridge and sprawls across exactly the categories personal homepages once encouraged people to invent for themselves.

There are collections of strange things said by mathematics and computer-science lecturers. There are years of quotes from friends. There are pages about Christianity, the Cambridge Assassins’ Guild, Diplomacy, Magic: The Gathering, the Odd Squad, computer games, silly songs, photographs, and a Diplomacy variant set in Cambridge.

At one point Churchill explains that he built Linux shell scripts to search Magic card rulings.

Elsewhere he lists games he loved, including Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VIII, StarCraft, Civilization, Mario 64, UFO: Enemy Unknown, and Worms.

None of this has been compressed into a professional biography.

That is why it works.

Modern social profiles encourage a continuous present: the old post slides down, the avatar changes, the current self replaces the previous one. A static personal homepage can accidentally preserve an entire obsolete version of a person.

Churchill’s page openly acknowledges that condition rather than fixing it.

Ancient Web: Stunts Fans Kept a 1990 DOS Racing Game Alive

The front page of the Kalpen Stunts site does not waste time explaining itself. It shouts that you have made a great decision and invites you into the world of 4D Sports Driving — Stunts.

That tone is appropriate for a game whose community survived largely because the game gave players enough tools to make their own trouble.

Stunts was released in 1990 by Distinctive Software and sold in some markets as 4D Sports Driving. Its polygonal 3D racing is primitive by modern standards, but the game included the feature that gave it a much longer life: a track editor.

Players could build courses containing roads, banks, jumps, bridges, tunnels, corkscrews, and loops, then drive them, trade them, race times, and save replays.

A DOS game became a hobby platform

The Kalpen site is one of the old community nodes that collected versions of the game, downloads, utilities, tracks, and information needed to keep Stunts usable after its commercial era ended.

That matters because old games usually survive in two very different ways.

One is preservation: disk images, screenshots, manuals, and historical notes.

The other is continued practice: people are still making things with the game.

Stunts developed the second kind of afterlife. Communities organized competitions, exchanged tracks, analyzed driving techniques, and pushed the track editor far beyond what a 1990 purchaser would have expected.

The surviving website still wears its old fan-page energy openly. There is no attempt to make the subject respectable by sanding off the enthusiasm.

That is part of the artifact.

The web was very good at giving aging software a second social life because a game’s official support could end while its users simply kept publishing files and instructions.

Ancient Web: Foraging Pictures Indexed 1,581 Photos From New York Wild-Food Walks

ForagingPictures.com is what happens when somebody goes on wild-food walks with a camera for years and then refuses to let the photographs sit in an unlabeled folder.

The site currently indexes 1,581 pictures covering 237 plants and mushrooms. The images came from 30 wild-edible foraging tours in the New York City area led by “Wildman” Steve Brill.

The tour list stretches from 1999 into the 2020s and includes Central Park, Prospect Park, Forest Park, Alley Pond Park, Inwood Park, Cunningham Park, Marine Park, and other locations.

Then the site reorganizes the same observations by plant.

A field notebook turned into relational data

The homepage divides specimens into edible, medicinal, inedible, poisonous, edible mushrooms, and inedible mushrooms.

The edible section alone lists more than a hundred plants, often with scientific names. The poisonous category sits on the same page rather than being politely hidden elsewhere, which is important when the subject is putting unidentified vegetation into your mouth.

The site also generates tables showing where plants were found and how many appeared on each tour.

That makes it more useful than a photo gallery.

A visitor can approach the archive by season, location, trip, species, or broad use category. The structure preserves context around each photograph: not merely what does this plant look like? but where and when did somebody encounter it?

The result resembles a long-running citizen field notebook.

It also shows a nice old-web trait: the archive keeps accumulating without throwing away its earlier organizational logic. A 1999 outing and a 2024 outing can live in the same plain index.

Ancient Web: RCDB Has Been Measuring Roller Coasters Since 1996

Somebody had to decide that roller coasters deserved a real database instead of a fan page. Duane Marden did.

RCDB has been online since the 1990s and still approaches amusement rides like structured data. A coaster is not merely a picture and a paragraph. It has a park, location, operating status, manufacturer, model, height, drop, speed, length, inversions, layout, opening history, and relationships to other records.

The site’s own statistics page currently reports 13,428 roller coasters, 6,622 amusement parks, 134,204 pictures, and 14,705 videos.

That is a long way from a hobby homepage.

The obsession became infrastructure

Independent coaster references date RCDB to 1996 and credit programmer Duane Marden as its founder. The site’s current about page still credits Marden for programming and lists a large network of researchers, photographers, translators, and other contributors.

Its usefulness comes from restraint.

RCDB separates records from rumor. The database is designed around identifiable rides and parks, with reports for new attractions, records, coaster counts, inversions, and geographic views. Search can be done across coasters, amusement parks, companies, and people.

