Ancient Web: The GIA Preserved SquareSoft News From the PlayStation Boom

The Gaming Intelligence Agency covered Japanese games during the years when SquareSoft seemed capable of turning every RPG announcement into an event. Its old SquareSoft subdomain survives as a piece of that reporting environment rather than a cleaned-up retrospective written years later.

The GIA operated around the turn of the millennium and became known for dense coverage of role-playing games, imports, previews, rumors, and Japanese industry news. The SquareSoft section is especially useful because it catches the company during the PlayStation boom: Final Fantasy, experimental side projects, new labels, staff announcements, and the steady churn of information surrounding games before release.

One surviving text item dates back to 1996 and reports Square launching the AQUES brand name. Other GIA material from the late 1990s and early 2000s circulated apparent design information and rumors surrounding games such as Final Fantasy IX. Contemporary RPG sites also cited GIA reporting on staff and production details for Final Fantasy X.

This material is valuable precisely because it is not hindsight. Modern game histories know which rumors became true, which games shipped, and which projects mattered. Contemporary pages did not. They preserve uncertainty: leaks that might be real, announcements with incomplete details, tentative release information, and the way fans understood a company before the outcome was obvious.

That makes old game-news sites unusually useful research sources. They capture not only what happened but what people knew at a particular moment. A polished database can tell you that a game was announced. A surviving 1999 news item can tell you what the announcement actually looked like before fifteen years of wiki cleanup removed the confusion.

The GIA itself closed in the early 2000s, but its pages continued to be cited and discussed by later writers and former readers. Pieces of its reporting survive under old hostnames like this one, which is exactly why ancient URLs are sometimes worth more than a modern summary.

Ancient Web: Final Fantasy Dimension Still Looks Like a Fan Site From 1999

Final Fantasy Dimension does not merely contain old Final Fantasy material. It still presents itself like a fan site built when a 1024×768 monitor was something worth designing around and a six-digit visitor counter was a landmark worth announcing.

The site centers heavily on Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy VIII, with later additions for Advent Children and Dirge of Cerberus. Its front page is packed with graphics, character art, links, disclaimers, and the unmistakable visual density of a late-1990s game shrine. It proudly notes that more than 100,000 visitors reached the site and explicitly says it is optimized for a 1024×768 screen.

One tiny line is especially useful for dating the artifact: the visitor counter was restarted on February 11, 1999. The domain itself came later, but the page carries its earlier history with it.

This was the era when a game fan did not merely post reactions. They built a place. Fan art had named creators. Image galleries carried stern warnings against stealing modified graphics. The webmaster identified himself as DFAT and carefully explained that the project had no affiliation with Square or Square Enix. The copyright disclaimer is almost a genre unto itself: a defensive wall of text built by somebody who clearly knew the site was using a lot of commercial game imagery and wanted everyone to understand that the love was unofficial.

That is part of why the site matters in 2026. Modern fandom tends to flow through a few enormous platforms. Final Fantasy Dimension reflects a different structure: one webmaster, one domain, one visual language, and enough enthusiasm to keep adding sections whenever Square released something worth obsessing over.

It is also useful as a research artifact because it preserves the texture of game fandom rather than only the facts. A wiki can tell you when Final Fantasy VII was released. It cannot reproduce what it felt like when somebody arranged an entire personal corner of the Web around Aeris artwork, Squall images, guestbook traffic, and a browser window expected to be exactly the right size.

Ancient Web: Machine Learning in Games Kept the Old AI Reading List Alive

Long before every software company discovered the phrase “artificial intelligence,” Jay Scott was maintaining a website about something much narrower and more useful: how computers learn to play games better.

The site is aimed at AI researchers and game programmers. It organizes material around heuristic search, neural networks, genetic algorithms, temporal-difference methods and other techniques, then connects those methods to actual game-playing systems.

The subject list is a time capsule by itself. There are neural-network backgammon programs, strong learning Othello programs, pursuit-evasion research, robotic soccer, NeuroChess, Go networks, Metagame and general game playing. Later additions include StarCraft competitions and the BotPrize Turing-test experiments in Unreal Tournament.

More important than the individual examples is the way the site worked as research infrastructure. Scott maintained indexes of games and people, tutorials, links to AI resources, lists of online papers, software, workshops, competitions and a bibliography. Other academic pages from the period cite it as a place to find researchers and work in strategic game learning.

Scott’s current homepage now describes Machine Learning in Games as long out of date but still of historical interest. That is a wonderfully accurate description of why it matters in 2026. The machine-learning field moved on at terrifying speed, but an old hand-curated map of what researchers thought was important at the time tells you something a freshly generated search result cannot.

The page also captures a different AI culture. The problems are concrete. Can the program learn Othello? Can it improve at backgammon? Can evolutionary methods produce better strategies? There is little mystical language and not much pretending the machine has become a coworker with feelings. Mostly there are algorithms, papers and games.

For researchers, that means the dead or aging links are part of the evidence. For webmasters, it is a reminder of what a genuinely useful link directory looked like: a knowledgeable person imposing structure on a technical field because they had actually read the material.

Ancient Web: TuxKart Is the Linux Racer That Became SuperTuxKart

The original TuxKart website is still online, and it looks exactly like the sort of page that could have convinced a Linux user in 2000 to compile a kart racer for no sensible reason.

Steve and Oliver Baker’s page introduces a game starring Tux, the Linux penguin, with six racetracks and the wonderfully modest assessment that it “plays pretty reasonably.”

That tiny project has a much longer shadow than the page suggests.

Before SuperTuxKart

The modern SuperTuxKart project’s own history traces the original TuxKart to April 2000. Steve Baker created the game for his son Oliver, who helped design tracks, and the project used PLIB, a graphics library Steve had also created.

Development eventually entered maintenance mode, with the final original TuxKart release arriving in March 2004.

Then things got messy in the traditional open-source way.

A Linux Game Tome “Game of the Month” effort tried to improve TuxKart in 2004. The later SuperTuxKart history describes that effort as going badly enough that the project became unstable and effectively died. A fork named SuperTuxKart emerged from the wreckage, was later revived, and ultimately became the actively developed cross-platform kart racer known today.

The descendant still carries fossils from the original.

The SuperTuxKart team points to ideas and track lineage that reach back to TuxKart, including Oliver’s Math Class, rescue behavior, penalty concepts, and the zipper speed boost.

That makes the old SourceForge page more than a download page for an obsolete game.

It is the visible root of a software family.

The page also preserves a specific era of Linux gaming when a developer could put up screenshots, thank Larry Ewing for Tux, link to source and downloads, admit to a couple of bugs, and call the project usable.