The result is a reference site that enthusiasts, journalists, researchers, and ordinary people trying to identify some half-remembered ride can all use differently.

It also demonstrates one of the web’s oldest successful patterns: begin with a narrow subject, impose a stable schema on it, and keep adding records until the collection becomes difficult to replace.

The modern interface is cleaner than the web of 1996, but the underlying idea has barely changed.

This is what the old web looked like when a personal obsession matured into public infrastructure.

Ancient Web: A 1994 Princeton Page Asked What SimCity Was Teaching Its Players

In 1994, Paul Starr watched his children play SimCity and started worrying about who had decided what happened when they raised taxes.

That question became a long essay about simulation, public policy, education, and black boxes.

The Princeton-hosted page preserves Starr’s article from The American Prospect, Spring 1994.

It arrives at an unusually good moment in computer history.

SimCity had already sold millions of copies. SimEarth, SimLife, SimFarm, A-Train, and SimHealth were pushing simulation into homes. Multimedia PCs were becoming powerful enough to make complicated models feel like entertainment rather than spreadsheets.

Starr was fascinated by that—and suspicious of it.

What assumptions are hiding in the toy?

The essay traces simulation from military and planning exercises through academic modeling and into commercial games.

Starr interviews Will Wright and notes that SimCity’s model deliberately exaggerates effects because feedback has to be visible enough to make the game playable. Wright describes the game as a caricature rather than a prediction system.

That distinction becomes the essay’s central concern.

A simulation can teach players to think about systems, tradeoffs, feedback loops, budgets, land use, traffic, utilities, and unintended consequences. But the model also makes assumptions about how those systems work.

If the assumptions are hidden, the player can start confusing “the way the game works” with the way reality works.

Starr connects that problem to government policy models, where forecasts can carry enormous authority even when most participants cannot inspect the machinery underneath them.

Thirty-plus years later, this reads less like an old game review than an early warning about algorithmic authority.

Ancient Web: TuxKart Is the Linux Racer That Became SuperTuxKart

The original TuxKart website is still online, and it looks exactly like the sort of page that could have convinced a Linux user in 2000 to compile a kart racer for no sensible reason.

Steve and Oliver Baker’s page introduces a game starring Tux, the Linux penguin, with six racetracks and the wonderfully modest assessment that it “plays pretty reasonably.”

That tiny project has a much longer shadow than the page suggests.

Before SuperTuxKart

The modern SuperTuxKart project’s own history traces the original TuxKart to April 2000. Steve Baker created the game for his son Oliver, who helped design tracks, and the project used PLIB, a graphics library Steve had also created.

Development eventually entered maintenance mode, with the final original TuxKart release arriving in March 2004.

Then things got messy in the traditional open-source way.

A Linux Game Tome “Game of the Month” effort tried to improve TuxKart in 2004. The later SuperTuxKart history describes that effort as going badly enough that the project became unstable and effectively died. A fork named SuperTuxKart emerged from the wreckage, was later revived, and ultimately became the actively developed cross-platform kart racer known today.

The descendant still carries fossils from the original.

The SuperTuxKart team points to ideas and track lineage that reach back to TuxKart, including Oliver’s Math Class, rescue behavior, penalty concepts, and the zipper speed boost.

That makes the old SourceForge page more than a download page for an obsolete game.

It is the visible root of a software family.

The page also preserves a specific era of Linux gaming when a developer could put up screenshots, thank Larry Ewing for Tux, link to source and downloads, admit to a couple of bugs, and call the project usable.

Ancient Web: Abduct.com Built a Giant Archive Around Alien-Abduction Culture

Abduct.com does not ease the visitor into the subject.

The navigation starts throwing alien contact, scars, implants, symbols, cattle mutilations, crop circles, Roswell, UFO photographs, support groups, and abduction terminology at the screen almost immediately.

The site calls itself Alien Abduction Experience and Research and describes itself as a large, long-running research website devoted to alien-abduction and UFO experiences.

Whatever one thinks of the claims, the archive is valuable as a record of an Internet subculture organizing itself.

The web gave experiencers a filing cabinet

The site combines several categories that would normally live in different institutions.

There are personal encounter reports, researcher essays, photographs and drawings, an alien-symbol index, book reviews, discussion material, survey material, question-and-answer pages, terminology, homework resources, support groups, and pages devoted to specific recurring claims such as implants and physical marks.

That mixture matters more than whether a visitor accepts the underlying interpretations.

Abduction culture existed before the web, but websites changed its shape. Someone with an unusual experience no longer had to find a local UFO group, mail a researcher, or wait for a niche magazine. They could discover a vocabulary, compare accounts, fill out surveys, browse images, and contact people who already believed the experience fit a known pattern.

The result is a feedback loop preserved in HTML.

A personal report becomes part of an archive. The archive supplies categories. New visitors use those categories to describe later reports.

That process is worth studying whether the subject is folklore, psychology, belief formation, media history, or extraterrestrials.

Ancient Web: Sheep 101 Built a Plain-English Sheep School on the Open Web

Sheep 101 has a beautifully uncomplicated mission: explain sheep to people who need to know about sheep.

The intended audience includes 4-H and FFA members, students, teachers, beginning shepherds, and the general public. The site says it uses simple language and pictures, and that description is accurate. It behaves more like a patient extension handout that kept growing than a modern agriculture portal.

The author is Susan Schoenian, identified on the site as a sheep and goat specialist with University of Maryland Extension and a sheep producer herself.

That combination matters.

The table of contents keeps expanding

The navigation reaches far beyond “what is a sheep?”

There are pages on breeds, colored sheep, hair sheep, lambing, tails, behavior, butting, horns, cud chewing, grazing, meat, dairy sheep, wool, shearing, predators, guardian dogs, diseases, sheep as pets, herding dogs, and farming.

A history section wanders into famous sheep, the arrival of sheep in America, odd facts, and even why sheep appear so frequently in the Bible.

The site also points readers toward Sheep 201, described as a beginner’s guide to raising sheep.

That separation between 101 and 201 is good information architecture because the site serves two very different visitors: someone wondering why sheep chew cud and someone trying to manage an actual flock.

The homepage notes that related Maryland small-ruminant material dates to 1998. Sheep 101 itself carries the visual habits of the educational web that grew around land-grant universities, extension offices, hobbyists, and subject specialists: lots of narrowly named pages, almost no ceremony, and an assumption that the reader came to learn something specific.

It is also unusually permissive about educational reuse. The site says its pages may be copied, downloaded, and printed for educational purposes when unaltered and credited, while photographs retain their owners’ rights.

Ancient Web: Fourmilab Rebuilt a 1977 Nuclear-Weapons Manual Into a Web Index

A 644-page U.S. government manual about what nuclear weapons do is not exactly light reading.

Fourmilab made it easier to navigate anyway.

The source is the 1977 third edition of The Effects of Nuclear Weapons, compiled and edited by Samuel Glasstone and Philip J. Dolan and published by the U.S. Department of Defense and the Energy Research and Development Administration.

Its chapter list is grimly comprehensive.

General principles. Air and surface bursts. Air blast. Structural loading and damage. Ground shock. Thermal radiation. Initial radiation. Fallout. Radio and radar effects. Electromagnetic pulse. Biological effects.

The preservation work is visible

Fourmilab explains exactly what happened to this edition online.

A Princeton program had scanned the public-domain government publication into bitmap PDF files. That version later became difficult or impossible for the Fourmilab editor to locate. The surviving chapter files also repeated the title material at the beginning of each PDF.

So the files were edited.

Duplicate front matter was removed from individual chapters. The title page, preface, acknowledgements, glossary, SI-unit guide, and index were broken out separately. A new XHTML table of contents was built to make the material usable again.

That is small-scale digital preservation in its purest form: not merely copying files, but repairing the interface around them.

The page even documents a failed attempt to deep-link directly to PDF page numbers because browser/PDF behavior did not work reliably enough.

Alongside the book is an online version of the Nuclear Bomb Effects Computer that accompanied an earlier edition.

Ancient Web: NASA’s StarChild Still Looks Like the Web Taught Astronomy in 1996

NASA’s StarChild is what happens when a major scientific institution builds a children’s astronomy site in 1996 and then leaves enough of the original idea visible for decades.

The site is aimed at young astronomers roughly ages 5 through 13. Its central design decision is simple: Level 1 and Level 2 versions of material about the solar system, the universe, “space stuff,” and a glossary.

That sounds obvious now. On the early web it was a serious attempt to make institutional science material readable by children without flattening everything into one audience.

Built by an outreach team, not a content machine

StarChild identifies itself as a service of NASA Goddard’s High Energy Astrophysics Science Archive Research Center. The site’s project-leader page says Dr. Laura A. Whitlock created StarChild and its older-sibling site, Imagine the Universe!, in 1996 while serving as Education and Outreach Director for Goddard’s Laboratory for High Energy Astrophysics.

The pages include classroom material, printable activities, games, glossaries, graphics, and astronomy explanations at different reading levels. Some activities still include notes for browsers without JavaScript and can simply be printed and completed on paper.

That is a time capsule in itself.

StarChild also accumulated recognition during the early educational-web era. Its project page records a 1998 Webby Award for Best Education Web Site, and an events page lists later educational and family-safety awards.

More interesting than the awards is the survival of the structure.

The site still exposes a hierarchy that assumes a child might enter at the front page, click around by subject, read several pages, try an activity, and follow links deeper into NASA material. There is no feed to refresh and no recommendation engine deciding what comes next.

It is a small curriculum disguised as a website.
